"Teabagging… going nuts… whipped out… toothless…. full-throated… tongue-lashing… lick spending…You’re gonna need a Dick Armey."
Good gawd that was some funny shit. I still can’t figure out what they’re gonna do with Shuster now that they’ve given his time slot over to Ed Schultz, but the guy is good, and I hope he’s back with his own show soon.
JC
This clip is so full of win.

And for those who do not wish to participate in the tea-bagging itself, organizers will be offering free chili-dogs and other hot lunches as well as rides aboard a glass-bottom boat.

He forgot to mention Michelle Malkin. I’ve had guilt ridden fantasies of tea bagging with Michelle.

"For most Americans, Wednesday April 15th will be Tax Day. But in our fourth story tonight it’s going to be teabagging day for the right wing and they are going nuts for it. Thousands of them whipped out the festivities early this past weekend and while the parties are officially toothless, the teabaggers are full-throated about their goals; they want to give President Obama a strong tongue-lashing and lick government spending; spending they did not oppose when they were under Presidents Bush and Reagan."
Christ, I need a cigarette. That was almost as good as sex.

Shuster is good and he is underrated. He has his own show, it’s just not in prime time. Between Rick Sanchez on CNN and David Shuster on MSNBC, we should continue to have some good laughs at Fox News and their shenanigans. Shuster used to be at Fox so he has a great perspective on them.
SpotWeld
How will we know we have reached peak wingnut,
When this stuff stops being funny.
D-Chance.
Question: If Fox News is being "unprofessional" and "unjournalistic" in its hyping of the tax protests, then isn’t MSNBC being equally unprofessional and unjournalistic with its wall-to-wall slamming of the upcoming events?
Looks like two sides of the same coin, to me. The outrage and foot-stomping (especially from a blogger already mad because she’s not getting any action… tea-bagging or otherwise) seems to be one-sided… maybe CNN has it right by just ignoring the whole thing altogether until AFTER the events have occurred and then determining whether it is newsworthy or not.
r€nato
Except, you know, it was funny.

Holy crap.
That’s a good deal funnier than anything I’ve seen on SNL in a long time.

Dammit, I must have missed that part of Countdown last night.
That must explain why the rest of the show sucked so badly – because all of teh funny got crammed into this teabagging bit.

eyepaddle
Did everybody else catch the bit where SHuster was interviewing Lawrence O’Donnel?
The quip/question about a system where representatives are elected and then they decide on tax matters being exactly what the Boston Tea Party was after–and then he finished by asking O’Donnel "Is there any chance we could have a system like that by Wednesday?"
I had tears in my eyes last night. That pretty much trumped any other wise-ass take on the news anywhere, he might have even surpassed Stewart/Colbert with the Teabagging stuff.
Lesley
I heart MSNBC for that.
gbear
The only problem I have with Shuster is that when he has a guest known to use parody or humor as part of their delivery, he giggles like a chipmunk all through the intereview no matter what the guest is saying. He needs to filter that giggle.

So, evidently the sum total of the critical response to a bunch of clowns who have no understanding of history, but are invoking history to justify their partisan agenda is to chortle:
heh, hehe, heh … They said teabag
Over, and over and over again. And an amazing number of folks seem to thing that this gets funnier with each repetition.
We are doomed.

Well, yes.
MSNBC is engaging in knowing parody. Fox News is engaging in unwitting self-parody. Both are entertaining, but with different ends in mind.

