I am beginning to notice a trend:
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.
Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.
A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding,” and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.
Why is everyone soliciting sex in bathrooms, for chrissakes? Is there some underground bathroom/gay sex culture out there? And if you have ever been to a public bathroom in WV (especially the ones in out of the way gas stations), sex is the last damned thing on your mind. A hot shower with bleach is what I am thinking about when I use a public bathrom- not hot gay sex.
I guess there are other things to discuss about this, like what this means for 2008, and what it means that so many elected Republicans are apparently closeted homosexuals, but I can’t past the ick value of sex in a public latrine. For some reason I remember Craig’s name associated with homosexuality, but I can’t find anything in my archives.

*** Update ***
In case you are wondering how the right wing will treat this, Hot Air addresses the issue of a Republican Senator soliciting sex in a bathroom and discovers… MEDIA PERFIDY:
If you’re wondering which party he belongs to, let me put it this way: the media will be sure to specify it in its reporting on this story.
Yes. The fallout from this one clearly can be pinned on the media, Allah.
*** Update ***
Poor Jeff is upset with me. You see- I fail to recognize the UTMOST SIGNIFICANCE in the fact that last week, a media report (according to the comments, several reports) was found that didn’t include a “D” next to Rep. Filner’s name after he allegedly shoved (or something) a flight attendant (or someone). Therefore, this is proof that the media is biased and that I am not a “TRUE CONSERVATIVE.”
I think, Jeff, what we all need to really get the lesson is a 22,000 word essay from you on the issue. Something fascinating. With lots of cockslapping and your normally dense and unreadable prose. And hopefully, if we are really lucky, you will get a comment from someone who disagrees with you, which you can add to the post in a 10,000 word update of additional impenetrable gibberish. Maybe you can throw in some thoughts on masculinity, too. Riveting stuff.
But let us know, first. I will need to have a few drinks first to catch up with you.
Ben
Hypocrisy at the highest level. 100% anti-gay voting record and yet he’s doing this? In a public bathroom? I just don’t understand.
S.W. Anderson
More evidence Idaho got it right about being a virtual one-party state. It’s just that Idahoans chose the wrong party.

This is truly pricless. His excuse about having a “wide stance” when he uses the bathroom is the best part.

You don’t? Pretty clear to me. It’s called hypocrisy, deflection, and projection.
The louder someone cries that someone else’s lifestyle is immoral, the more sure you can be that the crier is worried about his own morality.
Inasmuch as this is pretty much human behavior 101, one wonders how so many people fall for the bullshit.
Pb
I agree. And I’m predicting that Fox will specify it as “Sen. Larry Craig (D-Idaho)”. Hey, they report, you decide, right–they serve as a vital conservative counterweight to factual reporting everywhere…
dslak
The Craig story is the top one on Fox’s webpage, but his party isn’t mentioned until the second paragraph (it does mention it, and the right one, at that!).
qwerty42
as you may imagine, Wonkette has been all over this one. Alex Pareene does mention that Craig’s name came up in this regard once last fall, but was ignored. One commenter adds that the interest crashed Roll Call’s site.
Dreggas
The bottom line is self hatred and self loathing, rather than accepting themselves and coming out they hate themselves and in fighting against others they are projecting their hatred outwards.

Home-senator, for once, forget you got class… see a guy you like? Just grab him in the biscuits!

