“Progressive elites” is my favorite euphemism for hippies:
What we’re seeing is the latest iteration of that populist tendency and the militant progressive reaction to it. We now have a populist news media that exaggerates the importance of the Van Jones and Acorn stories to prove the elites are decadent and un-American, and we have a progressive news media that exaggerates stories like the Joe Wilson shout and the opposition to the Obama schools speech to show that small-town folks are dumb wackos.
“One could argue that this country is on the verge of a crisis of legitimacy,” the economic blogger Arnold Kling writes. “The progressive elite is starting to dismiss rural white America as illegitimate, and vice versa.”
DC area millionaire David Brooks wants all you elitist middle-class flyover motherfuckers to stop being so damned elitist.
And, as you’d expect, the sober-minded Arnold Kling is a CATO Institute whack job. Here he is on the stimulus:
And now we’ve got a new gang of thugs and they are doing the same thing. So that’s how I feel, now back to how I think.
At least Brooks didn’t find a way to quote Steve Sailer again.

David Brooks is a clueless useless tool. One of the more disturbing aspects of Brooks is that he has so many different platforms from which to disseminate his stupid views. He has his NYT column, a regular Friday nite slot on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, a regular spot on the Charlie Rose show whenever Charlie holds a political roundtable segment, and frequent appearances on the Sunday morning shows.

Yeah, Obama’s the first president who ever hired elites for his advisors. Previous presidents contented themselves with cabinet members who wore overalls and were named Cletus.
I suppose you could argue that Beck and his idiots are populists, but it is a populism based entirely on hating the Democratic Party. Beck makes a fortune doing what he does; I have no idea what his followers get out of it.

Damn it, I hate it when I dismiss white America. Cause I have to dismiss my entire family, for one thing, plus many of my friends, especially the ones who are in rural areas.
The ones in leftover communes up in rural Northern California are especially pissed when I have to dismiss them, plus all of the artsy types I know in rural Iowa, Colorado, yeesh.
Can I have a waiver and just dismiss myopic Mister Magoo Masters of Cliche like David Brooks instead?

Message to David Brooks:
Fox News is NOT a “populist news media”; it is a Rupert Murdoch financed propaganda arm of the GOP.
Van Jones and Acorn are not “elites”; Jones is an activist and ACORN is a community action group.
The mainstream news media is no more “progressive” than it is liberal.
Joe Wilson and the “opposition to the Obama schools speech” are not “small town folks”; they are Republicans.
Finally, George Orwell’s Politics and the English Language is NOT a style guide; it is criticism.

“The progressive elite is starting to dismiss rural white America as illegitimate, and vice versa.”
Uh, no. I feel that most moderates and those on the left -heck ANYONE not associated with the teabaggers- don’t make such generalizations. We know that some of the right wingers may live in rural areas, but that it is not a prerequisite. I live in Baltimore and they’re here in my city. It seems most of the generalizations are coming from the right wingers organizing this mess and cable news pundits in search of a simple “who hates whom story”. Sweeping generalizations and reductions of complex problems to stereotypes are a hallmark of the right wing and, increasingly, the MSM.
I can see Brooks is trying to frame this as an American Theme- part of our country’s DNA. And he is right insofar as it has been with us since the birth of this country. But racism is also part of our DNA, an on-going theme. It’s not the only theme stoked by the right; Xenophobia works too. The right uses the hatred of its followers as a blunt instrument to damage the agenda of the opposition.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter if it’s racism or what. It all comes down to hatred, ignorance and eventually violence which sets us back, time and time again, from addressing on any meaningful level the issues which beset our country.

