And it’s one thing for all the smart guys and girls “to know” that Bush and Blair conspired to go to war against Iraq. It’s another to get the info in frightening detail.
Tony Blair and George Bush ‘signed in blood’ a secret deal to topple Saddam Hussein almost a year before Iraq was invaded, Britain’s former U.S. ambassador suggested yesterday.
…
Sir Christopher Meyer said the ex-Prime Minister’s stance on Iraq ‘tightened’ a day after the two men spent an afternoon meeting in private at the former President’s family ranch in Texas.
…
He also told the Iraq Inquiry that officials found themselves ‘scrabbling to find a smoking gun’ to prove Saddam had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) while the U.S. prepared troops for the 2003 conflict.

Speaking of which. Visited the doggie pound today for a first look at hopefuls. This is the boonies, so they only had 8 or 9 cuties to pick from. And all of them, except for a psychotic chihuahua, were fairly large dogs, as were the two or three puppies when they grew up. But there was one white short haired mut/shepard female who was 9 months and close to my 30 pound limit, who was just sweet as honey. I usually only get male dogs for pets, but she was just so calm and affectionate, I will have to think about it this weekend.

B-Ball season has started, so football is dead to me. And KY Wildcats are rated #6 or 7, but think that’s a little high, amybe a lot high. They got a big freshman center though, who may well be the next Shaq O’neill when he gets some more experience.

Until there’s a tournament instead of the absurd BCS, I simply can’t take college football seriously. Who decided that the Big 10 champion can (in theory) win a national title, but the Mountain West champion can’t? If TCU and Cincinnati are undefeated, then they should play for a national title. End of story.

When you’re not working and you’re feeling bilious but decide that just maybe you can manage to get outside of yet another serving of stuffing, what you need is many good football games. @General Winfield Stuck: You know, when we went to get a dog at the pound, I wanted a medium or large dog. My Golden was just the best there was and I wanted another like her. Well we walked in and in the first cage was this tiny little JRT. He wagged his tale and looked cute and made me smile because his ears are so huge.
But there was a medium sized lab mix that I wanted to see. We took her in the room and she had no interest in us or the kids at all. So I asked to see the JRT. He was so happy to be with us We decided to take him. He was not what I wanted but boy has he fit in. I feel like John, he is my heart. My snuggler and reading buddy. He loves to have the kids read to him and we walk and play with his tennis ball. I never thought I would like a small dog, but I love this one.

@ploeg: McDaniels played at John Carroll University. Which is a DIII school. His dad(who’s a HS football coaching legend in Ohio) was friends with Nick Saban, which resulted in a job for McDaniels at Michigan State after McDaniels graduated.

He was with the NE Patriots, as a quarterback coach and then the offensive coordinator last year.

Heh. I saw the headline on Tiger’s car accident so decided to google his name to see what news came up. First hit was the accident, second was the Appalachian Trail issue.
It does seem a bit odd that he was leaving his own home at 2:25 a.m. on Thanksgiving night/Black Friday morning. Was he heading to a shopping mall to camp out and get a deal on a laptop? Doesn’t seem likely.
Howdy stranger, have been wondering if you were doing alright. Honey Stuck is something no one has ever said to me. Though I can’t imagine why. I will likely get Maggie (her given name), if she is less than 30 pounds and won’t grow any larger. Unless I talk myself into one of the pups, who were also very sweet, and after asking the keepers there how big they will get. Hard to tell from a mixed breed puppie, how big they will grow.

OK, if it wasn’t official before, it is now: Time is staffed by idiots. They’re calling the decade just ending the worst decade ever.
Money quote:
Calling the 2000s “the worst” may seem an overwrought label in a decade in which we fought no major wars, in historical terms. It is a sadly appropriate term for the families of the thousands of 9/11 victims and soldiers and others killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the lack of a large-scale armed conflict makes these past 10 years stand out that much more. This decade was as awful as any peacetime decade in the nation’s entire history. Between the West’s ongoing struggle against radical Islam and our recent near-death economic experience — trends that have largely skirted much of the developing world — it’s no wonder we feel as if we’ve been through a 10-year gauntlet. Americans may have the darkest view of recent history, since it’s in the U.S. that the effects of those trends have been most acute. If you live in Brazil or China, you have had a pretty good decade economically. Once, we were the sunniest and most optimistic of nations. No longer.
Que what?

the lack of a large-scale armed conflict
WTF?
Iraq and Afghanistan combined at their peak consumed the attention of almost 200,000 American forces and over $12 billion a month. And they’ve lasted over eight years with no end in sight and killed hundreds of thousands of brown-people-who-don’t-count-to-the-smug-Villagers.
What exactly makes Iraq not a large-scale armed conflict? The lack of WW1-scale combat deaths on the US side?

