Checking in quickly before the wife catches me using the computer. Fortunately nothing interesting has happened since I left*.
For a fun diversion, see if you can identify the hummingbird species in this pic. Bonus points for anybody who can guess more or less where I am.
(*) Except for that Gonzales thing. If we have a pool going, chalk me up for a Harriet Miers recess appointment.

Oooh! Long time lurker here. Better pic please. I’m going to go with a male Calliope feeding on Indian paintbrush. If I’m correct, that should put you more or less in my backyard in Montana. If not there….nope I just checked….then you absolutely have to be in Washington state.
Wilfred
Trochilus polytmus? Caribbean?
Pelikan
TimF, good job on the Brain Candy catch, glad someone else caught it. I used to have a roomate who watched that one almost every month. As a result, I think I’ve seen that movie about 20 times. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner to issue you your no-prize!
Now “Get out of my cab you stupid slinky whore!”
The Other Steve
I miss the mountains. Haven’t been out west since 1995. Was planning this year, but job stuff got in the way. Next year for sure!

A gay hummingbird?
A Ruby-throat, Black-chin or Calliope. Would be nice if we could see any part of the throat.
So when is this mysterious announcement you alluded to last week?
John S.
My mother had a saying:
“Life is short, life is shit and soon it will be over.”
It sounds better in the original Croatian.

If it’s a buff (green throat) you’re way down at the tip of Texas. If it’s a ruby throat you could be hiding under my porch, down in Florida, up in Maine any where east of the Mississippi or even in Canukistan. If it’s black chinned you’re somewhere out west. The white tail tip makes me think black chin, or maybe a female ruby.
Yes, I do have an NAS bird guide. Wanna make something of it?
Chris Johnson
Oh man, that would be funny if it wasn’t all too plausible. I’m not sure whether it would be a good thing or not, because on the one hand dismantling the government will lead to a sensible one eventually replacing it, and on the other hand what if the sensible one never arises?
Jill
Mt. Desert Island, Maine?
ThymeZone
A ruby throat, somewhere within 75 miles of the Mexican border.
If you were in Arizona, I’d say Patagonia. Bird watcher’s paradise.
Of course we have rub throats right here in Phoenix but nobody in their right mind comes here on vacation in August.
Patagonia (AZ) on the other hand is much cooler.

In a field. Pay up.
Ned R.
Not only that, he’s a man out standing in it.

Enjoy your vacation, Tim. I took one myself just a few weeks back, and even though I didn’t really do anything “special,” it was terrific. (made more special by the fact that my daughter (now 22) got up every day my wife and I slept late and went to work!).
I believe I’m approaching that time in my life where I can become a burden to my children (child).
In any case, anywhere with hummingbirds is better than work.
Mike S
Would that be your back yard??
stickler
I’ll bite. It’s just west of Walla Walla. Or just north of Pe Ell. Or … maybe, Humptulips. Too verdant to be Inchelium, but could be Usk. Definitely not Moses Lake.
Stooleo
Don’t know where you are but I,m thinking a Rufus. Hey MTDEM, you a Bobcat or a Grizzly fan? Man, I miss Montana…
Perry Como
It’s a swallow and you’re vacationing in an airport bathroom.
demimondian
I’m thinking the Channeled Scablands — perhaps near Sun Lake?
ThymeZone
Ba-bing! Henny Youngman, folks, here all week.

OT:
Just watched Charlie Rose on TV. Had the Beasties. Mike Diamond? Jesus. The guy’s got a nest big enough to house a teradactyl on his noggin. When did he decide to grow this Moochie Norris?

I’d say you’re in an area North, East, West or South of Baghdad.
What do I win?
Dave
Looks like a ruby throat (of course I can’t see the throat). Looks like the dunes out by the San Francisco Presidio.
Leader Desslok
Stay classy, San Diego.
Mr.Mom
That is a female ruby-throat and since their range is so huge you could be anywhere. But the wildflowers say you are not in the North east….
Lynn Sutherland
It probably isn’t a Ruby Throated hummer because they are found only rarely in the west and it does look like there is an abundance of Indian Paintbrush in your photo–that happens more in the Rockies than on the Canadian Shield.
But it is very difficult to id a hummer without being able to see the color of his gorget. So I’ll hazard a guess–you’re in Durango, CO looking at a Broad-tailed hummer, seen while hiking in the San Juans.
whippoorwill
Wild guess, Broadtail in Coloradee

I swear i just now read your post Lynn. I am not and have never been a post stealer, in or out of the bathroom.

Lynn Sutherland,
You win by ten billion points. Also, thanks for (tentatively) ID’ing the hummer.
