Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There will be lawyers.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

It’s been a really long fucking year.

The willow is too close to the house.

Deploy the moving finger of emphasisity!

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

It’s not even safe to go out and pick up 2 days worth of poop anymore.

… makes me wish i had hoarded more linguine

I can’t take this shit today. I just can’t.

How do you get liars to care about the truth?

Four legs? good! two legs? we’re not so sure…

We still have time to mess this up!

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

We have all the best words.

Wetsuit optional.

Shocking, but not surprising

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

WTF? Onside kick?

Now a fluke int. Guess I am going to get a good night’s sleep.

*** Update ***

I can’t lie. Rubbing Oliver’s nose in it if we win with our backup qb in might lead to fatal gloating.

Although Leftwich should be starting somewhere. So should Culpepper.

Off topic, but coming to your site and seeing the words:

OT: We are getting hit by our first fall storm on the south Oregon coast and the power just came back on after being out for about an hour. I was sitting here reading online and all of the sudden beepbeepbeep as all seven of our APC units kicked on. I shut down the entertainment/network systems (APC 1400 on that), the two servers (two APC 1000’s on those), the garage APC (600) for my laptop, the two APC 1000’s in the kid’s rooms and the APC 1000 for my main computer. IOW, lots of beeping when the power went out…lol

Of course I left them on long enough to light some candles!

APC’s are a requirement on the coast with our winter storms. Same with the Honda generator we have in the garage, plus flashlights and extra batteries.

Redskin fan here. Indoctrinated since infancy. Couldn’t be happier. But Redskin fans, like Democrats, tend to expect the worst.

Yesterday was harder for me though. I wanted the Cowboys to be crushed, but that entailed rooting for the Giants. Enjoy my pain, but pity my Mother. The Redskins are responsible for more broken wine glasses than the Ring of Fire. Poor dear.

That brought back some nice memories. I don’t miss Oregon’s five-month-long rainy winters, but I always loved it when those nasty storms arrived at night…the winds blowing and the tree limbs rattling and whatnot. :)

On the other hand, it was 82 here in Waco today, so I can’t complain.

    @Josh Hueco:

I love the storms here too. They can get real nasty, the churning of the ocean can be felt through the ground (we are about 300 feet from the ocean) and heard real well. We moved here from Spokane, Washington in ’92 as I hate shoveling snow and everything being frozen. At least I don’t have to shovel rain!

But I do need to keep the inflatable raft handy. ; )

What I like about living here is Spring comes sooner and Fall comes later than in Spokane. Christmas is usually in the high 60’s to low 70’s during the day, which is always nice. Beats the crap out of snow and cold. We run in the high 40’s to low 50’s for our lows and it has been as high as 84 at Christmas.

We refer to the winter time here as the ‘monsoon season’, five months of rain is about right. At least the late Spring through early Fall are dry except for the foggy days.

I’m listening to the candidates’ halftime statements now. I admit I’m biased, but I thought Obama came across well with his humorous call for a playoff system in football. McCain came across as a bit crabbed in making steroid abuse his number one priority. That’s yesterday’s news. :(

CL: I spent a weekend in Spokane once. I thought it was very pretty country. It probably helped that it was in June and not January. :) I was also pleasantly surprised by the city’s size and culture. I went to a restaurant and had a chicken dish with brie sauce that was delicious!

    John, RE: the Mittster —

This is the start of the three-way no-holds-barred falls-count-anywhere tag match between the Corporate Cons, the TheoCons, and the NeoCons.

The TheoCons have lined up behind Palin — she’s their fair-haired girl for 2012, at least until she or her stringpullers egregiously screws up and Mike Huckabee swoops into the vacuum and graciously offers her a spot on his presidential ticket.

The CorporateCons are getting behind Romney — he’s got the money, he’s not Nosferatu with divorces like Rudy, and he’s sick and tired of having to kiss TheoCon butt.

The NeoCons — ah, now they’re interesting. They’re currently in bad odour, so they’re going to pull a chameleon act and blend into the background for a few months. I don’t know if they’re going to dare run their own candidate, but they might wind up the kingmaker in a Romney-Huckabee slugfest.

I know this would be be theme-appropriate in the other thread, but I’d like to vent and want people to see it here. Earlier this afternoon, as I was flipping between the channels, Michael Barone on Fox implied that a significant portion of Obama’s fund raising, which he only got because he broke his promise, was from sketchy sources. It was such an outrageously exaggerated claim, if it’s even true, that I wanted to jump through the screen and beat the Buddy Holly glasses off that son of a bitch’s face.

Palin "released" her "medical records". By that I mean she released a single page letter from her personal physician saying she’s in good health. Classy move at the last minute there.

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories, but I’m on the fence about this whole "the baby isn’t hers" thing.

She’s either being secretive just to be secretive, like Cheney. Or because there’s something really bad in the medical records. Given that we know she’s not old and dying, I think there just might be something to this whole idea her birth story is ridiculously fishy.

Oh I know. I really couldn’t care less – but it’s one more thing where her strange secretive behavior helps discredit her. This is the same woman who demanded to see the marriage certificate for a previous political opponent because his wife kept her maiden name (thus making their marriage a sham).

I say there’s a 10% chance there’s something fishy in her medical records, and a 90% chance she’s just being a secretive, lying, vindictive wingnut because she thinks its her right.

Agreed. What Sarah is selling may be popular in Alaska but that doesn’t mean that everyone else in the country will buy it.

    Josh, about Spokane:

There are some really great places to dine in Spokane, and it is a good looking, diverse city. That said, the place sucks donkey dicks. It’s a great place to grow up but forget about living there. The city government sucks, the police and sheriff departments are about as corrupt as they get, and the politics there are predominantly right wing. I lived there for over 30 years and it was a relief to get out of there.

