Everyone’s talking about this CNN segment where Tom Tancredo says that La Raza Is ‘Latino KKK Without The Hoods Or Nooses’.
It’s pretty clear, to his credit, that the CNN anchor, Rich Sanchez, is having none of this tomfoolery. And I have to question the wisdom of going on an anti-Latino tirade….with an anchor whose parents came over from Cuba.
I think that brings up one of the real issues Republicans have with anti-Latino rhetoric: it’s tough to keep track of who is Latino and who isn’t. Time was, if you were serious about it, you knew that Corrigan was a mick and Russo was a wop and Green was a jew. But when race-baiting moved to the young bucks buying t-bones stage, everyone got a little bit lazy because it’s usually easy to tell who is black and who isn’t (Vin Diesel and Bob Barr notwithstanding).
But at this point, I wonder if even hard-core anti-immigrant types have enough racist mojo to keep track of the players without a scorecard. And that seems like one more reason why anti-immigrant rhetoric is a bad idea.
Brachiator
Nice touch on Bob Barr. I always wondered about him.
How about anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric? There is a difference.
Anne Laurie
Also, in the good old days of St. Richard of Nixon, and even St. Ronnie, racist “Caucasian” politicians could count on the Puerto Ricans hating the Cubans hating the Mexicans hating the Centralamericanos with far greater fervor than any of them hated the “Caucasian” racists. Alas for solidarity, Ollie North’s Excellent Nicaraguan Adventures and the ensuing 20-plus-year War Against Some Drugs has eroded the time-testing enmities while solidifying the general awareness that whatever a particular Latino/a’s accent, all Tom Tancredo will ever hear is “spic”.
JGabriel
DougJ:
Well, if CNN is hiring Hispanics, that just proves they have a liberal bias!
The sad thing is, you know Tancredo believes that.

No, there isn’t. One can debate immigration and documentation rules without literally villifying everyone who comes to the USA without a green card.

So Tancredo is a racist asshole; hardly a revelation. But if you’re going to object to the politicization of the Supreme Court you’d better go on record right now and promise that you will never, ever participate in similar things when it’s a Republican president picking someone or a Democratic one who has no doubt that his/her choice passes the (gasp!) litmus test of the Democratic voters.
Only the merits, decisions, qualifications, etc., etc., etc.
JGabriel
No, there isn’t.
One can debate immigration and documentation rules without literally villifying everyone who comes to the USA without a green card.
After all, most laws regarding immigration invoke a return to one’s native country, not a prison sentence or other criminal penalty.

@Anne Laurie:
Massification of ‘latinos’ is a white construct to begin with. Why on earth would Mexicans have anything in common with Puerto Ricans other than language and dwindling interest in religion? That’s like saying there should be a shared WASP consciousness among Americans, Canadians, English people, New Zealanders, etc.
Saying that they hate each other is the same as assuming that Mexican-Americans in border towns in Arizona should give a shit because Sotomayor is…what? Latina? Maybe they don’t give a shit either way.
The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge
Yeah, I can’t tell any more either. My girlfriend always watches all those CSI-type shows, which I avoid like the plague. Anyway, I’ll be going through the room when she’s watching Bones and there’s this girl in there that I would have bet $100 was of Asian/Latina extraction. I always miss the titles, so I didn’t know her name.
Well, I finally looked her up, and mirabile dictu, her name is Michaela Conlin, and according to her bio she’s Chinese and Irish! Jeebus fucking McCree, she’s hot, though! Any race-mixin’ you want to set up, if she’s in the mix, I’m fine with that!
Travis
That was a painful clip to watch. The core problem with Tancredo isn’t his racism, it is his complete unawareness of his own stupidity. He believes in a simple world, because he is a simple man.
Rick Sanchez gets no praise when he lets crap like the La Raza = KKK go by – he deliberately avoid comment. The assertion is a hysterically wrong statement on many levels, but Sanchez doesn’t engage.
Ultimately, he let the guest walk all over him, repeating lies and general fomenting hysteria. The interview was a joke. It was a lack of professionalism that would have ended a career before Cable TV turned news into infotainment.

