I was scanning USA Today at the coffee shop, and I saw that a Duke alumnus purchased a full page ad for them. This is the only write-up I can find at google news:
A Duke alumnus purchased a full-page ad in today’s USA Today to support the Duke men’s lacrosse team.
Bob Pascal’s black-and-white ad reads “For a team very few people stood by, how about a standing ovation?” It then lists the lacrosse team’s accomplishments in the wake of a rape allegation against three players that caused Duke to cancel the last eight games of the 2006 season.
The charges against the three lacrosse players were dropped in April. All three players and former head coach Mike Pressler attended Monday’s national championship game, which the Blue Devils lost 12-11 to Johns Hopkins.
Pascal was an All-America halfback in 1955 for the Blue Devils’ football team, which won the Orange Bowl 34-7 over Nebraska. Pascal graduated in 1957.
It was not immediately clear if the ad ran nationally or regionally, but USA Today charges $106,400 for a black-and-white full-page advertisement that runs nationally, according to its website.
If you missed the Hopkins/Duke game Monday, you missed a good one. I sort of suspect that the Hopkins team got drunk at half time, but they pulled it out in the end.
Also while at the coffee shop, I heard, unfortunately, a song I have not heard in ages- Styx- Too Much Time on My Hands. Sadly, I knew every word. Which leads to the question:
Which is cheesier:
A.) Styx- Too Much Time on My Hands
B.) Foreigner- Jukebox Hero
Punchy
Fixed for lacrosse players everywhere.
taodon
Foreigner is obviously worse – because they’re not from this country – and that makes them America haters.
zzyzx
I find it hard to cheer for people who are racist, sexist assholes just because it turns out that they didn’t actually rape the woman they degraded.
Bubblegum Tate
Zing! Also, Foreigner is definitely cheesier.
And finally, fuck Duke. That statement doesn’t have anything to do with the Duke lacrosse team, except that it’s the Duke lacrosse team, and Duke can suck one.
cleek
Styx is worse. Mr Roboto taints everything they did before.
Zifnab
Favorite. Song. Ever!
Ok, not really, but its certainly cheese-tastic.
Jake
B. Because A. frequently describes my life.
Have you forgotten “Babe”? But at least Kilroy Was Here never became a stage/film production.
And if it did I DO NOT want to know about it. Please.
jh
This needs to be repeated. Early and Often.
Fuck those guys.
At best, they are pigs. Just not rapist pigs.
RSA
Go, Black and Blue Jays! (JHU alum, though I actually don’t care much about lacrosse.)
sjrx0213
My at-the-time 5 year old son heard “Juke Box Hero” and it became his favorite song (unfortunately for me). Of course, the 5 year old brain has a certain frame of reference, so according to him, it’s “Juice Box Hero.”
That at least makes it bearable.
–Steve
eglennb
>> B.) Foreigner- Jukebox Hero
It’s the CHEESIEST!
Also, my 5 & 10 year-olds have “Too Much Time On My Hands” and “Roundabout” in heavy mix-CD rotation at the moment, so it must have some wider appeal…
yet another jeff
Juke Box Hero is the cheesier song, but Styx is the cheesier band.
Yes Jake, Kilroy Was Here did have a film/show…many boos when they headlined the Texxas Jam in ’83. I think that was the year Sammy Hagar climbed the lighting tower.
Lesson? People that have been drinking since dawn and sitting in the middle of 80,000 people in 100 degree heat listening to Ted Nugent and Sammy Hagar do not like concept album films in the “let’s bring it down a little for some pretension” motif.
Juke Box Hero = Cheesier than Too Much Time on My Hands
Foreigner = less cheesy than Styx…even with the consideration of “Waiting for a Girl Like You”

The positive thing about this case is that it further justifies my hatred of Duke athletics, Duke academics, Duke administration, Duke students, Durham, Durham politics, and Durham residents.
yet another jeff
But Andrew…you still agree that Bull Durham was a great movie, don’t you?
Jimmmmm
Foreigner is cheezier. By far. No contest.
