can i just say that Jerry Jones is the smarmiest man walking the face of the earth. As a lifelong Giants fan, I have always had a strong dislike for the ‘Boys, yet I could begrudgingly accept the greatness of the Jimmy Johnson teams. But now? Wow, I wanted the stadium to implode. If I hear one more person talking about what a great stadium and speak in wonder of the $1.1B price tag i am gonna scream!
if there is a greater monument to our culture’s decadence, it could only be the BCS.
Heard a diehard Dallas fan say that all the noise and distraction away from the actual, ya know, football game being played, would make it very unlikely that he would ever attend a live game again.
8.
eric
@Crashman06: yes, yes, indeed. I am not sure how I forgot about that….it must have been the shot of a self-satisfied Jones patting himself on the back when the attendance was announced.
I gotta say that it was one of the more rewarding wins in my sports watching career.

I know it’s all about football tonight, BUT…
I have been voting for Bitsy daily and spreading the word to friends, and wonder if some of you would return the favor. I usually keep my pageant life separate from my blogging life, for many reasons, but I really want some votes!
Vote for me in the American Beauties Plus Calendar Girl contest. Only one vote per person (IP address) – so it’s one simple, easy click, here. Choose Kristina and click vote – all done, painless!!! I’m not as worthy as Bitsy, but my contest is short, OK?

Oh, and enjoy your football.

@Brachiator: I went to a Bears game at the atrocity by the lawk a couple years ago and will never go back because of the piped in music/noice between every play.
Same with the NBA.
Last night the noise in Dallas was annoying me through the TV.

A promising House is on with Andre BAuer and Franka Potente as additional cast. But I think I’ll wait for it on Hulu later in week. But have netflix dvd Atonement to watch instead.

Living just north of Atlanta, I’m hoping that other folks in the are will check in. SiubhanDuinne checked in on a lower post and for us the rains and flooding has been a nuisance. Hopefully everyone else in the area has fared as well.

@Anne Laurie: well first, I’m very sorry you’ve had a lousy day. Balloon Juice is one of the best places to come for shoulders to cry on, or like-minded people to bitch at, or just enough distraction to take your mind off whatever made you haz a sad or a mad.
Yes indeed, most certainly I will be watching POTUS on Letterman. Rachel just played a little snippet. Problem is, it’s been such a long time since I last watched his show, I almost can’t remember what channel he’s on, or what time.
Here is a small leftover rant re yesterday’s MTP: david Gregory was on Morning Joke today and said, with a straight face, that he welcomed any opportunity to sit down with Obama and ask him those “tough, hard-hitting questions.”
“Tough and hard-hitting” as in “who do you like in the World Series?”? I was truly flabbergasted (gobsmacked and hornswoggled, too).
Thanks for that. I think both of these incidents are extremely funny in different ways. I wish there were more unintenionally funny incidents like this available with people like Lawrence Olivier, John Gielgud, Alec Guinness, or James Mason.
I love the way Welles becomes increasingly frustrated and contemptuous of the director of the peas commercial.

Huh, Stephen Ross is the Dolphins’ owner (one of them anyway). I wouldn’t know the name except it was big news when he plopped a cool hundred million on the UM Business School when I was attending.

Got word late that I’m subbing for someone on the day shift tomorrow at the part-time gig, so maybe I’ll treat myself to a sit-down breakfast on the way in.
Lemme see if I can get interested in this Colts-Dolphins game . . .

@JK: The story goes that De Niro was messing around on the walkie talkie during the shoot, and Scorsese heard him say that bit (“You talkin’ to me?”), loved it, and added it to the mirror scene.

BTW for the Mad Men fans here, that show last night was a masterpiece. There were at least 20 great lines. My favorite was Roger’s, as always – “I’m being punished for making my job look too easy”. Roger, FTW.
@Steeplejack: Yeah, I don’t have any, either, and I want some. Damn it.

