Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Where tasty lettuce and good mustard aren’t elitist.

We still have time to mess this up!

We survived Breitbartpocalypse!

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Screw the Judean People’s Front. Splitters.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

How do you get liars to care about the truth?

There’s some extremely good trouble headed their way.

I personally stopped the public option…

… makes me wish i had hoarded more linguine

Yes we did.

… down to kool-aid drinkers and next of kin at the trump White House

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Nevertheless, she persisted.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Shelter in place is one thing. Shelter in pants is quite another.

Han shot first.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Shocking, but not surprising

Take Your Wingnuts to Washington

Great work by Steve over at No More Mister Nice Blog on the wingnuts currently throwing bricks through windows and generally attempting to create a climate of fear and intimidation. It really is as simple as Rachel says in the video over there- what they could not achieve in the ballot box they are attempting to achieve through violence and intimidation.

The next plan for these clowns is to march on Washington on 19 April (the anniversary of Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing) with their guns to… well, you know why they are doing it, because you have a working brain. No doubt, however, it is time for another thought piece at Reason on the myth of right wing violence (prefaced, as always with “Other than Oklahoma city, the abortion murders, the Atlanta Olympics… what have the Romans done for us?”). Because remember- it is just a coincidence that gun nuts, militia movements, and angry mobs are on the rise. It has nothing to do with the fact that Clinton Obama is President and Republicans are whipping people into a froth on a daily basis.

It is just an extra special bet of deliciousness that the person behind all this is on Social Security disability.

*** Update ***

The Wasilla Wingnut tells her supporters to “reload,” then provides a map with rifle scopes over the names of legislators who voted for #HCR.

But don’t worry- glibertarians say this is normal.

Liberals in the DC area should counterprotest by silently carrying large signs bearing no words, only pictures of the death and destruction of the OKC bombing.

Apparently, this is “patriotism” to these folks:

Thugs. The thuggery on the right is truly astounding to watch. Go to a few right wing blogs such as Riehl World View and it is a true eye opener. I commented on there some very civil counterpoint to some of their arguments and my comments were removed after a short period of time. They don’t even want discussion at all… it’s armed insurrection that they seemingly are looking for. I am truly astounded at where we are in this country right now.

Even Politico is writing about the hornet’s nest that’s been stirred up.

Louise Slaughter and Bart Stupak have received death threats.
    …
A tea party participant published what he thought was Thomas Perriello’s home address and urged disgruntled voters to “drop by” for a “good face-to-face chat.”

Vandals broke windows at Slaughter’s office in New York and Gabrielle Giffords’s office in Arizona.
    …
And angry voters are planning to protest this weekend at the home of Steve Driehaus — who’s already seen a photograph of his children used in a newspaper ad published by reform opponents.

It is a federal crime to threaten a member of Congress.

That’s been the white power fantasy all along. Something will happen that eliminates the federal government they hate for integration and liberalism, and they become the only wall against a rampaging horde of gang members, who of course will be out of control rampaging with no reason. While at the same time their kids buy pot and such from the same gang members, financing the gang activities activities.

It’s the rampaging black horde fantasy that led to tragedy at Katrina, when black evacuees who simply wanted to cross the bridge into the county were gunned down by those types because of that kind of fear.

That parallels their belief about black people and latinos exactly: that without their racist asses, we are uncontrollable folks who would rather steal than simply reorganize to survive, and that we would burn their houses down.

I don’t know how to feel about that. It is as depressing as it is scary…

Not only that, none of the “main” media outlets are free of any blame. I don’t want to see any finger pointing at Fox and saying that “They are promoting this behavior!”

Bullshit! You are promoting it as well by never condemning it and making moral equivalence arguments to make sure the horses stay neck and neck. Or, in my wife’s favorite show, “The Amazing Race”, you make sure that every stage has a point where even the team most far behind will have the chance to catch up.

What is totally irksome for me is that the Republicans whipping up the crazy with overheated rhetoric will be whining up a storm if some of the crazies go well, crazy (and it some point they will because this level of vitriol has to explode somewhere/somehow). They will shout it to the mountain tops that these are just the actions of a few and don’t have anything to do with them. The MSM will not call them on it or will soft pedal by saying the left has their crazies too.

Of course these Republicans are also likely to think that violence and sex in movies, TV, and video games are to blame for some of society’s ills. And they will not understand when they are accused of inconsistency and hypocrisy.

I doubt Palin reviews anything that comes out under her name. She’s a poorly-marketed niche product.
I don’t think they have any larger sense of how anything looks to a wider audience.
It’s a gun theme, and if she saw it at all, she did that idiotic thumbs-up after 5 seconds.
You’ve worked for people like her. Everyone has.
    “Awesome!”
It doesn’t matter if it’s an insane piece of crap that you knocked off in thirty seconds. She hired you, therefore you are GREAT!

Naaah. Someone may be killed. There may even be bombings like the OKC incident. But a military force these people ain’t. Way, way too many of them are elderly and in poor health, and they’re impossible to lead. Look at the way the Tea Parties fracture and squabble amongst themselves. You could even get a gun-wielding violent mob or two (although I think they’re too cowardly for that), but they just can’t work together enough to be anyone’s weapon.

EDIT: Assassination, now – that’s possible. That only takes one crazy with a gun in the right place at the right time. Oy.