And the Duke lacrosse case proved one thing conclusively: Despite laws that suggest equal treatment for all, whores and women who like to fuck, unfortunately, cannot claim to be raped.
Jake
Naaaaaaaargh!! [Pours bleach in ears.]
I still haven’t forgiven SH for trying to take Roth’s place in VH. Sounds like the show should have been called the Blasphemy Blowout + Ted Nugent.
Nor do completely sober people sitting in air-conditioned rooms. There are fine concept albums (The Wall) there are fine Rock Operas (Tommy). KWH is neither.
Should have thrown the agent/promoter to the crowd.
[/music geeking]
Andrew
It’s pretty good. The historic ball park is one of Durham’s few highlights, and the World Beer Festival is held there.
So yes, there are a few redeeming qualities.
Mentally ill drug using strippers are sad. A corrupt judicial system is bad. But your statement is just ridiculous.
If there had been any evidence of actual rape, don’t you think that the Durham police and Nifong would have prosecuted the hell out of the Dookies, given that they did so without any evidence and despite proof that it could not have happened? So, yeah, strippers can easily claim to be raped.
The Other Steve
The sad thing lost in all the Duke nonsense… Is that they’d hired strippers. I don’t know how it is there, but around here that’s actually illegal.
That is, you have to be operating out of a licensed establishment.
The Foreignor album was probably one of my first CDs I purchased… the first being the Top Gun soundtrack.
Mr Furious
Styx is by far the cheesier band, though the gap between those songs is narrow. “Too Much Time” is still cheesier.
Mithras
The sad thing lost in all the Duke nonsense… Is that they’d hired strippers.
Beyond the dude on the team with the murder fantasies, sure.
But yeah, since when do college athletes need to hire women to come to their parties?
RSA
I’m a few years older than John, so I think I have a greater source of cheesy song memories than he does from the same period of our youth: Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Kansas.
Jimmmmm
No it’s not sad, Andy. The first statement from the Dukies’ counsel’s spokesperson last spring was not to claim innocence for their clients, but to attack the accusers:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-dukeandlaxt&prov=ap&type=lgns
J. Michael Neal
Can anyone really tell the difference between
BostonJourneyREO SpeedwagonEddie MoneyForeigner and Styx? For really good, cheesy 70s rock, all you need is ELO.
Andrew
A working link would help.
I don’t see how a defense lawyer questioning the credibility of an accuser is a particularly novel notion.
And given that her mental health issues were apparently known very early by the defense and police, why wouldn’t they bring up such matters?
RSA
Wikipedia has a good list of bands doing what was apparently called “arena rock”:
The only band that doesn’t fit in there, for me, is Cheap Trick, for various reasons.
AkaDad
Foreigner, since I listen to old Styx almost daily.
My favorites are Pieces of Eight, The Grand Illusion, and Paradise Theatre, in that order.
yet another jeff
Ah…ELO. My friend tells me of a game he and his buddies used to play while listening to ELO. “Where Does This Song Go Wrong?” was the name…
Jeff A
Hmmm… it’s close, but I’d say “Jukebox Hero,” for sure. I really can’t Foreigner in general, but that song in particular is one of their cheesiest. God awful.
canuckistani
It’s like a zen koan – Styx is cheesier than Foreigner, *and* Foreigner is cheesier than Styx.
I’d take Queen out of the Arena Rock list for its appeal to people other than the young white American whatevers, and for some genuine musical talent the others (excepting early Cheap Trick) don’t really share.
Jimbo
both Styx and Foreigner totally suck, but not as bad as the losers who post here! I bet none of you accomplished anything within 1,000 light years of what the Duke lax team did. you obviously were a bunch of losers in college that no one wanted to be near.
I’m glad you found each other.
jh
What, no .38 Special?
That list is bogus.
demimondian
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. _Pirates_, from _Works_. Simultaneously the cheesiest and most pretentious “rock anthem” even penned.
Punchy
OH JUST STFU. Hagar pwned Roth. Took that band to a level they never would achieved otherwise. 5150 was just a legend.
