I need help. I need instructins on how to remove internet explorer. I have some virus/spyware which is notdetected by Norton, McAfee, or Spybot, yet it is on my IE. One of the problems is that it inserts hyperlinks into my web posts- most notably, words like jobs or flowers, etc.
Help. I am using Mozilla Firebird, but for some reason not all the buttons in MT show up when I use that.

download the scanner. Then the scanner will lead you to a website that will tell you how to remove the spyware. This could get nasty.
I’m a professional computer geek, and I spend hours doing this. The best way of doing it is by hand. If you have lots of trouble, lemme know.

I’m a neophyte when it comes to tinkering. When I have a problem I go to Spyware Warrior.
They have lots of info and some excellent links on the right side.
You’ll probably get excellent help and advice but perhaps some of your readers can use the info.

If you can live without your computer for a couple days, ship it to me and I’ll make it all better. ;) Otherwise, it just might be easier and less time consuming to reformat and reinstall.

One other suggestion — complain to the folks who write MT. If they’re using some sort of MSIE-only code, that’s kind of lousy.

I think you have CoolWWWSearch. SpyBot – after having been updated – should be able to find it and delete it. Otherwise, search for a trustworthy removal tool.

Google the words windows 98 lite. This little freeware program disables the restrictions on uninstalling IE.

If you go to someone else’s site, do you also see those extra links? Or do you mean it physically inserts links into your posts (which you can see as a href in your edit page)?
If the former:

adaware will do it if spybot doesn’t.
If the latter, mail me.

From everything I’ve read and heard over the last five years, plus a nasty personal experience, the one thing you never want to do is try to remove IE from Windows. You might as well back up your data, wipe your hard drive, reinstall everything and be done with it.
If there’s anyway to banish the trojan or whatever, do that instead. You might do a global search for *.js and see if there’s some rogue code deposited somewhere.

John: Don’t log into MT through Firebird. Get Zempt instead (www.zempt.com). Then you go into Firebird purely to do site maintenance like template updates.
The one downside to Zempt is that it doesn’t handle true typographic characters. So lots of times I’ll paste in quoted text and the upload will error out. Then I have to delete all the apostrophes and quote marks from the quoted text and replace them with straight up-and-down keyboard characters. But it beats hell out of using MT’s own web interface. You never lose a post from a bad rebuild, you can’t accidentally replace your posting window by clicking on a necessary link. It’ll even insert blockquote tags, though via menu rather than toolbar.
I can’t recommend it highly enough. Among Zempt, Firebird and Opera, you’ll probably never need to open IE again.