Dear signposts — barely is better than not at all. Glad to see ya.
As a Jets fan, I have mixed emotions about Miami/Colts. Chad is a real stand-up guy, true class. Not a great QB, but a good person. Other than that, I can’t stand Miami. And I love me some Payton. Guess I hope the Colts win, but Chadwick comports himself well, without intercepts or fumbles.
Problem is, it’s been such a long time since I last watched his show, I almost can’t remember what channel he’s on, or what time.
Just in case, Letterman is on CBS at 11:30. And now I’m going to go watch the season premiere of Castle, because ABC doesn’t put it on Hulu and besides, watching Nathan Fillion twinkle is about all my brain can manage tonight. (Dentist appointment tomorrow, and I hate dentistry.)
Sorry, folks but I must rant. I got up at 4:30am to drive to our main campus (a little over 3 hours) for the annual enrollment conference for all admissions, student aid, and registrar personnel here at the university. Pretty much mandatory. I’ve been attending these things for a dozen years, so there usn’t much new to learn. And the actual new stuff I’ve already dealt with as drop/add has come and gone so we’ve already survived the fall registration period and worked the kinks out of any really new stuff like the 9/11 GI Bill implementation. But there were two breakout sessions that I thought would be useful, one today and one tomorrow. Got here and they changed the schedule to both of my sessions at the exact same time today. So I had to do the whole Sophie’s choice thing about which to attend, had none this afternoon, and now none tomorrow. I will have wasted 2 whole fucking days for nothing. I hate this fucking conference. That is all and thank you all for listening.
I’d never heard that story before. That’s pretty cool. I wonder how many strangers approached De Niro walking down the street, following the release of Taxi Driver, and said to him “You Talkin to Me”
Semester registration was always like an extended Chinese Fire Drill. Nobody knew wtf they were doing, but somehow it usually turned out ok. Maybe vicause I just took a bottle of Jack Black along for nerve medicine during and the celebration after.

Cat Lady: You are quite right about last night’s Mad Men. Except the best line, which was also by Roger incidentally, was “And just as he got his foot in the door.”. And, seriously, who ever thought they’d see a scene with buckets of spurting arterial blood on this show?

I’ve never seen The Last Temptation of Christ. Even cinephiles don’t have enough time to see every film on their wish list.
I hope you check out some of the films in the list I provided you last night. From that list, I’d start with Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, The Buddha of Suburbia, The Spanish Prisoner, and The Daytrippers.
A few movies to see from the 1970’s – The Last Detail, The Conversation,Chinatown, and Three Days of the Condor.
My garage and basement flooded. I spent the day moving things and sweeping water out of my house with a push broom. I also had to go outside, get on a ladder,in the pounding freaking rain and put a gutter back on my house. I was scared today,I’ve never seen it rain like this. Lightning hit as close as ten feet away from my front room windows. I had a small creek running right through my house. I totally found a frog swimming in my garage, lol. According to the news it has rained FIFTEEN INCHES SINCE YESTERDAY where I am. I live on a hill, but the ground can’t hold any more water and it’s got nowhere to go. They’re saying on TV it won’t stop entirely til at least Saturday. School’s canceled tommorrow and I’m on night time storm patrol I guess,we’re due for another round of storms in about an hour(which would be 11pm est).
I’m no weenie about storms,in fact I LOVE me some good old rolling thunderstorms. But this is some seriously scary shit. Enough rain already. Everyone please send some good thoughts to GA,alot of people are losing everything and insurance won’t be covering much I’m afraid. Who has flood insurance in a place that’s never flooded before? We sure don’t.

Have you ever heard this Orson Welles radio commercial gone bad?
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry over this audio clip. Welles arguing over a piece of crap hackwork commercial — amazing.
More happily, it immediately brought to mind Dustin Hoffman as an overly-self-critical actor in Tootsie. He can’t even get a job acting in a commercial because he argues about the “logic” of what a tomato might do.
Does anyone know how Tom Delay performed on Dancing with the Christo-Fascists tonight?

