Picked up Season 1 of BSG today when I went to get my new modem, and so far the first episode appears to be nothing more than the movie I watched.
Also, in the mail, I got Glenzilla’s new book, Great American Hypocrites, which I will try to review next week. One of the chapters is named “Tough Guise,” which I thought was a great chapter name.
Consider this your open thread for the night.

Yes, that’s a great chapter name. But the title for the book kinda sucks.
I’m surprised that Glenn didn’t take one of the great book titles that were offered when he asked for suggestions a few months back.
Eh. You can’t have everything. Where would you put it? (stolen line, I know.)

First disc of season 1 is the miniseries. Skip right to the second disk and enjoy “33” which I still think is the best hour of drama ever filmed for American TV.

Don’t mean to be dense. BSG? We don’t have cable…

BSG = Battlestar Galactica. A reimagining of the old show. Generally pretty good and about to start it’s fourth and final season this friday.
33 is one of the best episodes, which is kind of sad in a way since it is also the very first episode in the series (after the premiere movie). It sets the bar a little too high.

Battlestar Geeklactica.

I agree with Jon. 33 is an awesome episode and moreover the first “real episode” to the series.

John,
It’s good to see you’ve had a change of heart and have come to the realization of your errors, but I have to ask you; Why, as an educated man whose knowledge of history and politics are well above average,
Why did you vote for George W. Bush the first time?
Why did you vote for George W. Bush a second time?
Why did you vote for a Republican Congress in 2004, which by 2002 in its current configuration had shown itself to be unethical, corrupt and immoral?
.
And no, I’m not trying to be snarky, I really would like to know why an intelligent, educated person would vote and continue to vote for a person who had proven to be wholly inept and incompetent in everything he had ever attempted (other than the lucky sperm contest) and for a group of people who were proven unethical and corrupt.
And this is without even referencing their “Southern Strategy” and its affect on race in this country or their other anti-middle class policies.

OK – so Jon was engaging in amusing hyperbole about it being the best hour of drama on TV. I am a sucker for sci-fi so I’ll give you all the benefit of the doubt. I personally think The Wire is the best show ever made, at least it’s in the discussion. Can’t wait for Season Five to hit DVD.
Just Some Fuckhead
Since you put it that way, why ARE you supporting HRC?

For me, BSG improved with each season, but sort of stalled with the last few episodes of Season 3. “Exodus:Part II” is my favorite – full of jaw-dropping moments big and small. As far as debates on the finest TV shows out there, I can’t really say – after all, I am looking forward to new episodes of Gossip Girl.*
*No, Gossip Girl isn’t on BSG’s level. It’s not even on Highlander (before they made Richie immortal) level. But I can’t stop watching.
Incertus
Apparently, shera, they producers decided to make some changes in the story arc in the middle of season 3, but they couldn’t reshoot everything, so they had to sort of make do, and it shows. Season 3, especially the end, is the weakest part of the show. What I’m really hoping is that since they went into this season knowing it would be their last, that they pulled out all the stops. We’ll see starting Friday.

The Wire?!? Eeeuuw.
I’m just sayin.

She and her husband, no matter how much negativity is attributed to them has done more for this country than the average American.
Is she the best candidate, no.
Has she made mistakes, yes.
.
However, my decision to support Hillary is based upon these two main points.
1) I know what I will get from Hillary if she becomes president and I know I will agree with 90% of it.
2) I think I know what I will get from Obama if he becomes president and I think I will agree with 90% of it.
And you know what after seeing how the country got burned because a certain portion of us thought we knew what we were getting from George W. Bush if he became president, I’m ready to be a little more conservative this time and go with a sure thing over a “different kind of politician” person.
tBone
Me too. I was worried about that entire story arc going in, but it turned out to be chock-full of Win.
BJ
If the movie you watched was “Razor”, I’m thoroughly suprised you even bought the DVD’s. Pretty much everything else is a step up from that, though as mentioned, it grows season over season.
The Pirate
BSG is good, but after a while it became a little too Lost-ish and soap-opera for me.
But there can be no dispute that The Wire is the greatest show in the history of television.
Billy K
Agreed. I was halfway through shouting something about a shark, and then Part II started….whoa.

