After Tunch’s Excellent Adventure (aka John Cole’s Very-Bad-No-Good-Terrible-Horrible Evening), possibly I was just primed to pick up this local news story…
It is, as they say, developing. But this much I know: All animal control officers and most veterinary facilities, here in Massachusetts, automatically scan “stray” animals for an RIFD chip. Even if the chip isn’t readable, or the registry’s address is out of date, an animal that has a chip is assumed to be (have been) somebody’s pet. In a high-turnover shelter, where unclaimed animals can be euthanized within as little as 24 hours, that may literally be a life-saver.
Here in the high-cost-of-living Boston area, vets charge $25 to $40 to inject the rice-grain-sized microchip between your pet’s shoulder and do the initial registration. Even for cats who never go outside, this seems like a reasonably affordable insurance policy.

Question: Did Obama have his spokespeople state the obvious about Fox News — that it’s not a news organization — to distract at just the time Obama and Congress are getting down to serious business on health care reform?
If so, all I can say is: pretty brilliant.

Uh, Anne-Laurie you may want to do a little reading up on these RFID chips before you go injecting one into your pets…
There is a possibility of a cancer link with the use of these chips.
It doesn’t appear that there’s a concrete, proven link yet but with the abnormally high rate of cancer in pets (especially dogs) due to breeding practices and the toxic crap found in many cheap dog treats, for example, I personally wouldn’t risk it. I would put one on a collar, but I wouldn’t inject it.
And yes, I know first hand what it’s like treating cancer in a beloved, four legged best friend having spent over $20,000 over a two year period fighting to prolong the life of one of the most awesome dogs I will ever have the privilege of sharing my life with. And I would do it all over again.

Just getting ready to go to bed, but I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly. I can’t remember looking forward less to a World Series. I am reduced to hoping that the reviled Phillies defeat the even more reviled Yankees in some particularly painful way.
Now, if the Angels were to rise up from their near-death coma . . . Uh, nah.

Are you sure you don’t want to rephrase that? Because, iirc, the fucking Tampa Bay Rays played in the Series just last year…And a few years ago, the Astros played the White Sox.

@asiangrrlMN: An attempt to answer the question, “why would a loving god allow the Yankees?” The essayist posits that with a Democratic administration we’ve used up the supply of good in the world and must suffer a balancing evil, like the Yankees.
It makes as much sense as anything Dobson or the Pope have ever said.

@asiangrrlMN: Loads of fun all around, including the musical about Imelda Marcos. But the highlight for me was the vaudeville version of Chekhov’s THE SEA GULL. Piss in your pants funny yet turned on a dime to become very somber in the last act. And featuring a great group of actors who you’ve probably seen in dozens of TV shows (mostly in the special Chinatown episode)–and finally allowed to show their stuff.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: There are no easy choices in this series. And I’m sorry I don’t see the Angels coming back. So fuck the fucking Yankees.
I’m working on a possible advancement career-wise (took two stabs in the dark, one I’m barely qualified for but would let me move and might be slightly exciting, the other I’m almost overqualified for but would mean staying put, but, well, staying put) so I’m on hold until I see how that all pans out. The Dawg went back on duty (sniff) and is back to getting his brain stuffed full of all kinds of cwap he didn’t think he needed to know. I’m back to randomly catching him when I can. Such is our life now I guess.

@gwangung: Damn it, Janet. It sounds like you had a blast. So green.
@Yutsano: Yeah, the Angels are toast. Feh. You have four cats? PICTURES! I demand pictures of your kittehs! Good luck with the job thing–I hope you get the first one . As for your Dawg, I, um, misread which part of him was getting stuffed.

