Ewww…at first I read that as “Corncrap”.

Corporations don’t kill coral, swimmers do.

but who kills the strawmen?

Comcast sucks the big one. Prior to this year Time Warner did, (really the same company anyway) but after the switch to Comcast it actually got worse.
I’ll stick with DSL which, while a bit slower is also a lot cheaper and in 9 years I can count the down time incidents on one hand.
Ninerdave
John, get DSL, I never have downtime. Go with a local company.
Jake
Jimmy crap corn and I don’t care…
Sorry.
Heard on the news last night Maryland has had to fine the shit out of ConCast. Their response to customer complaints is roughly on par with the Dept. of Homeland Security’s response to disasters.
The irony is Maryland gave Comcast the cable monopoly because the previous cable provider sucked real bad. I guess more than one cable network is too much for someone’s tiny brain.

Crap, that last comment from “Ian” was me. I seem to have lost the “Y77” in the reformat.

I’m thinking of voting for BHO for the coattails he’ll be dragging behind him. If he can get youth to the polls and they vote straight Democratic, then all the races will benefit. We have hope of progressive movement with a slate of Democrats, but if HRC can’t deliver the straight ticket vote then we don’t have much hope of undoing GW’s damage quickly. If it’s ever going to be done, it needs to be quick and ruthless.
I don’t have as much confidence in BHO keeping the Whitehouse for two terms. (I keep wanting to call him HBO, and it’s effing me up.)
Jen
Really? You think McCain is going to get better with age?
LiberalTarian
Not McCain, HRC.
myiq2xu
One of the Obama myths is that all the new voters are coming to vote for him.
Yesterday, HRC got more votes than the 2004 Democratic field COMBINED.
LiberalTarian
Assuming McCain doesn’t beat HRC outright.
I don’t know if McCain can get the independent vote he would have gathered in 2000–he did too much sucking up to GW Bush, tarnishing his straight-talker maverick express schtick.
I just don’t think HRC can pull in as many voters. I don’t think it is particularly her fault, she just doesn’t have the charisma BHO has.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
One term will be plenty. 4 years is enough to choke the life out of the anemic mutt that is the Democratic party.
and far more than enough for the Republican party to eat their young, puke it up, eat it again, shit all over the South, pass out from malnutrition and waste way in the trailer park that raised them.
LiberalTarian
I’m fully supporting the Democratic candidate, regardless. Pre-primary I’m not obliged to be married to either of them.
Punchy
Mukasey told Congress today that they allow torture, if it can save a life. Apparently, not the life of the person tortured, however. This, of course, is really strange, since George Bush has been telling us for YEARS that “we do not torture“. Hmmmm…..
Sick fucks….
D-Chance.
Oh, joy. More negotiation is needed on the stimulus package because someone discovered that illegal aliens MIGHT be eligible to receive some of those rebate checks, and we just can’t have that… /rolls eyes

Can someone explain Sullivan’s appeal? AFAICT there’s a lot of linking to Sullivan around here. I don’t think I’ve read Sullivan more then five times since the invasion. He doesn’t seem to be more insightful than [example set:] {Marshall, Greenwald, Teh-Sadly-Noez, Cole/Tim}. War supporter. Kinda creepy about HRC. What’s his upside?
Zifnab
Yeah, John. That’s damn worth mentioning. Look at Hillary’s numbers in Florida. 800k strong. Which Republican candidate pulled that sort of weight? And the Dems weren’t even campaigning.
But blah blah blah Republicans got the bully pulpit blah blah blah Dems are switching parties blah blah blah stupid voters blah blah electoral college blah Al Gore blah blah Magic Economy Pony ftw blah.

Zinfab–today’s favorite.

Nader is considering jumping in the race. If he jumps in the race he could siphon off a small percentage of votes from the far left in and be a factor again in some close states.
I bet he drives some of you left wingers crazy. But follow the link above and see all the great stuff you get for $300.00. I wonder how many people on the right are sending him money and encouraging him to run?
ThymeZone
Comcast: Can it be as bad as Cox Communications?
DSL: Tried it, it was so bad it drove me back to Cox. Nothing but trouble, slow load times, network outages, and zero customer support. Ended up costing the same as cable broadband, but then only if bundled with telephone.
My favorite broadband right now is Verizon Wireless Broadband, which is a tad pricey, but it works all the time, and is completely portable.
Soon, WiMax will replace wired broadband, I hope to God the Omnipotent. Wirelss broadband, cheap and accessible, will be more reliable that wired infrastructure and eliminate the hated “we can schedule a tech to your location between 1 and 4 next Thursday” forever. God’s dominion on earth will be restored when all wired broadband providers have gone out of business and been sent to burn in hell.
LiberalTarian
Lol. Nader. He really did go so far left he found the right, didn’t he?? Bliss is watching Ron Paul do worse to the GOP than Nader did to us. Bwahahahaha.
Tom in Texas
When switching over from Time Warner to Comcast here in Texas, they accidentally cut the wrong line and suspended service to the southeastern coast for over a day. There are constant slowdowns in my service, and I’ve switched out my modem 4 times in the past year. Comcast. Sucks.
Dug Jay
Neither Obama or Hillary look good to me. If you want to support a real liberal, go here to contribute and offer help.