I have been trying do my bit this weekend to become an amateur climate expert, including reading through and trying to figure out all of those emails that were hacked and released. My conclusion: I really beginning to think that what these global warming and evolution deniers are having trouble with is science is about more than laser guns and hovercraft. As long as science promises teleportation, everyone is OK with it. The moment it starts sounding like their parents – “pick up your toys,” “how would you like it if someone did that to you” – they start throwing tantrums: “Your no fun! You can’t tell me what to do.”

One of the things I love to do more than anything is to visit Thrift Shops, you never know what you are going to find and it is the “thrill of the hunt” type of deal, you have a list in your head of things that you would love to have but are too damn skinflint to pay full price for. Anyhoo, while browsing said thrift stores I saw an inordinate amount of those posing “doggeh” handbags, you know the handbags that people would carry with a tiny goggeh in them, they were usually pink, and sparkly, and stuff, with vented sides. When I looked at the handbags on the shelves of the thrift store shelves I kept thinking to myself “what happened to the dogs?” my guess is the teenaged princesses that got them quickly tired of the whole “you mean I have to feed it and water it and stuff” quite quickly, and therefore there are going to be a whole bunch of toy dogs at shelters just waiting to die. Dogs are not a fashion accessory (no matter what Paris and Brittany tells you) but I bet you there are a whole bunch of “used” Fashion accessories at the shelters right now, just trying to figure out what the hell they did to deserve this. Little dogs are not the devil, little dogs are just the pet rocks of 2009 and need to be rescued. Just a thought.

Fucking Time. Pussies. Just say it – Bush was the worst fucking president EVER, therefore this decade fucking sucked due to one man who never was legitimately elected in the first place.
Dude, it took you five extra minutes to subdue a Stanford team that is expected to do exactly nothing in a down year in the Pac-10. That is not an encouraging sign. Promise you won’t take it out on the dawg when y’all lose to Vandy.
Meanwhile, we shot 29 percent from the field, got nothing from our best player, and still handled UConn. Its too early for irrational exuberance, but this feels good so far.
As long as science promises teleportation, everyone is OK with it. The moment it starts sounding like their parents – “pick up your toys,” “how would you like it if someone did that to you” – they start throwing tantrums: “Your no fun! You can’t tell me what to do.”
But science doesn’t tell you what to do. There are lefty activists who believe, falsely, that global warming science dovetails nicely with their typically luddite wet dreams of alternative, renewable and sustainable energy (anything except nuclear or oil), pre-technological Eden. Science can inform, but it does not dictate, social or economic policy.
As an aside, it’s interesting how some climate change deniers come to their conclusions because of their religious beliefs. They totally reject the idea that Man can have a permanent negative effect on the world’s climate, because only God can work global level changes.
I don’t think that attitude is limited to religious folks. A lot of climate change denial revolves around the belief that humanity is incapable of affecting planetary-scale changes.

I don’t think that attitude is limited to religious folks. A lot of climate change denial revolves around the belief that humanity is incapable of affecting planetary-scale changes.
True, but the religious people have (what is for them) a more coherent background for their objection, and are surprisingly vehement about it. I banged up my knee post-Thanksgiving and used being homebound to catch up with some radio and blogs, and listened to a couple of shows which used the UK email hacks to whip up a lot of anti-climate change frenzy.
The super religious people are upset big time over the presumed arrogance of scientists who assert that humans can have any significant impact on God’s creation. It’s a Tower of Babel kind of thing, in which they think that some kind of divine smackdown is just around the corner.
The other people who don’t believe that humans can have a major impact on the Earth’s climate don’t seem to have the same degree of crazy anger at the root of their beliefs, although they do have some disdain for Al Gore and others.