While I feel very bad for Orson Welles that he was reduced to doing this radio commercial, I have to confess that I fell on the floor laughing uncontrollably the first time I heard it.
Welles’ colossal genius comes shining through in his breathtakingly brilliant evisceration of the director of the radio commercial.
It was a total tossup about which of Roger’s comments was better, but I chose the one I mentioned because it was so much subtler. I didn’t get it til a beat or two later. And in the art imitating life department, I was working in an office very much like SC’s today at a company owned by Brits, and there was a Brit visiting today. I mean, srsly? So I hear him talking and I am waiting for the riding lawnmower to show up.
That episode is going down as an all time great moment in TV history.
@Betsy: Betsy…are you the same Betsy that spoke of awesome dumplings here on Sept 10th? From some place called P-town mayhaps?

OK, before you start with any of the films I previously recommended to you, here’s my suggestion.
1. The Godfather Part II
2. The Godfather
3. Citizen Kane or Lawrence of Arabia
I know you asked for three, but for the life of me I simply can’t choose between Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia.

Jesus Christ, a toddler was swept from his father’s arms and drowned as heavy rains hit the southeast of the United States.
Unprecedented heavy rains.
Sorta like what happened in Bangladesh about six weeks ago. My husband and I saw a snippet about it on PBS, then went off to shop at Wegman’s.
Turned out that the checkout clerk was a Banladeshi, who’d been trying to get his family up on the cell-phone while simultaneously working his split shift at Wegman’s and checking out our order
He made a few mistakes with the cash register, but my husband and myself instantly forgave him. If we had, instead, complained about it about to Wegman’s management, the poor guy would have been instantly
fired for…
TRYING TO FIND OUT IF HIS FAMILY WAS STILL ALIVE ON COMPANY TIME!
This is for you, Dougl.
Yeah, like you, I love shopping at Wegman’s, but the checkout counter can be a bit of a trial IF you actually TALK to these wage slaves instead of slobbering over all the fresh produce…
Anyway, it’s six weeks later. The same guy is working the checkout counter at Wegman’s.
He does seem calmer than he was.
Does this mean that his family did not drown?
Or maybe they did, and he’s still at his post in their honor?
I’m a straight-shooter with upper management written all over me.
Actually, I work with some fucking lazy people. If one of them notices that several people are going to be absent, they’ll start feeling sick all of a sudden so they don’t have to shoulder their share of the duties. Blah, /end rant. Welles’ colossal genius comes shining through in his breathtakingly brilliant evisceration of the director of the radio commercial.
Welles’ misplaced ego comes shining through. Eviscerating a radio commercial is much like dissecting the “bouquet” arising from a steaming pile of shit.
The effort is admirable, but totally misplaced. Welles, at this point, was freely whoring his talent. What was the point of his debating the best way to do some nasty doggy style?
What’s doubly sad here is that maybe Welles would have been able to write and direct some brilliant commercials since, ironically, a number of film directors began as commercial directors. But Welles did not realize, or accept, the degree to which his talent had been totally de-valued.
It’s really quite sad.

Upon reflection – you don’t melt over youngish Robert Redford? Dude is hot yo.
@Corner Stone: People always say that GF2 is better, but having just watched them both again, have to say I’m still partial to GF1. It felt more character-driven, for some reason.
You make a very compelling argument and your analysis of this incident has a great deal of merit.
I’ve always had great respect and appreciation for anyone with the gift of verbally cutting another person to shreds. I enjoy reading John Simon and Pauline Kael thoroughly demolish a movie, even if it’s a movie I personally liked.
Listening to the conversation between Orson Welles and the radio director gives me the same pleasure as reading a brilliantly scathing review by John Simon or Pauline Kael.
I can’t help thinking what a brilliant movie scene the Welles outburst at the director would have made.
104.
Corner Stone
@slag: Maybe. I’m not stiff on this one. Just enjoyed GF 2 more, so maybe I’m partial.
IMO, if the series stopped with GF 1 no one would really speak too much about it. IMO it sets a landscape that GF 2 adds color and depth to.

@Corner Stone: Al Pacino was great in it and has always had a special place in my heart. Dog Day Afternoon, Looking for Richard, Scarface…great movies!
What I wouldn’t give to be able to relive the indescribable, cosmic euphoria experience I felt the first time I saw The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. After watching these 2 films, I couldn’t even think of seeing another movie for about 3 months. Obviously, I can’t guarantee these movies will have the same effect upon you. All I can do is tell you that I’ve never again experienced the same level of euphoria from any other work of art. Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia aren’t exactly chopped liver. They’re both phenomenal from start to finish, but The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are simply in another universe.