Any interwebz mechanics here? I have a question:
Wouldn’t it be possible, using AJAX/jQuery, to hide a web page’s source from being viewed?
1) store the ‘real’ page contents in a database.
2) for the $(document).ready function, use an AJAX call to the database. Retrieve the ‘real’ page (everything between the body tags) and append it to the body tag (or use the html method to replace anything that is already there).
I ask this for various reasons, but I think you code monkeys can intuitively understand why it might be good to not allow everybody to see your code using, ‘view source’.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Yeah, the Angels are toast. Feh.
I’d slide towards total indifference if I didn’t despise everything the modern Yankees represent. It compels me to therefore root for their demise.
You have four cats? PICTURES! I demand pictures of your kittehs!
I promise there will be picutres (all four look different, two are on my phone now just gotta get the other two) as soon as I figure out this stupid HTML thingie.
Good luck with the job thing—I hope you get the first one .
Truth be told I could live with either one. The first option suits my sense of adventure more, but both are more dinero (quite a bit more dinero!) and it’d be more of a matter of which one ends up making me more happy.
As for your Dawg, I, um, misread which part of him was getting stuffed.
I have zero responsibility for your dirty mind. Well maybe just a little. ;)

@burnspbesq: Dodger pitching gave up 27 walks in five games, hit at least 3 batters in tonight’s game alone, and had an ERA of 4.52.
We hit three home runs tonight; the Phillies hit four. But they had guys on when they hit a couple of theirs; all ours were solo shots.
All in all, it was embarrassing. Best record in the NL for the season and get swamped like that.
MikeJ
Hidden from who? There’s no way to hide it from someone who really wants to see it. The browser has to read it to render it, and anything a browser can read, a programmer can read.
And no, I don’t understand why letting people see the source is bad. Anything interesting enough to hide should be done on the server side anyway.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: I am with you on the Yanks. I want them to lose so badly.
You put the pics on Flickr, then you link with the little link button. Easy-peasy! And no, I have not posted pics of my boys yet, why do you ask?
More dinero? Ah, yes, that is a good thing. As for my dirty mind, not my fault if you worded the sentence so provocatively.
Oh, and I am giving into the siren song of my bed. See y’all on the flip side. Night, bitchez.
Heh.
r€nato
@MikeJ: When a page with which I am using AJAX is dynamically altered, ‘View Source’ will not show the changes that have taken place since the page was loaded.
Why do I want to hide my source code? Because sometimes I work with people who think they can take my code and use it for their own, cutting me out of the process. I don’t want them doing that. I’m pretty clever with problem-solving and I don’t like people stealing my problem-solving-ideas. It’s what makes me valuable.

@r€nato: I understand updating with ajax, and even so, if you send it to the browser, and at some point you will, I can read it. There ain’t nothin’ you can do to stop it. You can slow down the unsophisticated and lazy, but anything interesting enough to steal isn’t going to be comprehensible in plain text to the unsophisticated and lazy.

If I really want to break into your house, I can find a way to do it. Ever heard of a ‘bump key’? It can easily open the common deadbolt lock, which is in use on the doors of many, many, many, many homes and other structures. I could also simply smash a window, grab as much as I can carry and take off.
Even granted all of that, it doesn’t mean one should leave one’s house unlocked.

We had our cat chipped when he was a kitten because he was constantly losing his safety collar. Collars would disappear within an hour after they were put on the cat. Having him chipped seemed like the right thing to do in that situation. We eventually did find a safety collar that was designed differently so it would stretch a little but not break off.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney got an award Wednesday night, the Center for Security Policy’s “Keeper of the Flame Award.”
heh… i wonder if any of those people ever saw the movie:
Keeper of the Flame (1943) is a dramatic film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.[3][4] Hepburn plays the widow of a famous civic leader who, prior to his death, had secretly planned a coup d’état against the government of the United States.[5][6] Tracy plays a former war correspondent who intends to write a flattering biography of the dead man, only to unearth a plot to cover up his true plans.[

Honestly, that thought has crossed my mind multiple times. But I have my doubts that it was intentional. Just a happy coincidence.
To some extent, I get frustrated that the media don’t focus enough on issues of any importance. However, as we’ve seen recently, when they do try to focus on those things, they still can’t manage to bring any clarity to them and muck it all up anyway. So, I’m just riding the wave at this point. Calling and writing Congress in favor of the public option and letting the rest go. At some point, you just do what you can do and say to hell with the rest.