@wilfred: Do you really want to argue that being pro torture shouldn’t disqualify someone from the bench? I’ll bet I could oppose that person without slurring their religon, their ethnic heritage, their gender, their culinary preference or their sexual orientation.
No one is saying you can’t disagree with her views. All I’m hearing is nonsense about how empathy is bad, she’s not saving enough money, she eats ethnic food and she’s too mean because she asks tough questions and she’s too stupid because her academic acheivements mean nothing.
But that all works for me. If the republicans want to keep alienating women and hispanic voters then I won’t have to work hard to keep your sociopath off the bench.
wilfred
Of course not. I’m merely pointing out that the moment that people find out that Sotomayor may not agree with something precious to them then it will be off with her head, even though she may still be the best qualified person out there.
All politics is these days is whose ox is being gored at any particular moment. What is absolutely laughable is that I’d bet everyone here is certain that Sotomayor has been vetted to be the perfect candidate for liberals, i.e. in Supreme Court terms she is pro-choice, which immediately gives the lie to equally precious wanking about how high-minded their own positions are vis-a-vis experience, qualifications, etc.
All I see is hypocrisy from all parties involved.
r€nato
Gee funny you should bring that up. Sotomayor has never directly ruled on abortion, and both pro-choice and “pro-life” advocacy groups are curious where exactly she stands on the issue.
So, you know, you’re wrong. She has not been vetted on the issue of reproductive rights.

Obama needs to start using the words “dignified” and “civil”. I was looking at the coronation, um, confirmation of John Roberts, and we all joined together and insisted on dignity and civility.
Media, Republicans, Democrats.
Dignity and civility were our goals.
I’m just pleased as all get out that Judge Sotomayor is being treated with the deference given John Roberts.
Wouldn’t want there to be two sets of rules.

The real wonder is that Tancredo did not begin shouting racial epithets. He was so worked up repeatedly yelling “La Raza!!!” while Sanchez was trying to talk that I figured we were only seconds away from him blurting out something like, “Shut you, you stupid spic!”
However, on balance, I think it’s great that Tancredo is given a platform. The more people see of that kind of behavior coming from a Republican elected official, the more they will associate that kind of vicious bigotry with Republicans in general. And only massive public disapproval of such attitudes will ever convince the GOP to eschew bigotry.

The right wing will reach sub orbit in about 10 minutes. Impeachment won’t even be really discussed. You will be impeached for being catholic. It does take a special brand of stupid to vent your anti-Hispanic views in front of a Hispanic news anchor…
I think that a big reason that anti-Hispanic bigotry has failed to light things up for the GOP is because Hispanics are growing so quickly as a population. FWIW, I too would rather be living in a world in which it was seen as the norm for Supreme Court jurists to be non-theists than supernaturalists, and I certainly hope that beliefs about the supernatural play zero or as little possible role in any nominee’s or jurist’s decisions on the Court.
But this is still a world in which things aren’t as I prefer or as they ought to be and very well could be, in which case I think Sotomayor appears to be mainly within the moderate liberal tradition and not the Catholic / evangelical nut squad movement as pushed for the last 30 years by the Republican Party of the Dixie Confederate Baptist Uprisin’.
The Grand Panjandrum
@PeakVT: A frequent commenter here set up this blog to explain the blockquoting at BJ
Whoa. As a confirmed atheist myself I’m not sure I actually give a shit how many RC’s they have on the bench. Most of the RC’s I know are pretty decent people and are not rabid pro-life ideologues. As a matter of fact the RC church in the US has a history of social outreach–without proselytizing, I might add–that continues to this day. As an institution I do have problems with the theology, but I see no point vilifying a rank and file member of the faith.
Asking the question and receiving an answer are two seperate things. But it would not surprise me if the question was, or was not, asked. What would surprise me is if Sotomayor answered the question. Anyone who would answer that sort of question–even from the POTUS who may nominate them–is not worthy of sitting on the Supreme Court. I suspect during the vetting process, which would include interviews of those who know her professionally and personally, they have a pretty good idea of her views on most issues. They have a fairly extensive base of knowledge based on her years on the bench that gives them an idea of her approach to the law. However, no one really knows exatcly how she might rule on a given case with regard to Roe v. Wade or any other “liberal” litmus test.
.
Surly Duff
Complete and utter bullshit. I don’t recall any arguments against Alito’s or Robert’s intelligence, background, or gender. Instead, the discussion and questions focused on their previous judicial experience, their decisions, and how they would make decisions. Included in those questions was the “litmus test” or their potential rulings in abortion/pro-choice cases. That seems like discussing merits, qualifications, etc.
So far the questions regarding Sotomayor have been about -her intelligence or lack there of (By the way, this amuses me to no end. The right spent the last 8 years touting the academic qualifications, i.e. attending Ivy league schools, of their leader and then just 5 months later questioning the intelligence of a woman who graduated summa cum laude from an Ivy league school), her bench demeanor (angry woman!!), the color of her skin, her dietary choices, her empathy, and the magical percentage of rulings overturned. Yes, those are exactly the same. Nothing like good false equivalencies in the morning.
JL
TGIF! Sotomayor’s views are important to me and during the hearings I’ll be paying attention. Obama did ask her views on privacy and he was satisfied with her answers.

