We’re in the midst of a cold snap. It’s a frigid 52 out now and supposed to get to 48. Brrr.
I’d be interested to see your take on the NYT story on domestic spying that’s been going on since 2002.
Meth Mouth
Call Freddy, he’ll set you up but it won’t be cheap.

Having done the penguin walk over snow and ice for the past two days, I’d be more than happy to FedEx the entire lot to you.

Being a few hours to the east of you John, we’ve got enough snow, rain, sleet, and freezing rain to last us for a while. I don’t mind snow, but I do mind the latter two, especially when I have to drive on the streets with people not used to driving in it.
Angry Engineer
I know what you mean – here in Michigan, we keep on getting forecasts like “6-8 inches overnight with considerable blowing and drifting”, and I wake up the next morning to find we only received a dusting. Bah.

Mike S domestic spying? Violation of our basic constitutional rights? Please, we have mischievous cats and the absence of snow to talk about not an out of control criminal president.

Slide,
When it rains, it pours. Or something.

Jane Finch – I feel your pain, hon. We got whomped on Wednesday, and are supposed to get more this weekend. So much for my cute high-heeled leather boots. I’ve had to drag out the ugly old salt-stained moon boots instead.

I will chime in with tales of inclimate weather. Phoenix may plunge into the 30s tonight. That’s after a grueling day of struggling with highs around 70 degrees.
Save me from this Arctic weather!

Eh! No snow; just freezing rain. And not bad enough to skip work either.
I do like the idea of Friday snowstorms though.

We’ve gotten about 10 inches in the past couple of weeks here in Iowa, and trust me, after shoveling for the 4th time in a week it gets old fast.

Dear Mr. Cole:
It has snowed some 10 or so inches here in the past 15 hours or less, and, although tapering off, there is more to come. Anyone, anywhere, at any time, who wishes for snow is an idiot for whom Dante reserves a special cirlce in Hell, where they suffer the eternal torments of endless shoveling and dragging button-nosed, appled-cheeked youngsters up a hill of ever-increasing length. Snow, rather like old age, may be necessary and natural but the difficulties which attend either’s onset far outweigh their putative benefits: whitened, brightened “Christmassy” views and possession of “wisdom” respectively, that to desire either suggests a serious mental derangement. Being a sensible person, I do not possess an auto and was, thus, saved the horrors that awaited the foolhardy as they set forth on the morning commute. However, needs must and out the house went I, a trip of 20 mins via shank’s mare required a trudge of nearly an hr. In addition, the inclimate weather brings out or rather reenforces the ingrained stupidity of motorists, who steadfastly refuse to clean the snow from their windows, thus restricting seriously their view, slow down, thus ignoring reality, and generally behaving like, well, motorists: stupid, selfish, and life-threatening morons.

In Philly we don’t get snow, we get slush. So hush up will ya?
Mr.Ortiz
I’m in a similar situation. I was really looking forward to the transit strike in New York today.
Krista
It’s 5 degrees fahrenheit here right now. With all due respect , bite me.
Lovingly,
Krista

I am not budging. I like snow.
Krista
t. jasper parnell: that was beautiful.
I will confess however, to enjoying snowshoeing, which I suppose cannot be done without snow.
However, as many of us here have pointed out, there can definitely be way too much of a good thing.

Mr. Cole:
As someone once pointed out in a different context, stubornly sticking to one’s guns is a virtue only if one is correct. Being correct requires more than the reassertion of an inclination, particularly if reason and experience show that the thing for which one inclines brings with it more misery and danger than joy unfolding. In short, why do you adore snow?
Ms. Krista:
I agree that well organized romps through the wilds on snow-shoes, skies, or properly outfitted bicycles can be a real pleasure, but for every-day existence snow is a bane and to hope for a bane is to too silly for words.

