Ok, here it is: Every time Obama wins an electoral vote, you have to take a shot.
This is your pre-Obama wave open thread. I an calling it 350 EVs for Obama. And I am including Georgia. In 2004, 835,000 African-Americans voted in the entire election. This year, 705,000 voted in early voting alone. I’m taking that as a good sign. In addition, I am hearing on local radio that the Atlanta suburbs are experiencing 15-20 minute waits at the polls. Not a good sign for McCain.
Josh Hueco
Shot of what?
Joe Beese
GA is going to give us a brand new funky President.

Chuck Butcher
Jeeze Michael, can you say, "alcohol poisoning"?
Halffasthero
Not after 350 shots…
Probably not after 150 : )
Dustin
Oh sweet Jesus, I’ll be passed out before the 2nd state at that pace. How about every time he wins a red state? I can handle that… maybe.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
REALLY! OMG.
So long Plussers, it was nice knowing you all. I’ll think of you all during the Obama administration.
The Grand Panjandrum
Beware! The Mac is Back. And I think Chris Matthews is about to have that thrill run up his leg very soon.
And limiting us to only one shot per EV is Unamerican, but you are a Canadian, right? (j/k!)
I have some pictures I’ll upload in a minute. Link coming soon.
Ugh
Since the electoral college won’t vote for some time yet, I think people will make it through the night based on this game.
Martin
Tonight it’s one drink for every state that Obama wins over what went for both Kerry and Gore. Tomorrow it’s one for every Senate seat pickup.
Lesley
This game is sure to result in severe alcohol poisoning, though this might not be a bad thing if wingnuts take the bait.
I would hate to see decent people die sooner than they should though.
Of course, if you made it a shot for every electoral vote for McCain, nobody would get high and that’s no fun.
Chuck Butcher
There was a day when my 150# put 250# serious drinkers under the table and I functioned at BAC that are statistically coma inducing, but gawd. No, I don’t miss that.
ohollern
How about we take a shot when McCain wins an electoral vote, that way we might not end up in the emergency room.
jake 4 that 1
Or you could put a gun to your head and take one shot that way. The effect would be the same and possibly not as messy. You trying to kill us?
Comrade Tax Analyst
Well, that’s more of a "Happy Medium". Of course, being a tea-tot’ler, it’s gonna have to be a shot of straight Orange Juice for me.
Martin
BTW, anyone who wants to join me, the following states don’t drink:
ME, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, DC
MI, WI, MN, IL
CA, OR, WA, HI
Everything else drinks. Likely are:
NH, VA, NC, FL, OH, IA, NV, CO, NM, MO
Landslide could bring in:
GA, IN, MT, ND, AZ
I’d say you’re safely in for 6-7 and possibly in for half a case.
Josh Hueco
Finally MSNBC’s live stream is up, but it’s not loading at all. Must be overwhelmed.
Stoic
I think Illinois would kill you all by itself.
JL
Let me finish my glass of wine before I agree to participate in a drinking game.
AkaDad
For every State Obama wins, I’ll hit the bong.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
Lucky you!
Cris v.3.1
dKos election tracker has the first results in from Kentucky and OMG WALNUTS IS AHEAD
Comrade Tax Analyst
That’s a very helpful list, Martin. Thanks.
Badtux
A shot of apple juice, maybe. But I’ll wait until the votes are counted before celebrating…
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
That’s okay Cris, CNN has the first results for Indiana and Obama is 55% (McCain 44%)
Comrade Darkness
Reporting coming in from Indiana!!
Obama!
Cris v.3.1
Speaking of the dKos tracker, god DAMN who is the team of wizards who developed that thing? Very nice work, good drill-downs, and of course it’s on one of those bulletproof servers that you can buy with massive ad revenue.
JL
@Comrade Darkness: Part of Indiana is in Central Time and those polls don’t close until 7 et. I think that corner should go for Obama but I’m not sure.
The Grand Panjandrum
OK. If you guys can’t take a shot for each EV than you aren’t REAL Obama supporters. Us REAL Obama supporters, however, will take up your slack.
PS: If I don’t post again, after tonight, please send your condolences to my wife and children.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
I’m using it and it’s awesome. The only problem I see is that it’s not self updating and I can imagine later in the evening it may take forever to get it to refresh.
Comrade Darkness
Hello!! Some of us are drinking absinthe right now. I would like to *remember* this evening, thank you.
Comrade Darkness
I was just celebrating the very first returns being blue. Nothing deeper than that, but thanks for optimistic followon.
