Steelers Open Thread

This time for reals, although I don’t even feel like it is game day. I sort of feel like this is a scrimmage or a pre-season game, because I honestly have no expectation that we might win. I guess this is what it is like to be a Browns fan.

In other news, memeorandum’s top story is a bunch of wingnuts who couldn’t tell you what a Pearson’s correlation is (or, for that matter, spell correlation) are claiming that the modeling done by some of the smartest people in the world is fake and a scandal. How do they come to that conclusion?

Because shut up, that’s why!

No, they come to that conclusion in part because of sloppy science reporting by what are supposed to be the newspapers of record.

I presume that, Jonathan Leake, Environment Editor of the Times of London either understands a Pearson’s correlation, or has access to people who do.

And the arrogance of some of the climate scientists involved hasn’t helped their case.

In one [email], Jones boasted of using statistical “tricks” to obliterate apparent declines in global temperature. In another he advocated deleting data rather than handing them to climate sceptics. And in a third he proposed organised boycotts of journals that had the temerity to publish papers that undermined the message.

This is the kind of behavior that you would expect of the Patriots’ head coach, not sober-minded scientists.

To be fair, the emails were heavily chopped up, so I’m not so sure I’d be drawing too many conclusions just yet. In addition, it’s entirely reasonable for a climate scientist to talk about organising boycotts of global warming denialist publications.

Anyway, as RealClimate.org has demonstrated, there is a huge amount of freely available raw data. The problem isn’t that, it’s how the data is misinterpreted and misused to imply that global warming isn’t occurring when it so obviously is.

Jones did not ‘boast of using statistical “tricks” (with scare quotes, no less!) to obliterate apparent declines in global temperature’. Since there have been no apparent declines in global temperature, any tricks would be unnecessary in any case. What was referred to in the email is that tree ring proxy data have diverged from instrumental records (i.e., the actual temperatures) over the past 40 years, and so Jones added in the actual temperatures to show the divergence.

Yeah, except for the guys I’ve met at Cal Tech, MIT and a few other places, no, I haven’t met too many of them. I was making a bit of a joke to connect the climate change stuff to football.

To be fair, the emails were heavily chopped up, so I’m not so sure I’d be drawing too many conclusions just yet.

I don’t know that the emails were heavily chopped up. And the scientists involved, some of whom have been asked to resign by other climate scientists, have not denied any of the emails or some of the more serious charges that they were cooking the presentation of some of the data to pretty it up (which is not the same thing as saying that they were faking the original data).

There are also problems caused by the fact that a weatherman at the BBC had copies of the emails for months and just ignored them.

In addition, it’s entirely reasonable for a climate scientist to talk about organising boycotts of global warming denialist publications.

I don’t agree. But also part of the issue here are claims that some of the scientists wanted to boycott publications which published articles by global warming skeptics, which is not the same thing as boycotting denialist publications.

You have a problem with things like the fourier trick?

Are we talking about Tiger Woods again?

gnomedad —There are a lot of climate scientists. Some of them are arrogant. BFD. That’s why science has peer review and competition. Live by the InterTubes, die by the InterTubes. It’s not about the private conduct of scientists, it’s about charges that scientists were deliberately falsifying aspects of their research, stifling dissent and clumsily organizing their own kinds of smear campaigns.

I don’t think this stuff is a huge deal in the long run to the science of global warming; but it is an unnecessary distraction, and has energized all kinds of opposition to even the idea of global warming. And here it may have a significant impact on the political and economic decisions that will be made in the coming months.

If at any time in the first half a receiver catches a pass for the first down (but not a score) and celebrates, mugs for airtime, makes the arm point in the “First Down” direction, he gets fined like $50,000.
The team doesn’t get a penalty, but the player gets the fine and the monies go to the NFL’s official charity, or something.

If it’s 3:00 minutes to go before the end of game, I get a little mugging. That’s cool.
But in the first half? The game will not be decided on your one 8 yard catch and tackle at the 38 in the 1st quarter.

