I never understood how Carly Fiorina was regarded as a successful businesswoman. She cut her teeth in a monopoly (AT&T), and then the minute she stepped outside that environment she ran the company into the fucking ground.
She had no track record of success before she started becoming a high profile FAILURE in everything she did. Why would anyone think this go-round would be any different? And lo, it has not been.

Since this is sort of computer-related thread, i.e. Carly sucked as the CEO for HP…
I have a question.
I want an iPad. I know, who doesn’t. Thing is.. I have a little cash to buy it, but I can’t decide if I need to spend the money for 3g or if wi-fi will work fine. Mostly will use it at home, movies, books, Balloon-Juice, etc. where I have wireless.
I also have an iPhone 3Gs, so I’m thinking that might work in instances where I need 3G supported stuff.
Are people buying the wi-fi or waiting for the 3G?
This post demands a NSFHV (not safe for human viewing) disclaimer (shamelessly stolen from Sadly, No! post about the /b/tards invading the Hutaree message boards).
Comedy quotient aside, this is an Undercover FBI Agent DougJ joint.

For those who are afraid to click, (a) good call and (b) the description of the video includes this priceless bit of prose:
In the film, Sickles’s chubby, tattooed character finds himself attacked by an enormous creature which appears to be half man, half duck. “Scar my tattered body no more with your punishing dildo mallet,” Sickles exclaims at one particularly dramatic moment.

@Max: Im regularly in a place without wi-fi. And I commute via mass transit. So 3G has its uses for me.

@Max: I’m tempted by Apple’s New Shiny, but I think I’ll at a minimum wait for the 3G model to become available. That’ll give me the opportunity to actually play with the thing (I figure that within a few weeks, the crowds in the Apple store will abate to the point of reasonableness), and also to see the first wave of iPad-specific apps.

@dmsilev: I know I should wait a few weeks, but I have a little extra dough ray me burning a hole in my pocket for something with an Apple logo on it.
Well, if you plan to be using it in areas where there’s no wi-fi a lot, then it’s probably worth it. Also, it’s a la carte pricing on the 3G service. You can buy a month’s worth at a time with no long-term contract, which is a good thing.
If I had the extra money, I’d go with the 3G. I have an iPod Touch – the smaller version of the iPad :) – and there are times (like in airports and driving) where I wish I had 3G.
If iPhone was on Verizon (curse you Steve Jobs!), I’d have one of those instead.
BTW, you should read David Pogue’s review of the iPad on NYT today.

@Max: I know the feeling. I’ve sent Apple more of my money than I care to think about, but I generally get good value for that money so I don’t regret it.
The first-generation MacBookPro that I got through work was an exception, though. Went through two motherboards and a couple of other random failed parts before giving up and replacing it.
I’ll probably go for the iPad 3G once it’s out. The Papers app is nice on the iPod, but it’ll be freaking awesome on an iPad. Not to mention timewasters like Plants vs. Zombies.
@dmsilev: @Max:
Just to note that I just ordered a new MBPro since mine is finally giving up the ghost. I thought about the iPad, but I need the camera, ability to multi-task and view Flash content.

You know, that’s weird, because mine is a first gen MBP, and it’s held up really well for 4(?) years. Now the fans have given out, the battery’s dead, and the processor feels like a turtle (I’ve given up on trying to run VMWare).
It seems that, like all equipment, there are some lemons along the way.

@arguingwithsignposts: Yeah, I figured it was just a lemon. Most of the other Macs I’ve owned or worked with have kept going for years and years without issue. Its replacement, the last model before the unibody case redesign (so ~2-3 years old), hasn’t given me a moment of trouble.
I thought about it, and I couldn’t imagine any frequently recurring scenario where I would need to download or upload, or send or receive email, in WiFi-free places, so I pre-ordered a WiFi-only model. If I turn out to be wrong, my kid will get an unexpected gift.

Well, that was fast. Papers is out with version 1.5, which includes iPad support. Looking at the screenshots on iTunes, I’m already starting to drool at the thought of a nicely portable, easily readable, version of my entire professional library. Want.
Edit: The app in question. Highly recommended for academics or anyone who needs to keep track of piles of PDF files.
That movie was a little slice of awesome! Irrefutable proof linking militias and the teabaggers. My only regret is that the feds rounded up Pale Horse before he could slip away to Europe, Roman Polanski-style. Why does Obama hate Art??!?
You really like Papers? I’m testing it out and I don’t like it that much so far.

@Undercover FBI Agent DougJ: The Mac version is must-have software for me. It’s made my life oh so much easier. Keeps track of hundreds upon hundreds of PDF files, many of which I’ll read Real Soon Now, really I will.
The iPod version is limited by the small screen; the functionality is there, but you can’t really read much on a 3″ screen. I find it useful for meetings in coffeeshops, the department lounge, or whatever; to be able to refer to a graph in some random paper without toting along a laptop or a filing cabinet full of printouts is nice. On an iPad-sized display, you’d be able to peruse the text as well without zooming in 400%.
Jesus, that wasn’t a review, that was a blowjob. Jobs has done a fantastic job with the revisionism though, everyone seems to have forgotten about the Apple III, the Lisa, the original, underpowered Mac, Jobs ouster from Apple in 1985 because he had fucked up the company and the failure of NeXT.

@Undercover FBI Agent DougJ: Dunno. Nothing mentioned on the capsule description of the app. Without an iPad to try things on, that’s the sort of question you’d have to post on the support forums to get answered.

3G apparently won’t be available until next month. If they’re ordering now, they’re ordering wi-fi. And they apparently sold out of the pre-orders.
