“He’s not lying, in the sense that those two words will not be found in any of those thousands of pages of the different variations of the health care bill…No, death panel isn’t there. But he’s incorrect. It’s kind of what Reagan used to do though when he used to talk about, say, the Evil Empire. You’re never going to find ‘The Evil Empire’ on a map of the world. He talked about that in terms that people could understand.”
Actually, yes you could find the Soviet Union on the map. In fact, you can allegedly see the remnants from your goddamned house. I think I need a drink.

I wonder what part of the Soviet Union she didn’t think was “evil” or an “empire”?
I guess that “not evil” part was the socialist part, which is just like the windfall taxes she raised on Alaskan oil companies to hike the yearly Alaska fund (re) distribution to Alaskan residents to 3200 bucks a year.
Who is it in today’s political arena who has REAL experience at socialist wealth redistribution again?
dmsilev
She probably thinks that the Evil Empire are those guys that went after Luke Skywalker in those movies. I mean, Reagan was talking about Star Wars all the time, and after the second one came out, Sarah instructed the Alaskan National Guard to start building defenses against giant armored walking things.

Sarah Palin parading her irresponsible stupidity and transparent lying before the raptly attentive focus of America’s mass media should, in any sort of rational sane world with a huge majority of the American electorate having greater intelligence than a chipmunk, quickly lead to the humiliating self-destruction of this woman and her band of wingnut GOP followers.
The only thing wrong with this is…she has the rapt attentive focus of America’s mass media, which simply can’t let go of such a shiny object that requires so very little thought and work on their part. And the fact that around 25% of the American electorate isn’t doing very well convincing the rest of us that they’re even as smart as a chipmunk. Or a moose.

Jews are degenerate, and we can kick their ass, but they have special powers!”
And now: “Arabs / Muslims are savage zealots, so we can kick their ass, but they have special powers!”

I find Palin as dumb as the rest of you, but I think Palin’s statement is being misinterpreted.
When she says you can’t find ‘The Evil Empire’ on a map, she means it literally. So yes, you’ll find the Soviet Union on the map, but it won’t be labled as ‘The Evil Empire.’

I think you’re right. And it made me think, but it only confused me more. I think she tries to deflect the accusation of having lied about the “death panels” by an inaccurate comparison. Yes, “evil empire” was a catchy way of saying that the Russians have a dangerous expansionist communist empire. And Sarah now claims that she used the term “death panel” to get her point across that there is a government bureaucracy that decides who gets to live and who gets to die. But…. there are no death panels or anything like it in the health-care bills as proposed. In fact, private health insurance is probably much closer to this vision of profitability-based health-care. So either Palin is trying to cover up her lie or she is just uttering random words to get through the interview.

DarrenG
@Petra: Exactly.
What’s happening here is the end game of 30 years of Reganomics devolving into a cargo cult. Wingnut dogma on this, or any other government program, follows a similar path of non-logic:
– Government wants to control (the rate of growth of) health care costs.
– Doing this will inevitably require providing less care than we do now (rationing!).
– Rationing requires an Official Rationing Board, or somesuch government agency to decide what care is provided, to whom, when, and under what conditions.
– Official Rationing Board will therefore have the power to decide who lives and who dies.
– Since only wingnuts have the intelligence and foresight to see this, they need to boil it down to simple terms the plebes can understand (only they can hear the Hayekian Bells).
– Ergo, Death Panels!
The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

The fact that her book is mean, petty, and lacking any substance again has been commented on. I just don’t understand what he can add. I do hope that he adds a lot.
If nothing else, conservatives who support her, and pundits who support her, have shown that in their minds the “dumbing down of American,” is now a conservative virtue.