It is a federal crime to threaten a member of Congress.

Last night I went to a class at my temple, which is adjacent to Dianne Feinstein’s house. Her street was blocked off by a Federal Protective Service vehicle, and the FPS cop was out of his truck, looking directly at and speaking to everyone who walked by. And temple security (ex-IDF) was carrying openly instead of concealed.

I’m glad they/we are getting good protection, but dammit, I hate that it’s necessary.

I have to say I’m actually a bit suprised how far out on a limb Fox News is going here, both ideologically and in temperament. Ideologically, the Beck wing is getting very close to crossing the business wing which would seem a bit dangerous (the bank bailout outrage for instance was a direct assault on the Fox Business types- I’m eagerly a waiting their language on new financial regualtions and how they square their desire to “protect freedom” and their belief that Wall Street is an evil cabal; that and immigration reform where the big business wing is pretty clearly in favor of at least guest workers but the right populist wing is in full on “brown panic” mode) while in terms of dispositon I would have thought O’Reily’s near liability in the murder of Dr. George Tiller (frankly, he got very lucky that Tiller was killed by a long-time protestor- if it had been a newly activated guy he almost certainly would have lost) was a warning sign- I mean what happens if a man in a Glenn Beck shirt opens fire on a crowd or sets off a bomb- how does FOX not take a massive hit from that (they’d be a lot better off if they had him explain to people that direct action is wrong)? (The ultimate nightmare for them is someone taking a shot at Obama- frankly if that happens I think FOX News HQ in NYC might become a place with a danger level commeasurate with the Green Zone- and that the radio people like Rush- if he hasn’t moved to Florida by now- might seriously be in danger of losing their lives, I was talking with people about that this weekend after the bricks started flying- if Obama is wounded much less killed by one of these whackos- what are the odds of Glenn Beck working in NYC for more than week without incident; I put them at 20%- O’Reily got away with the virtual lynching of Tiller because Tiller’s not a major public figure, if Beck did the same to Obama he’s in all likelihood a dead man.)

    March 24, 2010 at 12:40 pm

NickM- I think a major incident could happen, and while I think with a large enough body count there’d be a backlash (and yes it would take a large body count- simply flying a plane into a building or opening fire in a liberal church apparently doesn’t enrage people) but I think there’s one thing that even the whackiest of the GOP public servants fears- someone taking a shot at the President- the impact of something like that (and frankly, I hate to even think about it: I feared it early on a bit but until this weekend it had been months if not a year since I’d worried about it seriously rather than abstractly) would be blood in the streets- put it this way I wouldn’t want to be a talk radio host or Fox News personality that week, heck it’d probably be pretty dangerous to be a birther or “he’s a Nazi” congressperson in DC.

    March 24, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Roger- My bad, though one would think that they would have noticed the far, far more recent symbolism and switched to 4-15, especially since Obama hasn’t really done anything that impacts the 2nd amendment (heck, in large part the Democratic party has conceded on Gun Control and the NRA types aren’t really agitating for the removal of Brady anymore, since the expiration of the assualt weapons ban and the SC decision on DC its been pretty quiet).

@Little Dreamer: I don’t think they are thinking that far ahead. I watched a clip from last night’s Maddow in which the idiot blogger advocating breaking windows (while living off his Disability checks) was frothing at the mouth at the supposed tyranny of a democratically-elected government. He kept talking about how they were armed and ready to go. “Don’t make us shoot you!” was his basic threat. (ETA: It’s probably in the clip linked by Cole. Sigh. Sorry).

I hate this shit. These punk-ass cowards are gonna get someone else killed. As for the ‘random act of violence’ bullshit, Olbermann had a great bit on that the other day. No problem. The South certainly seems to have more than its share (of knuckleheads), and the temptation to trash it is understandable. We just need the occasional reminder that not everyone in the South is a jerk. And for those who aren’t jerks, but have ties that bind (e.g. jobs, mortgages), it’s already sucky enough to live in the midst of tea baggery without having to consider the prospect of being abandoned by saner regions of the nation.

Word. There are plenty of Obama supporters back home in MS who wouldn’t want to be on the inside of that fence! Give them time to relocate, pls.

I have often fantasized about what would happen to my hometown without all its federal pork. They say they hate it, until the government wants to close our local NAS to reduce spending. Then they fight tooth and nail to keep those fed dollars. A huge percentage of what economy there is comes from federal sources.

And the Greenland idea is awesome, because I love the idea of the Lord of the Flies shenanigans and sustenance labor fail that would ensue. My grandparents knew how to rear and slaughter livestock and manage a family farm, but I’m pretty sure my generation has lost the art.

Have you noticed that the real violence almost always come from the left, yet the MSM would have you believe it is from the right? In the ’70s it was the Black Panthers, the Black Liberation Front, the Weather Underground, the SLA, the animal rights nuts and the eco-terrorists, just to name a few. Lee Harvey Oswald was a tool of Cuba or the Soviet Union depending on whose theory you buy. Yet the MSM in the early days after the assassination had the country convinced in was the right wingers in Dallas. Today it is the SEIU thugs who are the Democratic party’s Brownshirts, and the radical student mobs on campuses who enforce the academy’s suppression of free thought and speech. Funny how much the media narrative departs from the reality.
