For those of you who have long whinged and moaned and complained about the kitty hegemony of this website, you are about to be inundated with pictures of teh cute in puppy form. Those of you who are uninterested in pictures of adorable Jack Russell terrier puppies are just going to have to bear with us for a while. Or you could move to China, you America hating godless communists. As has been noted before, you are either with us, or with the terriers.
Word on the street is that Guesly (pronounced Goozly), the male with black coloring, is very bold and just wants to be pet and touched and cuddled. Ginny, the brown one, is a little shy, but reliable sources have told me that she is actually the ornery one. Apparently she runs around and investigates, finds things to get into, Guesly then joins her, she loses interest, and Guesly is left holding the ball. From my own personal experiences with women and in particular with sisters, this story resonates.
Also, we had our first accident this morning, and on an Oriental rug. One last thing- several of you seem to be under the impression that I have seen the dogs. I have not. While the strongly held belief is that most bloggers are in fact writing from their parent’s basement wearing pajamas, I have not lived at home since I was 17 (and considering what an insufferable bastard I was as a teenager, that was a good thing). My parents are just gushing, and are already madly in love with their new pups.
At any rate, more pics later on today, I am assured, so you ill get another fix this afternoon.
*** Update #2 ***
Hot off the presses:
Jimbo
Always worry about the quiet ones, Ginny looks like 8′ of trouble in a 4" frame… They’re both cute as blazes, congrats (and good luck) to your folks.
lilly Von Schtupp
They are so stinkin cute! And I am so glad they are not mine (puppy learning curves-oy).
I for one am looking forward to the pictures and stories. Make sure you throw in a few of Tunch every now and then. Wouldn’t want him to feel left out.
Robin G.
My computer just melted from the cute.
Bobzim
That reminds me: I heard that the Obamas are going to get their daughters an unrepentant terrier.
robertdsc
Tunch will roll over them both and laugh while doing it.
Face
I hope you realize that your parents will be mad distracted, so instead of being John, from now on on every call you’ll be sistersname-othersister-wrongbrother-ImeanJohn. Your parents will no longer travel to see you; you’ll be traveling to see "their family". Any cute 4th grade math problem or crayon drawing of your 6th grade sweetheart left in an unlocked drawer is about to become mulch. Your parents will be buying Resolve and Rug Doctor Shampoo in Costco-esque sizes.
Fun!
Karen
Given what I know about terriers & having experienced German Shepherd puppyhood, your parents are stronger people than my husband & I are. (At least the G.S. calmed down some when she hit 3 or so.) They are pretty little things though. I hope they have a big yard for the babies to romp in. Good luck to your parents!
Punchy
Cole’s gotta find the wide-angle lens first.
John Cole
Mom has done this for twenty years already. Whenever someone does something that requires a reprimand, she cycles through a ‘JG-Devon-Seth-Annie-Eric-Ajax’ before she gets the right name.
BTW- my family called me JG because my father’s name was also John. Eric is my mother’s brother, while Ajax was the first family dog and the other three are siblings. I was such a brat growing up that I am permanently the first name yelled.
kommrade reproductive vigor
Well, John’s been fully assimilated. I wonder how Tunch will react when he comes home late at night, covered in dog hair.
Michael D.
@Punchy:
Win!
Bobzim
That reminds me of this.
The Grand Panjandrum
Damn. You didn’t deny cheetos stains. Oh, and not living in their basement isn’t denying that you still live at home. (j/k)
Those are some cute little beasts. How could your folks not fall in love with them.
Krista
But you DO blog in your pajamas, right Junior?
The pups are just too freaking cute. I want to deliver the tiniest of soft kronches on their velvety little ears.
John Cole
Steelers jersey and a wetsuit.
No dildos.
Krista
Not anymore, anyway…..
South of I-10
Those puppies melt my brain. They are so cute.
My off topic: it is snowing here! Accumulating snow? South of I-10? Hasn’t happened in at least 10 or 15 years. We have about an inch of snow on the ground. On a related note, pretty much every interstate in Louisiana is shut down at this time.