John,
Believe it or not public bathrooms and bath-houses (some do still exist) were popular for this for a number of reasons. Unless I am mistaken this is also where the idea of the “glory hole” comes from.
It happens in the mens room because the doors to the stalls can be locked and there’s no tracing any part of it and there is also a lesser likelihood of being seen. Further there is complete and total anonymity and less likelihood of being recognized (again see glory holes).
Bubblegum Tate
You know, I’ve tended to take stances like this within political discourse as snarky rejoinders or cynical bon mots. But goddamn if the modern GOP isn’t working overtime turn such stances into sober reflections of undeniable reality. More projection than fucking IMAX.
KCinDC
Is that a serious question? I didn’t realize you’d led such a sheltered life. That said, I agree with you about the bleach, but apparently there are others who don’t.
Doctor Gonzo
John, why bathrooms? Because it is semi-private and you know there will be other men there.
Back in the day, I used to work for the University of Minnesota Police Department, and these stings happened all the time. It’s the foot-tapping, that’s the signal. Go into a bathroom that is known for being frequented by these people, sit in a stall, and wait. Before too long somebody’s foot will be a-tappin’, and it’s not because they are getting antsy.
Z
Men will solicit sex with other men any place there are male strangers and some expectation of privacy. Public bathrooms, public parks, where ever. The difference between straight-pretending men and openly gay men is that gay men will go to the gay bars or all male gyms (ie bath houses) to pick up other men. Straight-pretending men prefer to act as though they were in the park at 3 am only to take a lovely walk, when man-on-man sex (generally with a hustler or another guy who has a wife and kids at home) just HAPPENED. That poor straight pretender was lured into sin by the evil homosexual. That is why gays must be destroyed.
The Other Steve
I remember this name coming up before… so i did a search.
He was outed last fall by Mike Rodgers… the noted gay activist who outs gays with anti-gay track records.
myiq2xu
You need to realize that many gays are closeted, self-loathing or not. Especially those that are politicians.
They often are married with children (with apologies to Al Bundy) and can only find outlets for their sexual desires with fast, anonymous sexual trysts. The homosexual version of what Erica Jong called “zipless fuucks.”
It is virtually impossible for a member of the

Jake
He was in the women’s room?
I’m still of the opinion (call me old fashioned) that fucking a guy in a toilet stall doesn’t make you gay, in the same way Strom Thurmond wasn’t black or somehow less of a racist dick because he got one of his parent’s house maids pregnant.
Craig isn’t a closet queer, he’s just another pervert. Part of the reason shits like him scream so much about gay rights is because they don’t want to think of their sex objects as fully human. Plus, it means (or used to) who ever they screw is less likely to out themselves to out the neo-con.
Still funny as shit though. What’s this, three in this month?
Dreggas
Having to live half in half out of the closet, and being in the closet when I lived back east was a bitch. Granted I am bi so I could and did date girls but there were times when I just wanted to scream out that I liked both. Of course there was part of me that got a kick out of it when people called me a faggot if only because they didn’t know the truth LOL.
John Cole
Now let’s be fair. Gay bathhouses in San Francisco and the apparent fact that you can get a blowjob and more if you tap your foot in a bathroom stall are two different things.
I had heard of gay bathhouses. This other thing is news to me. If that makes me sheltered, so be it. I would think someone would have told me not to tap my foot in the damned bathroom if this was so widely known.
Dreggas
Not many people know or think about this. It was very popular at highway rest stops too. It was anonymous and no one knew etc. It all went back to not wanting to get caught.
Z
Jake,
Actively seeking to fuck a guy in a bathroom stall doesn’t necessarily mean you are gay. It does mean, at a minimum, that you are bisexual.
Andrew
I’m going to have to disagree and saying that fucking guys is pretty much exactly what makes guys gay. Besides prison.
Pb
More like the fourth para–and if you blink, you’ll miss it… That could have been an oversight on their part though, for all I know, they’re just quoting or paraphrasing the (currently inaccessible) Roll Call article. Maybe it’s just that the default assumption now is that it’s a Republican Senator? Is that why, Fox?
John Cole
Woah, woah, woah. Who said anything about fucking people?
I thought this was all about a blowjob. And, after the 90’s, I thought we all agreed blowjobs aren’t sex.
Therefore, I submit to you that Larry Craig is straight.
Kevin Hayden
Scientists have noted that public restrooms are popular trysting spots because the lack of decent toilet paper compels all normally heterosexual men to dream of sequins and show tunes. After which they just need to be held.
Kevin Hayden
I agree, John. I don’t know the secret handshakes, either, like which ear can I wear an earring in? But in Craig’s case, he followed by playing footsie with his foot in the officer’s stall, then waved his hand beneath the stall wall.
So it was a series of actions, not just tapdancing.

