I am swamped and have meetings all day, so unless Tim comes out of hiding, this is it for the day.
1.) Democracy Now has an interview with a psychologist who examined Padilla.
A quick note- I am noticing a new meme pop up (I saw it in the comments at the Volokhs, and saw it again here), and that is that Padilla was not in solitary confinement because we were trying to break him, but because it was unsafe for him to be in the general population. Let’s try to track that baby over the next few days and see if we can figure out where it came from, because that sure is a beauty.
2.) There appears to be more hard evidence that Attorney General Gonzalez is a liar. I am sure you all are as shocked as I am.
3.) Chip Pickering joins a growing list of Republican incumbents who are opting to not run again in 2008.
4.) Jenna Bush is engaged. I still contend Barbara is the cute one.
5.) Three more miners were killed and six injured in the rescue attempts in Utah. I would not want to have to be part of the inevitable discussions taking place today over whether or not to continue the rescue attempts.
6.) The administration plan to use satellites, discussed for days in the blogosphere, is getting some more media attention (in fairness, the discussion started because of the WSJ, so it is not like blogs are “pushing” this debate).

A heartbreaking story. What can be said about this except that these rescuers are amazing heroes? Personally I can’t see how the rescue attempt can continue, but I don’t understand the risks of mining well enough to even have an opinion.

1. I heard the psychologist speaking about Padilla’s torture and found myself both ashamed and angry. HOW on earth can anyone justify what was done to that man, regardless of his crimes? The Rosenbergs, Tim McViegh and John Allen Muhammed will all tried having been given access to counsel from day one.
This guy, a failed AQ wannabe gets his mind scrambled by reverse engineered SERE techniques, is denied access to counsel for 3.5 years and eventually gets convicted of charges that are shadow of the trumped-up nonsense the government orginally claimed he was guilty of.
Yet there are people; some of them who post on this very site, who would call Padilla’s trial and conviction an example of “justice”.

WashPost describes the mining mountain as essentially “collapsing slowly”. They’ve honeycombed the thing with such poorly supported tunnels that it’s coming down from the inside out. If those miners were lucky, they were killed instantly in the collapse.
And Bush’s mining overseer was so incompetent that even the old rubber stamp Republican Congress wouldn’t appoint him – Bush put him in as a recess appointment.