That said, it is one of the few towns where I will drink water right out of the tap. The Spokane aquifer is famous for its quality water. The town is in a river valley, on the edge of the forests to the north and the prairies to the south. Coming into Spokane on I-90 (eastbound), you see little but scattered farms, businesses and small towns across the prairie. The interstate rises before it reaches the valley edge. Once you crest it and descend into the valley the town is laid out below. It is a very beautiful view, especially at night.

Most of our families (wife’s and mine) are still living there, so we go up there regularly to visit them. It is a great place to visit, but after a week or so I am ready to get out of it. Now I am a small town guy and I like it that way. But if you are young and looking for a place to have fun, Spokane is a good place to start.

Just avoid the cops and you will do ok…lol! They will ticket you for looking the wrong way. While walking. Once they ‘know’ you, you can expect to get pulled over regularly.

    Examples:

Defective Equipment = K-Mart Fog lights purchased in Spokane.

Excessive Engine Noise = No ordinance on the books but they just charge it under "Defective Equipment".

Littering = Pulling over on the return trip from surgery and stopping the car to vomit next to the curb from a reaction to the anesthesia. I was the passenger and they ticketed me. I had to go to court to fight it but I won.

Traction Bars too low = Just an excuse to pull you over.

License Plates too high = No shit, on a ’72 ‘Cuda. I pissed the cop off by letting a bit of air out of the air shocks because he said my rear plate was a half-inch too high…lol!

I could go on and on with stupid shit like this. Like I said, once they get to ‘know’ you, they will make your life miserable.

Is this some kind of sign? And if so, what the hell does it mean?

That it’s Monday, so only one game today and MLB is done for the season.

Hey, anyone from Florida get that 3am robocall last week from Ridge?

They are sinking mondo-cash into the panhandle, which means if they are still competing for votes in Gadsden or Wakulla or all points West, then there is gonna be some major ass-whoopin in store for ole Johnny Mac

I’m not surprised to hear what you have to say about Spokane. I believe that was also the hometown of closet-homo Republican (but I repeat myself) Jim West.

Hmmmm … no Zogby leak to Drudge tonight … This must be … good news for john McCain!

Not only that, but now that tonight’s results are out, Drudge has not updated the latest Zogby numbers from yesterday’s +7.1% to today’s +11.4%.

    @jcricket:

    Here’s a hint:

The baby ain’t hers it’s her kids. Speaking as someone who’s wife is a nurse and who’s sister-in-law is in the Airline industry:

Medically a doctor would never clear her to fly

Airline wise an airline would never let her on a plane. Can you imagine the lawsuits if she’d (or any pregnant woman) gone into labor in the air? Both from the mother if something had gone wrong and the 100+ passengers on the flight?

    It ain’t hers.

Here’s the kicker. I don’t care. I’d imagine that most people who aren’t in wingnuttia don’t care. Her daughter got pregnant. Shit happens. The family is obviously well enough off to care for the baby. Whatever you think about Palin, her family seems pretty tight knit. Politics and their beliefs aside, it seems like a good and caring family.

Other than her political aspirations, I don’t know why it’s such a big deal to have a baby out of wedlock.

    Apropos of nothing:

I live in the Bay Area, it’s rained a lot in the last few days. A month or so ago I had my back yard ripped out as the wife and I are going to re-do it in the spring. So it’s pretty much bare dirt.

To my surprise today, I see that enough dirt has washed away exposing some of the sprinkler system plumbing. Which is basically green garden hose hooked up to the sprinkler heads covered by a thin layer of (now washing away) dirt.

    Nice!!

I was thinking about re-doing it anyway, I guess now I’ll have to.

"Michelle Malkin is a national treasure!"

indeed, like a treasure chest, she is something that should be buried and forgotten about for a long, long time.

I hope you are making some good dime off those PJTV ads. "Goodbye NBC, CBS, ABC – here comes Hugh Hewitt News!" For reals?

    Can’t sleep…clown will eat me.

I’m actually feeling rather neglected, never once getting robo-called here in PA. I guess it’s because I live in a predominately R suburban county, though there has been a ton of the expected 527 funded Reverend Wright ads this evening on Comcast.

As far as PA coal counties go, dumbass McCain already had as much support in Pennsyltucky as he was ever going to get. Which is lucky for him, seeing as how the coal industry already views McCain as somewhat squishy on the whole subject.

I still don’t really understand why Jacksonville let Leftwich go (Garrard is a marginal improvement. Maybe.) and furthermore why Leftwich chose to be a back up in Pittsburgh with quarterback openings in Detroit, San Francisco, Oakland, etc, where he could definitely still be a serviceable starter.

As for the election? I’m in full superstition mode. Not a word of celebration or chastising until the polls are closed.

    Oliver,

FWIW, I thought the Skins’ Defense played very well last night–especially in the first half. I hope they take out their frustrations from last night on the Cowboys in two weeks (and, since I’m a Steeler fan, on the Ravens in December).

I don’t know if anyone said it, but that indicator about the Redskins and the incumbent party is over. They lost their last home game in ’04. I think the Pack beat them.

As for Leftwich, I was never a fan, and am still unsold in spite of how well he played in one half. I was worried about the prospect of a completely immobile quarterback playing behind an offensive line with suspect pass-blocking skills. Glad he played well, but I want Ben back and healthy.

    Looking ahead for the Steelers:

    11/9 Indianapolis
    11/16 San Diego
    11/20 Cincinnati

In other words: The Colts, The Bolts, and The Dolts.