They are simply moving his show to an earlier time in the day.
Dusty
It’s just a side benefit. But what’s the option here? You can’t have a reasoned debate on the issues with people whose political demands are incoherent. What is it these people want? No taxes? That’s not gonna happen unless you want to dismantle the entire government; that shit’s gotta get paid for somehow. Lower taxes? Obama just passed the largest middle-class tax cut in American history. Lower taxes on rich people? Not exactly a stirring call to populist arms.
Zifnab
@D-Chance.:
It’s not the hype that’s the issue so much as the complete avoidance of facts. MSNBC, for instance, was successfully able to overview the events of the Boston Tea Party. By contrast, FOX referenced a news clip of theirs that didn’t exist.
It’s kinda like comparing apples to shit sandwhiches and bemoaning the fact that they’re both food so you have no room to talk.
John S.
Ah, another victim of false equivalence…
Would you expect MSNBC to cover an upcoming rally to, say, protest the Holocaust (because it never happened), without ridicule?
Journalism is supposed to present the audience with facts and a frame of reference. The fact is, these "tea parties" are a farce and that is exactly how the reporting should be framed.
eyepaddle
Hey Joe, way to switch on the pompous–track down the rest of the Shuster O’Donnel interview. there was a lot of context there.
Plus, I don’t think there is anything amiss with ridiculing the ridiculous. A side benefit when the right wing demonstrates that they are this clueless about the obvious stuff might be: how do you think this will shape the opinons of younger Americans–a demographic that the right wing is brutally losing already?

May I just point out that this whole thing is starting to give authentic testicle-play a bad name? A beautiful thing that loving partners do in the privacy of their own homes is now mentally associated with Newt Gingrich. Think about that.

@joes527:
Evidentally, you missed the multitude of posts here and elsewhere discussing the "temper tantrum" aspect of the tea parties as well as those discussing the current astroturf nature of the "movement" as well as the usurpation of the tea parties by GOP movementarians (see Sully for reference). The tea-bagging aspect is gilding the lily, so to speak, as it’s a term those having the parties began by their lack of knowledge of modern slang.

I dunno … Since the GOP is going all "costume drama" on our ass, maybe a review of the context of the original Tea Party, along with a recap of the Whiskey Rebellion might be in order.
Or if we don’t want to re-fight the revolution, we could look at the proposed effective tax rates, compared with rates in the last 25 years.
Or if we don’t want to do anything like that we could just SHUT THE FUCK UP about the tea parties and let them look stupid w/o comment.
I’m not saying that the tea parties are anything other than pure stupidity on toast.
What I’m saying is that all this giggling on the progressive side over the same joke repeated day after day makes the progressive side look like a bunch of MORANS.

In the words of Larry the cable guy, "Thats funny I don’t care who you are"
Some people need to take both hands, pull hard and remove that big ass stick from their ass. First of all CNN has in fact covered the issue as well, just not in as amusing a fashion. Secondly both Rachel Maddow and David Shuster have discussed how ridiculous it is for the Tea Baggers to be protesting an increase of 3 percent only on the top 5% of Americans. But what it comes down to is that at this point most of the Tea Baggers don’t even know what they are protesting. Some think its gay marriage. Others think its the deficit. Still others think its abortion. None of which have anything to do with the original Boston Tea Party
I will be damned if anybody tells me I can’t laugh at the idiots participating in this lunacy. What some may not understand is that there might be those out there who believe that these Tea Bagging parties are legit and don’t realize that everybody is laughing at them. After seeing that clip they might just think twice about being a part of that bullshit. If we can’t laugh at THIS what in the hell can we laugh at?

How did Long Dong Schuster get all that past the censors? Did NBC Universal by the Playboy Channel and merge it with MSNBC without telling anyone? Does MSNBC now stand for "Most Salacious National Broadcast Company"? And have Stewart and Colbert gotten a hold of that yet?

