Woke up this morning to the power going on an off, and then I heard a weirdly familiar metallic grinding sound from outside. Got up, looked out the window, and we had 8 inches of snow and what I was hearing was the snowplow.
Internet out, cable out, lights flickering on and off, and it took two hours just to get downtown. The snow itself wasn’t that much of a problem, but since all the trees have their leaves and have not turned, they were able to catch a lot more snow, and the weight of it all downed tree limbs everywhere. That and the car wrecks really screwed things up.
Weird. I don’t ever remember it snowing this much this early in the season.
*** Update ***
To those of you who think this is a bad thing and are using this as an occasion to taunt me, don’t. I LOVE winter. I will have my windows open all but the coldest of days in January. I look forward to snow. I turned my heat on only 2-3 times last year. I love snow and snowy weather.
Mary
Huh. No snow in Toronto yet, and it’s just cold enough to piss off the cats when I offer to take them out. Where are you?
Emma Zahn
Oh well, so much for the “warmer than normal winter” predictions being batted about when fuel prices began spiking.
Jack Roy
Ugh. It’s raining balls up here in New York; I’ve heard speculation it’s due to washout from the hurricanes.
Barry
Jack, I’d believe that; IMHO, we get rain in Michigan a few days after a Gulf hurricane, and I’ve seen satellite photos of clouds where the spiral arms were visible up to Maine, from a Gulf Hurricane several days after landfall.
John, where do you live? I saw on the Weather Underground that there seemed to be snow/freezing rain in W. Penn. this morning.
docG
Its just another sign of the Apocalypse, John. To avoid damnation, start supporting Harriet for the Supreme Court immediately!
Yours evangelically,
Lines
Bill Bennett just said its because West Virginia is full of sinners and heathens and you deserved it.
Bill O’Reilly said its because of the Pakistan earthquake.
Jody
Yesterday, it snowed on me as I drove along I-64 around the New River.
Krista
Funny, it’s just raining here in Nova Scotia. Have I mentioned that it delights me when it snows in the U.S. and not here? It’s due solely to the time I worked at a tourist bureau, and we had at least 5 separate incidents of Americans arriving with winter gear, skis, the works…in July.
Slartibartfast
Global cooling, definitely.
Slartibartfast
See if we give you any Gulf Stream to play with anymore.
Krista
Allow me my moment of schadenfreude, will ya? As soon as the snow DOES hit here, it won’t leave until May.
Tim F
In answer to the questions, John lives in Morgantown, W. Va. Here in Pittsburgh we’re getting the same weather but just on the other side of freezing.
JamesBond007
This freak weather is obviously a result of global warming changing the flow of the gulfstream. We must sign on to Kyoto pronto, or else!
Joey
You should have beat them with their ski poles and then forced them to immediately leave your country.
Krista
Joey – It was tempting. What I really wanted to do was tell them that we were in the midst of a freak heat wave and that the week before, there had been 10 inches of fresh powder down everywhere.
But I was only 18 and much sweeter than I am now. So I advised them that the weather here is not much different than it would be in New England, and then directed them to the mall so that they could buy some weather-appropriate clothing.
Joey
You were entirely too kind, though I guess that’s not a bad thing. I really can’t comprehend that kind of stupidity. I mean, I even look at the weather channel to see what the weather is going to be like when I go a few counties away, and that’s ignoring the entire common sense aspect that, you know, Canada isn’t Antarctica and they do have more than one season.
Northman
We got snow here on Oct. 2nd, which unfortunately isn’t really early for Baffin Island. Stayed cold for a couple of weeks, then warmed up to just above freezing and has turned everthing into a sea of mud over the permafrost.
Much preferred the snow.
Have to agree with Krista, though. Love when there’s snow in West Virginia and none here.
Krista
Northman – well, I see you’re aptly named. My toque is off to you, my friend, for having the fortitude to live up there.
Opus

Oh my gosh — a fellow traveler. I am currently in the midst of getting a job “up north” just so I can have snow every year. I sleep with the windows cracked open even when I’m in northern Wisconsin and it’s below freezing, Blankets, blankets, blankets. Nothing better.
Krista
Opus – you and John…cheerful crackpots, both of you. Try enjoying winter when it lasts for pretty much over half of the year. Oh well, to each their own. I dont’ mind the snow so much, due to my love for snowshoeing. I don’t even mind the cold so much, as long as it’s not cold, windy and snowing all at the same time. It’s the wretched, wretched dark. Every year it drives me ’round the bend. If it weren’t for the mass quantities of wine and my high-speed connection, I’d go completely bonkers every November.

Snow in OCTOBER i,ll bet the eco-fraks at GREENPEACE will be yelling GLOBAL WARMING whats next for these green nit wits?
Jody
Several years ago, I got snowed on on the 4th of July in the States. Was up in the Tetons though, so I don’t know if that counts particularly as I was also hiking around chest high drifts of snow/ice that hadn’t melted from the previous winter.
Dave Ryan
This was how bad it was at my apartment.
Dave Ryan
I also managed to miss class because the shuttle service from my dorm/apartment had to close down because of bad roads and wrecks, my power was out, my internet was out, and because the PRT had shut down (our campus transport system) and there were mass queues at the bus stops.
rayabacus
I thought there was something strange about you.

That’s where you sell them quadruple-priced summer clothing. You justify the cost by pointing out that it’s hard to get that, way up there.
Of course, it’s not really their fault – they see the temperatures in the teens or single digits, and they expect snow :)