As for this:
What the FUCK is Heart doing on this list? And Kansas? They had….what…two songs, and one mildly (being generous) popular album? Where’s White Lion, Great White, and Twisted Sister?
I agree…the list sucks.
demimondian
Yo, Punchy — Kansas was headliner on an international tour in the summer of ’79. They were opened by The Moody Blues.
_Point of Know Return_ was a godawful album, but it was huge hit. (And besides, when the competition is _Breakfast in America_, you don’t have to reach very far to be a hit.)
demimondian
Fooey. Meant to sign that last posting…

Jake
OOOOOH! IT’S ON LIKE RED DAWN!
Although … if you prefer Sammy’s wimpy wailing to Roth’s full-bodied bellow I guess … well you have my sympathy my friend.
Otto Man
Foreigner’s “Juke Box Hero” is the cooler song because it was featured on Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Styx, meanwhile, was featured on the Trapper Keeper of a girl I carpooled with in the fifth grade. Advantage: Foreigner.
As far as Duke goes, let me join the chorus. The fact that the lacrosse players were merely proven to be racist, sexist, elitist, meathead assholes doesn’t inspire me to root for them. Just further confirms my experience that every single person who goes to Duke is a flaming asshole.
Nikki
Question: If all these bands are cheesy, what constitutes good rock? And I know it can’t be anything from the 80s.
canuckistani
The test is simple:
Is it the Clash?
If yes, then yes.
If no, then no.
Punchy
Did you just go all Supertramp on my ass?
As for this:
Is that some slang you kids had that meant something completely different than actually sharing a car ride? Like “junk in the trunk”, or “wrinkled star”?
RSA
“Anthem rock” apparently excludes metal bands and their forebears (e.g., Kiss), and even some power pop of that time (e.g., The Knack), and covers the late ’70s to early ’80s. Truly a great period of rock. :-)
As for good rock? It’s a matter of taste, of course, but if you don’t think The Who are great, you suck.
Face
What? Can you speak up, please?
Signed,
Pete Townshend
ATS
Apparently good taste is cheering for a Lacrosse team that did not after all rape the toples trollop they hired to grace their victory party.
A high standard to be sure. Perhaps too much to hope for these days.
Jimmmmm
Odd. Link works on my browser. Apologies.
But back to your question. Did I say the accuser’s state was NOT relevant? Of course not. I simply pointed to the article’s timeline, in which the first statement made was to denounce the accuser. Doesn’t one generally professes one’s innocence before casting aspersions? I mean, what’s the harm?
At least that’s how it’s supposed to be. When you’re innocent.
The accuser was far from perfect, and made a lousy case for her credibility. All that means to me is that The Dookies were clever (or lucky) in their choice of victim.
demimondian
Yeah — I mean, think about it. Madonna. Michael Jackson. The Stray Cats. Oh, yeah.
Oh. You said “great”, not “greatly horrible”. My bad.
demimondian
Why, I think that I did.
I don’t know which is more horrifying: remembering the album, or the name of the band which made it…
Jimmmmm
ps: What I’m really pissed off about is that Duke took the Hoops tourney spot from my alma mater, Syracuse. Both went 22-10. Syracuse came into the tourney winners of nine of twelve; Duke came in winners of four of eleven and got skunked in the ACC conference tourney.
Still bitter about it. And Syracuse not making it to the Lax brackets this year for the first time since the year after Reagan was shot.
Bad time to be Orange.
Rome Again
I hate you all!

Only if you spent that time period stuck in some Musical Hell where evil radios vomitted Top 40’s schlock into the air.

And Heart. Who invited the chicks to the sausage party?
Full-bodied bellow? I’ve never heard that phrase used to describe “tuneless, hammy bullshit.” Sammy FTW.
Presumably auditioning for roles in “Aquanet & Spandex: A History of Shitty Music That I’ll Never Admit I Like,” alongside Ratt, Cinderella, Poison, et al.
Jake
Oh yes. Forgive me. I completely forgot how progressive and original VH became with Hagar at the mic.