In the UK it’s called Cottaging and the practice goes WAY back.
I am surprised to read that John has never heard of the gay restroom sex code. He’s not alone. I also read Booman Tribune and over there, Booman didn’t know about “the code” either. I was told as a young kid, even before I had much knowledge about sex not to tap your foot in a public restroom. And if someone near you is tapping their foot, they want anonymous sex. Just make sure not to tap your foot back at them unless you want to partake.
I wonder if the cop had tapped back, causing Craig to make his next move and put his hand under the divider. The reports didn’t specify what the cop did and Craig claims he was reaching for an imaginary piece of paper he dropped on the floor and that’s the story he decided to stick with.
It’s my understanding that it used to be alot more common back in the days when no one came out of the closet. It was one of the only places where one could find a willing anonymous sex partner. Nowadays though, there should not be any shame in publicly declaring your sexuality and living openly, allowing gay men to live more normal lives. The Republican closet case hypocrites can’t stand the idea of stable, monogamous gay relationships though and they are determined to take us back to the “Glory-Hole Days” that they are all so fond of.
Dug Jay
I see that someone over at Protein Wisdom has an observation on the John Cole/Jeff Goldstein kerfuffle.

Voting to bar gays from getting married = Not homophobic.
Pointing out that a guy who voted to bar gays from getting married has been busted trying to have sex with another guy = Homophobic.
Let’s look at some other non-homophobic highlights from non-homophobic Craig’s career:
Voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation.
Voted NO on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation.

Any truth to the rumor that this Craig/Filden conspiracy by the AP just bumped Hillary five points in national polls? The conspiracy will no matter how many Republicans it has to solicit for gay sex in bathrooms.

Mr. Goldstein missed his calling, (several times apparently.) With his talent for misdirection, he could have perhaps been a good enough magician to make a living entertaining children for their birthday parties.
The story about Senator Craig is not about homosexuality, or bisexuality, or the Senator’s particular sexuality. The story is about a violation of law; one of a number of laws on the books in all jurisdictions designed to prohibit and punish
sexual activity (of any kind) in public.
Senator Craig pleaded guilty to a crime. Next case …

Scott Thompson does the best closet case ever in Brain Candy, the movie by The Kids in the Hall. The movie is totally worth watching. Interestingly enough, one of the two biggest secrets the Republican party hides from the knuckle-draggers in the base is how tolerant they actually are of homosexuality in their own ranks. (The other is how disinclined they are to actually overturn Roe vs. Wade, thereby slaughtering their plumpest cash cow.)
I know a gay lawyer who once had a very successful practice in Washington D.C…. he told me that I would be shocked to learn just how many closeted queers there were in the GOP power structure. Not so many in Congress itself, though Mitch McConnell and Lindsay Graham are two particularly powerful Republican closet cases (as were Larry Craig and Mark Foley at the time we chatted), and he’s about 75% sure that Denny Hastert is one as well.
On the other hand, closet cases are legion among the machinery of the party. Former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman is (barely) secretly gay, as I’m sure many of you know. There may not be a single GOP Congressman who doesn’t have at least one queer staff member. (Rick Santorum had one!) And my friend maintains that at least half of the K Street lobbyists (nearly all of whom are Republicans) like to “putt from the rough.” There are more than a few secret, very private gentleman’s clubs in D.C. that cater exclusively to discreet conservative gays. In the lofty heights of Washington politics, this is common knowledge… though certainly not among Red State Americans, the kind who utterly adored Mark Foley.
This confused me at first, until I thought about it for awhile. Then it all became clear: What better training could there be for a career in GOP politics than being gay and in the closet? Think about it — your average politician has to lie to, mislead or bullshit at least half a dozen people before lunch time. And if you can pull off the Herculean effort of assuring your parents, your peers, your teachers and your pastor that you are really, truly attracted to those of the opposite gender all the way into your adulthood… well, telling the teacher’s union “there’s absolutely no way that I’ll be making cuts in your textbook budget,” with a poker face is a piece of cake.

