The Democrats have whipped themselves and the press into such a frenzy about this faux scandal about Bush being a deserter that they must have missed this:
Halliburton, the giant US energy group once run by Vice-President Dick Cheney, has agreed to pay back $27.4m (
Oliver
Oh, you mean they actually bid on a project as opposed to getting it thanks to friendly connections? Surprise, surprise.
John Cole
Just like they bid on the LOGPAC they currently have with our ARMY. Are you trying to prove how little you know?
Jason
Hm, didn’t the previous administration use the same company? Hm…
Oliver
I’m talking about their no-bid contracts, as well as the $27 large they overcharged. Not to mention doing business with rogue states.
JohnO
So Oliver, I’m assuming you are no longer buying GE light bulbs and appliances. Or is your outrage only directed at companies formally affiliated with the current administration?
Matthew Stinson
Even better, JohnO, I’m sure that Oliver thinks that NBC is tainted by GE’s connections to rogue states. That Tom Brokaw is an obvious tool of Assad.
Jeff
After ten years of assaults from the right, it’s nice to finally be on the offensive. A quick scan down the page and I see you’re scrambling to beat back the various charges Dems are making. Sucks, don’t it?
You can deride them (us) as the “asshole left,” but when you’re on their message, you’re not on yours. I know this because Dems haven’t been on message for years. Say what you will about our various lame charges (which aren’t nearly as lame as trying to oust a president for lying about a blowjob), but Bush is in big trouble. Expect to play defense from here on out.

Haliburton’s “romance” with the USDoD goes way back, before even Clinton.
Kellogg, Root & Brown, one of Halliburton’s subsidiaries, caught all kinds of political flak when it was discovered that the then First Lady was a major stock holder.
Do the name Lady Bird Johnson strike a familiar note?
HH
Speaking of lame charges… show me where “lying about blowjob” is on the official Impeachment charges.

Jeff:
Sobering thought for you: For all that the Dems were playing defense, Bill Clinton was reelected in ’96.
And somehow, Nancy Pelosi does not seem anywhere near as effective as Newt Gingrich was, in retaking the House. Or do you think Terry McAuliffe has a secret plan to retake the Congress, having done so well in ’00 and ’02 to deepen the GOP’s control?
Jason
Er, so where was the outrage against Haliburton under the previous administration? This current events ‘issue’ smacks of political opportunism. Try not to change the subject if you respond…
Jeff
And somehow, Nancy Pelosi does not seem anywhere near as effective as Newt Gingrich was, in retaking the House.
Yeah, Newt–that worked out really well. But of course your larger point is right. A year from now Dems will hold the White House–but precious little else. It’s going to be a very long time before Dems find equal footing.
Mark
In 1997 I was a civilian army employee deployed to Taszar, Hungary. While there I ate Haliburton’s Brown and Root food, shopped in BnR’s PX tent, unrinated in BnR toilets, and if I hadn’t been lucky enough to be authorized a rental car I would have been sleeping in a BnR tent instead of a hotel room.
Which Clinton official was on the take for that contract?
:)

I’m still mystified as to why Oliver still maintains an appearance of ignorance regarding the nature of the KB&R contract. Especially considering it’s been explained more than once.
Once ought to be enough, shouldn’t it? And you wonder why John’s a little annoyed at having to do it yet again.
