A couple days ago, the South Dakota House adopted a resolution that basically asks the Supreme Court to reverse Roe v. Wade, pretty please with a cherry on top.
Seriously.
We’re three weeks in to this legislative session, and South Dakota is kicking things off with pointless resolutions designed to make sure everyone knows that South Dakota really hates abortion rights.
As if we didn’t already know.

@Yutsano: I’m guessing it’s to fuck with those who have been endlessly going on about ABL linking back to her blog.
At least I hope it is!

Nah, she’s just trolling the “ABL just links to her blog ARGLE BARGLE BARF” assholes.

This pisses me off no end. As someone who terminated a pregnancy in the second term because the baby was diagnosed with anencephaly, I am sickened by what is happening. I read the other day that the one and only abortion provider in Mississippi is likely to close because they can’t meet the regulations the state legislature has slapped on them. The doctors have to have admitting privileges at one of the local hospitals, which with most of them being religiously affiliated have turned the doctors down. The deadline is looming and unless the courts intervene, the clinic will have to close, leaving Mississippi women with little recourse.
The democrats have got to start taking back the state legislatures. The Republicans are enacting batshit legislation to protect the objectives of a crazy minority and they’re entrenching their positions. It’s frustrating as hell, but I’m hoping people will start waking up and say enough!

you gotta make this happen.

This style of post title just ensures that the comments will be mostly about the title and the linking or not to the other blog. And the subject, which is pretty damned important, gets mostly ignored.
@tokyo ex-pat:
I’m sorry you had to make that difficult decision and I’m so glad you had the option to make it and that safe and legal abortions were available for you.
Sadly, I think it’s going to take back alley abortions killing young, white women (preferably blonde), followed by sad and angry white parents on Katie Couric’s talk show and The View to wake people up. Until then, the Christian Taliban will just keep on doing what they’re doing.

@Violet:
I wouldn’t worry too much – that crazy resolution was just posturing with no legal significance – though it’s worth noting that 10 of 17 Democrats voted for it.
Roe vs. Wade is not getting overturned anytime soon. Justice Roberts has said “Roe is the settled law of the land”, and this is relevant:
So while Republicans at the state level continue to introduce “pro-life” legislation to exert control over women, public opinion is going in the opposite direction.

@tokyo ex-pat:
Amen. You have to give those South Dakota Republican politicians their due though: they are stubborn bastards who stick to their wacko beliefs, no matter what the public thinks.
SD voters rejected a near total ban on abortion (56%/44%) in 2006, and again in 2008 (55%/45%), but the fuckers still keep pushing their anti-choice legislation! I guess they must have the ballot boxes rigged somehow, because they clearly don’t give a shit about what the voters think.

It is the ALEC bought legislature, which is why the goobers are also keen the undo the 17th amendment, so they can provide the Senate on a silver platter.

@Mandalay:
Except public opinion matters little when the legislators make it impossible to get your legal, safe, abortion. When you have entire states with no abortion providers, when you have to fly in secret providers because of the stranglehold right-to-lifers have on the local government-Roe Vs Wade is not the law of the land.
