The last thread is getting too long to load, and my google-fu is not strong enough to retrieve a useable clip of the Olympic opening ceremonies. (Although if anyone wants to point me in the right direction — my email is at the top right of this page.) So you get the all-purpose feel-good post featuring…
HARP MUSIC!
and PUPPY!
(Commentor John O’s new puppy Dweezil)
Here’s for some good news this weekend…
OriGuy
First! (Sorry.)
I missed the Olympics; I went to Santa Cruz to catch Huun Huur Tu with Carmen Rizzo. Tuvan throat-singing blended with techno, sort of.

Repost from last thread:
@John O, gorgeous puppy, hope you didn’t get any snot on him.
@AL: Cue Rachel Maddow spoofing Hugo Chavez and his harp gimmick.
Tomorrow, I set out on an epic artistic endeavor. I am going to watch the Hungarian epic masterpiece Satantango for the first time and in its entirety, all 7+ hours. The first shot of the movie is on youtube, and it is as mundane as it is intricate, methodical, and exciting.

Big damn weekend. Today is Chinese (& much of East Asia, I guess) New Yrs., Sun is VD, & Mon is Sheets & Linen Sale Day across These United Snakes.
Something good has to come of it.
Angry Space Cadet
Am the only person in the world who does not care about the Olympics? I also have no urge to see Avatar.
MikeJ
@Angry Space Cadet: I like some of the olympic stuff. Mostly the stuff where you get from the top of the mountain to the bottom faster than anyone else.
I agree with you on having no desire to see Avatar.
Bill E Pilgrim
@freelancer: Thanks for that link, that looks great. I’m going to look for the DVD in my travels today.
That’s what I like about these blogs, you never know what you’ll find.

@Angry Space Cadet:
Nope, I have the same affliction so you ain’t alone.
I am up late/early making my homemade cinnamon rolls for the wife and kids as a treat. I figure the wife will like one for breakfast and will take a pan to work to
show off toshare with her fellow wage slaves. She is taking the next week off and we are hoping for some clear weather so we can haul the motorcycle out and head up the coast for some fun. If the weather won’t cooperate then we’ll take the Mustang and do the same.We’re getting the winter itch and it’s time to scratch it. Today it’s supposed to be partly cloudy and around 60 out so I will be dragging the motorcycle out later on to clean and gas it up (plus a quick rip up the coastal highway to Humbug Mountain!).
How’s your morning going?
PurpleGirl
Cute puppy. Lots of luck with Dweezil, John O.
SiubhanDuinne
That puppeh is really adorable. And Dweezil, what a great name for him.
I gave up on the Olympics thread not long after it hit the 300 mark. Too much for my BlackBerry to handle.
There is snow everywhere and it’s lovely now in is early-morning crispness. But the roads are treacherous, so I’m just going to stay in until afternoon. Going back to sleep for a while, in fact, seems like a fine idea.
(Yawn.) Later, y’all.
SGEW
@Angry Space Cadet:
You’re not the only one, Cadet.
jeffreyw
The puppeh wars begun they have.
John O
Thanks everyone! Especially for the front page photo, AL!
He’s a joy, but in for a tough weekend of hard-core potty training.
Just have to do it, as miserable as we’ll both be since it should get all the way up to a balmy 25 degrees or so here in Chicagoland.
I’ll e-mail you the backstory, AL, though it’s kind of boring, in between trips outside today and tomorrow, I hope.
John O
@jeffreyw:
No wars here! I’m Switzerland when it comes to the puppies.
Adorable. Also, FUWP for eating my last post thanking everyone for the kind words, and promising AL I would type up a fairly boring rescue story when I got a chance.
demkat620
Oh, I want that Puppeh. He’s a golden right? They are the best. dogs. evar.
The Jack Russell Terrorist was hitting me in the face with his paw to wake me up. He is such a brat.
jeffreyw
@John O:
No neutrality in the puppeh wars. Pick a side you must.

Adorable puppy! And I don’t know if I’ll watch the Olympics. I’m not into the curling or outdoors events, and only moderately enjoy the skating, but not enough to sit through three minutes of program for five of commercials.