Yup. This what I’ve come to expect from a bunch of French bread & brie chomping America haters. Next you’ll be claiming Garth Brooks is country music.
The Other Steve
Don’t anybody dis on Journey.
The Other Steve
Someone over at dKos started the tune… someone needs to finish it.
“He’s a Fox News Hero, Got stars in his eyes.”
RSA
Actually, I’d leave out Cheap Trick and Queen, because of their (a) sense of irony and (b) evidence of talent. Meatloaf stays for lack of the latter, Frampton for lack of the former. Add .38 Special. I’d add another, but searching my memory too long for guitar-hero anthem bands may cause me to go into convulsions.
demimondian
Can I suggest _Rush_ as another guitar band that should have been banned?
demimondian
Hey, nobody’s perfect. For my part, I should ask your pardon for not being properly…appreciative…of the inimitable contributions of the vocal stylings of David Lee Roth. Surely, he was one of the great, truly spandexed ones among us.
jake
And don’t you forget it. As I token of my forgiveness I shall overlook your misguided comment about Rush. [haughty sniff]
Banzai Bunny
Dudes, Ratt is on tour! Can you imagine still trying to milk that after twenty years?
“Juke Box Hero” tries to hard to be epic. At least the Styx tune has some humor to it. Humor displaces enough of the cheese for the win.

fyi, the rocklahoma lineup is white lion, y&t, slaughter, quiet riot, ratt, and poison.
and that’s just friday night.
jackyl, great white (but not great white, which would complete the greatwhitelionsnake triumphrat) l.a. guns, britny fox, winger, dokken, and ..oh hell yea, twisted sister to close down the show on sunday.

Oh man, this is the very pinnacle of cheeze coated pop metal. Three nights with one or two original members of bands that shouldn’t have been put together in the first place lip-synching along to a DAT machine. Unless it’s a bunch of guys who bought the rights to the band name l-sing along to a DAT machine. All you need is Shammy Hagar to round out this musical debacle, although that would likely turn OK into a hair spray flavoured black hole of trite chord progressions, cliched drum fills and shrieking.
Now, if they could arrange a Britny Fox/Britney Spears smack-down I’d buy tickets for myself and all of my friends!
AkaDad
Agreed. I’d so attend that concert.
I’ve seen Twisted Sister, Skid Row, Dokken, and Vince Neil w/Motley Crue. Damn, I’m old.
AkaDad
Rush was awesome in concert. Neil Peart is hands down the best drummer I’ve ever seen and heard.
demimondian
Some of the newer European metal hair bands can give him a run for his money. Edguy’s drummer is pretty sharp, for instance, both with Edguy and with Avantasia. And Sonata Arctica’s is just flat out amazing.
AkaDad
I’ve never heard of them. I have no choice but to check them out now.
conumbdrum
Yeah, the Duke jocks are gaping assholes, let there be no doubt… but derision must also be levied on media gorgon Nancy Grace, who achieved startling new depths of human indecency with her “coverage” of the Duke debacle. I kid you not, friends – it was like watching her dive headlong into a vat of raw sewage and gorge on the contents, emitting bestial grunts of ecstasy the while.
Check out Jon Stewart’s much-deserved takedown of Grace after the charges were dismissed… a Daily Show classic. If Nancy had even an ounce of dignity, she’d have handed in her resignation the day after it aired.
ConservativelyLiberal
Puke Box Zero and Too Much Slime On My Ass are both perfectly cheesy. They both suck eggs…
I agree on Cheap Trick not belonging on that list, and the same with Heart. Both have good music that has a sound all its own. I think the later Heart started to suck, but early Heart was pretty good.
One that should be added is The Pretenders, their name said it all. Chrissy has a voice that could drive nails through glass. Another one to add to the list is Warrant, cheesy rock at its cheesiest.
Tim F.
The Who might be all right, but they should apologize for Tommy. Nobody tried and failed to match The Wall as spectacularly as The Who.
