Wed. Night Open Thread: FTFY

I really wish Steve Gilliard were here today, because only he could do full justice to both Bloomberg’s victory and Corzine’s failure. And while Mr. Gilliard was, IIRC, no fan of Mayor Bloomberg, he would certainly have had some useful if excoriating advice for those goo-goos who are now shocked, shocked that a rich person could be rewarded by New York City voters for a blatant attempt to buy his way into keeping office.

Also (ergo?), Fuck The Fucking Yankees…

For those of you who don’t live in Seattle, here’s a commercial that shows how to run against a winger. Make sure you watch the last few seconds.

I fell in love with Emmylou in the mid 70’s. I first noticed her when I realized that two of my albums were favorites because of her background vocals.

Gosh, I miss Steve, too. Keen insights and a way with words.

I had a post there during the crisis; glad to help out. For those interested, Jen pops up to discourse on cooking with her co-op box. Never know what you might get…

Unlike many, I enjoyed Keith Olbermann’s roundup of the “smartest plays in World Series history.” But then, it seems to me watching sports is all about trudging through the forest until a peak of “great play” appears. Enjoy the journey, sports fans.

I’ve been mostly ignoring the postseason; I’m still recovering from the shock of the Detroit Tigers collapse and the epic one-game playoff against the Twins.

Around here, the election news was mostly dominated by the 58-42 defeat of an effort to raise more property taxes for school funding, which took a huge whack in the state budget for the year which has already started. (The state can no longer tell the K-12s and the universities how much money is coming before the start of the school year, which makes educational budgeting an exercise in guesswork.) Mid-school-year teacher layoffs look inevitable. “Michissippi,” we’re going to rename the state.

Hey, Anne Laurie, re: music: did you see my earlier response about the new Poozies album? (Folk music, five women, Scotland, for those who don’t know them, which is just about everybody in America…)

    The Bearded Blogger

@MikeJ: Bert and Ernie are openly closeted. Maybe Ernie still has to come out to his mom or something, but it’s an open secret. And yeah, it’s not easy being green. The cookie monster may have something progressive to say about marijuana legislation.

@Maxwel: I was privileged to meet Emmylou at a bluegrass festival in Long Beach, Cal. in the early 70’s. She was a backup singer for Linda Ronstadt. She had just completed her first album and Linda invited her to do a couple of songs. I fell in love and I have not changed my mind since then. She is one of my all time favorite performers.

All the political shit, I don’t know about, but I do know this:FTFY!

    @Just Some Fuckhead:

What is the deal with invoking Steve Gilliard with every thread, Anne Laurie? It seems weird and creepy from here. Just curious.

Only the FTFY threads, JSF. I’m not interested in sports, but I really really miss reading Steve Gilliard, who hated the Yankees with the burning fervour only possible to an NYC native. So whenever the World Series intrusion into the general newscasts reminds me about Steinbrenners’ Steroid Stooges, I post FTFY open threads in Mr. Gilliard’s memory, since I was also born in the Bronx, but to a working-class Irish family where cherishing grievances was the preferred memorial.

  44. 44

    Betsy

As I discussed on a late thread with asiangrrlmn a few weeks ago, Red Dirt Girl is an unqualified work of musical, lyrical, and emotional genius.

  45. 45

    Thadeus Horne

@Thadeus Horne: Slightly OT. At that same show, I saw the first incarnation of “Old and in the way” (Jerry Garcia, Peter Rowan, David Grisman, etc. Taj Mahal played bass.) I was playing in a bad local bluegrass band at the time and that’s how I got to meet those folks.

  46. 46

    Just Some Fuckhead

@Anne Laurie: Yeah, I wasn’t aware of the Yankees-FTFY-Gilliard connection and absent knowledge of that tenuous link, it seemed pretty weird to keep seeing his name. And it still may, actually.

Anne Laurie in comment 37:: I got my copy of the Poozies’ album “Yellow Like Sunshine” from MusicScotland.com There really aren’t many US-based sources left for folk-ish music from Ireland, Scotland and England. I’ve still got Elderly Instruments available to me, and I am very fond of cdroots.com (where the proprietor is a pal), but beyond what those two sources might have, I just look for overseas sellers.

re: the Poozies:: the big news is that Sally Barker came back after 12 years of maternity leave, and she punched things up nicely. Plus, the band now has both an accordion player and a fiddle player, as it was originally conceived.

(Ya, we should take it to e-mail. For the rest of you: Anne Laurie and I are discussing a folkish band we know from 15 years ago. Five women, two harps, guitar accordion and fiddle. http://www.poozies.co.uk and free streaming samples available at http://www.myspace.com/poozies, where perhaps the song “Another Train” might push some personal/political buttons…)

    More to Anne Laurie:
If you want to split your Music Scotland shipping cost across two CDs, have a look at Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. “Cuildh” was a great album, and her new one is “Uam,” and I have only heard some of that one on the BBC internet radio shows.

He came back after a day, bedraggled but with no injuries, thank goodness..

I cannot express my emotions on his return. Somewhere between prodigal son and something very deep in my childhood that had to do with boundless joy and love.

He was kind of a mess and his fur is still kinked up in places. Have to get him to a groomer to shampoo and clip—although he has never had that and I expect major —major resistance…

    Gail Collins is back:

In Ohio, citizens marched to the polls on Tuesday and voted to allow gambling casinos in the state. This was a obviously a message to President Obama that independent voters are not happy with the way the health care bill is going. Really, I don’t see how else you can interpret it. Ohioans were looking forward to the lower insurance costs that would come with a robust public option, and if the president can’t deliver, they’re planning to pay their future medical bills with their winnings at the roulette wheel.

New Jersey was even worse. The defeat of Gov. Jon Corzine made it clear that the young and minority voters who turned out for Obama will not necessarily show up at the polls in order to re-elect an uncharismatic former Wall Street big shot who failed to deliver on his most important campaign promises while serving as the public face of a state party that specializes in getting indicted.

    @MBSS:

Thing is, last year seemed to be a bellwether. Then…Yanks spent untold millions to do what they always do: buy a team rather than grow a team. They just happened to spend more, and on players they knew other teams loved and needed more than the Yanks really did.

That’s honestly why I fell in love with the Rays after ‘08, and still stick with ‘em after this mediocre (yet still better than their decade of awfulness before): they actually invest and grow a team, even if it took years to pay dividends (just not about to say that out loud, living in the NYC metro area).

I still wish they didn’t trade Iwamura though.

The first bit that Erickkk quotes must have had cRush in a sweat…

You know what, I was reading Erick Erickson today at RedState.com, and he was the real first behind Hoffman guy. I mean, he was really pushing it…

I thought I heard some loud fwopping noises from the southeast earlier today. cRush saying that Erickkk was “the real first behind Hoffman guy” and that “he was really pushing it…” must have added to that loud fwopping I heard.

    It was in stereo!

This post isn’t political. It’s about Emmylou Harris. Never met the lady, but once when I was a teen*, I was on the street just beside of UNC-G at night looking for a place to hang out, and there was really nice music coming out of what was either a club of some sort or a restaurant, I don’t really remember exactly. I started to go in but then saw a sign that said “Cover Charge Fifty Cents”. At the time, cover charges were pretty rare and I went ballistic saying “I will NEVER pay FIFTY CENTS to see some singer. Never”. Later on I found out it was Emmylou Harris.

*This was long, long time ago in a universe far, far away.

Admittedly I don’t give a hoot about sports, but doesn’t every pro team buy its “arms”?

The Yankees spend more than double the second highest payroll.