mutterings
Aw com’n Grinches. Standing at the window, coffee in hand, admiring the freshly snow covered landscape is one of lifes small treasures. One should always allow themselves at least 15 minutes to savor beauty.
That said – there is still some fairly disguting gray stuff, from two weeks ago, piled aound in my neighborhood I can send to John to safisfy his yearning – DHL do you think?
Jody
Just on the other side of the mountains (Blacksburg, Roanoke, Lynchburg), we’ve gotten quite a bit of snow and ice. Now the big 12 inch storm didn’t pan out for us, but we still got a few inches and we got a couple ice storms this week.
As to why like snow? It’s fun to play in. Some people pay good money to go play in snow (they call it a ski trip). If we can get the snow for free, all the better.
Now as to the too much of a good thing criticism – you might as well tell someone who likes the beach that too much sun will kill a person. Obviously moderation is a key and it seems a stretch to damn John for the excesses when he has yet to receive any. I mean, really, this sounds to me as equivalent to a parent telling a child the following:
“No candy for you – if you’re force fed 10 pounds of it, it’ll bust your gut open. Therefore, it’s wrong for you to want a single candy bar.”
Krista
Jody – good point. Although, a better analogy would be that those of us who are tired of snow, are akin to having been force fed 10 lbs. of candy, feel sick, and when we see another kid eyeing candy, say “Why the hell would you want that stuff?”
Honestly, I think I could handle the snow, and even the cold (as long as it’s not too windy) okay if it wasn’t for the wretched, wretched dark. Sunset will be at 4:35pm today. That’s just too damned early.
Steve S
I like snow too.
Fortunately I live in Minnesota where most years it does snow.

Its too early in the season for me to hate snow.
The hating part comes along sometime in February when the novelty has worn off.
In the meantime, if its going to snow, you might as well enjoy it…preferably at midnight after downing a bottle of scotch.
Magical.
Krista
That’s not snow, that’s “floaters” in front of your eyes caused by alcohol-induced damage to your optic nerves.

SNOW? Give me a break.
There hasn’t been good snow since the 1970’s.
WHY? It’s called automotive POLLUTION.
If you want snow you must first get rid of the gas and diesel autos and trucks and go to the hydrogen powered autos and trucks.
There is no other choice.

Jody:
It is true that many, Krista for example, enjoy the out of doors when it is blanketed with a thick layer of snow. I myself enjoy a nice stroll, web-footed or not, in the snow. I used to cross country and downhill and so on. However, the question posed was to Mr. Cole.
Remember, he prefers to take his exercise indoors on somekind of a recumbent device; he owns a cat named Tunck (side note is this some kind of a homage to Ralph Wiggums?); he lives in an large urban agglomoration, in which, in must be noted, someone above insisted the snow ought be understood as “slush.” Mr. Cole’s demand was for snow where he is and not where he might go to enjoy some salutory and pleasant outdoor wintertime exercise. In large urban agglomorations snow is a hinderance, a danger, and a serious pain in the neck.
Given these facts, and I believe each and every statement above to be a fact of the matter, why does Mr. Cole wish for snow? So that he an Tunck might frolic in the slush? So that the light filtering through his windows and naturally illuminating his solitary, sedentary pedalling might be white and wintery? So that a car might slide into his house and thus prevent his labors both necessary and salutory in the service of enlightening the youth of today, who, as we all know, will be the leaders of tomorrow?
I repeat, in no uncertain terms, undismayed and unpersuaded by your appreciation of winter, my inquiry: Why does Mr. Cole wish for snow. Quite frankly, his refusal to denominate the cause of his desire leads me to think that perhaps he has no reason and sticks stubbornly to his guns because he thinks that stubbornly sticking to one’s guns is a virtue, which I assure it is not. Gun sticking becomes a virture of sorts if it arises from some rational, reasonable desire, goal, aim, or furthers the expansion and disemination of the or at least a truth.
Luther, for example, allegedly said there he stood as he could do no other, convinced, as he claimed to be, by his conscience and right reason that the Church had been befouled by lies, half-truths, and general corruption. Does Mr. Cole stick to his guns for similar reasons?

OK, I complained above about receiving only a “dusting”. Well, what looked to be a couple of inches of light snow was really just covering up some of the densest slushy stuff I’ve ever had to move, and that was sitting on top of ice. I got my Kubota stuck three times while clearing the driveway, once badly enough to require yanking it out with my truck. That sucked. Oh well – it beats 45 degrees and raining, which is not good weather for doing anything outside.
At least things aren’t as bad for me as they are for whomever depositing his or her car in the neighbor’s field – they managed to get a good 75 ft off the road before plowing to a halt. I’m not sure I could have gotten that far off the road had I been trying, especially considering the 5′-deep ditch that had to be crossed. Just a guess, but the driver may have been under an influence of some sort.