Oh for fuck’s sake, grow a sense of humor already.
Probably more than half the country knows what teabagging is, in the slang sense. The ones who don’t are too young, too old, or too conservative. The latter group had the bright idea of giving their flagship anti-government campaign a name so prima facie ridiculous, it’s still an open question whether or not the organizers are trolling their own party. It’s like if some animal rights group decided to mount an anti-fur-wearing campaign by encouraging everyone to go "bareback" and calling themselves "barebackers".
We could get serious, and make like the history teacher everyone hated in high school by lecturing the country on the history of the Boston What a Waste of Perfectly Good Tea Party. That’ll sure win votes.
We could get serious, and start talking about effective tax rates. There are millions of Americans suffering from insomnia who will thank you.
We could shut the fuck up, and let them look like idiots on their lonesome, banking on the fact that more than half the country is already snickering at them.
Or we could toss them an anvil by laughing with the rest of America at these clowns, and in the process unearth enough low-hanging comedy gold to choke Traci Lords. This will offend… well, the people who are too stuck up to enjoy Revenge of the Nerds or Kevin Smith. This is roughly the same demographic that voted for Alan Keyes, with a slight overlap of equally stuck up liberals, and you’ll pardon me in advance if my sun does not rise and set by their clock.
Strangely, a progressive movement made up of roughly fifty bajillion people seems to be capable of doing all these things at once!

What you miss, joes527, is that the utter tone-deafness of the right wing (particularly the corporate-sponsored, FNC-covered, "grassroots protest" right-wing) in using "tea bag" as a verb and gerund form in referring to their protests is itself newsworthy. The constant mockery of the association of the term is reporting on how this so-called "movement" is so collectively clueless as to fail at avoiding such ridiculous associations.
Beyond that, Shuster managed to score additional news points by enumerating the connections between the Teabaggers and their copious corporate and political sponsorship. While much of the beginning of the segment was balls-on-forehead level snark, there is actual news content, showing how the ludicrously named series of protests is about the farthest thing from "populist" and "grassroots" as you can get.

@Catsy:
Wait a second, what are you talking about? Votes?
The election was six months ago, and the good guys won. The midterm elections aren’t for 18 months, and in the Senate at least, the Republicans are defending more seats than the Democrats. Call it the downside of their wins in 2004. By 2012, outcomes in both the White House and Congress will depend more than anything else on the economy. (In 2012, the Democrats will also suffer from the same problem in the Senate that the Republicans will face in 2010, because 2006 was good for the left.)
Or did you mean votes in Congress? Heh, yeah, that’s true, the more seriously we take right-wing nuts, the more Republicans and Blue Dogs will reject them. Wait, what?
In none of these situations does the tone of commentary in early 2009 matter. Therefore the reverse is true: when thinking about the tea parties, votes don’t matter. If we manage to point out how crazy these people are and how closely they’re tied to the Republican Party, it’s a nice side benefit, but we’re all just enjoying ourselves here.

If a guy walks out of his house every morning, and treads on a rake which then whacks him in the nuts – every single morning – it doesn’t make you look stupid to laugh at it every single morning. It makes him look stupid for getting hit in the love spuds every damn morning. It’s a real-life running gag.
The fact it has gone on so long, with so many people buying in, without these people realizing how stupid it looks, makes it funnier. If someone runs in 2012 under the slogan "Let’s teabag America!" I may well die laughing, as may many Americans.

See, it’s all about the fact that these idiots can’t buy into a black man being president. Show me another reason and I’ll accept it.
C’mon…3% increase in the top 1%’s taxes. Yep, that’s a good reason to take a day off and protest. Hate to break it to the maroons on the right but when Reagan left office the top 1% PAID MORE IN TAXES than they did in 1980.
Fucking fools.

@The Populist:
Typical smarmy liberal. Calls everyone names (cowards, bigots, dumbasses, f-ing fools) who’s the ignorant bigot here? You. Because its been stated many posts back that the Teabag parties were against anyone in any party that is responsible for increased debt and taxes, Republicans who voted for Bush and even name calling clueless liberals like you who voted for Obama, were there. And the wise ones here know that any govt; entity that can be used on one group, can be used on all.
Including a useless piece of shit like you…
( Speaking on your lower level of course…my apologies to those with class)

No. You have mistaken a pithy but throwaway one-liner for the actual argument.
You have also mistaken me for someone who disagrees with you. I think you want the other guy.