I appreciate the various links, even though I don’t need them. The problem, as I noted, is that much of the news media of record (The Times of London, for example) got aspects of the story wrong—not wingnuts—and this has led to a feeding frenzy among denialists.

The other problem is that some of the scientists involved have added to the problem by some of their attitude and actions, to such a degree that even other reputable climate scientists have called for their resignation.

The damage caused is neither permanent, nor beyond repair. But it is real. And it is not just a matter of ignorant wingnuts reinforcing their stupidity. Over the Thanksgiving holidays, I ran across a number talk radio stations playing up the “false data,” and only two reports, both on NPR, giving a more full perspective.

Their fried seafood is mediocre but priced right. So, if you want to take the family out for something better than Long John Silver but not break the bank, RL is your place.
And I’ve never seen the TV adaptations w/ Alec Guiness but I’m a big AG fan. They were just before my time and I find most things done in that format and technology get extremely dated, extremely fast.

    The Other Steve

The reporting I’ve seen on the CRU emails indicate that some of them discuss destroying information.

I’m sure much of the emails can be explained in context, and distorted out of context, but this really appears to be a fairly big deal and I suspect will end the careers of the scientists involved.

We’ll see after a formal inquiry is done.

We’ll see. I know how academia works. I know researchers jealousy guard their information and refuse to release it to others until they’ve had their own papers published. Maybe this is just those egos at play.

    @Brachiator:

Earlier today on This Week, Paul Krugman made the point that several of the scientists communicated with each other in a kind of casual fashion that easily gets misinterpreted or misunderstood when viewed out of context.

Given the scientific illiteracy of the MSM, this story will be twisted, mangled, and butchered a million different ways beyond recognition by neanderthals like Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough, Wolf Blitzer, and Anderson Cooper.

@asiangrrlMN: Which one, RL or SnA?
I suspect the answer is the same in both cases. Price pressures combined with a retreating demographic.
They started using lower quality product to satisfy operating margins, pushed their clientele away, started taking less care of the physical property – (in Steak n Ale’s case the salad bar would be left in disarray, not presentable, etc. and each table got one loaf of their black bread).
In RL’s case, the rise of Joe’s Crab Shack (Landry’s chain then sold to JH Whitney) probably played as much of a part as overexpansion during a couple tight spending timeframes.
When the crunch comes down on a family budget they don’t think how they can skimp in order to afford fried shrimp.

What’s funny is that this is exactly the problem that came up two months ago with the slew of articles pointing out that, omg, it’s cooler than 1998. Taking the time to formulate a response that explains what’s actually going on has the effect of giving the criticism credibility. Same dilemma happened w/ Kerry’s swiftboatgate stuff.

I think the best response is to counter “no warming since someone graduating high school was in first grade!” with similar anecdotal formulations of the problem. Gore’s “snows of Kilamajaro” remarks are going in the right direction. Also, “5 of the 10 warmest years on record in this decade,” “hottest decade in hundreds of years ,” “most CO2 in the atmosphere since man discovered fire” etc. Climate change “skeptics” are going to accuse you of lying no matter how honest and rigorous you are. There’s too much effort right now being expended trying to make statements about climate change unimpeachable and it winds up as overqualified nonsense.

    From the Arkansas Times:

Washington autthorities are seeking Maurice Clemmons, 37, for questioning in the slaying of four Washington police officers. Clemmons is wanted in Arkansas, where he has an extensive criminal record, according to unnamed sources in early reports. Clemmons also is mentioned in this report.—-
My source says the man wanted for questioning is believed to be the same Maurice Clemmons as an Arkansas ex-con with an extensive record of armed robbery who became a subject of some controversy for political reasons. That Maurice Clemmons was among those who became controversial for having received a commuted sentence from then-Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2000 (of a 35-year armed robbery sentence), then went on to commit other crimes. This has the potential of making Wayne Dumond look like a small-timer

Kenny is certain that the guys who mugged Dan Rather had mistaken Rather for him. He’s no sure of who they were, but is sure they were trying to find out how he was able to get Russian TV to the US, which turned out to be thru satellites.

