I’m starting to like my Kaptur:
Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) is a yes on reform today, according to an interview she gave to a local ABC station in Ohio this morning.
Kaptur votes yes on Stupak and yes on reform back when it passed the House the first time last year. In recent days, she’s aligned herself with the Catholic Bishops, who have urged a no vote on the Senate bill in the House over the Senate bill’s language regarding abortion funding.
Today, Kaptur appears to have changed her tune, coming down on the side of other Stupak amendment supporters who now plan to vote for the Senate bill.
I’m not surprised that the Stupakers are breaking “yes”. I think that many of them were originally motivated by some principled, if misguided, views, rather than by political cowardice. Unlike, say, Michael Arcuri.

That, plus their knuckles are smarting.

OT, butThe secret service needs to get on this…NOW!!!!

I spoke to folks in Kaptur’s office each of the last three days, following the script, saying that I’d proudly displayed a Kaptur sign on my lawn in 08 and wanted to be able to do so this year. Assuming the report’s true, I’ll be making a donation to her campaign tomorrow to reward the vote. Can we get an ActBlue site up for her?
DougJ
@ohio:
I’ll talk to John about an ActBlue site for her.
And thanks for your calls!
lamh31
Grain of salt guys, but Luke Russert was “reporting” that Stupak 8 was meeting with the White House attorneys to finalize the language on the executive order regarding HCR and abortion.
If ya’ll are right, and whatever the language, the exec order cannot go past Hyde’s rule, basically seems like Stupak et al are just trying to save face
Cowards!
JGabriel
I’m not sure why, because I really don’t know much about her, but I always thought Kaptur would eventually be one of the votes to flip “yes”.
Glad to see my totally uninformed assumption was correct.

ellie
I called and her mailbox was full so I left a thank-you e-mail message on the contact page of her website. It is only open to constituents though.
Ash Can
@lamh31: You should forward that link to them. I’m sure they’d appreciate knowing about this.
lamh31
@Ash Can:
how do i do that?
me
Is this because of the EO and does anyone know what it contains?
DougJ
@lamh31:
Better “yes” votes with a lame face-save than “no” votes.
I don’t care how dumb it looks, we need the votes.
lamh31
@DougJ:
yeah bette yes than no, but is it bad that a little part of me still wants someone to open a can of whup azz on that mofo stupidpak come election time.
Mike Kay
there is no federal funding of abortion.
it’s like arguing the world isn’t flat with these loons.
JGabriel
@lamh31: Holy shit, that guy is just blatantly asking for it. And the twit claims he’s black, too.
You’re right, the Secret Service needs to be looking in on that guy ASAP, like yesterday.
.
Violet
I can hardly watch this, I’m so jumpy. Sheesh. It’s like Election 2008 all over again. I was feeling so confident, and yet, and yet…you never know until it’s all done and the votes are counted.
Ash Can
@lamh31: I suggest starting here. Based on what they say on this contact page, it may be better to call the nearest field office and give them the URL over the phone.
ds
Was there ever any political sense in switching from yes to no?
You’ll just go from being a representative who voted for soshulism to being a weasel who voted for soshulism.
If the Stupak krew really accepts the executive order deal, this thing is in the bag.
Mike Kay
@me:
it probably reiterates that there is no federal financing of abortion.
Again, there not a single cent allocated to abortion, but these clowns can’t comprehend english.

It’s like the Super Bowl, the NBA Championship, The Final Four, the Stanley Cup, and the Masters all rolled into one.

Kaptur’s been on Bill Maher’s show a time or two and has always struck me as a reasonable progressive.
JenJen
Driehaus is a firm NO, according to my shitty local newspaper.
Hope at the end of the year, he can reflect on the whole two years he spent in Congress, and wonders what he could have possibly done differently.
mistermix
@DougJ:
Absolutely. Most of the rationales that are trotted out at the last minute for a bill like this are usually dumb when you think about them, kind of like a McGuffin in a Hitchcock movie. But they get the job done.
Violet
@Texas Dem:
Yep. I can hardly watch it. I can’t bear look away.