I’m not supporting Hillary Clinton anymore, but I did vote for her in the primaries so I can answer this.
I misjudged her.
I was very impressed by the way she handled herself in the debates. One moment stood out for me; the one where the pundits all said she’d a mistake, on the driver’s license for immigrants issue. The press was playing it as though she’d blundered, but when I watched it, it seemed to me both Edwards and Obama were piling on because they saw a chance to score cheap points (ohhh, she’s waffling!), while she was speaking very carefully and thinking about the big picture, which included not throwing a Democratic governor under the bus. I was impressed. There were other episodes that made me think, this is a woman who’s very politically aware, who thinks about what she says, who thinks about the big picture when she speaks, and who’s very loyal to the party and who does not throw fellow Democrats under the bus (recall she voted against the bill to censure Moveon, and refused an opportunity to jump on them).
At the same time, Obama was doing things that really bothered me. Remember he attacked Hillary’s health care plan for having mandates. I felt he was attacking her from the right, pursuing his own political gain, at the risk of possibly hobbling the debate on healthcare in the future by pushing what an acceptable plan could look like to the right. And Obama’s talk of unity and going beyond the politics of the past made me wonder if he was watching what’s been going on the last decade.
And I thought, and still think, we needed a candidate who could stand up to the right wing smear machine, both during the election, and afterwards. And I wondered if Obama had the experience to navigate it. I felt Hillary at least had the experience of dealing with it, and with her political acumen, she had the best chance of taking it on, eyes wide open. So I voted for her.
My process of disillusionment was gradual. I decided I’d made a mistake about the time she said both she and John McCain had crossed the commander in chief threshold, but she couldn’t say about Obama. That shocked me; I never expected her to do that.
And now I’m just completely stunned. Instead of abiding by the decision of the DNC that she and all the candidates agreed to in advance, but instead she’s gone in the opposite direction. She’s telling the citizens of Michigan and Florida that if they’re delegates are not seated, than they are victims. She’s telling them that the party as disenfranchised them. She’s telling them it’s because of Obama, the likely nominee. She’s telling them that unless they’re seated, Obama will not be a legitimate candidate.
She is helping to drive all of that insanity we’re seeing on the pro-Hillary blogs. People naturally look up to her, I looked up to her, and when she leads in a certain direction, of course to some degree they follow. She’s certainly not responsible for all the craziness we’re seeing, but if she’d simply been willing to play the game by the rules, which favored her to begin with, if she’d set an example, we wouldn’t be seeing nearly the amount of insanity we’re seeing. But she’s doing the opposite; she’s pushing on that craziness. And she’s pushing on it purely to gain a small chance of winning in a contest she is most likely to loose anyway. And it is likely to damage are chances of winning the Presidency in 2008.
I don’t know what to say, I’m just floored. All this time John was going on about how he couldn’t stand her, how he didn’t trust her with power, and I had no idea what he was talking about, I thought he was crazy. I really respected her, and I can hardly believe I was so wrong about her. I’m just completely floored.

I read the summary of previous seasons on Salon and I think I can boil it down even further:
* Everyone’s a Cylon and none of them know it.
* Everyone has hot robot sex.
* They eventually find earth, only to find it populated with super-smart monkeys and Charlton Heston’s corpse.
The end.

Confirmation bias clouded your judgement. Go back and watch it. She’s clearly stuck between which set of voters to throw under the bus and can’t decide so she tries to change the thrust of the question. Over and over. This was one of the first big missteps of her campaign (maybe the first but it all blurs together for me). That is, they wouldn’t answer a fucking question because they assumed they had the nomination in the bag and didn’t want to give anyone any possible reason not to vote for them.
So essentially, instead of starting as a candidate with a hypothetical 0% support trying to figure out what points to make to move that number up, the Clinton campaign started with 100% hypothetical support (Democratic) and tried to play every side in order not to decrease that number.
Contrast her answer with Barack Obama’s answer. His was the “correct” liberal answer and he fleshed it out further by pointing out the obvious, folks aren’t breaking into America to drive.

Yeah and I think Terry Bradshaw is the best quarterback EVAH! Unfortunately, TB isn’t running for President.
Come to think of it neither is Bill but there he is in your reply.
