I read this yesterday, but forgot to comment about it until I saw a reminder in the comments:
The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska. The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.
Not that this should be a problem in the future. Both Sununu and Bradley lost, and with the defeat of Chris Shays, I believe you can count the number of Republicans from New England in the House or Senate using one finger- Susan Collins from Maine.
*** Update ***
Oops. Forgot Olympia Snowe. Every time I think of her, I think of the movie Moonstruck, for obvious reasons. Forgot Gregg, too. So three Senators, no Representatives. Impressive.
4tehlulz
Olympia Snowe disagrees with your count. She’s probably doomed next election, though.
kommrade jakevich
Keep in mind this woman thinks a VP’s duties include telling the Senate what to do. Clearly the phrase "We dodged a bullet," is not sufficient. We dodged a fucking SSM.
May I suggest another tag? Something along the lines of "Most vetted candidate ever!" You’ll get lots of use from it when the GOP rolls out its 2010 line of numbnuts.
And WTF happened in NE? That was the last bastion of non-apeshit Repubs. Seems a shame they got swept out in the Great Electoral High Colonic of ’08.
Objective Scrutator
God will probably take His wrath out of California, and instead save the meteors and earthquakes for New England. After all, God won’t have to worry about friendly fire when He smites the godless New Englanders. As the elections have shown, that place is full of wanton depravities.
r€nato
let’s hear it for that GOP big tent!
I’m with Bill Maher. Yeah we won and so we should just let it go… but every time I hear a story like this, I get pissed all over again that the GOP tried to foist this wingnut upon us.
If you thought Bush was divisive, he would have seemed like MUP compared to a VP or POTUS Palin.
Don McArthur
"…I believe you can count the number of Republicans from New England in the House or Senate using one finger…"
Which finger?
Andrew
Dear god, please let Palin run for the presidency in 2012.
We have the potential for a wingnut all-star team in the Republican primary: Palin, Gingrich, Huckabee…
mad the swine
I swear to God, this is why Palin will be the standard-bearer for the GOP in 2012. She exemplifies talk-radio conservatism – its obsession with ideological purity, its anti-intellectual contempt for "elitist" experts like scientists and PhDs, its insistence that only Christian social conservatism is genuine conservatism, its belief that respectful treatment of political enemies is cowardly and weak and that real conservatives have the moral strength to call liberals traitors and socialists and anti-American – I’d be willing to bet, in fact, that Palin’s entire worldview has been shaped by listening to Rush Limbaugh every day for the past fifteen or twenty years. What she knows about Washington, DC, or about Iraq, or about Obama himself, she learned from talk radio.
It’s the closest the GOP can get to running Rush himself for president.
spork_incident
Perhaps Snowe and Collins will form the new conservative, rather than nutcase, Republican Party.
Perhaps penguins will waddle through my front yard.

Judd Gregg also disagrees. Although considering that either Hodes or Lynch would wipe the floor with him in 2010, he’s probably happy to be overlooked.

Why should one make concessions when god understands and agrees with your every thought and action. Given the way that she’s backstabbed all of her mentors in AK, she must truely think of every mere human as an obstacle she needs to overcome.
No amount of time is going to make other politicos forget that this is what she’s all about. Her political career is toast. Bill Kristol can’s save her.
Objective Scrutator
I think that the Palin-Jindal 2012 ticket would be the best chance for Republicans to sweep every single office in America. The Republicans lost because they were trying to pander to Independents and other assorted nitwits. We need an appeal to Christian Nationalism, an unrelenting foreign policy, and a total devotion to the free market if we are going to win. Pro-choice Republicans, anti-Christian Republicans, Republicans opposed to the War on Iraq, Republicans that don’t want to nuke Iran, Republicans that don’t want to cut nearly every tax (especially for the wealthy), and Republicans that want to increase regulations on any industry in American are to blame for their loss.
John McCain will now be flung into oblivion, since he’s going to be ousted by Napolitano in 2010. Let’s hear it for the piercing of the RINO skin!
KT
John, You also forgot NH Senator Judd Gregg.
EastFallowfield
Forgetting Judd Gregg too. He’s pretty forgettable.
EastFallowfield