OT, but this is funny:

Awesome stuff from Plouffe this morning. Link:
Rove: “This thing is paid for with Bernie-Madoff-style accounting. … It’s a gigantic disaster.”
Plouffe: “Karl and the Republicans would be familiar with that.”
Rove: “You will bankrupt the country if this bill passes. … For God’s sake, will you stop throwing around epitaphs [sic] and deal with the facts for once, David? … We will fight the election on this,. and the Democrats will have significant losses in the House and Senate as a result of this bill.”
Plouffe: “If Karl and a lot of Republicans want to call the election already, they ought to break out that ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner.”
Rove: “That’s cheesy, David. … You should not denigrate the mission of the USS Abraham Lincoln.”
Axel Edgren
Have you all seen this yet?

That was from this morning’s THIS WEEK.
EDIT: OH COME ON VIOLET! NOT COOL.
eemom
so the EO would do nothing more than restate existing law, provide cover to Stupidpak’s big fat stupid ass and the asses of others who are even stupider than he is, and get us more Yes votes.
Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
otoh, it could be THE GREATEST THREAT TO WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN A GENERATION. They might as well start handing out COAT HANGERS at Planned Parenthood.
Depends who you ask.

@lamh31: It follows logically if the health of the party trumps the health of the nation, people, and all other things. Nice little pocket view into their very souls.

Fitzwili: Good call, Fitz.

Hmm, skipping over the fact that Medicare, rather than Civil Rights, would have been the more appropriate analogy, I suspect that Obama thinks the Civil Rights legislation was the right thing to do, no matter the cost.

A word about Kaptur, my understanding is she is a candidate that has always been very close to labor, which is very strong in her district. If labor is calling people they have supported in the past and telling them if they vote against the bill they will be looking for primary challengers she is a prime example of someone who if she has any brains would think twice about voting no. That may have something to do with her conversion.
Fitzwili

I want to thank lamh31 for posting that twitter threat – daylight and exposure are the best weapons we have to combat violence
kay
I faxed her all week.
I skipped yesterday because I could not compose a fax without veering into vitriolic rants.
I’m a little bitter, though. I resent the hell out of the way she and others portrayed women’s health as limited to their reproductive potential.
I’m very familiar with her record and I’ve defended her here, and I suppose I’ll get over it, but the terms of this “debate” she insisted on hit me, personally, a little too close to the bone.
We had another abortion debate without mentioning women. We have to stop doing that, and we have to stop letting people who won’t allow women’s health into the debate direct the conversation.
She took part in that, and she had an opportunity to broaden the debate, and make it more honest and respectful, and she chose not to do that.
Camchuck
@JenJen: Gawd, Driehaus. You already voted for it once. How can this possibly help you?
I grew up in Cincy and campaigned for the last dem to hold this seat (elected in ’92 and run out in ’94), so I understand what a tough spot Driehaus is in. Still, his reelection chances go from slim to none with a no vote today (IMHO).
tammanycall
I really don’t like the idea of an anti-choice Democrat being labeled a “progressive” (or a “liberal”, for that matter.) If she were anti-Labor or a climate change skeptic she would not be considered a progressive, but since she’s a dick on choice that’s okay, because hey – the Democratic Party doesn’t give a shit about women’s issues, right?
Yeah, I still hate her.
Violet
@Axel Edgren:
Lolz. Great minds and all.
Duane
@ds:
If only I could get Congressman Space to explain it to me. You know i have told many folks that i would almost—ALMOST mind you—-rather be ticked off with my republican Congressman than disappointed in my Democratic Congressman. I am afraid i may have to face that scenario again after Zack votes no. but to his credit(?) he claims to really, really hate the Senate bill, so there is that.
Fitzwili
@ Ash Can
I used the info you looked up to call so thank you!
Nethead Jay
@tammanycall: I’m with you there. Good on her for coming down on the right side on this vote and as I understand she’s okay on most issues, but if you’re anti-choice I don’t think you should get to claim to be either progressive or liberal. And as far as I’m concerned it’s one of the important long-term battlegrounds.
