Take it away, Bad Horse’s Filly:
What a week. I had a great time today talking with college students about resource efficiency and sustainability (or the dreaded, “going green” a nonsense term IMHO). It went really well and I think we connected on a couple changes they could make that would make a true difference. First and foremost, get rid of bottled water. And I was happy to see many hold up their reusable bottles when I mentioned it. All of this having nothing to do with food, so, without further delay, here is tonight’s menu.

On the board tonight:

Cranberry Chicken
Cheesy-Lemon Cauliflower
Ice Cream Sundaes

I confess, I stuck to disposable bottles for a long time because I could never find one I liked. The plastic reusable ones ended up with a weird taste from the soap that never seemed to go away and the stainless steel ones had that really annoying screw-on, screw-off top that I knew would drive me nuts within the first hour.
Then I spotted this Roho bottle at Target and it was love at first sight. Not only is it stainless steel so it doesn’t hold onto that soap taste, it has a flip top!
I got the “Tweet” pattern but they have a bunch of others as well.

Rep Cantor really is a danger to himself, he’s just stupid.
Speaker Pelosi is 70 tomorrow, odds on her getting a bit of extra celebration tomorrow when the Prez signs the fixit bill?

Has this been a great week or what??

@And Another Thing…: Cantor is a danger to me. But I’m not bitter that he’s my representative. Honest.

Mark Potok, the director of publications and information for the Southern Poverty Law Center, was on Fresh Air with Terry Gross tonight talking about hate groups. Potok just released a report called “Rage on the Right – The Year in Hate and Extremism” The SPLC certainly have their work cut out for them.

@Violet: and @Linda Featheringill: Thank you both. I didn’t have to work today, so that was nice. Interesting talk with the company owner Wednesday. He’s having some serious concerns about keeping this person with the company. So the drama will continue for a few more days, anyway.

@And Another Thing…: Holy crap, 70?
I feel like I would need to be on cocaine just to keep up with her, and I’m only 45.
And that John Dingle, up all night with the votin’ and the whatnot! I FELL ASLEEP WHILE TRYING TO LISTEN TO HIS POST-VOTE COMMENTS ON SUNDAY! He’s making with the comments, at 84 (I think), and I’m unable to keep my eyes open. What do they serve in the House cafeteria?
ellaesther
@gbear: I heard that too! I said it on an earlier thread, so forgive me for repeating myself, but man alive, that was chilling information — and I kinda knew it already!
I wish they would just keep the POTUS in an undisclosed location and let him govern over the country’s PA system or something….

Anyone here who enjoyed Where the Wild Things Are, you’ll want to take a look at Spike Jonze’s new short film, “I’m Here”.
It’s a very touching little piece, if not a mite asymmetrical, but if you liked WTWTA, you should enjoy it.

I feel bad for Bart Stupak’s family, because of the way Tebaggin’ Taliban is terrorizing them. But…
How did Stupak not see this coming? How did we not see this coming. He hijakced the HCR debate with a lie about abortion funding and caught the attention of every anti-choice theocon who was hoping for the Dems to be their own worst enemy. So he jumps on the back of the anti-choice tiger, and when it comes time to dismount (Obama’s executive order for Stupak’s yes vote) he gets bit.
It seems kind of like “be careful what you wish for, ’cause you just might get it.” Stupak was a reliable back bencher who grabbed the spotlight. Great! Now the crazies know who he is.
So what’s the lesson here? Hindsight is 20/20? It’s called grandstanding because everybody sees you?
FWIW…

Can someone point me to the place in the health care bill where it says that government employees have to be on the exchanges.

It’s a little scary how fast he’s gone gray. I think it took W about 6 years to get to that point.
Of course, Obama’s accomplished in one year about as much as W did in 6, so I guess it works out.

@Gus: Yep, but that lazy cat didn’t catch it. We feed him too well. I guess.

@And Another Thing…: Meanwhile, one of the random Google ads at the left (not currently visible, but there a couple of clicks ago) wants to mark Pelosi’s birthday by giving her “the gift of early retirement.”
Oh, yes: This is called the “Birthday Bomb Bash.” With “bomb” used in exactly the same light vein as the ads showing her on fire, and the gunsights on Palin’s website, of course…

@Midnight Marauder:
Well, it certainly proves Eric Cantor is a big fucking liar, but we knew that.

So the building of the company he contracts for direct mail got in the way of a falling bullet = the congressputz being “directly threatened.”
I guess we can add Gravity to the long list of things that have a well-known liberal bias.