The only possible improvement would be to add “… deep-fried word butter on a stick“.
While she’s not very smart, Palin is not unintelligent so much as she’s anintelligent. The issue of smartness or the lack thereof is not only unimportant to her base, they’re actively hostile to the concept that intelligence might be important to the way American voters are permitted to choose their president. For the Palinistas, the issue is not stupid-versus-smart, it’s ‘we make our own reality’-versus-‘the reality-based community’… and we of the RBC are the Enemy. She is actively courting (supporting) the preliterate-revanchists who still believe, like preschoolers, that wishing for something, insisting upon its reality, will make it true.
But she’s also being fed talking points by smarter people. Bringing up ‘the Evil Empire’ in reference to ‘death panels’ is less about making a coherent analogy — there’s an argument to be made, but Palin doesn’t seem capable of making it — than it is about linking Un-Preznidt Barackobama and his (established trope) death panels with the ancient (pre-American Idol!) & revered tradition of hating on the Evil Empire. Another catchphrase entered into the Palinista lexicon for future Two Minute Hates — mission accomplished! And the “Jews flocking to Israel in the coming days” phrase, as other commentors have pointed out: reminder to the Rapture-tards that Sarah unnerstands how Jeebus is a-comin’, and she’ll do whatever it takes to he’p Him! — The real question there is not Palin’s un-subliminal dog whistle, it’s who put the leading question into Barbara Walters’ mouth.
Wile E. Quixote
And the stupid is just getting better. Sarah is now calling for a primary challenger against Lindsey Graham in 2014. From an interview with Sarah in <a href=”http://www.nationalreview.com”, an interview done by none other than Rick “Starbursts” Lowry.
It’s meta-stupid. Indeed because it remains stupid regardless ofwhat scale you use to examine it or what angle you view it from it’s beyond meta-stupid and is in fact fractal stupid. Let’s see, we have Rich I Touch Myself Lowry doing an “interview” with Sarah Palin. An event which I’m sure had him texting everyone at NRO and annoying the fuck out of them with messages like “ZOMG! IM WITH SARAH! I CAN HAZ STARBURSTS”. Then we’ve got Rich, who with Sarah in the room is as giddy as my nephews on a sugar jag (but nowhere near as cute, intelligent or appealing) deciding to pitch a softball question to Sarah and to twit Lindsey Graham, who has been a very, bad, bad, bad naughty Republican. The stupidity then continues because Sarah tosses the softball back to Rich and gives him what he wants, which is an affirmation that Lindsey Graham is a very bad, bad, bad, naughty Republican and that perhaps voters should primary him so that the boy can get his mind right.
But the stupidity is only beginning, because Lindsey Graham was re-elected in 2008 and, barring an Act of God, or getting shot by a wingnut, is going to be in the Senate until 2014, where he can pretty much do anything he likes, regardless of how many sadz it gives to Rich and the usual gang of idiots over at NRO. I mean Graham could just come out tomorrow and say “Fuck you Rich Lowry, and fuck everyone at the Corner except that fat, ugly twat Kathryn Jean Lopez because I wouldn’t even fuck her with zombie Ronald Reagan’s cock. I’m going to kick back for the next five years, relax and let Al Franken tell me how to vote, oh, and I’m never, ever again going to go back to South Carolina.” and there is not one goddamned thing that anyone in South Carolina, much less at NRO could do about it because you can’t recall Senators.
But hey, when you’re suffering from terminal starburst intoxication shitting on someone over whom you have absolutely no power whatsoever, and face it, 2014 is a long ways away, and who could, if they desired, jack up your already fucked up party in a big, bad way, probably seems like a really good idea.

@valdivia:
She’s always conflated the end of life counseling provision with the “best practices” provision. She did it again here. She started with end of life and then applied some best practices fear-mongering to end of life.
Barbara Walters didn’t call her on it because Barbra Walters has no idea what’s n any of the proposals either, and that’s why Palin accepted the interview.
When you actually make some effort to read the various bills you really get a feel for how ignorant she is on what they contain.
Palin didn’t read a word of those proposals before she opened her big mouth.
It’s insulting, because as pissed off as we may get at Democratic legislators, those proposals are the product of six months hard work by hundreds of people.
Palin smeared them without bothering to understand any of it, and she hasn’t written a single word of legislation in her entire life.