@A Mom Anon: wow, I am so sorry you got flooded. Demo Woman and I were talking about you earlier and hoping you came through the rains okay. @JK: Yeah, well, I’m a bit nervous because I have all these films that people have recommended to me, and I am well known for hating films that most people like. I am especially nervous over The Godfather series as everyone I know likes them. No pressure.
It doesn’t really matter whether or not you end up liking The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. What matters is that you find a movie that you gives you that indescribable euphoria experience.
116.
SiubhanDuinne
@asiangrrlMN: shhh, I’ve never seen any of the GF pictures either /end whisper
@JK: Why? I am not a movie person, so it’s likely I won’t find that movie. Books do that for me, but movies? No. Television? No. My imagination is much better than anything anyone can direct. The visual mediums just don’t do it for me on that level. I can’t think of one movie that made me euphoric upon watching it.
Shrug. If it happens, I will be pleasantly surprised, but I’m not holding my breath.

Got a little choked up seeing the President enter to Pomp & Circumstance and get a standing O on Letterman. Sad when the crowd at Letterman is more respectful than Congress or school districts all over the country.
Agreed. Any art form – movies, music, literature, theatre, etc that gives you a euphoric experience is fine. I love books too. I have to make more time for them.
@JK: After watching I and II again recently, I realized how pleased I was that III mostly had faded from memory. The only thing left is a vague recollection that poor Sofia Coppola once thought she was an actress.

Libertini
@Libertini: Doh! Hail to the Chief, not Pomp & Circumstance, but you get the idea.
Honestly, as many times as I’ve heard him speak about health care, that on Letterman just now was the clearest and most concise argument for chane he’s ever given. He’s good with all kinds of audiences but he is a real natural in this kind of setting. His words are aimed at a lay audience but the message is neither dumbed down on the one hand nor condescending on the other.
So, what are the wingnuts and the self-satisfied “Morning Joe” types going to find to pick apart? Hmmm?
The unbelievably high ticket prices for Broadway plays has prevented me from getting many euphoric experiences in theatre. Fortunately, I have managed to see revivals of Long Day’s Journey into Night, The Iceman Cometh, and Death of A Salesman. Those were incredibly powerful performances. It was great to be in the audience for the thunderous round of cheers and applause those performances received.
Yeah, well, I’m a bit nervous because I have all these films that people have recommended to me, and I am well known for hating films that most people like. I am especially nervous over The Godfather series as everyone I know likes them. No pressure.
The river of good films is both broad and deep. There’s stuff for every taste. If I had to choose between theaters showing a fresh print of Godfather 2 and The Road Warrior, I’d pick The Road Warrior every time (but the original Godfather would be a no-brainer).
@Brachiator: Foreign flicks. Indie flicks. More character-driven movies. In fact, I did a blog entry about it a couple of days ago called, “I’ve God Bette Davis Eyes” in which I list my seven favorite movies. Not the best movies ever, mind you, but the seven movies that really touched me. The Station Agent is one as is Charlotte Sometimes. I don’t dig action movies much, and I hate romantic comedies. In general, I dislike American comedies; I prefer British ones (but not Monty Python).
JK, it’s ok. Not a fave, though. You posted another Joe Jackson song that I really liked, though. Do you remember which one?
Zuzu’s Petals, I am totally jealous of you now. I adore Susan Sarandon, and Geoffrey Rush is such a magnificent actor.
You’re very fortunate to have seen it. I wish I could afford those ticket prices, but they’re out of reach for me now.