I think that Old Ralph is pretty much out of the running unless GM suddenly brings back the 1961 Corvair.
MJ
LiberalTarian Ron Paul has been more of a spectacle then an actual factor. Nader will be more likely to jump in to the race if Hillary wins the nomination.
UnkyT
Add one to the transcending list. Looks like Obama now transcends his own multiple identities.
Garrigus Carraig
Nader’s annoying. But a race with Nader and Paul would be so awesome. I haven’t watched a debate in years, but I’d watch that. Throw Bloomberg in there, too — NGH. Man, this is the best election year ever. I just wish I didn’t have to live in the country in question.
Delia
Here’s some fun ComCrap/Time-Warner news. TW is going to try out a new plan in Texas charging people by the gigabyte for movie & TV downloads. If it works well for them, they’ll take it national and Comcrap will get in on the act. They all think folks will love paying $30 for a movie download.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/105557
Me, I’ve hated Comcrap and they’re always trying to strangulate my bit torrent, but I’ve been able to stay one step ahead of them and I get really fast downloads when I’ve got it working. But if they pull this crap off, I really don’t see the point at all. I might as well go back to dial-up.

This was an Edwards house. Now it’s a split primary house. Me: Bamalama. Woman: Hill.
My children: Obama. There’s your youth vote.

They’ll be replaced by wireless broadband providers who are just as bad, or worse, unless the Magical 700mhz Android Unity Pony lives up to its promise.
For Comcast customers:
I’m not saying you should do what this lady did. But you totally should.

I didn’t think it would take right-wing pundits long to find things to find nice things to say about McCain – but, damn. Sean Hannity’s callers are openly questioning his sanity for suggesting the GOP ought to “modernize” and shift toward the center.
This is going to be fun.

I just missed his interview with the Newt, unfortunately. Does McCain’s landslide in FLA mean the Draft Newt movement is dead?
PaulW
I haven’t heard that many bad things about BrightHouse, but I haven’t heard many GOOD things about them either. :-/
The campaigns’ pretty much have weeded down to four choices:
Obama/McCain
Obama/Romney
Clinton/McCain
Clinton/Romney
At this point, Clinton/Romney is the one where my choice will be the parachute. McCain over Clinton, Obama over McCain.
There. Wasn’t so hard, was it?
PaulW
My dad went with Mitt in Florida. If there is a Draft Newt movement my dad would be at the head of it.
The Grand Panjandrum
The internets have been down in the Middle East as well. Very suspicious. Especially now that John Cole has moved over to the dark side. I guess it could be a coincidence, but …
That’s a pay-per-view money maker! A few pints, indeed, and no laugh track necessary.
Grumpy Code Monkey
Fed cuts rates again.
Is that all-out panic I’m starting to smell, or should I not have eaten that last bag of Cheetos?
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
Just trying to help.
Nader was a gigantic failure of a human being for running in 2004 because “it’s our constitutional right” to continue to watch Arabs be black-bagged, tortured, and killed.
What a fucking self-centered asshole.
Caidence (fmr. Chris)
Panic has been in the air for weeks now. If you couldn’t smell this, its time to see an ENT doctor or an allergist.
Dreggas
yeah but even after the recount she didn’t have any delegates.

Not to worry Grumpy, that’s just a wee bit of stench from the shit-trail Rudy left in his wake. Should clear up by morning.