Comrade Stuck
Ginny looks unimpressed with the whole corrupt Senate sale imbroglio. That look clearly says "Damn You Blago" , " NowWhere’s my playtoy, silly humans".
peach flavored shampoo
Damn. Here I thought your mom had either given birth to a Greek warrior, or just decided to name the runt of the family something so cool that s/he’d get all the pub at Senior Prom.
Or s/he was concieved while washing the floor.
John Cole
@peach flavored shampoo: I am the one who named him Ajax- he was a mutt and I got him two weeks before Xmas when I was six.
The best Cole pet name is still our cat, who lived for 19 years and who was the greatest cat to EVER live. My sister named him “Mr. Purr Puff.”
Try yelling “Purr Puff” off the porch and try not to feel silly.
Dork
May I ask (what’s surely been asked before, but I aint got time to look)? How did they come up with Guesly? Is that another language? Becuase I really think if they had just gone "Gin" and "Juice", that’d been the shizzle my bizzle.
jnfr
You can tell by the glint in her eyes that Ginny is nothing but trouble. Adorable trouble, but trouble nonetheless.
South of I-10
@John Cole: I got my first cat when I was 4, and named him Cat. He was full grown when he wandered up and died when I was 19. Cat seemed like a perfectly good name at 4. He was quite ornery and looked exactly like Morris of the old 9 Lives commercials fame.
kid bitzer
the ‘unrepentant terrier’ line is good.
we had a westie once–didn’t take us long to start referring to it as the terrorist.
hey, are the heads on those jack russels unusually large for their bodies?
i’m thinking this is a puppy thing–little retrievers have *huge* paws, and maybe with j/r’s the head grows before the body?
Krista
Funny that you named your dog Ajax…the only other canine Ajax of which I’ve heard is the Australian dog from the kids’ book. Is that where you came up with the name?
Fwiffo
What’s with the blatant mammal bias on this site? No fish, lizards, snakes or even birds, let alone invertebrates. I know you have some to choose from because I sent you tarantula pictures.
Mr Furious
I heard that the Obamas are going to get their daughters an unrepentant terrier.
Bobzim FTW! Hilarious.
That Ginny is so damn cute I can’t stand it. That’s only gonna help her in constantly framing Guesly for her crimes.
Mr Furious
Try yelling “Purr Puff” off the porch and try not to feel silly.
I feel your pain. I was the oldest with three sisters, and now I have two little girls. I stopped caring about that kind of stuff years ago.
Just today I took a pink lunchbag to work.
tinat
Oh man, I forgot how adorable they are when they are so tiny.
My experince with Jacks…the females are sneaky smart, the males will just do whatever they want right in front of you, no need to sneak.
Good luck to your parents, it’s going to be fun, really
John Cole
I hate spiders and bugs and snakes and scorpions and crap like that. I spent ten years sleeping with them in the army, no more, thank you.
The Other Steve
That’s the hardest part. Having to take the puppies outside every 3-4 hours. ARGH!
It was good at the time that I worked close to home, as I had to come home for lunch.
The Other Steve
According to The Google… apparently Guesly is the name of a player for the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Guesly Dervil
Laura W
@Punchy: Thanks. I need a few more entries for my 12 Days of Tunchness Treatise. (Previous working title: Top 10 Funniest Fat Cat Jokes at Tunch’s Expense.)
I kid the Tunchster! He’s beyond-adorable.
John Cole
@The Other Steve: That is it. She has loved his name since she first saw it, and said she would name her next dog Guesly.
Which I guess considering my cat’s name, this makes sense.
John Cole
BTW- When I finally break down and get a Jack Russell terrier, I am naming it John Henry if it is a male.
Laura W
@John Cole: Do you need some help?
(You made the opening. I am still keeping my promise. Sort of.)
dr.hypercube
Send the ‘rents over to the Terrierman’s blog for some hard core (I mean it) earthdog action.