That being said, they kind of deserved to lose for that pathetic excuse for a two-minute drill.
Here are some foreign language film recommendations:

@A Mom Anon: Sympathies and empathies. Went through a bad bout of rain here in Wisconsin in June. Electricity went out, so the sump pump went out, then the sewer drains backed up and sewer water came pouring out of our basement toilet for about 10 minutes until my husband put enough weight on the lid to slow it to a trickle. Our basement had 2 1/2 feet of dirty storm/sewage water in it. All of this during a tornado warning. Flooding is a giant pain in the ass and cleaning it up is even a gianter pain in the ass.
Hopeful wishes going out for making it through the night safely with no more mess.

as a pats fan I was torn about who to root for. however peyton did come thru in the last few minutes with a TD to lift my FFL team to victory so I will use that as my take-away for this week.
Godfather Part III was a huge mistake, in my opinion, because the ending of The Godfather Part II was monumental, flawless, and brilliant – the killings of Hyman Roth and Fredo, the suicide of Frank Pentangele, the absolutely stunning flashback scene where Sonny introduces Carlo to Connie and Michael reveals that he’s joined the military, and finally the lingering close-up of Michael seated alone contemplating the events we’ve seen over the course of 2 films.
Godfather Part III’s final scene features Michael falling off a chair and dying. It looks like Artie Johnson falling off a park bench in a Laugh-In sketch.

I LOVE The Woman In the Dunes! The Battle of Algiers, too!
I’ll add some slightly more recent foreign films, admittedly not all considered classics: Kagemusha, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Wings of Desire, Diva, Cinema Pardiso (I prefer the original cut to the director’s cut, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso), and Il Postino.