Jennifer
@Martin: I’m drinking a beer for North Carolina now. Call it my preemptive strike. The Jennifer Doctrine, if you will.
Cris v.3.1
@CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII:
I think you’re mistaken; it is self-updating. I’ve had it running in a background tab while I work (really!) and every time I flip over to it, the numbers have changed. The refresh interval is probably just longer than our ordinary level of patience notices.
Clor
A shot…of water?
Since I’m no longer a college student (ah, the days), I’ll just stick to champagne.
Cris v.3.1
psilocybin it is, then
p.a.
I certainly hope you meant a shot every time O wins a state’s electoral votes. Or are you trying to cut down the traffic here?
Besides, i’ve spent the last 8 years drunk/numb to deaden the pain. Think I’ll enjoy this with my faculties in place- well, maybe a sip of Woodford Reserve later.
Krista
I’m just drinking wine at my own damn pace, thankyouverymuch. I’m really nervous and excited for you guys, though (and for the rest of the world, of course.)
GObama!
Laura W
@Jennifer: On behalf of NC, I’d like to thank you. Glug Glug.
JL
@Jennifer: I donated my champagne money to Barack so I purchased something called Prosecco. A sparkling wine from Italy. ($7.99 at Trader Joe’s)
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
Thanks for that info Cris. I guess it’s just my lack of patience.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
I think it’s interesting on the DKos Tracker that 3 people have had their votes reported in Maine. LMAO
Martin
It is sort of self-updating. I’ve seen the data change but I think there’s some kind of trigger – you need to roll over a state or something. I haven’t quite figured it out.
And, if the Scoreboard wasn’t cool enough, they are doing a diary on each state with an embedded live widget just for that race. That’s pretty impressive too.
Laura W
@JL: An EXCELLENT choice. Makes me wish I had some here now. Alas…the many decades of winohooddom have all but rendered me unable to drink anything involving grapes and yeast without wishing I were dead. Pisses me off. I LOVE WINE and all things related to wine.
Ooooooooo….Liddy’s goin’ down. You heard it from Norah first.
JL
@Laura W: Are you from NC? I just caught the end of Norah’s comment and she said something about an Obama tsunami?
Foxhunter
@Laura W:
Laura, I cruised through western NC a couple of weeks ago on a whirlwind BRP tour (had to detour north of Asheville due to road problems), but I was pleasantly suprised by the number of BO signs in rural areas. Didn’t see nearly the number of Dole signs…that suprised me. Guess she really did piss off the ‘base’ with her lack of attendance in her home state. This was before the ‘God’ ad….
Love your state…it’s part of my annual fall technicolor sabbatical.
Comrade Jake
Dana Bash described the mood inside Team McCain as "stoic".
Howard Fineman mentions how they ran more Wright ads in PA than anywhere else, and PA is seeing record African American turnout.
Please, please, make it so.
Laura W
@JL: I’ve lived here nearly two years. Came from CO, but originally from CA. I’d bet my…um…empty Ketel One bottle that NC goes blue tonight. I could offer up all kinds of anecdotal evidence from the last year or two, but you’ve heard it all before in other states and regions. The support here is phenomenal, and I’m in the western mountain region!
Hey…MSNBC is showing them letting people into Grant Park. Anyone know what John looks like?
Comrade Jake
@Laura W:
Look for the guy in big glasses, desert fatigues, and the African safari hat. That’s my best guess.
Laura W
@Comrade Jake: No clown shoes?
JL
@Laura W: My former mother-in-law is a long time resident of Hendersonville which I have visited frequently. I’m just 3 1/2 hours south in conservative no. fulton cty, ga.
Laura W
@Comrade Jake: Ha! I said John wore clown shoes and my comment got hijacked into "moderation!"
Will try again…
Cris v.3.1
He looks a little bit like Ernest Hemingway
Laura W
@JL: Well I shouldn’t divulge my whereabouts because I’ve been warned to "not trust the internets", however, let’s just say, I could almost ride a bike to your ex-mom-in-laws. If I rode bikes. And was in good shape.
(My two previous attempts to answer Jake re. what John may look like are trapped in moderation. Coincidence? I think not!)
Comrade Jake
@Laura W:
Well played, as usual.
JL
According to TPM a bellweather county in Indiana voted overwhelmingly for Obama. Vego County has Obama up 57 to 42 with 80% of the polls in. Vego County has only been wrong twice since 1892.
CIRCVS MAXIMVS MMVIII
As compared to? Stoic describes John McCain, doesn’t it?
kommrade jakevich
Indiana?