Since no one has said it yet, I should add that this seems like just the kind of thing that makes us look weak to our enemies. John,
Is there anything left on your blog that pretends to be conservative anymore or do you just pander to Daily Kos as a full time job now? The problem with trying to be the less read version of Andrew Sullivan is that Andrew Sullivan isn’t read anymore.
I don’t think anyone on the right knows what to think about the Craig story – more details will surely come out but it looks like your typical politician sex scandal. I’m sure he’ll probably eventually resign. With that said, how you’re unable to see how Allah was making light of the fact that the media is always eager to label Republican scandals with a scarlet ‘R’ right from the get go while pretending the ‘D’ doesn’t exist when Democrats are involved in scandal is obvious to anyone who isn’t an idiot.
It’s particularly obvious given that the incidents occurred within a week of one another. Allah’s commentary was nothing more than that – not a defense of Craig nor a condemnation – just a passing comment on media bias which is obvious to anyone. Ok, well perhaps not obvious to 1) liberal hacks or 2) people who constantly claim to be conservative but pander to liberal hacks because their entire readership now seems to consist of liberal hacks.
I’m say you fit nicely into the latter category. Bravo. Your blog used to be interesting but stopped somewhere between your “Bush=Hitler” Andy Sullivan lectures and your “fake but accurate”, “I was wrong but I’m still right and here’s why” defense of the Scott Beauchamp nonsense.

The point of the post was to explain in rather simplistic, childlike terms what Jeff of Protein Wisdom and Allah were claiming in their posts. Of course, their posts shouldn’t require explanation as it was obvious to anyone who’s bothering to pay attention that they were strictly a commentary on media bias, not a defense of Larry Craig. What defense is there of Larry Craig? We don’t know if he’s done anything wrong yet for sure – so far we’re just assuming he has. It certainly SOUNDS like a sex scandal but we don’t know for sure yet. ProteinWisdom and Allah were not defending Craig – they don’t even know what he’s done yet. It’s sort of pathetic that this has to be explained to John here. I can say with a pretty good deal of certainly that the John Cole of 2003 or so would not require such an obvious explanation. Does the “conservative with a conscience” route make you stupid? Beats me.
But hey, he’s got to get his props with his new liberal hack readership and what better way to do that than to…make shit up. And again, the problem with trying to be the less read version of Andrew Sullivan is that no one reads Andrew Sullivan.

You probably didn’t realize it but by saying the above you just admitted you don’t read any conservative or center-right blogs.
Yes, the stories NOW say Filner is a Democrat. When they were first released, there was no mention of party affiliation. Conservative blogs pointed out the strange…shall we say oversight given that they are more than happy to label party affiliation whenever the scandal involves a scarlet letter ‘R’. It wasn’t until AFTER this was pointed out that the stories then included Filner’s party affiliation. You would of course know this sequence of events if you read any (i.e. one) conservative blog. But you don’t, and you’ve admitted as such just now, albeit unintentionally.
This isn’t to say conservatives think there’s some sort of CONSPIRACY!!! at work here. It’s a simple commentary and illustration of passive liberal bias that is pervasive in the mainstream media. Nothing more and nothing else. The fact the Craig had his party affiliation named in the initial reports is just another illustration of it. Allah and Protein Wisdom were speaking to this commentary, NOT supporting or defending Larry Craig.
And I’m laughing at the fact that this needs to be explained to John Cole. If this speaks to the intelligence of the “conservative with a conscience” crowd, I want no part of it.
John S.
I’m sure this is precisely the stuff ol’ Phil would be saying if the congressman was a Democrat.
Pb
Well, maybe you don’t–what’s your theory on that, by the way? Accidental guilty plea? Spent a month trying to fill out the form, forgot to ask his lawyer about it, and then checked the wrong box? I’m sure it happens all the time…..
DougJ
I’ve now gone through pretty much all the major news coverage of Filner (frankly, the story isn’t that exciting, I’ve got to tell you) and all but one mentioned that he was a Democrat. The one that didn’t was one of those abbreviated versions of an AP piece that tv stations run on their website. The full AP piece did mention it.
I’m also going to say this: I really don’t care that much if some Congressman shoves a baggage handler somewhere, as long as it’s not my Congressman. Chris Shays (R) did something similar, by the way.
Next conspiracy theory please.