@Mnemosyne: To go gray from the responsibility of being president you have to actually consider it your responsibility and give a damn. Every other president in my lifetime, you could watch them aging. Bush didn’t start aging until his poll numbers seriously declined. Really. No gray after 9/11, no gray after the Iraq War started to go south, or Abu Ghraib, or Katrina, not until his second term when his poll numbers plummeted.
Gives you a good idea of what he actually cared about.

@Belafon (formerly anonevent): I’ve just started going through stuff today (trying to get ahead of the legal curve). I haven’t seen the requirement for government employees, but the Exchanges are dealt with starting with Section 1311 (if you have the pdf version that’s page 55).
Redshift
@Mister Papercut: It really does show what a complete Rovian tool Cantor is. Try to blunt your opponents’ completely accurate complaint by claiming their secret motivation is what you are openly doing yourself.
This wasn’t clear from the police report, since he could well not have known that it was a random shot beforehand. But Cantor described it just as “his campaign office,” and there is no way he was unaware that the building had no visible connection to him. This was done deliberately to throw the media off the scent, and it worked (for now), because most people aren’t as evil as modern conservatives.

After rereading the Senate bill recently and watching the predictions of impending doom coming from the left’s repeal-and-replacers, I wonder how many people actually understand that this bill has made the Secretary of Health and Human Services one of the most powerful economic forces in the country. The exchange basically gives SecHealth sweeping, purposefully vague regulatory powers that don’t require any litigation or new legislation to aggressively enforce.
Many people also don’t seem to realize that state exchange administrators basically have the power to respond to abusive private insurers by kicking them out of the exchange and funneling everyone on the individual market into either co-ops or the non-profit OPM plans.
Despite all the angst about not having a national exchange, delegating all this authority to state administrators may very well mean we see several more progressive states like California go totally non-profit in their individual market. On top of that, SecHealth has complete authority to commandeer any exchange that allows insurers to price gouge or ignore regulations.
I don’t know how you could read these sections of the law and come away with the kos-favorite canard that the bill was written by the insurance industry. The law we passed is not the Senate Finance Committee bill. The level of control HHS has over the individual insurance market is unlike anything we’ve seen before in this country.

@Stroszek:
My kick right now is reminding people that making people buy insurance from private companies is not inherently problematic. Several healthcare systems — including Japan, Germany and Switzerland — all force their citizens to buy insurance from private companies. The difference is that they’re non-profit companies that are very tightly regulated by the government.
The biggest problem with our system is that the whole damn thing is set up for profit. It’s not just insurance companies that expect to make a profit off sick people. It’s also hospitals and doctors and pharmaceutical companies. We really need to be transitioning away from a world where drug companies advertise their product and surgeons advertise which surgeries they’ll perform. It’s just so surreal to me that we run ads on TV and radio telling people to have specific surgical procedures or buy specific drugs.
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@Anya:
It is still the most endearing Obama event to me when he was in Egypt at one of the pyramids, or something, with the stone carving of a person with big ears, and Obama’s reaction “his ears look like mine:. As far as personally, that cemented my suspicion this was just a good dude to the core. His policies as president stand separate as good or bad and worthy of criticism, but my personal like for the guy was complete with that happening.
FlipYrWhig
@General Egali Tarian Stuck: Greenwald is in love with himself, and he won’t stand for his beloved being insulted, so that’s why he gets twice as outraged.
FlipYrWhig
@Mnemosyne: Right — the concept of _insurance_ really isn’t inherently offensive. It’s a pretty clever idea that does salutary things like pool risk and establish mutual obligation and cushion against calamities — which is why a lot of them (used to) have “mutual” in their names. People like credit unions and hate banks; there’s no reason there couldn’t be anti-corporate insurance companies rather than these unwieldy behemoths we’re used to dealing with. Running the whole concern to squeeze the members (ahem) is the offensive part.
Stroszek
@Mnemosyne: Ultimately, it comes down to the will of the government to regulate. Even if we had a universal Medicare buy-in, if you buy into the Firebagger rhetoric about the uselessness of regulation and the corrupt nature of Democrats… what makes you think providers wouldn’t just constantly lobby Congress to inflate Medicare reimbursement rates? Heck, this is why Medicare reimbursement rates are already significantly higher than what other countries pay out, including the private non-profits you mention.
At the end of the day, you can’t say regulations will just be meaningless and still claim to be a progressive, because even the effectiveness of single-payer depends on the government’s willingness to stand up to the profit motives of providers.
On that note, every progressive should be very, very happy that states will soon have complete, unchecked discretion to end for-profit insurance in the individual and small group markets.
