The couple who sold Barack Obama his Chicago home said the Illinois senator’s $1.65 million bid ``was the best offer’’ and they didn’t cut their asking price because a campaign donor bought their adjacent land, according to e- mails between Obama’s presidential campaign and the seller.The Illinois senator has said he made a ``boneheaded’’ move in involving contributor Antoin ``Tony’’ Rezko, a Chicago businessman, in the purchase of the property on June 15, 2005.
Rezko’s wife, Rita, also an Obama donor, bought the adjoining plot in Hyde Park from the couple, Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick, for the $625,000 asking price, the same day that Obama bought the house for $300,000 less than the asking price. Antoin Rezko was under federal investigation at the time.
Rezko was indicted on unrelated fraud charges 16 months later, in October 2006. Obama has since returned about $85,000 in campaign contributions made or raised by Rezko.
The sellers hadn’t previously made their side of the story public out of concern for their privacy, according to Bill Burton, a spokesman for Obama’s campaign. They approached Obama’s Senate office 15 months ago and agreed to break their silence now through the campaign out of concern that the story was being distorted in the media, Burton said.
As I was writing this post, I took a break and checked the comments to a previous post, and found this:

I disagree with Cap Ed… I think what Obama did was effectively plagiarism. Plagiarism isn’t just about exact words, but ideas…and in this case, the idea of “Are these famous phrases ‘just words’?” and phrasing it pretty much like the previous speaker did…that would count as plagiarism. Think about how comedians fiercely defend their comedic routines. If someone did a 7 Dirty Words bit and used slighly different dirty words (like “cocklicker” rather than “cocksucker”), you wouldn’t call that person a Carlin-ripoff?
But I don’t think this will hurt Obama much. It’s the Internet age…most of the young people who support Obama have probably done something similar when writing their term papers.

That averages out to around $120 per donation. The limit per person is $2300 until the convention.

I was going to go in to politics, but I realized that all of the good words and phrases have been used by someone else. Since anything I would try to say could be construed as plagiarism, there was no sense in running.
What we need is a book that attributes words and phrases to those who first used them. Then everyone agree to never use these words in any form of communication. That ought to lead to lots of grunting and squealing as that is all that would be left to do, make odd sounds because everyone else owns the rest of the language.

If Pat and Obama agreed beforehand that they should share each other’s speeches, then that’s fine with me. But that was a revelation that came AFTER Clinton complained, so as much as I hate Clinton, I don’t think it’s fair to jump to shooting the messenger. I was only debating Cap’n Ed’s point that what Obama did (whether he got consent from Pat or not) wasn’t plagiarism because “how many other ways could he have said the same thing?” It’s not just words, but concepts too.
And @ Cyrus, you’re right, I was wrong to imply that all of Obama’s supporters are still in school…(although I would argue his most fervent base is either in school or was in it at the time that the Internet changed academic research). I should’ve said, in this day of the Internet where copyrights are passe, Obama’s slight lifting won’t seem to most as a capital crime.
I do have one problem with Obama’s particular choice in speeches. He shouldn’t ever draw attention to the criticism that his campaign is merely strong rhetoric, especially with a rebuttal that points to words that are much more interesting and inspirational than anything he’s said so far.

Iam going to let you all in on a little secret. When Erick Erickson says something, you should not pay attention to what he says, but rather WHY he is saying it. I know that can be hard, what with all his idiotic quotes as of late. But you need to understand why he is saying what he is saying.
For example, the whole “we need money because teh left stole all the programmers” was widely ridiculed, as it should be. But the reason he was saying that is because he knows the best way to fund raise in his circles is to be the victim- then the money will roll in. See also, War on Christmas, Justice Sunday, etc.
Same with this. Why is he saying this? Because he knows how much support Obama is actually getting from the online left as well as mainstream America, so he needs to try to create a rift or the appearance of a rift. Examine his Illinois and U.S. Senate record and you will discover it void of any significant accomplishments. Obama is an ideologue with more experience in a law school classroom than the Senate floor. He is not qualified to become POTUS. What upsets me is you and others like you slinging all the crap, rather than supporting a reasoned discussion. I’m waiting to make up my mind, but I find the going pretty hard.
I don’t think there is any doubt that wingers are involved in the attacks on Clinton in the sites where Clinton attacks are prominent. Wingers will have a hard time finding valid avenues to attack Clinton if she is the Democratic nominee. Clinton will destroy McCain in debates.
Obama is vulnerable. Somebody has come up with a story of his innocence, but all that is window dressing. The real proof will be when he is officially absolved of all wrongdoing, when investigations have stopped with official acknowledgment of no wrong doing on his part. Until then, Obama is a lousy choice for Democrats.
Until the discussion is cleaned up, I will suggest anybody who introduces virilent ant-Clinton invective a troll, a winger stooge who is in the discussion to introduce anti-Clinton hate. That doesn’t make me pro or anti Clinton. You nor anybody else doesn’t know who I am for, simply because I haven’t made up my mind.

The most ironic part about this plagiarism thing is that pretty much all of the candidates adapted the “change” theme after Obama took off. Mitt Romney’s commercial here in Florida talked about “conservative change”, Hillary has been spouting “change” (how putting the Clintons back in the White House is change, I have no fucking idea). Nobody mentioned shit about “change” til Obama did.
Also, Hillary has no problem using his “fired up and ready to go” and “yes, we can” lines and then she has the fucking gall to call him a plagiarist.

Folks who don’t want to make reasoned discussions, or can’t, come across as people who are anti-Hillary. Wingers are lying and mendacious creeps who will do anything to get elected, including populating blogs like this to influence against whomever they think is the most danger to them.
My concern is that Obama is vulnerable and will remain vulnerable until he is fully absolved legally. Until he is and all investigations are concluded then he will be open to indictment by bush and his department of justice minions. The record shows these people lie and will do anything to game the system. Seems to me to be simple logic. Or I may be wrong. But I’m waiting to hear why this scenario is not possible.

You can’t be “fully absolved legally” unless you were to be charged with something, have a trial, and be found not guilty. Courts do not go around pre-emptively absolving people because there is an inaccurate internet meme going around. What crime, pray tell, would Obama be charged with here?

wow, I used to frequent TalkLeft during the Libby trial for legal opinions….I just noticed they are deleting non-offensive comments…I had just read one detailing the speech writer commonality and how the fanatic Clinton supporters should quit harping on red state delegates and voters as lesser entities and how any other states outside of Cali/NY etc don’t matter…I refreshed it 5 mins later and poof it was gone!
It wasn’t offensive in any way, only offering a coherent rebuttal with a few facts and it was erased.

Poor EEEL. He’s suffering—the Dems are having a vicious full party argument about which of two people will be nominated, and are actually talking about things like strategy and personnel instead of policy differences…because both candidates are completely acceptable to the party on policy.
Even worse, everybody has already said that they’ll work for the winner no matter who he or she is.
There’s no real and important disagreement; there’s no deep circular firing squad; we’re arguing because somebody has to win and somebody has to lose, and nobody likes losing—not because some constituency in the party is threatening to bolt and form a third part, or because some overblown SpaceGhostMedium is saying that he can’t vote for one of the candidates because…well, just because.