Don’t. Unless you’ve lived in major cosmopolitain American cities for big chunks of your life, I think that exposure to foreign films is a matter of being lucky enough to know someone who exposes you to them, even today. But now you have no excuses. ; )
I saw Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon in Exit the King this summer. It’s amazing to see such talent so up close and personal.
Dang, that’s a duo worth paying to see live! I’ve always been too poor/lazy to really take as much advantage as I should have of live theatre, tragically. My all-time best, to date, was seeing Cherry Jones in Major Barbara at a 200-person Boston-area theatre back around 1990… and my all-time regret is not trying harder to get to NYC and see her in Doubt five years later.
@asiangrrlMN: Le chateau de ma mere and La gloire de mon pere are cute films.
As for documentaries, I enjoyed The Hobart Shakespeareans recently. More for the inspiring subject matter than the film making, but if you like drama, you might like this movie. Quite heartening.
Documentary film recommendations – these are the ones that immediately come to mind
The Stone Reader – If you love reading novels, this film is for you. Director Mark Moscowitz seeks to track down an author whose first novel, The Stones of Summer, received a glowing review in the NY Times. Moscowitz wants to know what became of author Dow Mossman who showed great promise with his first novel.
Visions of Light – Documentary on the history of cinematography. The opening and closing theme music is The Aquarium by Camille Saint Saens which I believe you said you liked when I posted it.
A Decade Under the Influence – Documentary on the films of the late 1960’s and the 1970’s
Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media – documentary on Chomsky
Fog of War – documentary about Robert McNamara
The Corporation The documentary is critical of the modern-day corporation
Berkeley in the Sixties – Title says it all
Arguing the World – traces the political evolution of Irving Kristol and 3 of his classmates from City College of NY
SlamNation – documentary which follows the National Poetry Slam in Portland, Oregon.
Spellbound – documentary about the National Spelling Bee
Sonic Outlaws – documentary on jam/cut up/found art, specifically that of the audio visual sort. Beginning with the story of Negativeland’s infamous record U2
Absolutely yes to Wings of Desire and Diva for foreign language film recommendations. I meant to include them in my previous post but forgot to do so. I haven’t seen the other films mentioned in your post.
One more outstanding documentary that I meant to include on my list of documentary film recommendations
A GRIN WITHOUT A CAT is Chris Marker’s epic film-essay on the worldwide political wars of the 60’s and 70’s: Vietnam, Bolivia, May ’68, Prague, Chile, and the fate of the New Left.
I think Diva could be remade relatively easily in the States- it’s a fairly conventional thriller, but with a cast of eclectic characters that isn’t necessarily French. The right director- for some reason I’m thinking Soderbergh- might be able to balance out the action and the characters.
BTW, a few silent films are in my head and need to get out: City Lights, La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, Wings, Battleship Potemkin and Able Gance’s Napoléon– though it’s best to see that final one in a theater with a wide screen.
I think Diva is conventional enough that it could be remade here. I think someone like Soderbergh might be able to handle the mix of action and eclectic characters.
And no one asked, but some worthy silent films: City Lights, Wings, Nosferatu, Battleship Potemkin, La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc and Able Gance’s Napoléon– though the final selection is best viewed in a theater with a very wide screen.
Don’t tell me you have forgotten one of the former Balloon Juice ad server’s greatest hits–the chihuahua with the barbecue fork stuck in its head?! Why, that was even bigger than Pamela Anderson’s mystery appendage.
I keep telling Laura W she needs to do a full-on BBQ-fork ad to push Bitsy over the top. “Your votes will help this poor dog have this implement removed from its head . . .” Gold, pure gold, I tell you.
Cough. Ahem. Well, I’m off to bed. I stayed up way too late installing Office 2007 on my computer and then wrangling with the configuration and options for Word and Outlook. I knew there were a lot of changes and “improvements,” but jeezy-creezy. I’ve sort of got Word whipped into shape–decided to declare victory and quit for the night when I successfully banished “the ribbon”–and I was able to download the last six months’ e-mail from Gmail, but I still have a lot of organizing and pruning to do. Good times.
And somehow Outlook euchered me into downloading and installing this Windows Desktop Search utility, which has attached itself like a limpet to my taskbar and has resisted all efforts to dislodge it. I thought it was a utility just for inside Outlook! Anybody know how to get it off the Windows taskbar? It seems to be useful and/or necessary to do quick searching in Outlook, but I don’t need it for anything beyond/outside that.
I’ve always had great respect and appreciation for anyone with the gift of verbally cutting another person to shreds.
Ah. I had a professor who loved to do this to grad students. Turned me off. It was dazzling, but a kind of intellectual bullying. It was easy for him, and his victims rarely had the verbal resources to fight back.
But in the case of Welles, is he really cutting, since the commercial director either doesn’t care or doesn’t understand?
I enjoy reading John Simon and Pauline Kael thoroughly demolish a movie, even if it’s a movie I personally liked.
Yep. I recall some of Simon at his scathing best. Kael could be dismissive as well, but she was Simon’s superior in every way because she loved movies and wrote more, and more passionately, about what she loved than about what she thought was crap.
I always got the impression that Simon thought that movies were inferior to theater. And at his worst, Simon had a nasty habit of including a jab at an actresses’ supposed physical flaw in his reviews, which was both odd and repellent.
But I think it is easier to write a negative review, especially of a bad film. Rex Reed made an entire career doing this. But it is harder to write well about a good or great film, because you have to do justice to it. An example of this, I think, is Roger Ebert’s review of the film Ghost World.
I wanted to hug this movie. It takes such a risky journey and never steps wrong. It creates specific, original, believable, lovable characters, and meanders with them through their inconsolable days, never losing its sense of humor. The Buscemi role is one he’s been pointing toward during his entire career; it’s like the flip side of his alcoholic barfly in “Trees Lounge,” who also becomes entangled with a younger girl, not so fortunately.
Just about to go to bed, and I saw your message. I think the Chambers Brothers do a version of “People Get Ready.” Was that the one you were thinking of the other night? And I think it was written by and originally recorded by Curtis Mayfield. So there’s probably a version around by him with the Impressions.

@GregB: Have watched the part up to Delay’s first dance. He sucked (as expected) and scored toward the bottom of the pack, but not at rock bottom. He did a chachacha to Wild thing – seriously. Ironic? I’m still not sure.
I am grateful to whomever chose his wardrobe – it was a terrible fit in every way – style, color & fit. Muddy brown – possibly his worst color. Made him look very old & ugly. Perhaps the costume designer is a liberal. ; )
He’s not going to go far on this show, but probably won’t get voted off first (which is too bad.)

