For whatever reason, my Itunes has been unable to look up the names of songs when I put the CD in the machine. Is the server just temporarily down, or have I screwed something up? If it is just a server issue, is there a way to upload the names at a later date?
FYI- Abbey Road, The J.B.’s, and Beastie Boys- Some Old Bullshit are the discs I tried this morning and can not get loaded.
Also, I want to start watching Battlestar Galactica. I remember watching either a movie or something, but could someone please link the amazon links to the first season or whatever is available right now? there is so much of this crap out there that I want to make sure I buy the right one.
Finally, I couldn’t sleep again last night and Pulp Fiction was on Encore so I watched that for a bit, and I forgot how funny some it was (and yes, I know this means there will be thirty people who tell me Tarantin0’s writing is garbage and that I have shitty taste. Piss off. I like what I like.). The scene where they are cleaning brains out of the car cracked me up:
You’re gettin’ ready to blow? I’m a mushroom-cloud-layin’ motherfucker! Every time my fingers touch brain I’m “SUPERFLY T.N.T,” I’m the “GUNS OF NAVARONE.” I’m what Jimmie Walker usta talk about.
I have felt that way. Good stuff.
*** Update ***
I had forgotten how much I like the way the songs on Abbey Road blend together. BTW- any Ben Folds Five fans out there?
BTW- every time I listen to Abbey Road and hear She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, I inevitably think of Joe Cocker’s version, which then reminds me of John Belushi as Joe Cocker on SNL.
Stream of consciousness, anyone? Some insight into how my mind works. Frightening, no?
Andrew
You want this.
This.
Or netflix them.
And definitely this.
Andrew
Sorry. I’m a bastard for not embedding those long links.
John Cole
Thanks. I fixed the links for you.
Chris
It may be cheaper to go with a netflix subscription instead of buying the seasons.
Buy these DVD sets in order:
Battlestar Galactica (2003 Miniseries)
Battlestar Galactica – Season One (2005)
Battlestar Galactica – Season 2.0
Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.5
Battlestar Galactica – Season Three
Battlestar Galactica – Razor
Tom
Do you have the latest version of iTunes? I have a macbook and the latest version and it usually will just pop in all the song names when I put the CD in.
But, I haven’t tried it today.
I always wondered if the tracklist was taken by matching up the song order and length through the Web, or read off the disc by iTunes.
MNPundit
A few things:
Tarantino’s “writing” IS trash, but it’s usually very entertaining trash. So enjoy!
Apparently on Thursday during one fo the Sci-Fi channel movie events they are going to give an 8-minute recap of the series (I don’t think it’s just season 3) titled “What the Frack is going on with BSG?” so that might be cheaper.
Andrew
Definitely cheaper to go with netflix. You could get a year long subscription to netflix for the price of all that BSG. On the other hand, it’s one of the few shows worth that kind of support.
JWeidner
What Chris said. And Season 4 starts up on Friday night on Sci-Fi. I’m really looking forward to it. I thought Hulu also had episodes of the new BSG, but maybe I’m wrong – I know they have episodes of the original series and (gag) BSG 1980.
tBone
It’s possible that your preferences got changed somehow. Go to Edit->Preferences, click the Advanced tab and then the Importing tab, and make sure “Automatically retrieve CD track names from the Internet” is checked.
Billy K
1) iTunes uses a server to match up song names. I think it’s CDDB (gracenote). You can mess it up by blocking ports and such nonsense I don’t fully grok.
2) BSG = teh best. It’s expensive to buy all the DVDs, but after you rent them all you will want to own them. Just start by buying the miniseries (and keep in mind, as great as it is, it gets a LOT better in S1).
3) Tarantino’s writing is shit.
shera
BSG season 4 is actually being streamed on http://www.scifi.com from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday. I wonder if it’s possible to download BSG episodes onto your PC from Netflix.
capelza
Andrew…I agree, BSG IS one of those shows worth showing the support.
And Tarantino’s style is too clever by half, but I still enjoy his films. Watched the Kill Bill films last night with the hub. Part of me was thinking QT was all the bad things people say about him, but then I still had a great evening…
UncommonSense
I loved that scene in Pulp Fiction, too.
But you didn’t get the line quite right.
It goes:
Which really gives it a whole different rhythm, yes?
Punchy
Christ….now we have Krista guest-blogging under Cole’s surname?
David Hunt
You can watch that as a stream on SciFi’s BSG page. However, while it’s hillarious to watch at times, I’m not sure how informative vs inpenetrable (sp?) it would be to someone that hadn’t seen the series. I think you’d get a bare bones rundown of the players and where the third season left off, but I’m sure that it would spoil virtually every major surprise that the series had managed to hit its fans with. Also, I don’t know how many of the jokes wouldnt just fly over the heads of the newbs.
Just my two cents.
tBone
Something else you can try, John – highlight one of the tracks on the CD and then go to Advanced->Get CD Track Names, and see if it will retrieve them that way.
CDDB (the database iTunes uses) isn’t down, btw, at least at the moment – just tried it and my track names came right up in iTunes.
joe
In high school, I had a casette copy of Abbey Road that cut off about seven seconds too soon.
Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl but she doesn’t have a lot to say.
Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl but she changes from day to day.
Wanna tell her that I love her a lot but I’ve gotta get a belly full of wine.
Sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss – chu-CHUNK!
SO frustrating.
tBone
Fixed that for you. Don’t mess with the BSG nerds, frakker.
Breschau
Ben Folds is my favorite artist of all time.
Be sure to check out this video. Then, go here for songs and videos, and here if you’re interested in seeing him live.
phein
My kids bought me the first season of BSG off iTunes for transoceanic flights. Very soothing, and I can plug them into the big screen if I want to.
dave
The What the Frak is going on BSG video is an awesome, funny 8 minute recap of the series thus far.
Not a good idea if you want to see all the originals spoiler free, but it is really well done.
Pulp Fiction is a classic. I even think Jackie Brown is underrated. Obviously Tarantino is in love with his own style, and though Kill Bill & beyond are fun, they are a little too obsessively stylized.
I get the sense he needs someone else in the room to tone him down and tighten it up, and he doesn’t get that from anyone anymore. His iconic status hurts him. Still, he’s got serious writing talent.
Marshall
The medley on the second side of Abbey Road is still my favorite song sequence in all of pop music. People will argue the best Beatles album till kingdom come, but that sequence tips the balance for me. Abbey Road is their best.
Dork
Wow. I didn’t know anyone but Joe Cocker sang that song. Not really the Beatles buff, clearly.
Now, about the Beasties….best trio evah, or bestest?
The Other Steve
I just finished watching 4 seasons of Nip/Tuck. maybe I’ll start on BSG next, although that might be hard to get the girlfriend interested.
The Other Steve
Check netflix… BSG is not available for streaming. Only on DVD.
John Cole
There are two types of people in the world. Those who realize Paul’s Boutique is one of the greatest accomplishments in music in the past three decades, and idiots.
Punchy
What, are you going to shoot me with your phazer, or sting me with some cheap fake red laser, or sic some robot clones on my ass? Which will it be?
I’ll be watching years 1992-2002 Simpsons reruns for the next 10 hours in my casa if you need to find me.
tBone
Unfortunately NBC had a hissy fit over iTunes pricing and pulled everything off, so you can’t get BSG there anymore.
Billy K
Soothing? SOOTHING?! This show is the most abrasive, unsettling thing I’ve ever seen on the screen. (And I can’t stop watching it.)
No, but there’s still lots of places to get it. NBC just doesn’t get paid any more. Fools.
tBone
I’m going to send Edward James Olmos to your house. He’s going to yell math problems from Stand and Deliver into your face until you pee your pants.
Dork
There’s a reason I’ve had this CD stolen–I kid you not–3 different times in college.
I’m on my 4th copy, and it’s scratched to all hizz’ell. Maybe #5 will be the charm.
rawshark
“There’s nothing wrong with my leg I’m just B-Boy limpin'”
Can someone tell me why I have to buy the entire From Dusk Til Dawn soundtrack on iTunes when I only want After Dark (it’s the song Salma Hayek dances to)?
“is your name Michael Diamond?
naw, mine’s Clarence”
bobbob
Pulp Fiction is on my top 10 movie list. Funny stuff, The scene where Jules and Vince are retreiving the case is great. Scary and funny at the same time. Classic.
John Cole
BTw- Did any of you catch Blizzard’s Bard Class/Molten Core console game April Fool’s joke?
The trailer for Molten Core is priceless.
DougJ
I’m assuming this is an April Fool’s joke. That, or a frat boy from UNC has hacked on and is posting as you.
I kind of like their song “Kate”, though, I have to admit.
capelza
Punchy…don’t make go all Kara Thrace on you…I won’t use the phazer, I’ll just kick your ass…yeah, I love Starbuck…
Evinfuilt
I preferred the concept art. Reminded me of some classic games that had great artwork in the manual, then the PoS game loaded up.
Billy K
Real hipsters have it on vinyl.
John Cole
That had me laughing out loud.
calipygian
I believe the quote is, “I’m a mushroom cloud layin’ motherfucker, motherfucker,” which is even funnier because of the repetition of the word “motherfucker”.
DFD
I have something better than Battlestar Galactica for you: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode 820 – Space Mutiny
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8590533394044637016
It has the special effects of Battlestar Galactica (literally) but is 100x funnier.
Big McLargeHuge! AHHHHHhhhhhhhh!

Big fan of Ben Folds. Earlier stuff and later stuff both. I saw him in concert shortly before Ben Folds Five broke up, on the Ben Folds Live tour, on the Songs for Silverman tour, and again about a year and a half ago on tour for Supersunnyspeedgraphic.
Anybody who thinks Ben Folds is just frat boy music hasn’t listened to very much of it (though I am myself a frat boy).
rob!
BSG = best sci-fi show ever, top 10 best TV shows, period.
recent convert rob!
Krista
Don’t do it. Don’t spoil it for yourself. It’s such an awesomely written drama and I would hate for you to just get the (no pun intended) Cole’s Notes version.
And Punchy, cheap red lasers and whatnot are more from the original BSG. This one is mostly good-old-fashioned firepower. Mind you, in this one, you’re also likely to just get thrown out of the airlock.
Shame I didn’t know you wanted to see this, John. We’re going to wait ’till Season 4 is done and over with and then buy the whole box set, so we just sold the miniseries, as well as seasons one and two, on Ebay. At least, I think they all sold. Let me check when I get home, and if we haven’t sold them, I’ll get back to you.
John Cole
I should probably also add I just have a really wide range of music I like. It is nothing for me to listen to Stan Ridgway then switch to Zappa then throw in Les Claypool and before I know it I am listening to Waylon Jennings.
JWeidner
One of the best concerts I saw was the Beasties in the round at the LA Forum. Great seats courtesy of the company I worked for at the time and they just rocked the place. Simply awesome.
jon
The Beastie Boys may be a trio, but they do have a DJ and sometimes a band. Greatest ever? I’d put Husker Du, Minutemen, Nirvana, and a few others in the Great Trios category before the Beasties show up. But I’d have to go with Monk and two bums off the street over most of them.
And does anyone know the link to that great page about The Gimp? He had such a long and illustrious life before appearing in Zed’s basement.
fnordboy
Mean Mr. Mustard – Polythene Pam – She Came In Through the Bathroom Window.
The Pale Scot
Could have swore that last week I heard SCFi say they were going to replay the whole series before the start of the new season
Right now apparently: and you can watch the whole thing on the SiFi website too
the schedule
http://www.scifi.com/schedulebot/index.php3
sorry about the link, too busy
John Cole
BTW- just to piss off some of you, I get the SciFi channel in HD.
The Pale Scot
The only issue you might have with BSG is the technical anomalies, if you can create artificial gravity on your ships your way past using chemical reaction rockets and bullets, maybe used a more Space Odyssey type tech state. But I like my sci-fi hard
Dork
That comment alone should move the cuss-o-meter a few notches.
Billy K
Oh, and BTW John, I have the same cascade of connections when I hear that Beatles song. You are very unique – just like the rest of us.
tBone
You fucking suck.
MNPundit
Didn’t Olmos wander about the Rodney King Riots or something with a bat restoring order?
David Hunt
I’m going to disagree with your typing of the world’s population there, Mr. Cole.