Lowry was seen earlier in the day with a mirror taped to the toe of his right shoe!
Sources at the NRO said Lowry’s trousers had a large stain and he seemed rather spent after the interview. He was seen, leaning back in his chair, smoking a cigarette, muttering something about red high heels.

@Kyle: Right – and when there’s, say 1-5% waste discovered in government spending it’s all “SEE GOVERNMENT CAN NEVER DO ANYTHING RIGHT SHUT IT DOWN AND TURN IT OVER TO THE CORPORATIONS!”
But when company after company fleeces the living daylights out of consumers (cable cos, cell phone cos, insurance cos, Enron, etc) it’s all “well, that’s just one bad apple”.

@kay: When I first learned Sarah Palin was the VP nominee and heard her speech, I was a little shocked/didn’t know what to do.
But then watching her approval ratings dive into the fucking tank and never recover as the people (not DFH/political junkies like me, but “every day” peeps) got to know her, I quickly figured.
And then seeing all the Republicans in Alaska abandon her and go after her made me even less afraid of her.
She’s fine, like Paris Hilton, in the world of reality/TV celebrity, but she’s a fucking loser in the world of politics. A one-trick pony whose 15-minutes of political importance were up the minute she quit her job in AK.
Despite all that, if she does become the GOP nominee in 2012 I fully expect her to get 35% of the vote, minimum. Crazification factor + fear of a black planet.

@Svensker:
Indeed. She may as well be Mooby the Golden Calf.

You’ve never dealt with a compulsive liar before, have you? I have. It works like this:
Palin can say that she’s a millionaire because she has a million skin cells. She doesn’t see it as lying – she sees it as a technicality. She’s projecting that reasoning on Obama.
My guess is that if you went back and parsed her statements on various things, you’d find a lot of that. No, she didn’t buy all of those clothes – somebody else actually handed over the credit card, even though she kept them – not a lie to her. She didn’t fire the police chief, she forced him to give her a resignation letter when she was elected that 6 months later she pulled out of a drawer and accepted – not a lie. And on and on.
She’s not stupid, she’s a compulsive liar. Read her statements through that lens.
Church Lady
It’s cracking me up that both you and Steve Benen have ads featuring Sarah Palin’s photo on your blogs. I guess it’s like the Pamela Anderson boobs ad that used to be here – you just have no control over the ads placed here, but you’ll take the money they bring in.

I barely know where to begin. I can feel my brain cells dying just reading this woman.
From the Washington Monthly link:
What the hell does this even mean? Is she suggesting that before St. Ronnie, nobody knew that the Soviet Union was bad? I would suggest Lady Starbursts try reading Solzhenitsyn, but we all know that’s “old writing”.
Um….what? As far as I know (I was born in 1980, so correct me if I’m wrong), he was criticized for needlessly inflammatory language, not because “Evil Empire” wasn’t literally on the map. Also, is she really suggesting that we won the Cold War because St. Ronnie used that term? Sarah, let me introduce you to a couple of my friends: Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel. They had something to do with the collapse of communism. Please don’t giggle like an idiot because they have funny, not-real-mur’kan names, OK?

Just as mind-boggling is the fact that there are 400+ comments mostly (from the looks of it) agreeing with this guy.

@Church Lady:
Before I realized that she was just a clown who would say anything to get attention, Ann Coulter used to send me into fits of rage. It would piss me off to see ads for her on all of these liberal blogs. But then I realized if World Nut Daily or whoever was paying for them were actually wasting their money plastering her face on blogs where no one was going to click it and my blood pressure went down immensely.
That said, Balloon Juice has had quite an eclectic collection of ads. Along with the three armed Pamela, there was also the BBQ fork dog and Christian Filipina mail order bride service. It pays for the Tunch food.