Maurice Clemmons received a 35-year sentence in the early 1990s for armed robbery and theft. His sentence was commuted in May 2000, and he was let out three months later.
_ The following March, Clem-mons committed two armed robberies and other crimes and was sentenced to 10 years. You’d think they’d keep him locked up after that, but no: He was paroled last March and is now wanted for aggravated robbery.

Of course the quality of the audio and video is not quite the same quality, but at least you can see all the songs that were cut out of the HBO broadcast (and there are quite a few as they had to cut down 10+ hours of music from two nights). BTW - which Jerry Lee Lewis opener did they show: Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On or Great Balls of Fire?

  185. 185

    Max

    Please someone kill me now…

Mick Jagger and U2 are doing “Gimme Shelter”. Sounds good, right? Hold on, there is also Fergie on stage singing.

    Jesus take the wheel.

  186. 186

    Corner Stone

@MBSS: You and I are done here.

  187. 187

Damn, Mick Jagger, Bono, U2, Black Eyes Peas – Gimme Shelter.. we’re all getting old… but DAMN what a concert

Back to football, the Pittsburgh punter’s name is Sepulveda. Should that be pronounced Se-PUL-ve-da or Se-pul-VEE-da?

  189. 189

    Max

    @MattR:

BTW - which Jerry Lee Lewis opener did they show: Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On or Great Balls of Fire?

Great Balls of Fire. Not a bad version. His piano was great, his voice was shaky, but he kicked away the bench at the end, which was pretty RockStar.

  190. 190

    MattR

@Max: That was my guess based on reviews that mentioned the piano bench kick. FWIW, those critics also called Gimme Shelter the highlight of the second night.

  191. 191

    J.W. Hamner

Oooohhh… Ike Taylor got away with some pass interference there…

@JK: If you haven’t seen a revival print of Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm it’s worth going out of your way to do so. It shows at the AFI theater in DC every year or so and is almost always showing somewhere – http://www.in70mm.com/now_showing/index.htm

  194. 194

    JK

    @Max:

Who isn’t performing at this concert?

Unless I’m misinformed, none of the following individuals appeared

Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, David Bowie, Van Morrison, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Petty, Bob Weir, and Phil Lesh.

Not to take anything away from this concert. From the posts on this thread, it sounds great, but many of the individuals who comprise my rock pantheon were missing in action for this event.

  195. 195

    Notorious P.A.T.

    Random memory:

In college I bought Madden ‘94 for Sega. We played the hell out of that game. Barry Foster was literally unstoppable. It took like 15 guys to tackle him. My roommate would always be Steelers and I’d be Lions and whoever had the ball last would win because you could NOT tackle Foster. Maybe it was a bug but his spin move would just send defenders flying, even if he just stood there using it over and over until every opponent had been shed and he could proceed downfield with impunity. It frustrated me at first but eventually I just had to laugh.

  196. 196

    Corner Stone

Dennis (Donna) Dixon for the underthrow!

  197. 197

    JK

    @Z:

Fortunately, I have seen a revival print of Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm. This film just gets better and better with each passing year.

  198. 198

    Max

@MattR: Not sure which night is which, as you can’t tell with the broadcast, but my highlight so far was Metallica and Ray Davies and the CSN stuff. I’m looking forward to Bruce and Billy Joel.

U2 would be great if they would do their old stuff, like Gloria or Sunday Bloody Sunday, but no, they have to do their recent stuff. Right now, they are doing Beautiful Day. That song was played at every Obama rally for 18 months, it’s now an Obama song, no longer a U2 song.

  199. 199

    MattR

@JK: Jeff Beck was there replacing Clapton who had to cancel. Sadly, I am just now discovering all the wonders of Beck (and only because I have a crush on the current bass player in his band, Tal Wilkenfeld)

    @Z:

    Z,

Just for the heck of it, given the fact that you’re using the screen name “Z”, have you ever seen the film Z by Costa Gavras?