Have I said how much I loathe some dickhead blogger calling himself Allah?
It’s different from my neighbor calling himself Jesus, because my neighbor’s name is Jesus.
This guy, on the other hand, is part of Ace’s crowd, and he thinks it’s funny.
John Cole
DOUGJ- It is the same every time from these clowns. They have convinced themselves that somehow or another I am playing to the Kos crowd (ungrateful fuckers never even invited me to the Yearly Kos) or somehow trying to emulate Sullivan. It is silly- I seriously doubt there is any blogger who so routinely tells his commenters to fuck off. An odd way of sucking up to you all, indeed.
It never once occurs to them that maybe, just maybe, I believe what I am saying now as much as I believed what I was saying back when I agreed with them on many issues. The only reason I have come up for this is that they don’t believe what they are saying most of the time, so they think nobody does.
Putting aside the fact that I never once have said Bush= Hitler, or any of the other crap regularly attributed to me, the reason they hate me is they feel like I have somehow betrayed them. They think I have somehow let them down because I still believe in al lthe things I used to, I have just come to the conclusion that this administration doesn’t, and I have come to the conclusion the Republican party doesn’t.
Oh, sure, they say they are for individual liberty and respect individual rights and so on, and they can say it while they are cheerleading this administration’s surveillance policies or providing rhetorical cover for this administration’s torture policies or pretending that gay marriage really will destroy America.
And so it is on every issue. Maybe they are right- I have betrayed them. I have learned that they, this administration, and the Republican party are completely and totally full of shit. They have learned nothing, and still have as their guiding principle that the “DEMOCRATS ARE WORSE.” That is the real big difference between me and them- I learned something the past 6-7 years. They didn’t.
So fuck ’em all. I can take their petty insults. I can handle listening to Ricky West post on every website he can find that I am just parroting Sullivan. I can handle that idiot Goldstein being too clever by a half and I can handle his circle jerk of yes men in the comments section. I really don’t give a shit what any of them think, and you can come in here and think you are upsetting me with your stupid comments, Phil, but you aren’t.
You see- I don’t care what you think. When I read knuckleheads like you, I realize what you really are. A poor man’s Powerline.
Take that and suck on it for a little while, you administration toadie. And if I bother you so much- stop reading me. I won’t miss you.

Here’s a partial list of the folks Phil and his ilk don’t know what to think of. Probably JeffG’s fantasy locker room.”
Hey srv,
I’ll keep it simple. Meet Mark Foley. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Foley
Mark Foley sent explicit and inappropriate emails to an underage page. Foley was forced to resign by his party.
Now meet Gerry Studds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_Studds
Gerry Studds had sex with an underage page. Studds was not forced to resign by his party. On the contrary, he continued to be re-elected to the House of Representatives by Democratic voters 6 more times. “Dean Hara, whom Studds married in 2004, said after Studds’ death in 2006 that Studds had never been ashamed of the relationship with the page.”

Yes Phil. Perhaps you could set up a diorama of a bathroom stall with a doll representing Larry Craig with his pants around his ankles. Then you can have another doll representing the arresting officer and see if your diorama disproves this scandalous charge against the good Senator. Surely you can reproduce the good Senator’s “wide stance.”
Afterwards you can take your dolls and pretend you are fighting the Islamocommiefascists and saving the United States from perpetual dhimmitude.

I feel guilty. I didn’t do what I could have. But as Condi said, no one could have predicted this mess.

You mean the Gerry Studds who was censured by the Democratic House? The Gerry Studds whose “victim” stood by him at the press conference when the affair was revealed ten years later? Yeah, that’s the same thing as Foley acting as a predator with teenage congressional pages.

