I agree that Bill Bennett’s drug policy ideas are dumb. However, I can’t help but feel sad to see the vilification of a man I was brought up to respect. I feel sorry for him. It’s kind of like the day I realized that my parents were humans who made mistakes.
There is nothing illegal about him gambling, it’s just sad to see Bennett in such a pathetic light.

I just get tired of moralizing, pompous blowhards. He writes the book of virtues- and then it turns out he is a compulsive gambler.
How many of your friends are locked up in jails because of policies this loudmouth has promoted?
Lee
None of my friends are locked up in jail. There’s a whole world of people out there who don’t do dope.
John Cole
I am glad for you, Lee. However, there is a whgole world of people out there who do do dope, and felony records and imprisonment help them not at all.
Lee
Can’t do the time, don’t do the crime. The world doesn’t owe you help. You break the law, you get punished.

Prohibition laws are stupid. If I ran America, I would legalize marijuana. I know one person who has been to prison for a couple of years for selling a LOT of cocaine. I think he deserved to go to jail for at least a short time.
On a completely different topic, Bennett is not evil. I once respected him for his strength (though sometimes wrong); so it’s particularly pathetic to see that he’s weak.
HH
He actually edited the Book of Virtues, none of that was his stuff.
HH
And Bob Bennett’s the guy Bubba refused to pay completely after he saved his presidential hide.
Andrew Lazarus
HH, while we’re on the subject: adulterous blowjobs are legal in most of the USA, so what was all the stuff about Clinton being immoral. What would you think about BB if he stopped gambling, criticized gambling as immoral, and spent $8MM on legal Nevada whores?
It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy.

Lee, the whole point is that dope shouldn’t be illegal and that it is moralizing blowholes like Bennett that have made it so.

***Lee, the whole point is that dope shouldn’t be illegal and that it is moralizing blowholes like Bennett that have made it so.***
Actually, it is the PEOPLE who have made it so. It’s quite easy to vote in legislators who’ll legalize the substances in the state or vote on referendums that legalize them, or vote for national candidates who’ll legalize various drugs.
That hasn’t happened because the PEOPLE haven’t decided that it should be.
Yet.
That’s our system. Bennett is simply a pundit/author/speaker. Let’s not grant too much power to someone with zero, other than the power to influence (and if it were that strong, we’d be referring to Bob Dole’s tenure as Prez, wouldn’t we?)
John Cole
Ricky- I think you are underestimating the effect that Bennett had as Drug Czar.
Ricky
John, you’re right.
But, he hasn’t been drug czar for quite some time & we’ve had both parties in power and a huge turnover since then. If the people didn’t want drugs banned, they’d have voted differently.
And I speak as someone who still can’t understand why MJ is illegal for someone with glaucoma, yet they can drink some Jack until they pass out and it’s hunky-dory.
I favor decriminalization of MJ, but let’s face facts….the people don’t want it legalized. Yet.