Also too, Delay lost his Relay. Came in 4th of 4 in the head-to-head competition.
Today was a mixed bag. I produced the sample for the fertility testing but was absolutely heartbroken when my wife told me that the results “didn’t matter” because it had no effect on where we are now.
That test represented some actual, tangible hope for the future. It was something that I could work on that was outside of my head, and it represented a broken promise that I was trying to fulfill.
And she said that it had no bearing on things as it stands.
Yes, Chambers Brothers is it. I had thought of them as the likely group, but didn’t get the song the other night as was looking for the word train in the title, and not the lyrics.

Worst two minute offense I have ever seen in my entire life. Did the Dolphins think a football game was 5 quarters?
Godamighty!
The Colts offense has the ball less than 15 minutes in the entire game and still walk off with the win.
The only thing that made it worth watching was knowing that Bill Parcels got to sit in his luxury box and watch his team walk off 0-2
@General Winfield Stuck: I fucking love this song, but wow, it’s funny what the memory does to you, isn’t it?
@Jay in Oregon: Good to see you posting. I’m sorry that your wife is not at the same point you are. It hurts when you finally start emerging from the depths to realize that a loved one may not be on the same page. I’m going to sound like a broken record. You can’t change her–you can only change yourself. Keep working on you. And keep posting.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys and gals. I appreciate them very much.
After I wrote this, we talked and I made her understand how much her comment hurt me. She apologized.
This was a rough weekend; things will get better. I’ll get my answer sometime today or tomorrow.
An acquaintance of mine just disclosed to me that she is going through something very similar (although in their case, she has actually moved into her own apartment). Basically, she is me and her husband is my wife.
We’ve had some good conversation and she is helping me come to terms with some things. And she told me yesterday that it seems to be helping things with them, too; they had a good talk for the first time in several weeks.

@Steeplejack: Not that you’ll ever read this, but Rod Steward does a damn good cover of “People Get Ready”, also.

Ah Geez Louise! Just checked the wikipete and the list of covers is endless. Just click in the song title.
I usually come back and read the threads, especially if I had a word in. Glad to see that Stuck got the song he wanted, and thanks for the recommendation on Rod Stewart. As you noted, “People Get Ready” has been covered by about a billion acts.
Personally, my favorite song by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions is “It’s All Right.” Not to be confused with J.J. Jackson’s “But It’s Alright,” also a great song. (It starts at 2:25 in this clip, which was the only one I could find.)
@2th&nayle: With Jeff Beck! Love that version. (Thanks for the link back, Steeplejack).
194.
2th&nayle
@Steeplejack: Speaking of covers of that song; my first exposure to “People Get Ready” was when I was a kid (’bout 16) in Arkansas, working a summer job getting the local fair grounds ready for the annual county fair. As fate would have it, there were 3 black youngsters on the work crew and we would take breaks and eat lunch together. It became part of the lunchtime ritual for these guys to do some musical vocalizations of one kind or another, and these guy were good! “People Get Ready” was one of their favorites and consequently became one of mine as well. I mistakenly thought the song was a old traditional negro spiritual (which it can be said to be; just not that “old”). It wasn’t until years later when I heard ‘The Impressions’ version, that I discovered the true origins of the song. As ‘musical time-stamps’ go, my mind goes back to that hot summer in Arkansas every time I hear that song.

can i just say that Jerry Jones is the smarmiest man walking the face of the earth.

All I can do is tell you that I’ve never again experienced the same level of euphoria from any other work of art. Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia aren’t exactly chopped liver.

Cough.

That was a shock. Chadwick was always good at clock management — don’t know what happened last night.

@asiangrrlMN:
I’m coming to understand that.

Actually that’s just some of Hermm’s training that Biff retained. No one did a 4th qtr gag like a Hermm led outfit. Wish he was still with us here in the AFC East.

@Corner Stone:
Seeing this late…
I am from Galveston, and I am the same Betsy talking about P-town dumplings. :) Unfortunately, I haven’t lived in g-town since graduating from high school back in 1998. I still have friends there though – I’ll ask around. :)

@Steeplejack: Not that you’ll ever read this, but Rod Steward does a damn good cover of “People Get Ready”, also.

Ah Geez Louise! Just checked the wikipete and the list of covers is endless. Just click in the song title.

@2th&nayle:
