Harriet Miers has submitted her resignation:

Harriet Miers, President Bush’s failed Supreme Court nominee and longtime adviser, on Thursday submitted her resignation as White House counsel.

White House press secretary Tony Snow said the president reluctantly accepted her resignation, which takes effect Jan. 31. He said a search for a successor is under way.

Bush nominated Miers in October 2005 to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, but she dropped out under fire from conservatives who questioned her qualifications and would not support her.

Asked why she was leaving, Snow said: “Basically, she has been here six years.”

Basically, faced with the prospect of defending six years this President’s legal (and, perhaps, illegal) maneuverings in front of a justifiably angry Democratic majority eager to dish out some serious oversight, even this legal genius (in the eyes of Hugh Hewitt) decided it was time to go. And really, who can blame her? In the annals of history, ‘failed supreme court nominee’ sounds a helluva lot better than ‘indicted longtime Bush advisor.’

    Rats to ship: “We’re out.”

I’m beginning to think the Rumsfeld resignation might have been a dash for the back door rather than a kick out the window.

We can only hope the small step back stems into a full route. I’d love to see Bush’s staff go the way of Katherine Harris’s.

    Breaking what law?

violations of the 4th amendment as follows:

    Warrantless Surveillance
In a signing statement declaring the government has a right to go through private mail without a warrant

Sanctioned “Interrogation methods” using techniques domestic law regards as torture. See Abu Ghraib and the Federal War Crimes Act.
    Signing statements in general
Other as yet to be discovered crimes which the lap-dog 109th allowed
Providing false evidence to congress (regarding Iraq).
Rendition of suspects to countries known for torture
Accessory to leaking an undercover CIA operatives Identity

and again this is just the KNOWN list. Imagine what happens when we start hearing about the oil/energy company dirty laundry that Cheney has. Not to mention all the lovely gems that will start appearing once real oversight begins. Probably even safe to say he’ll refuse to answer subpoenas and appear under oath which is an impeachable offense if I am not mistaken.

Again, completely off topic, but something I found that was a hot topic a few weeks back.

Sometimes finding out the truth doesn’t make you feel better.

BAGHDAD (AP) — The Interior Ministry acknowledged Thursday that an Iraqi police officer whose existence had been denied by the Iraqis and the U.S. military is in fact an active member of the force, and said he now faces arrest for speaking to the media.

Ministry spokesman Brig. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, who had previously denied there was any such police employee as Capt. Jamil Hussein, said in an interview that Hussein is an officer assigned to the Khadra police station, as had been reported by The Associated Press.

The captain, whose full name is Jamil Gholaiem Hussein, was one of the sources for an AP story in late November about the burning and shooting of six people during a sectarian attack at a Sunni mosque.

Hussein appears to have fallen afoul of a new Iraqi push, encouraged by some U.S. advisers, to more closely monitor the flow of information about the country’s violence, and strictly enforce regulations that bar all but authorized spokesmen from talking to media.

The Rove Playbook is alive and well in Iraq.

The problem is not the chaos, the problem is the messengers. So let’s shoot a couple until the rest get the message. Fuckers.

You forgot “nuking from orbit.” Let’s keep all of our options on the table.

Good point. It’s the only way to be sure.

They don’t send the poor, chucklehead.

True dat. The salary for an E-4 Specialist in Iraq is $250,000 a year. Officers get, like, a billion or something. Those guys just get cash thrown at them in giant sacks. Lucky bastards.

BAGHDAD (AP)—The Interior Ministry acknowledged Thursday that an Iraqi police officer whose existence had been denied by the Iraqis and the U.S. military is in fact an active member of the force, and said he now faces arrest for speaking to the media.

Ok, now which right-wing blogger/columnist gets to eat crow on this one? Is it Malkin?

Nope Malkin is going to be eating something quite different.. And apparantly she had more reasons to risk the lives of the soldiers she wanted to embed with…

    Gold Star,

Malkin has her foot planted squarely in her mouth as we speak. She ain’t said a peep other than to post the story and say “Checking it out, Moving forward…”

I love watching the blowhards get gutted.

@ the people who mentioned Fastway.

Dave King who sung for that band, now fronts Flogging Molly. A most excellent band.

I’ve actually found some good metal the past few years with System of a Down, Disturbed, and Flyleaf.

if you like that old-school Sabbath/CoC/thrash sound, check out The Sword (the band).

That’s ok. I’m confident the officer will “disappear” for a few years, then turn up admitting the whole thing was a hoax on his part – while showing a disturbing phobia of water and boards – before disappearing for a second time, never to be heard from again, presumably to live out his life in aesthetic seclusion.

What’s far more likely is that George W. Bush wouldn’t trust a woman to keep him out of jail that he trusted to protect the Constitution. Which shows you his priorities.

Wonder if Karl Rove gave her the old “war consigliari” speech.

‘Keep him out of jail’ hyperbole notwithstanding, you’ve made a fair observation there. Really disturbing that he nominated her for the SCOTUS.