The Grand Panjandrum
You forgot Joe Lieberman.
BTW isn’t it the case that in this sort of election most of the moderates are flushed? Jim Leach of Iowa lost in 2006 and he was more liberal than half the Democrats in the House at the time. Now that the moderates in the Republican Caucus are about as rare as logical thought in wingnuttia we can look forward to rocket scientists like Eric Cantor (soon to be Minority Whip!!!!) driving the opposition over the cliff. Is that a roadrunner in Cantor’s rear view mirror?
Beep beep, motherfucker.
Darcy
Argh, I don’t like this any more than you do, but this is another story that stinks. John Sununu is an anti-abortion guy. He hasn’t always voted so that he is the most extreme proponent of it, but on the continuum of pro-choice vs. anti-abortion, Palin definitely should have no problem with him. I wish these articles would be better about telling people what they actually do, and not just what some random bitter said. Plus, if it is true that Palin refused to stand in support, it makes her more unreasonable than previously thought (if such a thing is possible).
littlesky
Because they were pro-choice? I’ll assume then that she never appeared with McCain while Joe Lieberman was around.
Brian J
No, not really. I imagine that it’s better to have moderate to liberal Democrats, or even a few conservative Democrats, in these seats rather than their not-crazy Republican counterparts enabling the agenda of the wing nuts. In the end, if the course the Republicans are currently on continues, they will be left with the Bachmanns and the Cantors. Once the loses get severe enough, they will be forced, even kicking and screaming, to wonder what happened. And as we all know, the first step to solving a problem is admitting that you have one.
Brian J
I’m surprised he’s not being mentioned more for national office. He won his recent race by a decidedly non-small margin of 52 points. That’s Jed Barlet-like territory!
Granted, I don’t know a lot about him, but from what I do remember reading about him, he seems more like a Bloomberg Democrat than anything else. In my book, that’s not a bad thing.

That Jindal character is kind of scary though. Do we really know who he is?
Brian J
If there was some change in the situation, it’d be a different story. But the only thing that has changed is that this election is over. We have two more coming up in the next few years, and from the looks of it, Palin appears to continue down the same path. She seems to want to be a candidate in 2012 and could very well make herself involved in races in other states, like the runoff Senate election in Georgia, in the mean time.

You almost want to think about what would happen if Bill Kristol was at some big conservative meeting with a bunch of people who were unfamiliar with his credentials and then someone walked in and said, "You know who has a PhD? That guy!" and then pointed to Kristol. Would they surround him like the brothers would surround a dime bag in a frat house after a night of drinking?
jcricket
Or they might switch parties. I know they’re more powerful in their current positions, but you never know what someone’s "conscience" is going to cause them to do. They are young enough to serve another 20+ years in office, but likely only if they end up Democrats.
BTW – was watching Maher last night Begala was surprisingly funny. His best quote was, in response to whomever said "80% of the GOP want Palin as a leader in their party". Begala responded, raising his hand, and said "And 100% of Democrats".
The asshat Queenan then said we (Democrats) were afraid of Palin. I think we were afraid of her for about 10 minutes, and then realized she could be beaten by letting Palin be Palin.
Jay B.
Snowe will be Senator for as long as she wants. She’s better and more liberal than Collins, and if Collins can win in this environment against a decent candidate like Allen, Snowe’s in.
That said, Gregg’s going down in 2010.
The thing you’re looking for here isn’t "Congressmen", it’s "Representatives". The GOP, once the dominant party for most of New England, shit, even in my lifetime, doesn’t have a single US Rep left. And only a few hanging on in upstate New York.
.
They have a couple of governors (VT, RI and CT), but the State Legislatures are dominated by Democrats.
Massachusetts, beyond all odds, actually increased the number of Democrats in the MA House. There are now 16 Republicans in the 160-seat Mass. House of Reps (and they have 5 Republicans out of 40 seats in the state Senate). But since there’s so much infighting and intrigue and power cliques, the Democrats often provide their own opposition party.

OT. I found a good summation of what’s happening with the Coleman/Franken race.
So any precinct that was still counting votes at midnight on tuesday would have to invalidate all the votes counted after midnight. Norm is trying to freeze the vote at the point where he was ahead by 750.
Calmer heads are prevailing so far, and Coleman’s games are getting him nowhere. Election officials are not being intimidated in the least.
The link includes a good three-part video of a press conference by Franken’s spokesman and also a Q&A with Franken’s attorney. Pick the lower of the two videos to see all three parts. If you’re interested, it’s a really good update. And also, you betcha!

Apropos of nothing, I would like to point out that Barack "Can’t win the big states" Obama won 8 of the 10 most populous states; 13 of the 15 most populous states; and 15 of the 20 most populous states.
If they called the election in order of states’ population size, rather than time zone, Obama would have reached 269 by the time they got to Indiana, the 15th most populous state. McCain would have had 49 at that point (Texas & Georgia).
Maryland (19th most populous state) would have put him over the top.