Me too, but Obama really does not need to ask her directly about it. Since Roe is law so long as she has a strong belief in Stare Decisis she should uphold it. Brachiator has a point. It’s not fair to the people who are here legally to give illegals amnesty. It undermines the appropriate procedures for entering the country.
The biggest problem with people like Tancredo, IMO, is the fact that his blatant and transparent racism muddies the waters and makes it hard for people to have an honest discussion about immigration.
This latest dust-up is further proof that Republicans like Tancredo simply don’t like hispanics: legal, illegal, or otherwise. All Tancredo is trying to do is cover his tracks by accusing others of racism so that when he (legitimately) is accused of racism, he can pretend it’s tit for tat.

It’s still very sketchy. And it does not allow for strikethroughs within a blockquote. Were it only one or two people saying that the HTML is wonky, then yes, I’d say that it is likely their problem — that they must have made a mistake somewhere. But when you have the vast majority of people here saying that it’s just not working right, then I don’t think the problem is with the users — it’s with the programming.
Parhelion
Speaking as someone who has quite a bit of Mexican-American and Native American blood, I might not care if no one else did. But when, right out of the box, Sotomayor is dissed because of how she pronounces her name and what she likes to eat, you’d better believe I give a shit. If those folks say such stupid stuff about a woman of Puerto Rican background, I know they’re happy to say that same sort of stuff about people like me. I guess this is yet another case where critics are creating and maintaining the hispanic identity in which they claim not to believe.

I remember the objections to Bork, I was of voting age when THAT litlle brouhaha hit. His problem was not that he has a funny name, or a weird diet — it was that he was a nutbar of the highest order IN HIS LEGAL REASONINGS. Thomas was a lightweight, in that I got almost no sense of the man from any of his written opinions from the brief time he served on the Circuit Court. Scalia only served four years on the Circuit Court and was a very staunch opponent of the “living constitution” concept, which places him in the “fucking retarded” bin in my opinion (Go ahead, try and use 18th C. concepts to handle 20th C. situations that HAVE NO PRECEDENT. Seriously.)

Or, I can choose not to vilify anyone, while acknowledging that illegal immigration is a serious issue. I don’t begrudge people who come here because they need to work. Hell, the LA Times recently ran an article which contained a piece, written by a minister, which suggested that Westside liberals should not feel guilty for exploiting illegal immigrant nannies and household workers. Meanwhile, free market libertarians dance on the head of philosophical pins talking about open immigration policies while they employ illegal immigrants so that they can pay the lowest wage that they can get away with, and fire workers who complain, since they can easily be replaced with more recent arrivals.

Oh, good grief. Yes, if it turned out that Sotomayor was pro-life or anti-gay marriage, I would not support her for the court. You know why?