a progressive news media that exaggerates stories like the Joe Wilson shout and the opposition to the Obama schools speech to show that small-town folks are dumb wackos
There are so many astonishing yet somehow predictable fallacies in that one segment that I hardly dare start unpacking it.
Nonetheless, putting on my plastic journalistic customs agent gloves and digging bravely into the soiled, hastily-packed, suspiciously-heavy, old brown fabric suitcase that is a David Brooks “insight” in search of smuggled disingenuous pundit contraband:
Did even the “Progressive Blogosphere”, let alone the mythical “Progressive Media” say that everyone in small towns is a dumb wacko? Or even smart wackos? Or are even the worst of the ridiculers ridiculing these particular people, and rightly so? Has Brooks ever seen a progressive tease other small town progressives, like aging hippies or folk gatherings or organic farming communities and so on? No? Really?
Has Brooks ever heard the progressive blogosphere going on, and on, and on– about the fat cats on Wall Street and the bankers and the corporations and globalism? Are these supposedly small-town, rural global fat cat bankers and CEOs??
And I mean if not– why not? It’s everywhere in progressive blogoland!
If Brooks actually took the time to READ what progressives had to say he’d know how absurd this gross generalizing is, but instead I fear that his only contact with real progressives are the ones he imagines chatting with at some organic version of the AppleBee’s salad bar.
JGabriel
Bill E Pilgrim:
Of course not, but you miss Bobo’s intent. It’s not to bitch about the progressive blogosphere — it’s to reframe the “liberal media” as the “progressive media” and to associate mainstream media who reported on Wilson and opposition to Obama’s school speech as “progressive elites” who think rural and suburban people are “dumb wackos”.
.
Bill E Pilgrim
@JGabriel: Oh I think he’s trying to do both. Or rather, trying to put progressive blogosphere thoughts into the corporate mainstream media’s mouth, and THEN thereby dismiss them as progressive elites.
Which it occurs to me is sort of what you said. But my point is that this IS his way of really bitching about the progressive blogosphere, in his own, devious, addle-headed way.

Another example that Brooks is nothing but a dishonest cog in the right wing noise machine. Populist:
2 : a believer in the rights, wisdom, or virtues of the common people
And from TheFreeDictionary.com:
pop·u·lism n.
1. a. A political philosophy supporting the rights and power of the people in their struggle against the privileged elite.
Evidently, Bobo doesn’t believe there are any urban or non-white common people, believes that to call out racism, boorishness, and/or ignorance makes one a militant progressive, and believes that RW/GOP=populist.
In other words, he doesn’t have Clue One what he’s talking about.

I love how DC insider elitists expound on populism, rural americans & all aspects of american culture that are far, far removed from their own bubble. The closet babbling Brooks ventured from his tribal village was checking out suburban chain restaurants as he wrote about suburbia that he alternately treated with disdain or admired the conservative, republican suburban world as exhibiting the american dream.
Of course, any DC insiders making an effort to comprehend anything out of their comfort zone would get them thrown out of the club.

Obama’s doing well with that. It has been YEARS since someone talked about the cost/benefit of anything remotely connected to national security, in terms of dollars.
Conservatives have gotten a pass on “defense spending” since Reagan, and it’s silly, and it shouldn’t and can’t continue.
It’s part of federal spending. The idea that we can’t even look at adjustments in defense allocation without the right wing chorus rising up to declare cutting anything off-limits is a purely ideologically-driven rule conservatives constructed.

To elucidate the obvious: Kling’s equivalency is totally false. The teabaggers are denying the legitimacy of a watershed landslide election. But the progressives are only denying the legitimacy of the original legitimacy-deniers, not of electoral results and other democratic prerogatives when right-wingers win elections.

For Brooks to seriously argue that the Teabagger Movement (I feel ridiculous even typing that phrase, it seems like something right out of South Park) does not have a strong racist component to it shows either how clueless he is or that he’s lying.

David Brooks knows – no, really knows – that the GOP has been using the racial wedge since Nixon. He is distressed by that, so his solution is to use every rhetorical tool to show that it really is not true. But deep down he does know this. (I saw this once on the Lehrer News Hour, he really did try to come to terms with it, but I think he has since decided the best course of action is to deny it and by denying it often enough and loudly enough it will cease to be true.)

It’s too kind to call the Villagers “clueless.” By and large, they’re con artists with a cushy gig. They aren’t much different than Glenn Beck or Rush, they’re just smoother to cater to their particular marks.

