Because I can

Having fun with the new toy.

Some of you guys have posted first-rate pics on my photo threads, so I will turn it over to you for a while. Email me a link to your one or two favorite pics on a photo site like Flickr (do not send the image itself please) and I will put up favorites in open threads. Send a short caption if you want one.

Way to mind the store, Tim F!

I’m ashamed to say how much glee the WH releasing its visitor logs gives me. Hopefully, this list will eventually inspire a mud fight of such epic proportions that we’ll not only get healthcare and cap and trade passed under its cover but maybe even some regulatory improvements as well.

I’m now starting to see a certain delicate beauty in the press’ penchant for puerility.

Is it still a bleg if you bleg in the comments? a cleg? Anyway, I have a question for any of the resident photophiles willing to help a brotha out. I am looking for a good compact that can cover a lot of the ground between brainless point-and-shoot and decent manual features. My ideal as I understand it at the moment is the Canon G10/G11, but in reality that thing is too spendy on a grad student budget. I have a Canon A95 that I love but is crapping out after many loyal years of service. Any suggestions would be awesome, thanks :-)

@Moonbatting Average: You might consider older technology. I’m mainly a film guy, but I’ve used a Kodak Z7590 digital for several years. Yes, only 5MP, but it has 10x optical zoom, Schneider lens, full manual controls. You can use an external flash with it, with no restrictions, and IMHO it ain’t a camera if all you’ve got is a popup flash. I’ve used a big nasty Vivitar 285 flash with mine and had no problems. The same flash killed a Nikon digital in short order. You could probably buy a pristine used one for < $100.00.

Hrm… I e-mailed mine, but everyone seems to be posting theirs, so I’ll post mine too:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/s.....63/detail/

As I mentioned to Tim in the e-mail, I really, really (did I mention REALLY?) envy those of you with decent cameras. If you’re willing to take the time and get creative with your lighting options, you can get some pretty good stuff out of a point-and-shoot (shoplights and pillowcases, baby!), but there are just some things I’ll never be able to do properly until I graduate to the big-girl toys.

It’s ridiculous, really. My husband and I are both unemployed, and I should really be worried about things like the mortgage, and the medical bills, but what my heart really wants is a DSLR camera. Mind you, I’m not actually buying the camera. We’re paying the mortgage and the medical bills. But, for some reason, now even more than before, what I really want is the camera. I think it’s probably the need for expression and a creative outlet that, for whatever reason, feels so much more urgent during hard times.

Not to go all contrarian on the photo thread, but Canon’s dedicated macro-only lens is the MP-E 65mm 1-5x. Fantastic lens, but with a steep learning curve.

The 100mm f2.8 macro is also a great lens, but it is general purpose and a sharp portrait lens. I’ve used it for weddings as well as bugs.

@toujoursdan Isn’t Senegal the most fascinating, frustrating, aggravating, gorgeous place you’ve ever seen? My parents taught at an international school there for a year in their retirement and we got to visit them. We spent Christmas at Cape Verde, and New Years in Niokolo-Koba. That was all pre-digital days, but those are some negatives I have at the front of the line for scanning.
