This time for reals, although I don’t even feel like it is game day. I sort of feel like this is a scrimmage or a pre-season game, because I honestly have no expectation that we might win. I guess this is what it is like to be a Browns fan.
In other news, memeorandum’s top story is a bunch of wingnuts who couldn’t tell you what a Pearson’s correlation is (or, for that matter, spell correlation) are claiming that the modeling done by some of the smartest people in the world is fake and a scandal. How do they come to that conclusion?

No, they come to that conclusion in part because of sloppy science reporting by what are supposed to be the newspapers of record.
I presume that, Jonathan Leake, Environment Editor of the Times of London either understands a Pearson’s correlation, or has access to people who do.
And the arrogance of some of the climate scientists involved hasn’t helped their case.
This is the kind of behavior that you would expect of the Patriots’ head coach, not sober-minded scientists.

To be fair, the emails were heavily chopped up, so I’m not so sure I’d be drawing too many conclusions just yet. In addition, it’s entirely reasonable for a climate scientist to talk about organising boycotts of global warming denialist publications.
Anyway, as RealClimate.org has demonstrated, there is a huge amount of freely available raw data. The problem isn’t that, it’s how the data is misinterpreted and misused to imply that global warming isn’t occurring when it so obviously is.

Jones did not ‘boast of using statistical “tricks” (with scare quotes, no less!) to obliterate apparent declines in global temperature’. Since there have been no apparent declines in global temperature, any tricks would be unnecessary in any case. What was referred to in the email is that tree ring proxy data have diverged from instrumental records (i.e., the actual temperatures) over the past 40 years, and so Jones added in the actual temperatures to show the divergence.

I don’t know that the emails were heavily chopped up. And the scientists involved, some of whom have been asked to resign by other climate scientists, have not denied any of the emails or some of the more serious charges that they were cooking the presentation of some of the data to pretty it up (which is not the same thing as saying that they were faking the original data).
There are also problems caused by the fact that a weatherman at the BBC had copies of the emails for months and just ignored them.
I don’t agree. But also part of the issue here are claims that some of the scientists wanted to boycott publications which published articles by global warming skeptics, which is not the same thing as boycotting denialist publications.

Live by the InterTubes, die by the InterTubes. It’s not about the private conduct of scientists, it’s about charges that scientists were deliberately falsifying aspects of their research, stifling dissent and clumsily organizing their own kinds of smear campaigns.
I don’t think this stuff is a huge deal in the long run to the science of global warming; but it is an unnecessary distraction, and has energized all kinds of opposition to even the idea of global warming. And here it may have a significant impact on the political and economic decisions that will be made in the coming months.

I’m proposing a new NFL rule:
If at any time in the first half a receiver catches a pass for the first down (but not a score) and celebrates, mugs for airtime, makes the arm point in the “First Down” direction, he gets fined like $50,000.
The team doesn’t get a penalty, but the player gets the fine and the monies go to the NFL’s official charity, or something.
If it’s 3:00 minutes to go before the end of game, I get a little mugging. That’s cool.
But in the first half? The game will not be decided on your one 8 yard catch and tackle at the 38 in the 1st quarter.

I appreciate the various links, even though I don’t need them. The problem, as I noted, is that much of the news media of record (The Times of London, for example) got aspects of the story wrong—not wingnuts—and this has led to a feeding frenzy among denialists.
The other problem is that some of the scientists involved have added to the problem by some of their attitude and actions, to such a degree that even other reputable climate scientists have called for their resignation.
The damage caused is neither permanent, nor beyond repair. But it is real. And it is not just a matter of ignorant wingnuts reinforcing their stupidity. Over the Thanksgiving holidays, I ran across a number talk radio stations playing up the “false data,” and only two reports, both on NPR, giving a more full perspective.

I never said that I took Leake at his word, or suggested that anyone else do so. Again, as I noted (and let me write this s-l-o-w-l-y): if the major news organizations and newspapers of record don’t get the story right, it is harder for the truth to ever catch up to the lies.
Far more people who know about the slapdown that the authors of Freakonomics received about their climate change ignorance because they read about it in The New Yorker than read the original open letter posted in RealClimate.org.

Both went way down the ladder. S and A is out of business I think and the only thing saving Red Lobster is their garlic-cheese biscuits. Holy balls they are good. Their fried seafood is mediocre but priced right. So, if you want to take the family out for something better than Long John Silver but not break the bank, RL is your place.
And I’ve never seen the TV adaptations w/ Alec Guiness but I’m a big AG fan. They were just before my time and I find most things done in that format and technology get extremely dated, extremely fast.