  202. 202

    Max

@JK: Jeff Beck played “Superstition” with Stevie Wonder during Steve’s set.

  203. 203

    MattR

@Max: I watched most of the Metallica stuff on Youtube a couple weeks ago. The Lou Reed stuff did not sound great to me, I ignored the Ozzy stuff since I assumed he would sound worse, but the Ray Davies stuff was great.

If you are interested, here is a link to a summary of the second night from Rolling Stone (which has a link to the summary of the first night)

@Max: And now Beck is playing “People get Ready” with Sting.

    @Annie:

Ugh. Sadly, it’s not a joke—it’s the usual bullshit attitude from people who don’t realize how much institutional privilege has helped them get where they are. It’s the myth of meritocracy in action: if you just worked harder, poor people, you would be comfortable like I am!

I always point people to my late mother’s example. She often worked two crummy jobs, since she had 3 kids and no child support. She cleaned houses, she worked at K-Mart, she emptied bedpans at the local mental hospital. We were excited when she got her first “white collar” job at the town newspaper—but even there she never made more than $14K a year. Ever. With three kids. Too bad she was so lazy—if she’d just worked harder, she wouldn’t have died at 52, dead broke with no health insurance.

I have seen this belief SO often and it always gives me the kind of tight chested rage that really needs cathartic violence. Fuck those people. Fuck them and their sick idea of Christianity.

  206. 206

    JK

Don’t forget Guinness’ work as George Smiley in British TV’s adaptations of LeCarre. Brilliant stuff.

Oh, hell, yes! The entire saga is a master class is great acting. And here, great acting is unobtrusive. It never calls attention to itself or is showy or stagy.

With people who do not know that he is a spy, Smiley blends into the woodwork, a harmless shlub. With people who think he is some kind of cop, he is patient and fatherly, helping them to reveal information that they don’t realize that they possess, and being unexpectedly sharp when someone tries to lie to him.

Patrick Stewart appears as Smiley’s nemesis, the Communist master spy Karla. Perversely, he has no lines of dialog during the entire series (or practically none).

“Z” is an extremely kick ass film. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Do yourself a favor and see it at your earliest convenience. And I can I please get a TD to end the football game.

Seems like there ought to be a stigma attached to the use of welfare. A little bit of shame can go a long way toward encouraging people to find jobs. The federal government may think it’s doing people a favor by providing them with access to food, but it’s doing them a disservice if it also robs them of the motivation necessary to break free from dependency.

Maybe Miller can hustle up a bunch of teabaggers to hang outside welfare offices and scream “SHAME!” at those who emerge, accompanied by a barrage of rotten vegetables. No, scratch that last bit; those lowlife welfare bums might take those veggies home and eat them instead of hitting the bricks to beg for work.

Wait, what? He was? I saw Smiley’s People before I became a Patrick Stewart fan, so I didn’t notice, but… wow. Another reason to love those miniseries…miniserieses?

When I first saw Tinker Tailor, it burst upon my consciousness like a supernova. Made an instant LeCarre fan of me: I read everything he wrote up until… well, I skipped Constant Gardener, but that’s the only one I haven’t read, and that’s just because I don’t think I could bear it.

BTW: LeCarre loved Guiness as Smiley:

Le Carré was even more taken by the interpretation of Smiley provided by Alec Guinness, so much so that as he was writing Smiley’s People he found himself visualizing Guinness in the role and incorporated some of the insights afforded by the actor in the sequel to the trilogy.

  299. 299

    General Winfield Stuck

Typical wingnut reaction from Huckpac. It was everybodies fault, not just ours.

Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State. He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, this commutation made him parole eligible and he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time.

Of course, if he hadn’t had his sentence commuted by Huckabee in the first place, none of the henceforth crimes would have happened. and the animal would still be safely (for public) serving a life sentence in an Arkansas prison.