More proof that Sarah Palin is part of the PROBLEM with the Republican Party, NOT the solution. If she was smart, she would have sucked up or put aside any differences, at least while the cameras were on her.
Btw, I think it’s important to have people with different positions and opinions — and healthy (as opposed to toxic) debate — in the House and the Senate and between the White House or Executive branch and the Legislative. I’m just glad that the Democrats now hold a majority in both houses, especially as we see some Supreme Court justices retire. If Palin could barely stand to be on stage with two members of her own party because they differed with her on a couple of positions, just imagine how she would react to Supreme Court nominees who didn’t agree with her 100 percent on most issues? Scary.

I want a Republican candidate who understands that this country would really benefit from an election that is a referendum on Dungeons & Dragons.

Once upon a time New England was full of Republicans. Once upon a time Yankees formed the backbone of the GOP. Then came the success of Nixon’s Southern Strategy and Reagan’s pandering to racists, and all those New England Republicans were recast as RINOs, not Republican enough for the converts.
Today there are two Yankee Republicans left. The GOP is intent on purifying itself; good riddance.
Incertus
@JL: I don’t think it’s necessarily either an age or gender issue, but if I have to choose one, I’d go with age. Older people–and since I have a kid almost your son’s age, I’ll lump myself in with you–tend to think about the appropriateness of an action. When I heard the story, the first thing I thought, after noting that it had no real purpose other than to slam Palin for something unrelated to her policy positions, was that it seemed, well, indecorous. But then again, I’ve never been in a campaign, so I don’t know what’s considered proper or improper in those circumstances.
I do wonder, however, if we would have heard a similar story about a male VP candidate around the same age, and I suspect that if we had, it would have been told in a slightly different way.

It also seems somewhat contradictory to the "Diva" rumors. I don’t think of a "Diva" as someone who would casually have a chat with some aides in a bathrobe.

After seeing that front runner line up you just rattled off, I really do feel for moderate (i.e. sane) Republicans. There is not a sane, worthy candidate among them. The sadness must be great. I mean what kind of lot you just have where Mitt ‘Double Guantanamo’ Romney could appear so, ummmmm, normal and safe a choice.
The funny thing is the current Republican party overlords cant seem to grasp that going to the fringe is not a successful winning strategy. The road to victory is the soft middle.
Most people in the US could easily deal with a sane Republican president or opposition, I know I could. One party rule sucks and I know, no matter how much I believe that Obama will be a solid, moderate and adult president (i.e. taking a serious approach to governing), that the dems will just as easily go to excess over the long run as the repubs have done.
But if this is the farm system the Republicans have on a national level, they are in for a world of hurt. Although, the sad part is, even with this group, they could still pull in 45% of the electorate based on tribalism alone. Shudder.

Here is the idea: if you are running for office – any office – you should respect your opponent – and your allies in this case – even if they have views opposite to yours. Palin refusing to stand next to other Republicans just because they have different views is childish and ungodly. Does she mean that she is better than they are? So much so that she cannot share the same stage with them. This is exactly what Jesus warned us against. She’s not educated, she lacks courtesy and savoir-faire, yet other people gave her the benefit of the doubt. She should do the same to other human beings. She is not the chosen one, no matter what she thinks. I’m sorry but she does not represent all Christians.
I have another idea: if she did not learn that Africa is a continent, I wonder if she knows what is in the Bible? She does not give me the impression that she can learn anything – maybe she has a learning disability or maybe dislexia. She did not want to be coached or taught anything by the McCain Campaign. My husband thinks that her husband is governing Alaska inconspicuously – not her. It is possible.
Bender
Of course, you should know that this story is a lie manufactured from whole cloth, but anyone not naive to the extreme should’ve expected that all along.
In short, Sununu is 100% pro-life, so it’s a lie about Palin (who we are supposed to believe is so dumb she doesn’t know what Africa is but she’s so smart that she has an encyclopaediac memory for who’s pro-choice?) not wanting to be onstage with him. Bradley wasn’t running for Senate, so Newsweek wiffed there, too (Truth Squadding is only for GOP attacks in The Messiah’s Omerika!). Third, she appeared with them both onstage in Laconia, NH. So obviously, the whole story, and this whole post, is from some Bizarro World.
I’d say that I’ll expect John’s correction and his mea culpa for buying into the disgruntled-McCainiac/liberal-media’s fabrications, but that would be a little too principled for this blog, I think.