@jeffreyw: The puppies in this pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreyww/4244878395/in/set-72157622962522418/ have caused puppylust in my heart. Especially the one on the left.
jeffreyw
@debit: Mrs J informs me that all of the puppehs in that pic have been placed. I think this little girl is still there. Note that she has the “please take me home with you” look down pat.
John O
@jeffreyw:
Can do not. Beautiful are all puppies!
mr. whipple
I had horrible nightmares. I was being chased by a pink floating gumibear and Donald Southland kept trying to get me to smoke pot out of a big crystal bong-like apperatus and all the while Bob Costas was narrating and said, over and over, ‘just sayin’. I need coffee.
Robin G.
Puppeh!
I also call for good news. My friend is 41 weeks pregnant and would really like to not be so anymore. I also need her to have this baby, in that I’ll be the daycare, and my cats are taking over the bassinet. If that kid doesn’t get in there soon I’ll never be able to reclaim it. So good news in the form of uterine contractions would be welcome.
SiubhanDuinne
LOL @ Mr. Whipple’s nightmare! Yeah, Bob Costas and his “Just sayin’ ” got very damned annoying — although I’ll take him any day of the week over Matt Lauer, whom I used to like but who has become an insufferable pompous twit in recent years. Just sayin’ . . . .
debit
@jeffreyw: I am helpless against such looks. I hope she finds a place soon, she sure likes like a total sweetie.
jeffreyw
@jeffreyw: Mrs J rises! She tells me that the sweet black doggie will be featured at an adoption event today, along with her equally sweet brother. Sponsored by these fine folks.

Speaking of puppies:
Can this poodle wearing a tinfoil hat get more fans than Glenn Beck?:

In all fairness, it is a cute poodle.

Here’s my favorite harp piece: Joanna Newsom’s Emily.
Studio version here.
Haunting shit.
Freemark
John O, I guess you listened to the guy in the “rent-a-puppy” commercial and “got the lab”.
But seriously, I don’t know if you had a lab before so I will give you a warning. They are most dangerous when happy. Their tails are lethal weapons able to inflict severe bruising on legs and remove any object, no matter its weight, from any low lying table.
gypsy howell
@mr. whipple:
Was Celine in it? ‘Cause that would have been a nightmare.
gypsy howell
What are the chances I’m going to get to actually watch some of the snowboarding competition, as opposed to a few brief recaps of the winners and big spills and then the medal ceremony, interspersed with long stretches of saccharine “lifestory” pieces and Bob Costas’ babbling?
burnspbesq
This photo gallery from the AJC is pretty amusing.
http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/atlanta/snow-atlanta-021210/
I’m guessing that the Duke-Bucknell lacrosse game, which is supposed to be played in ATL this afternoon, is a casualty of the snow.
Laettner celebrated Rivalry Week by going into heat. Mucho fun, which I mostly missed because I was in New York for work (me in the kind of trouble that only diamonds can fix). Caesar (140 lbs of lapdog) no likee. Caesar pee everywhere in house. Caesar banished to back yard. Kitteh wins!
John O
@Freemark:
Freemark, everyone says “lab” when they see him, but the only thing we’re sure about is that his mom had some spaniel in her. The rest is just a guess. Seems like a good guess, but all in the litter from a high-kill shelter in KY looked pretty different from one another. His coat to me has winter dog traits, like Malamute or Husky or even Shepherd, as one of his sibs looked, but I don’t really care.
He’s very good natured, no problems with the crate from day 1, and we’re doing hard core potty training this weekend.
Plus, I’m one of those people who can’t get upset by happy dog damage!
John O
@Freemark:
Freemark, everyone says “lab” when they see him, but the only thing known about his lineage is that mom had some spaniel. The litter (6) was rescued from a high-kill shelter in KY, and they all looked quite a bit different, including possibly shepherd, Malamute, Husky, which his coat has the feel of. It’s soft but thicker than most labs.
I’m not one to get too excited about happy puppy damage, so that’s good, I guess.
Oscar Leroy
What a cute puppy )