The truth is that there are ten types of of people in the world: Those who understand binary mathematics and those who don’t.
Brachiator
Works better this way. Also,
Q. Why do mathematicians like national parks?
A. Because of the natural logs.

Ben Folds Five is one of my favorite bands. I love Robert Sledge’s fuzz bass – he sounded like a melodic Cliff Burton (Metallica’s 1st bass player). I saw them live any time I got the chance – their shows always had so much energy.
I’ve seen Ben live solo a number of times, too, but those shows just don’t measure up (with maybe one exception, the Ben Folds with a piano tour). BFF needs to have a reunion!!!
Andrew
(spoilers!)
Can someone sic some robot clones on my ass? Pretty please?
Fat Mort Jellyroll
I think some of the best work that Ben Folds has done was actually with William Shatner on the “Has Been” album. An interesting listen.
Cris
Among the many reasons to recommend Radio Paradise is that Bill occasionally plays the entire Abbey Road medley.
Just Some Fuckhead
Yeah, I always pull that out for people when we start talking music. I had to entertain some 20something guests from a foreign company recently and played that while we were on a road trip. They were big Star Trek fans and they really dug Common People.
Desmond
Add me to the ranks of those heartily recommending BSG. It’s my favorite thing on television right now, maybe ever. Makes most other shows look like pansies in comparison.
JenJen
John, I love me some Ben Folds Five. Ever heard Ben’s cover of Dre’s “Bitches Ain’t Shit”? One of my favorites.
Oh and this one…
Well I thought about the Army
Dad said “Son, you’re fuckin’ high”
So I thought, hey there’s a first for everything
So I took my old man’s advice
Three sad semesters, it was only fifteen grand
Spin in bed, I thought about the Army
I dropped out and joined a band instead

GET RID OF ITUNES and get Media Monkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com/). It’s free and it blows itunes away for its upload, download, etc capabilities. It finally allows you to use your IPod as a hard drive as Apple should have done and did not do.
One of these days when you are not watching ITunes will blow away your entire song list as it did to mine. It happened when I connected to another PC with ITunes installed that had only a few songs. ITunes decided to synchronize and it blew away my entire collection. Fortunately I had most of it backed up.
At the very least, if you are keeping ITunes, MAKE A BACKUP.
JR
Ben Folds Five is teh awesome. I’ve got “Whatever and Ever Amen” and “The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Niebuhr” on my iPod, and usually give one of them a listen every week or so on the Metro.
And ditto the flow of “Abbey Road,” but I think the White Album actually flows the best of all of them–even the break in the middle works well.
Ellison, Ellensburg, Ellers, and Lambchop
I like Ben Folds on recordings, but live, he’s at another level. He’s just a great performer. It’s impossible to go to one of his shows and not have a good time. Last time we were third row center for the Songs for Silverman tour.
Good question on best trio of our times — I lean toward the Beasties because of longevity. They just pip Hanson at the wire.
Other great rock/indie trios are The Cribs (bonus points for being 3 brothers, extra bonus points for being Teh Greatness), Menomena, Yo La Tengo, the re-formed Dinosaur Jr., The Wombats, We Are Scientists, The Enemy, and Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club.
Ellison, Ellensburg, Ellers, and Lambchop
As soon as I hit ENTER, the Fratelli’s came on my iTunes (how could I forget them after 10,000 iPod commercials?). Eagerly awaiting this trio’s second release.
Ellison, Ellensburg, Ellers, and Lambchop
Links are cool, too, though I can never remember how many you’re allowed…
Steve
I got “The Takin of Pelham 123” from Netflix two weeks ago. It is still a great film, and an major influence for Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs”. I hightly recommend it, Walter Matthau is great in it.
Ezert
Fuck yeah, Ben Folds is awesome. I somehow kinda doubt frat boys in the year 2008 are listening to Ben Folds. Maybe some were in 1998, but not now.
This was the best Bitches Ain’t Shit video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjNNxnKVEpQ&feature=related
I sort of saw Ben Folds Five back in ’97. hey were playing the side stage at H.O.R.D.E. We didn’t know who they were and cruised right by them. I kick myself for that.