We should just save some time and assume all right-wing conservatives are secretly gay. Jeff Gannon, Ted Haggard, Bill Allen, etc. etc.
And given Jeff Goldstein’s repeated fantasies of beating people with his cock, we could probably extend the list. Just come out, Jeff. There’s no shame in being gay, my friend. You’re going to end up like Roy Cohn.
Well, people remember Roy Cohn. Bad example.

I’m beginning to wonder whether there are any Repubs without sex issues. Between the self-loathing of emotionally unhealthy closeted gay conservatives and the anti-sex subtext at the root of the pro-life movement, I’m beginning to suspect that sexual maladjustment is even more the classic hallmark of modern conservatives than their never-ending attempts to find a moral justification for selfishness. One wonders what personality changes could result were these guys to ever experience even one entirely joyous, guilt-free sexual experience.

I mean, it is all they ever fucking drone on about, media bias this, media bias that, liberal media. And it honestly never occurs to them that the folks on the other side of the spectrum think the media is biased, too- towards conservatives.
This is not a defense of the media, but really, that was their grand scheme? Thousands of earnest liberals joined the ranks of the media so that when Rep. Filner acted up at an airport, they could secretly alert each other and not put a (D) after his name in an initial AP report? Because that would certainly save the Democrats from electoral defeat 14 months later?
Really- that is the grand scheme?

Hell, I don’t even consider myself much of a Republican anymore. I don’t want to be lumped in with you stupid shits.”
Oh please John, “conservative with a conscience” is exactly what you are. This isn’t political, it’s personal. My guess is that the differences for you and Sullivan traveling that “course” are different. For Sullivan, it was the gay marriage amendment. Hyperbole? Read Sullivan’s post up until the very moment the marriage amendment was proposed and the very moment it was voted down but got majority support by Republicans. It is like night and day. Sullivan suffers from ridiculous amounts of cognitive dissonance and is not worth debating anymore. He’s the equivalent of a poorly educated school child at this point.
Perhaps you haven’t made allusions to “Bush=Hitler” but Sullivan certainly has and frequently. He also has some odd obsession with knowing, just KNOWING that Glenn Reynolds loves to get his torture on (even though Reynolds has explicitly said he is against it, MANY TIMES).
I don’t claim to know you, nor do i care to, but your postings seem to reflect more of a “I want to be popular” aspect. The Iraq war became unpopular and thus it became the wrong thing to do (John Cole circa now) rather than the
right thing to do (John Cole circa 2003). The Iraq war was popular in 2003 and isn’t now.
“Take that and suck on it for a little while, you administration toadie.”
Ha, now that’s funny. Trust me, I am anything but. My politics rarely intersect with the President, but I also haven’t decided to lay in bed with liberal hacks. I support the War on Terror, unapologetically and emphatically so, even if that makes me unpopular with the Upper East Side crowd. Your postings seem to indicate you want to win their favor rather than playing it down the middle. If you wanted to play the “conservative with a conscious” role, I suggest playing the “conservative” part on occasion, rather than insulting the people who DON’T think its so great when people who tell us “WE SUPPORT THE TROOPS!!!” write utter lies about how the military mocks disfigured women among other thigs. The military aren’t choir boys but I don’t need some wanna military liberal poet making shit up about them.
At that point, you could have simply admitted you were wrong, and joined the “conservatives of conscious” who asked the New Republic to retract the story because it was bullshit. Instead you dug in further, saying it didn’t make a difference because the Iraq War is horrible and its supporters are horrible torturers and blah blah blah.
Somewhere along the “course” you went from conservative warmonger like Sullivan (and I mean that sincerely, no one was more bloodthirsty than Sullivan pre-2004) to playing it down the middle to the full 180 degree liberal hack. You could have chosen to play it down the middle. Instead you just play dumb.
Which is why you need to have comments such as those of Protein Wisdom and Allah explained to you. The John Cole of 2003 or hell, even 2005 wouldn’t require this. But you’ve come full circle now John. Full fucking circle. Hope that makes you popular with the “right” people John.

