Disgraceful Outcome

Talkleft points to another disgraceful turn of events in the war on your neighbors:

We are very saddened tonight by the news of the conviction of author and medical marijuana activist Ed Rosenthal in San Francisco. He will be sentenced Tuesday to a mandatory minimum ten year sentence. The maximum sentence is life.

Atrios notes this unbelievable but probably entirely accurate report of document shredding at the INS:

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30 Tens of thousands of pieces of mail come into the huge Immigration and Naturalization Service data processing center in Laguna Niguel, Calif., every day, and as at so many government agencies, it tends to pile up. One manager there had a system to get rid of the vexing backlog, federal officials say. This week the manager was charged with illegally shredding as many as 90,000 documents.

Among the destroyed papers, federal officials charged, were American and foreign passports, applications for asylum, birth certificates and other documents supporting applications for citizenship, visas and work permits.

The manager, Dawn Randall, 24, was indicted late Wednesday by a federal grand jury, along with a supervisor working under her, Leonel Salazar, 34. They are accused of ordering low-level workers to destroy thousands of documents from last February to April to reduce a growing backlog of unprocessed paperwork.

GOP Offers to Fund Mosely-Braun’s Presidential Bid

(2003-01-29) — The Republican National Committee (RNC) today offered to fully fund former Illinois Sen. Carol Mosely-Braun’s run for the 2004 Democrat presidential nomination. Ms. Mosely-Braun said she’s headed to Iowa to test the waters for such an effort.

Dumb as a Sack of Hammers

Nelson Mandela speaks his mind:

Former South African president Nelson Mandela has slammed the U.S. stance on Iraq, saying that “one power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust.”

Speaking at the International Women’s Forum, Mandela said “if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America.”

Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq “because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil.” In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports.

Not content to be merely stupid, Mandela wades into some race-baiting:

Receiving applause for his comments, Mandela said Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are “undermining” past work of the United Nations.

“They do not care. Is it because the secretary-general of the United Nations is now a black man?” said Mandela, referring to Kofi Annan, who is from Ghana.

*** Update ***

Alex Knapp speaks.

John Hawkins at Right Wing News has some comments:

I bet Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton must be kicking themselves right now for not already playing this angle. I can just hear Jackson now…

Lawrence Simon show us some ‘New Math:’

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to practice my Mandela Math:

Seven minus three is… THE UNITED STATES IS EVIL!

Damian Penny begs:

Please tell me this is some kind of mistake. Robert Mugabe said this, not Nelson Mandela, right? Yeah, that’s gotta be it…

Sorry, Damian.

Jay Caruso pitches in.

Rachel Lucas unloads:

Now, if you take Nelson Mandela seriously – can you please explain to me the correlation between the Holocaust caused by the Nazis and whatever it is that the United States is doing right now? Go ahead, give it your best shot. I won’t hold my breath in anticipation.

Some days I just can’t stand humanity. The fact that Mandela was applauded for saying these things makes my skin crawl. Who are these people and why do they listen to such things and cheer? Are they just misguided or are they so intent on cheering for anything said against the U.S. that it doesn’t even matter to them how accurate or reasonable those things are?

The Opinion Journal states:

It pains us to criticize Nelson Mandela, who was once a great man. But because people still take his words seriously–Reuters uses no scare quotes when it calls him “a towering statesman respected the world over”–we must reluctantly point out that in his old age Mandela has turned doddering and incoherent.

Josh Martin thinks Mandela has lost his mind, while the Junkyard Blog wonder when mainstream Democrats will start trumpeting this line.

Mandela, the gift that keeps on giving.

Tapped and Atrios have no comment, but Kos apparently thinks Mandela’s comments are just swell. Is this really Kos, or is Billmon posting without a tagline?

TAPPED needs a Mirror

From Tapped:

Outrage is, of course, the stock-in-trade of your average conservative journalist on campus — their own outrage at everything, and their wish to outrage everyone else. How tedious.

They should read their own site and then check their links list if they want a lesson in continuous and ridiculous outrage. This from the people who linked to this bile. When not writing about the SOTU, Mr. Ehrenstein has enlightened thoughts about race:

“On Friday, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said that while race-neutral practices are “preferable,” race can be used as “one factor among others” to achieve the goal of racial diversity on campus.”

Then she put the handkerchief back on her head and proceeded to brush-scrub the White House floors. But seriously folks —

“In the briefs, the Bush administration did not address the question of whether race could ever be considered a factor in making admissions decisions.”

Meaning that it’s considered a factor.

One must either be white or turn on one’s own race in slavish support of whites.

Deep thinking from the fringe.
