They look good together, and Biden looks like he is having the time of his life. I sort of ignored all the babble about the happy warrior last night, but there really might be something to it. they look good together. The other thing is that Biden is a good enough of a speaker that he doesn’t seem completely over-shadowed after hearing Obama. I doubt Kaine and others could have accomplished that.
And I really do not think it can be underestimated how much the beltway boys love Biden. The Matthews/Russert/Imus axis of loudmouth love the guy, and that isn’t a knock on Biden.
*** Update ***
“Which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at…”- Biden is already sticking it to them. The other thing that is great about this is that Biden may be just the right guy to goad the wingnuts and McCain into a volcanic eruption, which will be fun simply for the sheer entertainment value.
*** Update #2 ***
Not sure when this happened, but Chris Matthews and John McCain broke up. Matthews is all pissed off about McCain’s campaign tactics the last few months. He is making Olbermann look positively… non-partisan. From a talking head perspective, Biden is a great choice, it appears.
*** Update #3 ***
Harold Ford, who has not once paused from stepping on the neck of his own party for the past six months, is positively GUSHING about Biden as VP.

Heh. I was thinking the exact same thing. If anyone will piss McCain off enough to explode, it’s Biden. Biden’s a guy who says just enought to piss you off, then leaves it there.

This is a disgusting attack on McCain’s time as a POW and since they now have brought up kitchens we are now in our right to throw the kitchen sink at both of them.”

“Biden may be just the right guy to goad the wingnuts and McCain into a volcanic eruption”
With Obama trying to run a positive campaign, and getting his ass handed to him in the process, I have been hoping that the Obama camp feels that it has a “button question”, that they know that McSHAME will go off on. Let the public see the “infamous temper” for themselves. I was hoping it would happen during the Presidential debates.
But, what the heck. If Biden knows how to push that button, let him push it early, and let him push it over and over again.

As I said earlier today, if Biden simply gets the ticket better coverage from people like Matthews, he’ll be an incredible asset to the ticket.

Out of all the people Obama could have chosen I think Biden is the best, strongest choice. After seeing them together they both seem like happy warriors and sort of have an unbeatable air about them. (Not that the dems should get overconfident.)
Biden is smart, articulate (hehe) and actually has a sense of humor that doesn’t make you cringe. Not to mention that he has the goods on McCain and will likely say many things that will piss ’em off, prompting McCain’s jeckyl side. He can criticize McCain like no one else, as someone who REALLY REALLY knows him.

Just around the time Spector’s cancer came back this Spring, Matthews really started hitting Bush and McCain hard, and stopped hitting Hillary. I think he’s been talking to his pal Eddie Rendell.

Romney is actually quite smart and within his business specialty one of the most accomplished. Since that business specialty is raping labor, cheating consumers, and skimming profits away from shareholders, it does not give him much popular support.
Remember the flood of ephedra weight-loss aids that killed so many people a few years ago? One of Romney’s greatest hits.
Dennis - SGMM
Somehow I don’t think that it will be Mittens. McCain is unlikely to pick anyone whom he doesn’t see as a buddy – and he dislikes Romney. Romney brings little to the ticket and he was such a lackluster campaigner that despite spending a boatload of his own money he managed to finish with exactly seven more delegates than Huckabee (274-267).

I just can’t believe (but I can hope) that McCain will pick Romney. Just imagine: two sons of privilege (son/grandson of admirals and son of a governor) vs. two sons of the middle class (son of a single, at-times-food-stamp-using single mother and the son of a car salesman). He’ll have to pick someone from a humble background — if he can find one in the republican party.

I hear you. One side of my family came to America as a Hessian soldier here to put down that little insurgency. My grandmother, a quaker from Baltimore, hated Catholics and those who practiced mass-like stuff (“damned high church nonsense”) and probably would have been more comfortable with me entering into a gay marriage with a jewish transexual than me marrying a catholic girl.

Well, with good reason. Romney’s a douchebag. I suspect McCain despises him, because when he looks at Romney, he sees himself.

I guess McCain can’t pick someone he ran against, given how he is now using Biden’s words against Obama. Although this sort of crap happens every cycle.
And I am pretty sure Obama considered Hillary, he just didn’t need to vet her anymore than he did during the never-ending primary. It’s not like he wasn’t doing oppo research.
As far as Romney goes, and I still think/hope he is on the top of the McCain’s list, I can’t wait for the debate. I really, really hope he accuses Biden of being liberal or something. To which Biden can defend liberal positions like health care, social security, etc., and then proceed to remind America of Romney’s liberal positions on gay marriage and choice which he conveniently abandoned.