You think I’m ashamed of that?
Phil, I’ll take a less hostile tone here because you are engaging and using a certain amount of reason and facts. And I applaud you for that. The thing about the Filner “scandal” is that, well, no one really cares. I wouldn’t care if he was a Republican, I don’t care that he’s a Democrat. I don’t care that Chris Shays did something similar — I still think Shays is one of the best Republican Congressmen there is.
If Filner had spent his entire career crusading against air rage and voting for bills that toughened penalties for people who pushed baggage handlers, that would be different. But he didn’t.
If Filner had said he didn’t really push the baggage handler put just nudged her because he takes a “wide stance” while he was waiting for his baggage, that would be different.

Phil,
It’s not about popularity, it’s about principle. Bush wasn’t all that even in late 2004, but John Cole voted for him, in part because of his continued support for the Iraq war. Hey John, “conservative with a conscience”, here’s your new audience. Mark Foley terrible. Gerry Studds victim. And you say conservatives will defend anything.

“I mean, it is all they ever fucking drone on about, media bias this, media bias that, liberal media. And it honestly never occurs to them that the folks on the other side of the spectrum think the media is biased, too- towards conservatives.
This is not a defense of the media, but really, that was their grand scheme? Thousands of earnest liberals joined the ranks of the media so that when Rep. Because that would certainly save the Democrats from electoral defeat 14 months later?
Really- that is the grand scheme?”
John, poll after poll show that 90 percent of the media vote Democratic. Like I said before and you apparently completely ignored, this no grand CONSPIRACY!!!, just a simple fact. Protein Wisdom and Allah were doing a passive commentary on this, perhaps in the hopes that (horror!) in future instances the media would identify the political party involved in a scandal…regardless of political party committing the scandal!!! (double horror!)
And yet you’ve decided to mock me, as though I’m a nut for pointing out that 90% of the media votes Democratic, and that this could….might possibly maybe sorta could affect media coverage. But no, only RIGHT WING NUT JOBS make such allusions. And it’s up to “conservatives of conscience” to right the ship.
Look John, I see that your entire readership is composed of liberal hacks now (see Gerry Studds was a victim example posted above) so you’re playing to your audience. Maybe you’re not a “conservative of conscience” – maybe the money for your BlogAds is just better now so you have to play the part. I don’t know. Frankly, don’t care anymore John.
I do know actual “conservatives with a conscience” generally are at least somewhat conservative and don’t:
A) mock conservatives for pointing out the 90% of the media vote Democratic and this could have an impact of active or passive media bias
B) mock conservatives for suggesting the New Republic should admit the story that Scott Beauchamp wrote was false when it was…found to be false
C) defend the kind of people who think Gerry Studds was a victim
Do you want me to go on John? Go appeal to your new base John. It’s different than mine.
Good night.
John Cole
Shorter Phil- I assign you a title, in this case “conservative in conscience,” and then mockingly refer to it repeatedly as if you call yourself a conservative with conscience.
Shorter Phil: I admit to knowing nothing about you, but then will impugn all of your motives for posting as desiring to be popular.
Phil- Here is a hint. My traffic is roughly where it was last year, which is roughly where it was the year before, which is roughly where it was the year before that. If i wanted to be “popular,” the marketing choice for me is clear- I spend my days and nights sucking up to Hugh Hewitt, Michelle Malkin, and post ridiculously stupid things like “DHIMMOCRATS DON’T SUPPORT THE WAR ON TERROR” or “YOU WILL LOOK GOOD IN A BURKHA” or write five thousand word essays on why the memorial in Pennsylvania looks like a crescent moon and watch the hits roll in. It is tried and true. You have read the “conservative” blogosphere lately, haven’t you?
Hell, if I were truly enterprising, I would create a site using a truly original name like Hot Air (sound familiar? Look at my masthead) and then publish links to nothing but those aforementioned nutters.
As to Beauchamp, I played it straight down the middle- I still don’t know if what Beauchamp wrote was true, but I still think Greater Wingnuttia’s reaction was absurd. maybe I am jaded and cynical, but I don’t see someone taunting a woman in the mess hall or running over a dog as SMEARING THE TROOPS. I see it as some jackass doing something crude in a war zone.