Woodrowfan
We have a 15-16 y.o. rat terrier, which is basically a slightly larger JR that’s a bit less hyper. He’s my little buddy and a great dog!
On the JR theme, here’s Arlo & Janis on Jack’s..

blurm,
Shouldn’t this be titled a "Pupdate" ???
Carnacki
Our kitten keeps curling up with my 100 pound German shepherd/lab mix. The cute factor is too much for human consumption.
Tim Fuller
My mixed Jack Russell Bandit favors Ginny. He also does the weird curl around sleepy thing like in the last two pics.
Enjoy.
ninerdave
@Carnacki:
Picts or it didn’t happen.
ninerdave
What i want to know is how your parents got the puppies to sit still, let alone sleep. From what I remember about my friend’s JR pup, it was like a kid hopped up on sugar followed by a bump of meth.
Damned at Random
Someone should warn the frats that there are TWO Russell Coles in their future.
Carnacki
ninerdave I’ll try to get one.
Mr. Mises
Once upon a time, when we moved to exurbia, the first thing my JR did was set out to hunt mountain beavers. At dusk, it was time to bring in the pets. JR was inside a tunnel he was digging. All I could see with the flashlight was a wagging tail, which I foolishly grabbed, and nearly got bit by the growling crazily focused little dog. I said: “Fine. You’re outside for the night, ya little asshole.” The next morning Mrs. Mises found the little asshole exhausted, covered in mud, asleep on the porch, after an apparently fruitless nights work. Such is the life of a JR.
Tsulagi
Excellent Xmas present your parents gave to themselves. Love dogs. Cats not so much. I think the bastards sense that and always seem to walk around my feet or jump in my lap in other peeps homes just to annoy me.
@Punchy: good one.
ThresherK
@The Other Steve:
Guesly (pronounced Goozly) sounds like a pet name the late, great Chas. Addams would create.
dog's eye view
re the mistake on the Oriental rug:
You know, I heard GWBush did that the first week they got him into the White House too.
Your puppies will likely a shorter learning curve.
They’re smarter looking, too.
jake 4 that 1
@John Cole: Talk about a coyote date.
Carrie
Oh NOes!
Someone put the puppies in puppy jail!
ET
Obviously all that trouble that those faces indicate they can get into has worn them out on the second batch of photos.
the ills
We got to play with them last night! They are so freakin’ adorable, (yes, they’re otters holding hands cute). I was about to take Ginny home with me but didn’t want Guesly to cry. I was honored when I found out we were their first visitors (although I didn’t arrive with a puppy gift and I did feel bad that you and Seth weren’t there yet). Guesly is so sweet and friendly, and yes, Ginny is a little timid and shy at first but she’s tougher than she seems. She was growling at her chew toy and getting all rough with it after she warmed up to us a bit. They have little puppy sized tennis balls and like dear Russell-they love them.
JG, you are going to melt when you meet them!
LanceThruster
I love the new-to-the-world, who-the-hell-are-you look in the puppies’ eyes as they begin to determine just who is worthy of their trust, love, and affection, as well as who is good for a free meal and will help relieve their boredom whenever it sets in.
I think your folks have been found to be tailor-made for the job.
T. Scheisskopf
Speaking of small working dogs:
My good friend and his wife are complete and utter saps for Dachshunds. Adopted Dachunds. All 4 of them. One of his dogs decided there was a Wolverine buried somewhere in their very fine leather sectional, while the parents were out. Being a good Dachshund and knowing his place in the eternal scheme of things, he damned well knew now was his time to rise to the occasion and get that damned Woverine in the only way he knew how:
He dug a hole. Right through the fine leather sectional, all the way to the floor.
He didn’t get that Wolverine, but sure did scare him out of the house and he has never returned. He was very proud of himself when mom and dad returned, for he is a good little Dachsund and he did what needed doing.
Duncan Watson
I am very glad to see these cute puppies. I have a jack russell and a rat terrier myself. Wonderful dogs.
