To avoid Constance McMillen bringing a female date to her prom, the teen was sent to a “fake prom” while the rest of her class partied at a secret location at an event organized by parents.

Separate but equal. On the other hand,
The judge declined to force the school district to hold the prom because a parent-sponsored, private prom was being organized — and the understanding was that McMillen and her date were invited to that event.
I imagine that judge might be a little pissed off.

As far the kids with learning difficulties thing goes, I suspect that they were more of an unintentional omission rather than an intentional one. Not that I’m excusing the school, students or parents for anything (in fact I have a very strong desire to punch them all in the face right now) but how I see this going down is:
School/students/parents plan extra prom that will exclude Constance. Constance finds out about it, meanwhile the school’s lawyers mention that the school probably won’t be forced to hold the prom if a private one is going to include Constance. School announces publicly that the “official” unofficial prom will be held wherever Constance and the 6 others ended up. Meanwhile it is left to students/parents to spread the word about the real prom’s location (probably where the original extra prom would be). The learning disabled kids were left out. The school was trying to screw over Constance and her girlfriend, and managed to do it to those two kids by accident (and the douchiness of the students/parents)
Still inexcusable, but it probably wasn’t intentional.

asiangrrlMN (#49): Yay! That is so nice.
As to the intentionality of not including the disabled kids in the actual prom: as a kid who was bullied and made fun of because of a stutter, I know in my gut that they “normal” kids liked the idea that the disabled kids were excluded and that Constance was sent to their prom. (Just a tad cynical…)
57.
MattR
I am guessing the reason people were able to pull this off without anyone complaining is that it was known in the community thta there was gonna be more than one prom. From a USA Today article last week: Jay Nichols, a junior at the school, said the dance at the country club will be one of several private proms scattered around Fulton Friday night. I would bet that many in the community were (mis)led about the fact that 95% of the students would be attending the one without Constance (and that Constance would not be informed of that prom’s existence). In fact, without knowing further details, many of the students may have been redirected from one prom to the other without realizing why. (How hard would it be the day of the prom for a handful of “cool” kids to call around and say that everyone is going to the same place?) Or the students could all be bigoted assholes, but I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Even wingers found it hard to carp this time. “Yeah, he made it over the plate, but…BARELY!”
Nah, we’ll be hearing about how baseball is an ELITIST sport attended by latte-sipping, arugula-eating pansies who hate ‘murika, and that’s why everyone cheered.

As to the intentionality of not including the disabled kids in the actual prom: as a kid who was bullied and made fun of because of a stutter, I know in my gut that they “normal” kids liked the idea that the disabled kids were excluded and that Constance was sent to their prom. (Just a tad cynical…)

Yeah, that’s what everybody’s offended with, the fucking salty language.

Jason Heyward smashed a three run homer in his first big league at-bat. I’m thinking it’s gonna be a fun year to be a Braves fan.

The Nats lost 11-1. I think it’s gonna be a typical fugly year for Washington fans.
And when does Cole start the Championship Game thread, aka, the Channel Extreme Hatred of Duke Thread? I’ve been thinking nothing but vile thoughts while pouring ox blood in the form of a pentagram all day long–I’ve got a shitload of bad karma to point in Duke’s specific direction.
Cat Lady
It’s Mississippi. That’s who they are, but Constance is in the vanguard, and Constance is going to show some of them the way out of their dead end. It only takes one to point the way to those who are looking for directions. Go Constance! I’m a Constance, and she’s representin’ fine. Also too.
ETA: I want a reply button. It’s wrong not to have a reply button. I need to be able to reply. Who will think of the children!

And I brought the Pixie Dust to sprinkle on Butler. Hopefully, that will be enough. Play Ball!

I must be a bad BJer; I don’t mind Duke winning a close game.

Hopefully our combination will be enough to help against the mighty Three Wizards in the game, aka the Refs, should the game be close and they incline toward Duke the way Mighty Wizards in the NCAA universe are apt to be.
My cubicle neighbor is a Butler alum. Both her parents entered the hospital seperately over the last two weeks. She needs a good pickmeup. This would be one.

Ditto for Cleveland fan. Their #1 starter, Westbrook, hasn’t pitched in 2 years. Today he gave up 5 runs, threw 4 wild pitches, hit two and walked 4.
Ugh.

Of course if you’re a Dookie simply dicking with us, I’ll instruct my legion of flying monkees to swarm on your condo an fling poo at you. Which is too bad because they’re currently enroute to Durham to do the same thing. Good flying, poo-flinging monkees are hard to find.

Can we please call hummingbirds hummingbirds and NOT hummers?
For those of us who live in cities, birds are not the first association we make to the word hummer, and the initial mental-image is rather perplexing.