That was not one of the better sentences I’ve ever written. Been reading too much Palin.
D-Chance.
Sully UPDATES! He’s back!
Wanna bet his Atlantic overlords forced him into a time-out?
Mark S.
@D-Chance.:
Sure it does, Sully. The obsession with Trig Palin is something that you alone possess. But I’m sure reading Palin’s book five times has allowed you to figure out things that were missed by the rest of the world.
Fulcanelli
If Palin actually manages to make a serious bid for the Presidency, the comments coming from Hillary’s direction in her support of Obama as her president and party leader will be the ones I’ll be watching with glee.
Watching Hillary go all Joan Crawford on Palin as the Republican nominee will be pure gold. The Clintonistas and Hillary’s PUMA minions savaging Palin in unison if and when Palin dares retaliate will be teh awesome. Female mud wrestling at it’s finest. BoB will be pleased, I’m sure.
Good Times for the Dems.
Martin
@D-Chance.:
Well, I don’t know about that – but The Atlantic subscribers don’t go for the tabloid shit, so Sully needs to restrain himself a bit here. A year or two back the print mag had Brittney on the cover (it was an appropriate article) and they apparently got a shitload of negative feedback about it.
I’m guessing the grown-ups are going to want to see what he tosses up first. I wouldn’t trust his judgement on this topic.

@New Yorker:
I was just 16 at the time… at that moment in history the Soviet Union was badly overextended in Afghanistan and people were openly talking about the financial collapse of the USSR. Much like now with Iran, the weak strategic position of our opponent was paying dividends diplomatically, and strategic arms control talks were making substantial progress.
Then Reagan remembered that he was John Wayne and that his real constituents were the heavy industries producing strategic weapons. He escalated the rhetoric, in March of 1983, when there was not even an election cycle underway to excuse it. This pretty much sank the strategic arms treaties for three or four years. Once the MX missile system was full funded, along with the completion of a major fleet upgrade and the first round of billions dedicated to the Strategic Defense Initiative, Reagan started talking about peace again.

@Xenos:
I don’t buy the wingnut meme that Reagan single-handedly brought down the Soviet Union. Obviously, Gorbachev, Walesa, and others were critical to the outcome. The falling price of oil and other commodities that the USSR sold to buy food also helped. And Chernobyl exposed the regime’s bankruptcy. Finally, of course, the loss in Afghanistan.
But actually Reagan played the situation pretty well. He stepped up the pressure in a way that probably helped exacerbate the internal tensions, and then cut a deal when he thought it could help shore up Gorbachev in his internal battles for reform. You may not remember this, but Reagan was heavily criticized from the right at that point.
The current Reagan hagiography is of course ridiculous. But he, Bush the Elder, and Clinton were all, in different ways, pretty good presidents who achieved some real successes for the country. Bush the Younger was something new under the sun, an unashamed fraud who did nothing but bring the country to ruin.

@Cain: Bureaucrats in Palinspeak are always government bureaucrats. For some reason, wingnuts don’t seem to understand that bureaucrats exist outside of government offices, even though some of them probably fit that job description.

Karmic justice would be for Palin to step outside of her home and be consumed by starving wolves, but this is too perfect to happen so I am hoping for an unfortunate choking incident at a Republican dinner party…

This is Bible Spice’s version of McMegan’s “technically true, but collectively nonsense bit”.
These people are all stupid in the same way and underneath have a common core of dishonesty. We only see variations on the theme.

should have been “….collectively nonsense” bit. not “…collectively nonsense bit”‘.

@EconWatcher: If Reagan did anything good for this country it was purely by accident. Luckily for all of us the GOP had not yet decayed into a completely corrupt, grossly incompetent passel of felons. They were just a mostly corrupt, often incompetent passel of felons.
Ahhhh…. those were the days.

And the current de-facto leader of the Republican party, thanks to John McCain.