Ooooh, maguro, can we go get some more? That WAS yummy! And the sake was absolutely delightful.
As someone from DE, I was sort of apprehensive about this pick. I grew up enmeshed in the corporate DE structure and I was nervous about Biden’s corporate connections. I like him personally, always have, since I was 10 and he became my senator, but, I just worry that he’ll bring more corporate importance to Washington than mom and pop issues. If he fights for the little guy, I’m happy with this choice.

That’s not true. My Scottish ancestor came here for the land grants. He could have returned to Scotland. My French Huegenot and German Palatinate ancestors, however, would fall under that category.

I sure hope so. She has absolutely zero experience in government, and her executive experience at HP was an abject failure pockmarked with massive layoffs and decimated stock value. Nobody calls her on it when she does her talking head schtick, but she won’t be able to get away with it if she were to join the McCain ticket. And she’s pro-choice, so goodbye base.
Come to think of it, I highly doubt that McCain would choose her.

Biden helps enormously. Everyone is focusing on his foreign policy cred, which does help, but Biden is a family man that takes the train to work and lives in a normal house and speaks bluntly. Don’t underestimate how well he can tie Obama’s message to the people that historically voted Democrat and might be unsure about Obama. Biden wins the swing states. I don’t think McCain can counter in his VP pick, and McCain himself can’t.
This really is a good team and not just for campaigning but for leading the nation as well.
FWIW, my Catholic Irish family came to get away from the Brits. My great xN grandfather joined the Union army shortly after they landed in NY at the start of the war (was probably the only job he could get). What followed was a long line of public service members – military, police, fire, nurses, that lasts to this day. (9/11 was quite a family crisis with upwards of a dozen family members involved in one way or another.) Nobody cares about religion or ethnicity in politics in my family anymore except for my grandparents generation, and there’s virtually none of them left. But if you want the respect of anyone in my family, you better be willing to get your hands dirty and work your ass off and you better be able to demonstrate why society is better off by your presence. Anyone who is too good to dig ditches or thinks they are a hard worker because they made themselves rich and never helped anyone can go fuck themselves. My family survived because they banded together and supported each other.
Don’t know how many houses you own? Done. There is no recovery from that kind of statement because it shows that you don’t pay your own bills and don’t know the value of money or work.

Even if he really wants to, I can’t see McCain (or his handlers) going with a “daring” choice like Fiorina or Whitman (or Jindal or Huckabee) because it’s not a Quayle situation; McCain’s VP will have a much better than average chance of having to step into the presidency, even if only temporarily, due McCain having health problems at some point in the next four years.

Carly Fiorina, awesome, the one choice that would make Mitt look like a man of the people, (hey some might buy a succuessful CEO, but a failed CEO– who isn’t named Bush), man Carly would make me want to re-fight FISA, I mean good god, casn you imagine the debate where she argued the wiretaps would be limited and Biden pointed out she went all Kissinger on her own employees, seriously, other than beign a Woman what is the case for Fiorina, and if McCain needs a woman why her over Palin, or Christine Todd-Whitman, or hell Kay Bailey Hutchinson?

Actually she came up in a TL thread not too long ago, and when someone mentioned that she helped drive HP into the ground the PUMAs screamed that she was actually brilliant and her termination was just another case of the old boys network unable to tolerate a smart women who stood up to them, or something.
I think the pro-choice thing scotches her chances more than her other huge drawbacks. McCain might pick a woman, and he might pick a pro-choice VP, but not both.
Tom
And a Democratic VP who wouldn’t shy away from bashing her for her failure…inspired.
Also, maybe she could chat some more about health insurance, and coverage of Viagra versus birth control. Let’s see if McCain remembers a position on this topic.
On the other hand:
Palin: currently deeply involved in her very own scandal. See TPM for details.
Whitman: GOP voters would go ape-sh*t.
Hutchinson…Eh…
Brachiator
The quote is from a comedy film, dude. It’s not meant to be a definitive statement about history. But the sentiment is true enough in many ways.
The Puritans didn’t come to America for noble reasons. They were kicked out of England because no one could stand their arrogant intolerance of other religions, and they later left Holland because they could not stand to be around people who actually tolerated them, but expected them to be respectful of others.
Parts of Georgia and other states were penal colonies meant to soak up the refuse of England. The Revolutionary War queered that deal, and the Brits later had to make do with Australia.
Connections to the English royal bloodline became suspect after the Revolution, and were rendered irrelevant (except to those addicted to snobbery) when the Constitution put an end to the idea of hereditary titles.
A colleague, a very pious and upright Christian, had to re-examine a lot of his assumptions when he learned that his grandmother came from Spain to America alone, without friends or connections and was for a time, a whore, pure and simple. But she did not allow herself to be reduced or defined by her circumstances. Her temperament did not allow her to accept the “destiny” laid out for her by her family in her home country, nor did she allow herself to be dismissed as a “fallen woman” in her adopted homeland.
No matter how you slice it, part of the reality of America is that it is made up of lots of people of all races, genders and class who were told by somebody somewhere, “You ain’t nuthin’,” and whose reply was simply, “Just watch me.”
This makes it all the more astonishing that McCain and the GOP Smear machine would try to diminish Obama’s life as representing elitism, and it makes Biden’s selection as Obama’s running mate an stinging rebuke to the Republican shit slingers.