Curious that DB managed not to see any of the signs depicting Obama as Hitler, the Joker et al. One wonders how participants in the Black family group would react to those.
As others have pointed out already, the whole column essentially begs the question by assuming that the marchers are representative of a homogeneous small town rural America rather than fringe nutters. Obama, as I think Kth observed, is not an alien imposition on the real America, but the winner of a landslide victory who, outside the deep south, garnered masses of support from different sorts of people, including the present-day counterpart of Jefferson’s small freeholders–if there really is any such thing. The real story is of a popular president, moderate and centrist to a fault, stymied by an outlandish combination of the big money elite, their bought and paid for pseudo-populist press and a dysfunctional legislature.

I liked the heartwarming story about the Teabaggers mingling with the Black Family Reunion, and buying food from their booths and dancing at their concerts and how that means we can all get along and we are post-racial, or something.
Now, maybe some Teabaggers really did go to the Black Family Reunion after the march; BFR happens all over the country and it’s an awesome cultural street festival. But I doubt they were the kinds of Teabaggers with the truly noxious signs, you know?

What doesn’t click for me about this explanation–which comes up a lot–is that if (allegedly) contemptuous treatment of the other side is such a turn-off, why don’t Republicans and conservatives have to worry about the ferocious contempt in which _they_ hold the other side? Hank probably knows women and gay people and Mexicans and union members who don’t live up to every stereotype propagated against them; why doesn’t he hear Republican animosity and recoil from that?
Why does only one side get to say, “Fuck you, losers, you disgust me?” Resentment cuts both ways. I wants it. I resent the hell out of puffy old white Protestant conservatives. They resent me back. Fine, we’re even. I don’t know my sentiments are a political problem but theirs need respect.

If someone like Brook is going to go out and call these people populists, at the very least, you’d think he’d be under an obligation to show how the beliefs of these people actually help working people — and if he can’t show that, then who else exactly their beliefs do help.
A good measure of populism is how those in wealth and power would be affected by what the person is advocating. On this basis, these people are the very opposite of populists.
In fact, the Teabaggers are a rich man’s dream come true!
Remember, when a conservative like Brooks portrays right-wing groups as ‘populist’, it’s a conscious effort to give them a legitimacy — in other words, working class creds — that nothing in their agenda or activities would suggest.

Agreed, I am pissed and have been for years now. These fuckwits are newly pissed, let the assholes go to the back of the line. We were here first after having to watch these fuckers and their party screw the pooch for far too long. They can either recognize that they ARE the problem, step back and let the adults try to clean up the mess they made, or they can listen to us berate and ridicule them for their willingness to continue smacking their heads against the bloody brick wall.
Fuck their poor little feelings, we have been eating their shit sandwich long enough. They might love the taste but I am sick of it and have been since day one. Boo-fucking-hoo, for all I care they can go suck on a diseased donkey dick. I’m a white guy and I am sick and tired of white guys running everything into the ground and spitting on everyone who is not of the chosen race (and party!).
The powers that be know that if Obama is a success, the Republican party is dead. They are going to fight him every inch of the way, and as impervious as he is to their bullshit I believe they are going to go after his support. They are going to mercilessly attack him with anything they can, doing everything they can to “take him down” once and for all.
This is going to be a long, nasty, bloody fight. The Clinton years are going to look like a kids party compared to the rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth shit that these fuckwits are going to shovel on us for at least the next few years. Our only hope is that they keep overplaying their crap and making mountains out of molehills. If so, people are going to get sick and tired of the petty whining and turn their back on the shithole that the Republican party has become.
I wish there was a law protecting states from their own citizens stupidity, one where the other states get to vote on the sanity of the problem state(s). When citizens consistently vote against their best interests it just makes it too easy for corruption to step in, make itself at home and take advantage of the rubes by milking the idiots for all they are worth. I heard on Maddow that if Sanford stayed in Argentina he would have a better medical system and be expected to live longer than if he stayed in South Carolina.