Danelectro, I don’t see the Nuge anywhere on that lineup. Either that tour sucks or it’s boar season.
jb
Yes “Hot Air and Ill-Informed Banter” is what you get when the ill-informed here at BJ call the Duke guys pigs and racists.
They are not racist. Kim Roberts the 2nd stripper (prostitute was her day job) propositioned several of the players who turned her down. She ended up firing off a “litte dicked white-boy” taunt at one of the players. Another one came back at her with a Chris Rock punch-line about “Thank your grandpa for my cotton shirt.” That was the only racial remark made. The two impartial witnesses (neighbor and taxi driver) never heard any N-word being used. That was a bogus allegation the two ex-con prostitutes made up. The one black guy on the team says his teammates aren’t racist. But what does he know.
So everyone who went to a beer party or bachelor party where there are strippers is a pig? Geez, high standards here. Burn Vegas to the ground it’s evil.
Never mind the criminal DA Nifong and the equally criminal Durham PD who framed the college boys. Nifong so he could win an election earn a massive pension and get back the tens of thousands of dollars he lent his about to lose campaing. And the Durham PD falsified reports and did everthing they could to frame the college boys. Never mind. The college boys are the pigs. The pigs aren’t pigs. Right.
Dulcie
Um, Tim – you do know that Tommy was released before the Wall was, don’t you?
tBone
Britny vs. Britney? Awesome. But who should I root for? The formerly pretty quasi-musicians with a history of substance abuse or the formerly pretty quasi-musician with a history of substance abuse?
Dulcie
Both songs are cheesy, but for different reasons. Too Much Time On My Hands is cheesy because Styx was a cheesy band. Anyone remember “Babe”? That was the slow dancing song from my senior year in high school…*shudder* These are the same guys who brought the world Damn Yankees – I will never forgive them for that.
Jukebox Hero – I went to see Foreigner during the Foreigner 4 tour. They actually had a giant jukebox that inflated at the end of the song, complete with shiny sparklers. There were two concerts that day, Foreigner and The Police. I’ve been kicking myself for going to the wrong concert ever since.
jake
Yep, and The Kink’s cover of Van Halen’s You Really Got Me was a disaster.
[brandishes cane at Tim F.] Go study your rock history y’ little whipper snapper! Oooh me back!

And, my God, it was such a travesty when Warren Zevon covered _Hasten Down the Wind_ in his last album. After all, it was the theme writeen by smoe second rate pop princess.

For my generation, fuzziness would be due to past drug use, not technology.
The Other Steve
jb,
Take your anti-semantic crap and go home!
Paul L.
Wow, great comeback.
Could you refute any of his points?
Bombadil
What points?
Fledermaus
Wait a sec, so the ad says that they deserve a standing O for not raping anyone? My, how standards have fallen
Bombadil
It’s all the leftie feel-gooders’ fault. Everyone gets a trophy just for participating in the soccer tournament. No one keeps score in the t-ball games. And you get a standing O for not raping anybody.
Damn liberals.
Paul L.
A) Two of the accused were not there when the racist remark occurred.
B) Kim Roberts started the racial taunts.
C) Any man who has watches strippers at a party is a pig.
Which illustrates a double standard,
Do not judge the accuser because she is a erotic dancer.
However you can judge the accused because they were party to hiring erotic dancers.
You are right. they deserve nothing as does anyone exonerated by the Innocence Project.
Bombadil
It appears that Paul L is also guilty of producing anti-semantic crap.
Punchy
Like the German band Accept. Check out their classic, “Fast as a Shark”. You’d swear the drummer had to have snorted 4 lines, smoked two rocks, and drank a 40oz of Red Bull to play that fast and that long.
Paul L.
So anti-semantic means something you can not refute.
Bombadil
Exactly. There’s no need to try to refute you when you post something meaningless.
Jake
By George I think he’s … starting to get it! Of course you can refute something that illogical and meaningless, but at least he is aware of the existence of illogical and meaningless things. Can self-enlightenment be far off?
I say it is just around the corner and the forces of ignorance are in their last throes.
Paul L.
Why is what I posted illogical?
