Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Everybody saw this coming.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Giving up is unforgivable.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

I Heart Howard Dean

This made my day:

On MSNBC’s “Hardball” yesterday, Dean sounded like the presidential candidate of yore, as he lashed an alleged “culture of corruption” in the Republican Party, said GOP leaders are putting money “in their own pockets,” and added that “I don’t think it’s very credible” that Vice President Cheney was not aware of the leaking of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity. During his broadside, he bemoaned how Bush’s “MO” is to “discredit your opponents and attack them personally.”

In one eyebrow-raising moment, Dean invoked a crude phrase usually reserved for the locker room when urging Bush to make public Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers’s White House records. “I think with a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, you can’t play, you know, hide the salami, or whatever it’s called,” he said.

Bwahaha. What could he possibly have meant to say?

The Mears pick is kind of a big Fuck You to the dignity of the court, so maybe Dean got exactly what he was looking for.

Damn, Dean seems to always manages to say something that distracts from the message he is trying to get across. Hide the fuckin salami? Jesus Howard.

The DNC needs to get one of those Talking Points Ken dolls and send it to the Japanese for some reverse engineeering. Then, they can take the technology and implant it into Dean, who could desperately use some re-wiring to stay on message.

I think it was a reference to the Gannon/Bush Affair. Dean was attempting to reinsert (!) this important topic back into the body politic. One can understand the groans coming from the right. They’ve felt that pain before.

I’m quite confident that if Dean hadn’t uttered a malapropism, not a single person would be quoting his talking point today. You can’t necessarily win.

Perhaps Dean was trying to reiterate the unfortunate ‘Bush packing’ phrase from a few days ago but got confused.

Maybe he was just highlighting the fact that Miers is a 60-year old, never-been-married evangelical Christian. Apparently, to get a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court from Bush, it is important not to play hide the salami.

What Howard was referring to was an actually college prank where someone moves out of a dorm or apartment and hides smelly salami in secret places so that, in a couple of days, it starts to smell really rotten.

I think that was the actual point he was trying to make… that things hidden could begin really stink after awhile.

I like salami. All kinds of salami: Italian salami, Jewish salami, even German salami sometimes if I’m particularly hungry. People who hide their salami from me are not my friends when I have a particular need for salami.

We just had an embarassing and idiotic pep rally for the war conducted by a boneheaded president … and we want to talk about Dean and a salami joke?

He always slips up and says something worthy of ridicule. So does the president.

But….Dean’s interview sounded like the beginning of a democratic strategy/agenda/plan/backbone starting to emerge.
    1) These guys are corrupt, not just Delay and Frist or the leakers, there are others that aren’t on the news: Abramof, Safavian, the entire Ohio GOP
    2) We have to get out of iraq. What’s our plan? We wouldn’t be there. But we are, and there are several alternatives, we need to pick the best one that includes getting the troops out of iraq (Not immediately, but soon)
    3) Fiscal Liberals are better than these Fiscal Conservatives
    4) Did I mention Delay, Frist, Abramoff, Safavian, Ohio, Scooter and Turdblossom? Did I mention Blunt seems to be as dirty as Delay?
    5)YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHHHH!

A phrase you are going to be hearing a lot of till the midterm elections, “Culture of Corruption”.

The Dems have to get on message. They have to hammer that home every fuckin time they open their mouth. They have to shove the corruption of the GOP down their greedy little throats. Some may be reticent because of their own ethical “lapses” lets say, but the are being handed a huge gift here and if they dont’ run with it they deserve to lose.

ROFLMAO. Or whatever it’s called. You see it was a reductio ad absurdum, or whatever it’s called.

Dean has a certain Mr. Magoo quality about him. Can you imagine him trudging past the water kooler, donut in mouth, coffee in hand:

    Someone:… hide the salami…

Dean to Self: Yeah, GOP, bunch of damn godfathers.