The reporting I’ve seen on the CRU emails indicate that some of them discuss destroying information.
I’m sure much of the emails can be explained in context, and distorted out of context, but this really appears to be a fairly big deal and I suspect will end the careers of the scientists involved.
We’ll see after a formal inquiry is done.
We’ll see. I know how academia works. I know researchers jealousy guard their information and refuse to release it to others until they’ve had their own papers published. Maybe this is just those egos at play.

I suspect the answer is the same in both cases. Price pressures combined with a retreating demographic.
They started using lower quality product to satisfy operating margins, pushed their clientele away, started taking less care of the physical property – (in Steak n Ale’s case the salad bar would be left in disarray, not presentable, etc. and each table got one loaf of their black bread).
In RL’s case, the rise of Joe’s Crab Shack (Landry’s chain then sold to JH Whitney) probably played as much of a part as overexpansion during a couple tight spending timeframes.
When the crunch comes down on a family budget they don’t think how they can skimp in order to afford fried shrimp.
I could offer a more detailed analysis but…umm…football.

What’s funny is that this is exactly the problem that came up two months ago with the slew of articles pointing out that, omg, it’s cooler than 1998. Taking the time to formulate a response that explains what’s actually going on has the effect of giving the criticism credibility. Same dilemma happened w/ Kerry’s swiftboatgate stuff.
I think the best response is to counter “no warming since someone graduating high school was in first grade!” with similar anecdotal formulations of the problem. Gore’s “snows of Kilamajaro” remarks are going in the right direction. Also, “5 of the 10 warmest years on record in this decade,” “hottest decade in hundreds of years ,” “most CO2 in the atmosphere since man discovered fire” etc. Climate change “skeptics” are going to accuse you of lying no matter how honest and rigorous you are. There’s too much effort right now being expended trying to make statements about climate change unimpeachable and it winds up as overqualified nonsense.

@Notorious P.A.T.: Because he was sentenced to jail for the rest of his life (basically) at 18 for crimes that didn’t involve killing people. He did accidentally clock his mom with a lock in court once, though… probably good indication that rehabilitation would be difficult.
I think the sad thing here vis a vis criminal justice is that this guy has clearly needed psychiatric help for many years and either hasn’t gotten any or hasn’t gotten nearly enough. It appears there was cause to institutionalize him many times over… but in our law-and-order society we frown on giving sick people help and instead put them in jail with people who can actually be helped.

In college I bought Madden ‘94 for Sega. We played the hell out of that game. Barry Foster was literally unstoppable. It took like 15 guys to tackle him. My roommate would always be Steelers and I’d be Lions and whoever had the ball last would win because you could NOT tackle Foster. Maybe it was a bug but his spin move would just send defenders flying, even if he just stood there using it over and over until every opponent had been shed and he could proceed downfield with impunity. It frustrated me at first but eventually I just had to laugh.

I always point people to my late mother’s example. She often worked two crummy jobs, since she had 3 kids and no child support. She cleaned houses, she worked at K-Mart, she emptied bedpans at the local mental hospital. We were excited when she got her first “white collar” job at the town newspaper—but even there she never made more than $14K a year. Ever. With three kids. Too bad she was so lazy—if she’d just worked harder, she wouldn’t have died at 52, dead broke with no health insurance.
I have seen this belief SO often and it always gives me the kind of tight chested rage that really needs cathartic violence. Fuck those people. Fuck them and their sick idea of Christianity.

When I first saw Tinker Tailor, it burst upon my consciousness like a supernova. Made an instant LeCarre fan of me: I read everything he wrote up until… well, I skipped Constant Gardener, but that’s the only one I haven’t read, and that’s just because I don’t think I could bear it.

Oh, well. Don’t usually care one way or the other, but I was really pulling for Dixon—he played very well. Shame his one big mistake cost the game. Ouch. Still, he did damn well for a 3rd stringer with no time on the field. Damn well. The kid has talent.

Not a Steelers fan whatsoever, but thought Dixon did great. It was nice to see he and the Steelers hold off Baltimore for as long as they did. He deserves a lot of credit.

I pretty much agree with your list earlier in the thread. With some of the various posts about Dickens in mind, I had almost forgotten what a “snot with a heart of gold” Guinness was as Herbert Pocket in the adaptation of Great Expectations.
The book, by the way, was one of the first novels that I read as a kid, and has always been a favorite.

Sigh, that was no fun. Thought they had a chance to win it when the Ravens went for it on 4th and 5. Yuck. I will say that given his level of experience I thought Dixon looked fine. He obviously made some mistakes. Unfortunately the one INT was in overtime. It was “his fault” but there’s no way he was ready to face that kind of defense.