@mr. whipple:
LMMFAO. Bob Costas can be such a tool. Though Matt Lauer has been wearing these horrible striped suits of late. They’re so bad, I swear he’s vibrating.
And that puppeh is bee-yoo-tee-ful. I just want to snuggle Dweezil’s fur, little ears….awww, puppehs are fabulous. :) And Dweezil is a fabulous name, LOL.
burnspbesq
I predict that our genial host will be doublepluscrabby today. WVU lost to Pitt in men’s basketball last night – in triple overtime.
Dave Fud
@Robin G.: You’re not the only one. My best friend (and wife) is 40 weeks pregnant today, and we want things to move along. Any prayers to the uterine god are welcome.
madmommy
@burnspbesq:
I lived in Atlanta for several years as a kid. I remember a couple of epic ice storms that had tree limbs and power lines snapping everywhere! Then there were the knuckleheads who insisted on driving at normal speeds on the hills. The towing companies will make killing hauling cars out of ditches.
Spaying or neutering the kitties as soon as is possible helps to avoid the misery you describe. The howls they produce when in heat are just unbearable.
So you’ll be hitting a jewelry store before flying home, I take it?
burnspbesq
@madmommy:
Laettner has an appointment with the vet next Thursday.
I’m hoping for a halo effect from the anniversary present – approximately .6 carats of emerald-cut earrings.
madmommy
@burnspbesq:
Hmmm…nice. But better to be safe than sorry, right? And tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Best get shopping!
WaterGirl
@debit: Same here for me last week, but for me it was the one that is furthest from the camera. There are almost no dogs at our humane society; apparently Murphysboro gets them all, especially the cute ones.
Max
@Robin G.: When I lived in Orlando, one of the radio teams had this tip for inducing labor that seemed to work for a lot of people.
1. have the mom buy the blue box mac and cheese 2. the dad or partner or whomever needs to make the mac and cheese, while the mom relaxes 3. mom eats the mac and cheese with steak sauce on it (as much or little as is desired, as long as there is some).
People say engagement chicken works, so maybe this does too.

@madmommy:
I’d be a bit more inclined to shop if I hadn’t just paid $3k in property taxes on the house, which is spouse’s separate property. Indirectly subsidizing a start-up business in a recession is teh suckitude.
gbear
@DougL (frmrly: Conservatively Liberal):
Ugh. We’ve still got winter severe rash in MN. I had to give up on shoveling the driveway full width because there’s nowhere left to throw the snow. Reading that someone can think about riding a motorcycle today makes me want to cry.
celticdragonchick
Lovely harp music. I have taken a break from my own harp playing for a bit, but I suppose it’s time to start practicing again for Scottish Harp competitions this summer.
There are some nice videos on youtube of harp interpretations of the music locket theme from Pirates of the Caribbean.

There cannot be a puppy war without this entry: TBoggs’ video of his new bassett puppy tripping over his own ears.

@WaterGirl: Heh. As I said above, I am helpless against the pleading look and thus cannot go to shelters. Chloe ambushed me at a pet adoption fair at the local Petco when I was shopping for cat food.
Oddly enough, while I do sometimes yearn for a puppy, I can be happy with a snuggle and some puppy kisses before moving on. It’s the older dogs that break my heart and haunt me. I think that when our older cat goes, which may be a while since he’s 20 years old and still tussling with the 3 year old, I’d like to foster older dogs or cats for the shelter Chloe came from. But right now, we’re at our limit, pet-wise.
(Said shelter is Second Chance: http://www.secondchancerescue.org/ and I really like the work they do. And just in case anyone in MN is looking, they’re having another adoption fair at the Petco in Roseville today.)

@burnspbesq:
Well, I guess you’re off the hook then :)
Gotta go clean my dirty house. Ugh.

Here’s a local group I like a lot which features a harp:

As a Golden Retriever maven, I’d say that there is definitely Golden in there somewhere. Wonderful that you took in this sweetie. Love the name too!

Hey, that floating bear was the highlight of my two-year-old’s night. He kept asking when it was going to come back.
And as far as the latter goes, how do you think they came up with all that stuff in the first place?

@djork: There’s also “Can this pickle get more fans than Nickelback?”
asiangrrlMN
Looooove Dweezil and all the other puppehs on this thread!
@debit: I DVR it so I can skip everything but the actual events. And, that PetCo is where I got my boys. Feline Rescue. Made a good friend (their foster mom) in the process.
@Angry Space Cadet: I really enjoy the Olympics, but I have less than no desire to see Avatar. Hey, if athletes can give a hundred and ten percent, I can have less than no desire.

@John O:
John O now you will have to get a cat and name it Moon Unit.
(V. Cute Puppy, congrats!)

@SB Jules:
That was cool as hell :)
The harpist looked like he had a Paraguayan style harp. I know that some Latin music uses that style of harp which is played standing up. You see it in some mariachi bands, rarely. (I remember Linda Ronstadt had a harpist in her band when she released Caciones de mi Padre.)
Here is Linda Ronstadt in concert with a Latin harp rather prominently placed just behind her… :)

@celticdragonchick:
Did you know I can sing every single song on Canciones de Mi Padre I and II ? I have used that ability to great effect at parties w/mariachi bands in Mexico.
At some point the musicians always turn to each other and say “Ay, Linda…”

@celticdragonchick
Loved the link; I haven’t heard Linda in a long, long time. I believe Rey Fresco’s harp player’s father made his harp.