But there was one white short haired mut/shepard female who was 9 months and close to my 30 pound limit, who was just sweet as honey. I usually only get male dogs for pets, but she was just so calm and affectionate, I will have to think about it this weekend.
Since everyone else has played the hallelujah chorus, I can afford to be the devil’s advocate: Make sure that Maggie is actually the dog you want to spend the next 10 or 15 or 20 years living with, because there are so many dogs out there looking that neither of you deserve to be introduced as “the one I settled for”. She’s presumably already lost one home, probably for something that wasn’t her fault (she got too big, or didn’t learn the rules about where to pee, or her people got into people trouble). Talk to the shelter people, see what they can tell you about her past & what they can predict about her future. Was she turned in because she “wasn’t housebroken”, and if so are you prepared to confine (crate) her & clean up the inevitable messes until she learns your rules? Does she have separation anxiety — will she howl, bark, or destroy your furniture when she’s left alone? Kind of a deal-breaker for an apartment dweller, unless you’re prepared to pay for doggy daycare of some kind…
If she’s 9 months old, she’s just coming into the doggy equivalent of teenager-hood, and she won’t be fully “adult” for another 15 months or so. So on the one hand, she’s still young enough to re-learn quickly, but on the other hand, you’ve still got what trainers call the ‘terrible ten-month-old’ burst of defiance/oppositionalism to live through. And Maggie’s probably not going to get a lot bigger — but if she hits a late growth spurt, are you prepared to re-negotiate with your landlord, or find another place to live? Basically, which of the usual doggy problems are you prepared to work with, and which of them are just not part of your skill set?
You said you’ve had dogs before, so probably none of this is news to you, but it’s so hard to resist those wistful doggy eyes (not to mention the sad shelter-worker stories) that the potential negatives need to be remembered as well. Keep thinking, go back & talk to the shelter people, be honest with them about your situation & what you want for a long-term companion. It’s not a bad idea to find your own vet in advance, and have them check Maggie (or whoever) over thoroughly, because shelters don’t always have the resources to go beyond the basics. Hybrid vigor is a wonderful concept, but that doesn’t mean your new crossbred darling hasn’t inherited hip displasia, luxating patellas, any of a half-dozen syndromes leading to early blindness, partial or complete deafness (common in all-white dogs from many different breeds, and you’d be amazed how hard it is to tell druing a casual introduction), or a metric ton of other problems. Any of which can be worked with/around, of course — but the more you know in advance, the better choices you’ll be able to make, for both you and Maggie.
Thanks Anne for taking the time to write this lengthy post. One of the good things about getting older, is learning the virtue of patience and consideration of details and consequences of making choices. Of course for impulsive me, that’s been a pretty long curve to make, but I get your drift. I am not in a hurry for this, and today was just a quick look at what they have, to give food for thought. Thanks again:)

I watched the entire Band of Brothers marathon on Spike yesterday, which included everything except the last two episodes, “Why We Fight” and “Points.” Recorded those on the DVR while I was at work tonight and will watch them tomorrow.
I had seen a few episodes a long time ago, as well as bits and pieces of some of the others, but for some reason I really got into it yesterday and wanted to watch the whole thing in chronological order. Somewhat against my will, because I was mildly irritated that some network decided that Thanksgiving Day was a great time to run a violent war marathon. But then Spike is the go-to channel for overactive, undirected testosterone.
Anyway, great series, and much better than Saving Private Ryan, which is a great movie built on the shaky foundation of a mediocre script.

And why aren’t there more football games on on Black Friday? When you’re not working and you’re feeling bilious but decide that just maybe you can manage to get outside of yet another serving of stuffing, what you need is many good football games. Because anything involving concentration and narrative flow is a non-starter.
Did watch the UFL championship game and was pleased to see Brooks Bollinger playing and doing OK. I always liked Brooksie.

Hard to tell from a mixed breed puppie, how big they will grow.

the lack of a large-scale armed conflict

They totally reject the idea that Man can have a permanent negative effect on the world’s climate, because only God can work global level changes.
r€nato
@Brachiator:

General Winfield Stuck

Thanks Anne for taking the time to write this lengthy post. One of the good things about getting older, is learning the virtue of patience and consideration of details and consequences of making choices.

I know that series is very realistic. It might put even more paranoid thoughts in my head about the Dawg beyond the ones I already have. He hates it when I get paranoid, cause then he’s spending half the conversation calming me down and assuring me he’s okay. So I’m thinking it’s better that I wait to watch that for awhile. I want to though it’s supposed to be fantastic.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Yes, it’s true, you did warn. But I’m a cold-hearted bitch, so I thought I would be ok.

I’m thinking this long silence is due to his current project. Hard to tell until he DOES get in touch with me, but if I were a gambling man (bets involving payouts I’d probably do anyway dn’t count) I’m sure it involves that.