I think Obama and Biden compliment each other very well, and both come from the ‘common man’ roots. They look good together on the stage, and they each have their own style of speaking and communication. Barack is the ‘new kid on the block’ in politics, and Joe has been on the hill long enough to know all of the ins and outs of Washington politics. That knowledge will be helpful to Obama as he is gathering information on how to get something done.
That does not mean that Obama would do whatever Biden says, but rather he would use the ‘Washington political insider’ Biden provides to help find a way to accomplish what he wants. Obama has already made it clear that he will be the leader, but he will lead with advice from the best minds he can assemble. Biden is one of those minds, and Obama intends on having him as a close adviser.
Biden came out swinging today, and while I do not expect him to be gaffe free throughout the election, I believe that in the end he will be a net positive by a large margin. If Obama is perceived (incorrectly, IMO) to be an ‘elitist’, there is no way in hell that Biden could be considered one.
One thing that Biden did that irritated me to no end is that he voted for the bankruptcy bill, but after reading around I have softened my anger a bit. The credit card companies base out of Delaware, and while I vehemently disagree with his vote I do realize that at least Joe was representing his ‘constituents’. The other Democrats who voted for the bill don’t have that cover…lol ;)
Overall, good choice and I think this is going to be an interesting election. Definitely one for the history books, that’s for sure.

The irony here is that the best people in the State Department have been right about various foreign policy issues while Cheney has been spectacularly wrong.
Instead of Biden taking on State duties in addition to serving as VP, Obama could benefit from having someone like Bill Richardson serve as Secretary of State.

That’s ‘smart’ and ‘accomplished’ in the judas goat sense. Since he didn’t wanna go back to Teh Heartland after his exciting missionary stint in Paris and heady introduction to the WASPY New England high life (pink golf slacks printed with lime-green whales — daring!), Willard looked around at his Harvard Business School classmates and brilliantly discovered his career niche as a figurehead. The Mormon ‘stakes bishops’ (Romney has served in that position himself) are forever looking for a good place to stash the mandatory tithes from their humble hard-working congregations, and Romney was a lot more palatable than his fellow Joo Yark / Wall Street vulture capitalists. The fact that the working- and middle-class Mormons were paying Romney to take their money and use it to destroy the companies that kept their families and communities afloat is just one of those delicious historical ironies.

My old roomie was happy to let me grow weed, but only as long as he got a cut of the cash…lol! Very church centered family, but money was what they lived for. Several Uncles and other family members were in some trouble about some scam in Boise, Idaho. I co-managed an apartment complex with a Mormon couple, and the husband ripped off a bunch of retiree’s money in his ‘business investment’ (a car wash). He ran off after the law caught up with him about another child he had out of wedlock in Texas, but he made sure to take the rest of the loot and leave everyone with the bills (including his wife).
Sorry, no sympathy for Mormons here. I am sure that there are good ones out there, but I have not met them yet. But I will always be polite to them, it is the least I can do.

The Irish have been coming to the United States since it was a batch of colonies. “Only came here to eat” is horseshit. Why not just call us a pack of dirty micks while you’re at it?
Conservatively Liberal
I am Irish, German and French (must mean I am a whiskey, beer and wine drinking cheese-eating surrender monkey!), and if my descendants came here to eat, more power to them!
They were the smart ones. ;)

Eli Rabett
Delia, walking about Stockholm, Eli remarked upon the large number of Irish bars. Ms. Rabett, noted that the Swedes are depressed drunks, the Irish happy drunks and inquired whom would Eli rather drink with. . . .

My mom was an Italian immigrant who came over in the 1960’s and never became a U.S. citizen.
On my dad’s side, my ancestor hopped on a boat from London in 1646, landed in New Haven Colony, changed his last name, married Captain Nathaniel Turner’s daughter and died one of the richest men in New Haven. I am Howard Dean’s 10th cousin. Not that I ever met the guy.
When I find out which one of my ancestors blew my rightful inheritance, I will locate his grave and piss on it.

They got hitched three months later. I think the marriage was part of a plea bargain in exchange for dropping the criminal charges. Ain’t love grand.
