Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Historically it is a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Too inconsequential to be sued

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

This blog will pay for itself.

Just a few bad apples.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Lighten up, Francis.

Dinky Hocker shoots smack!

What fresh hell is this?

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Shocking, but not surprising

This is a big f—–g deal.

This is how realignments happen…

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I’m going back to the respite thread.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

‘Forty-two’ said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Ouch:

Robert Greenwald takes McCain to task for a few of his about faces. Maybe Hillary is staying in to take McCain’s spot when he is forced to drop out?

speaking for me only. I am not saying this to be snarky, but merely to point out that I am not John. Well, actually the last sentence is supposed to be snarky, but not the italicized part.

    Hi, Not-John.

Bill Kristol’s at it again. The stupid, it burns!

I can’t figure out which is the most stupendous example of self-delusional wingnuttiness: promoting the WV primary as as the reason why Obama is in trouble in the fall; or the ranting on the CA gay marriage decision while accusing Obama just a couple of paragraphs later of trying to “divert voters” from the really important topics like gas prices or health care.

Well, it’s O/T and hasn’t been discussed here lately, but it has been before: the mortgage/credit crunch/crisis. I have typically run screaming from these discussions as I feel really underequipped, brainwise, for understanding global economics. Anyway, last night I listened to the This American Life podcast from last week, I guess it would be dated 5/11 or so. It was a really interesting look at this phenomenon, from a Veteran homeowner in over his head all the way up to the Global Pool of Money, and very layperson-friendly. What I’m trying to say is that I recommend it.

In other complicated things I’m trying to understand, maybe someone can point me towards something explaining the corn/ethanol/grain/global food crisis interrelationship. I was talking about this with my husband, who was saying, wait, I thought we produced so much corn it was problematic, it was rotting in silos, etc. (see Michael Pollan, etc.) and that the price was completely arbitrarily fixed by the U.S. Gov’t anyway, why is it that now normal supply & demand rules are supposedly applying to corn and driving up the price. I thought it was a good question.

And thirdly, Sadly, No has convinced me to give $ to Haiti this month. They are, literally, eating these caked things of baked dirt. I have gone about 80% vegetarian over the past few months, and it really has let me spend less on food.

I can’t find a single recent instance of a candidate who ultimately became his party’s nominee losing a primary by this kind of margin.

Well, given that Hillary lost the DC primary by 51 points, the Dem nominee this year will have lost a primary by at least 41 no matter which of them win.

    Kristol is simply retarded.

I think Hillary Clinton would make an awesome substitute for John McCain. They’re both 100% genuine Commander-in-Chief candidates, which is a crucial qualification considering the war in Iraq and all the tough decisions that need to be made going forward.

And… what’s the connection here? You’ll spend even less if you eat dirt, too?

(But srsly, the Haitians have it really bad now.)

    May 19, 2008 at 10:51 am

Well, undoubtedly eating dirt would enable me to spend even less…
No, the point is primarily that I have a tight budget. After years of not budgeting well and getting into debt, I now track my expenses fairly meticulously and have noticed that even with rising food prices, I have been able to spend less on food by hardly ever buying meat. (I have also been trying to spend less on food in other ways, so it’s not exactly a double-blind study.) I am determined to not live beyond my means any more, and since I didn’t really live high on the hog to begin with, I pay more attention to the little things. I am on track to end the month in the black and be able to give some to charity, that’s all.

    SHIN BET = NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN

Participants at a recent inner cabinet meeting were listening to details of the Egyptian mediation initiative between Israel and Hamas on a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip recently, when a senior minister reportedly reminded those present that Israel does not negotiate, directly or indirectly, with Hamas. Shin Bet security service head Yuval Diskin interrupted, saying there was no other way to describe the talks.

A lot of the global food crisis is caused by the response. That is, as prices rose slightly govts moved to ban export, and people moved to horde food further tightening the supply.

Although I suspect the instability in Zimbabwe also plays a role, as that nation used to be an exporter of food for African nations and now they can barely feed themselves.

    Jen:

Nobody can actually explain the relationship between food prices, ethanol, and our country’s wacko corn policies. Why? Because the effects are being masked by the massive flow of speculative capital washing through the world commodities market. Last year, wheat (not used for ethanol, BTW) went from $6 a bushel to over $15. Now it’s back to $7. Why? Some good reasons, but the real reason was speculation by big money traders and hedge funds. Similar things are happening with all foodstuffs, and oil too. Capital that drove the housing bubble is getting out, and looking for new areas of return.

And do you suppose that the Bush administration has addressed the massive effects of hedge trading funds that are driving this market wackiness? (Rhetorical question, obviously. You already know the answer.)

SusanG, in comments over at this stupid article @ HuffPo:

Ditto – If he’s the nominee, I refuse to be complicit in losing the white house once again! I cannot vote for a candidate with little experience as this: – 2 yrs as a community organizer – 6 yrs in a state legislature that meets 55 days a year and only attended to his functions 143 days in the Senate! The country tried that with Bush, I’m not willing to support our equivalent this time around!

you refuse to be complicit in his loss, so… you won’t vote for him!

    that’s fucking brilliant!