Also, Phil…if 90% of the media (an interesting fact, care to cite it?) are in liberal, how come that really doesn’t seem to have helped the Democrats, in I dunno, the majority of presidential elections in the past 40 years. Or that the media was helpless to prevent the Republican Revolution in 1994, which enjoyed dominance for the next dozen years? Oh, what’s that? I’m sorry, I didn’t realize! The media is in fact a huge Jabberwock with incredible powers of mind control for the liberal side, and thousands of helpless conservatives and their families live in constant fear from it. Millions of faceless Associated Propoganda reporter-drones, their minds directly linked to the Surrender Monkey Overmind, work tirelessly on its behalf. I also forgot that there or no people with conservative opinions or viewpoints in the media, ever. No newspapers, no television, no blogs dare show the conservative side, for fear of the Golden Bull of Media. No talk raido, no books, no magazines, no pundits dare support the war now. It’s awful to live as a persecuted and harassed conservative, I know, where no one agrees with you, ever. It must be harder still when you use reason and calm logicwith John Cole to turn him back to your side, he immediately smears you with uncouth name calling.

You’re a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin’ day.
When you’re a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You’re a family man!
You have betrayed your homies, John.

I remember how the evil MSM failed to report that William Jefferson was a Dem – I couldn’t believe it. Because it didn’t happen.
Is it more evil to neglect to identify the party of the alleged perpetrator, or to identify it incorrectly?
I sure do remember the outrage on the right-wing sites when Fox labeled Foley a Dem. Man, that was a real blogswarm.

John seems to be off today. Anyway, here’s yet another example of Name That Party:
http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=9676
Can you guess what party Mr. Ford is in? And notice the date…why that’s today!
Now John, let’s make this slow and simple for you to understand. The reference to this is not a defense of Larry Craig. Its not a condemnation of Larry Craig. It actually has nothing to do whatsoever with Larry Craig! The point was to show passive media bias, and this is yet another example of it, and it happened again today. Literally one day after I said it happens often. Its also what Allah and Protein Wisdom were alluding to in their post before you went into conniptions about how the NON-“conservatives with a conscious” crowd thinks bathroom stall sex is just fine and dandy as long as Republicans are doing it. Nevermind that they said nothing of the sort. I understand the “conservatives with a conscious” crowd pays not attention to these matters. You’ve got a conscious John. And you go with what feels right, which is certainly better than what we think, since your conscious is bigger than mine (I, after all, do not have a conscious as I’ve stopped reading Andrew Sullivan).
After all, Michelle Malkin is an evil whore and since SHE thinks that the Scott Beauchamp story was handled improperly by TNR and requires an apology from them, ANYONE who thinks this way is not welcome in the “conservatives with a conscious” crowd. Because, well, they have consciouses. And evil whores don’t.
John, I don’t really care about the change of your politics. George Will was NEVER in favor of the Iraq War and I consider him the best conservative columnist in the nation. Its your lectures. Nobody like lectures John. I know we’re supposed to confess our sins and say the Iraq war is horrible and we should be ashamed of ourselves, but guess what? Fuck you John, we think it was the right thing to do and perhaps we’re even winning it now.
I know you’re invested in defeat at this point John. I know we just HAVE to lose to repent so it will never happen again. But the surge is showing strong military progress and slow but gathering political progress. I know the left has already written the war off long ago (they’re invested heavily in its defeat now and no one, not even liberals who are bad at math, likes bad investments) and I’m just silly and absolutely ridiculous for saying this but what if we WIN John?
What if? Where does the “conservatives with a conscious” crowd go from there?
Buddy
If the republican party really is the party of “moral values”, we will evict all the divorcees, adulterers, serial monogamists, prostitute-seeking, etc from the party. Let us begin to focus on Christ’s issues: the poor, sick, homeless, and various other social contracts.

“Hypocrisy at the highest level. 100% anti-gay voting record and yet he’s doing this? In a public bathroom? I just don’t understand.”
Exactly! This is the most hypocritical act I’ve ever seen.
But you have to remember that politics is full of this type of thing.
