If you take the threat of radical Islamist terrorism seriously (who doesn’t?), then the movie “Dirty War” will scare the living hell out of you.
The movie is, according to the website, fiction that was “based on factual research by BBC Current Affairs.” I watched it last night, and man, does it present some frightening scenarios, as well as really capturing the chaos should a dirty bomb be set off in a metropolitan area.
I understand that there is some discussion about whether dirty bombs are possible- I would choose to err on the side of caution. After watching this movie, I have some real questions about the preparedness of the Department of Homeland Security. Can we ever really be prepared?

i saw a nuclear physicist interviewed about dirty bombs. he said that to fulfill predictions in the press about their negative effects it would require, at minimum:
a) everyone to stand still for 100 years.
b) noone to clean anything.

“Deep Impact” was also based on pretty good science (at least by hollywood standards), as was the “Supervolcano” movie last night on the Discovery Channel. Both are pretty terrifying possibilities, but are pretty unlikely (in our lifetimes – they are probably inevitable over geologic spans.)

“Can we ever really be prepared?”
The answer to that is a resounding no. No matter how strong we make the executive branch and its police powers, we will NEVER be able to prevent all terrorism. No matter how well prepared we are or become, there will always be something that will slip through the cracks. At some point we just have to accept the fact that a possibly scary event might just happen, though you’ll probably be struck by lightning multiple times before that happens.
Its time for the US to strap on a backbone and accept the fact that sometimes bad things happen. We can try to prevent them from happening, but it will still happen.

Broadcast a couple of months ago down here ’round Denver. Great stuff, and extremely realistic in many ways, so far as I could tell. I carefully made many notes to blog upon (as well as taping it), all of which are sitting in a To Get To It file, which at this point probably means never.

Gee, why don’t we go after Osama bin Laden? I hear he’s back at the family’s palace in Saudi Arabia. That’s where he keeps the gold lame robe he uses for pre-election tapes.
Or maybe check cargo coming into the US. Or maybe buy up the loose nukes floating around the former Soviet Union.