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 – For what it’s worth, and that may not be much:
Jake
Someone help me out. My understanding was the fed cuts the rates for banks. This cut is supposed to trickle down to the consumer because the banks will say “Hey, we’ve got more borrowing power, so we’ll pass it on to the customer.”
In other words, a rate cut for the banks does not automatically = cut on the credit cards interest rates.
Yes? No?
Grumpy Code Monkey
There’s panic, and then there’s panic. Last week’s cut seemed to originate from a semi-rational place, but this one feels like it came straight from the lizard part of the brain. If that makes any sense. Which it probably doesn’t.
Punchy
Who’s the “his” in this statement? Hannity, or McCant?
caustics
Hanninty. Sorry, I have a fever too.
myiq2xu
The opposite of sanity is Hannity.
Zifnab
I’m lazy. Someone feel free to spruce up the Unity Pony.

Just out of sheer curiousity, how fast IS the DSL where you guys are? I’ve often heard it said that internet access in the US is surprisingly shit, but wasn’t sure if that was just an urban legend.
For comparative purposes, I’m on DSL, with a speed of 100Mb/s.
Emma Anne
Former Edwards house here, too. Sigh. Now I have to decide who to caucus for by next Tuesday. DH will be at DD’s orchestra concert, so he doesn’t have to decide.
Any of our candidates will kick the butts of any of their candidates this year. Not a consideration. McCain? Hah. He’s a hundred years old, sickly, and wants to stay in Iraq for a hundred years. He’ll be envying Dole’s performance. And he’s the Repubs *best* hope.
So, I get to vote for the person who will make the best president. Cool.
Zifnab

Well, it varies according to where you are. Their twisted pair is famous for sucking performance away as the miles add up (more so than cable’s coax does).
And it depends on what service level you buy.
But ultimately, it depends on what you get at the moment when you measure it.
I was getting sub-100mbps speeds, and worse. My cable modem gives me measured 1-3mbs.
Your report of 100mbps on DSl probably meant 100kbs, since 100mbs speed is not going to be available at the residential level anywhere in the world.
All of these speeds are theoretical of course, and not what you will experience in real life.
Emma Anne
I’ll wait to see how the wikipedia page turns out.
Psycheout
With Ralph Nader in the race, the GOP will win for sure. Republicans should be sending money and volunteering free legal services. He’s helped us before, he can again.
And I love this:
What a kook. What an ego! Run, Ralph, Run!
Krista
You’re probably right, TZ. It says right on my connection, “100 Mbps”, but when I look up my product online, I see this:
So I don’t know what the hell my speed is. I was just curious as to how things compared.
ThymeZone
That’s your Windows connection’s maximum speed, no doubt. Has nothing to do with what is actually happening at the connection though.
It’s like saying that my car is a 100 mph car because the speedometer goes that high and the motor will get me to that speed. But my real average speed every day is probably in the 20’s.
Krista
Ah, I see. Makes sense. Thanks!
By the way, I owe you a debt. After seeing you waxing poetic on brussels sprouts, I decided to give them a try. I can’t believe I went my whole life without eating them!
ThymeZone
Hey, glad to hear it! I love the things. Easy to prepare and yummy.
Krista
Yep…cooked em with a smidge of bacon and some garlic. Good times.

Seems like a nice place to drop this,
Readers, refer to post 9483.
It was a censored response as usual. The following was blocked by John as many have been.
Hi John,
It is so nice of you to display such kindness. It also appears you have played the Clinton game on me. I save every post you block(as I have told you this), you now post them only to portray fairness. You seek only those who agree with you, never a different thought process. I rag you because it’s easy. I was originally under the assumtion that at least a few of your readers were ex-military(or had at least a few days in the mess hall). It has become quite apparent they are not.
If anyone of them were combat arms they could decipher my non-english writing. That is what I find quite funny, I’m illiterate, but it is your readers who have no idea of what being a soldier is all about. John you play along, to appease them.
I must go to Home Depot and buy some good sniffing glue.
Michael D.
No you are not a fag, you are gay. That’s okay with me, I just don’t agree with many of your points of view.
Again
Thnx John,
In an attempt to save your own ass and from keeping me from having to post the comments in an open post.
tBone
I have friends who are/were combat arms, and none of them mentioned that becoming fluent in Gibberish was part of their MOS. Must be one of those things they don’t feel comfortable sharing with civvie pukes.
Conservatively Liberal
There is some news that will be hot off the press in the morning! The NYT will have a four page spread about Bill Clinton helping a guy get uranium contracts with Kazakhstan, and Clinton getting over $100,000,000.00 for his presidential library.
They are talking about it over at The Great Orange Satan, and if this is true it could mean the end of Hillary’s campaign.
If indeed this is true, I would not really be surprised. Bill and Hill seem to be two people who are out for themselves, and this would be consistent with that.
Get the popcorn ready, this may get interesting soon.
