Rick Moran has another pretty good take-down of Glenn Beck from the conservative point-of-view:
And this brings us back to the first part of the question that people were asking me; why bother? Beck is an entertainer. He speaks for the little guy. In the large scheme of things he doesn’t matter. Besides, he’s funny. He’s not serious about a lot of the things he says.
All of that may be true. But if you see someone running toward a gasoline dump with a lit match, what would you do? Say, “Ignore him, he doesn’t matter?” Or perhaps, “That’s pretty funny, someone trying to immolate himself.” Or maybe, “Man, this explosion and fireball is going to be so kewl!”
You can argue that I’m an idiot for believing this as many of you have and no doubt will continue to do so. But Beck and others like him, who constantly raise the specter of American doom, of Obama as commissar, the Democrats as Nazis, while imploring listeners to “take the country back” and start some kind of “revolution” are bat sh*t dangerous to the conservative movement.
It’s interesting because most of what he says is right, but also interesting because, as is typical of Moran and his ilk, all that matters is the conservative movement.
But, yes, I think that we are at the point where we should laud conservatives for reaching the conclusion that unabated batshit craziness is a bad thing, even if the only reason they believe it’s a bad thing is that it hurts the conservative movement.
Of course, Rick himself only knows a hack from a handsaw when the wind is southerly, so to speak, as this amply demonstrates:
Meanwhile, our intrepid Somali pirates know they have western liberals on their side as long as they can show that the reason they board ships, terrorize people, take crew members hostage, kill with impunity, and barter for ransom is because they are only acting in “self defense” against rancid capitalists and western governments who allow the practice of dumping and illegal fishing with a wink and a nod. This appeals to many on the left who will now see the problem as a question of “fairness” and will agitate that the president forgoe knocking the stuffing out of pirate infrastructure in favor of a “negotiated” solution. Piracy will continue, hostages will still be taken, governments and businesses will still be forced to pay ransom – but liberals will feel better about the whole thing.
What strikes me most about discussion of the pirates, though, is how thin the line is between the right-wing blog line on piracy and the Georgetown line.
GSD
One would think even the far right idealogues would be a tad suspicious of Glenn Beck. A man who claims to be so concerned about the deteriorating condition of his country that he has announced his first stand-comedy tour.
Folks, he’s shoving your faces in shit, telling you he’s a rodeo clown and yet you are falling in behind him like he’s a Christ.

In all fairness, how do you handle the loons on the left? If you’ve got a bunch of people chaining themselves to pine trees in protest of logging, or picking nuclear power plants in tie-dyed t-shirts, or having a "die-in" in protest of the newest American war, what first goes through your mind?
If the people are being particularly melodramatic and useless, I can’t help but look at them and think, "Wow are you ever pissing all over my cause."
Moran’s got his conservative values, and he’s watching them get tied to the back of the Glenn Beck crazy train and dragged through the mud. Beck is doing the most damage to his own movement. It’s natural for movementarians to cringe and feel concern first for the biggest victim of it all. I don’t fault Moran for that.
Just Some Fuckhead

The conservatives bought First Class tickets on the crazy train when they remained silent as some of their most prominent pols kowtowed to Rush Limbaugh. Beck is just the most ostentatious examplar of the paranoid delusions that conservatives have been pushing for years.
benvolio
Oh! Nice with the Hamlet reference! "I am but mad north by northwest.."
Zifnab
@Dennis-SGMM: Limbaugh is a dick. And a great number of conservative policies have stopped even pretending to be utilitarian or fiscally responsible or whatever. But Beck is just crazy. He could be hawking the conservative line or he could be peddling the ShamWOW. His entire act is just off-the-wall nuts.
It doesn’t matter what Beck is selling. He’s going to kill the brand all the more by jumping off the walls.
NonyNony
@Zifnab:
I tend to think "WTF is PETA doing this time?", so I can see your point.
OTOH – I’ve never thought that PETA or even "Earth First" were tapping into something that could lead to nutters blowing up Federal buildings or shooting up cops. Where in my lifetime the loonies on the left have restricted themselves to stupid antics, property damage, and graffiti, I’ve seen the loonies on the right blow up abortion clinics, blow up a Federal Building, and get into firefights with cops.
So I can see where DougJ is coming from with this. Moran may be seeing the damage that Beck is doing to "his" movement, but he doesn’t seem to be making the connection to the damage he’s doing to the country. Which I’d see as a bigger deal myself, but Moran may not think or or may just not realize that the fallout from Beck’s "rodeo clown" antics may be really, really bad and go beyond just "hurting the movement."

I think that the right could have gone either way on this. Had some tiny variable in their brain been different, they’d be siding with the pirates. Obama’s decision to take the lives of three innocent, freedom-loving people patrolling their own coast, killing them with impunity, would be an unconstitutional Nazi-like power grab that we should be very concerned about.
After 8 years of them accusing Democrats of being sympathetic to terrorists, I figure it’s only a matter of time before they outright support an enemy of the United States, because projecting their own worst traits onto others is WHAT THEY FUCKING DO.

Speaking of the nuthouse, I ran into this spooky little comment. For those who don’t want to click through, basically some guy on Beck’s 9-12 site claims his son is in the Special Forces, and "they’re ready, we’re ready", then practically BEGS the Secret Service and FBI to talk to him about treason by claiming that Obama and Congress are "breathing borrowed air" and "will all hang".
Keep *that* one in mind next time someone on Fox cherry-picks some DailyKos diary comment as the definitive view of the left-wing movement.

The popularity of neanderthals like Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Scarborough, Dobbs, Coulter, and Malkin is the strongest sign of the decline of civil discourse and critical thinking in this country.

This has gone way past being funny. It has gotten out of hand and I don’t think Beck could dial it back even if he wanted to. I can only hope the Secret Service is actively monitoring that site.

@ Keith
Yeah, ol’ Bulldog there is pretty much a psychotic loon. The comment in question has been deleted by the Beck’s admin team, but if you click on Bulldog’s name, you will see that he has been leaving the exact same kinds of comments for weeks now. That kind of pattern is almost assuredly earning him a visit from the Secret Service, and if his son is really a Special Forces operator (which I strongly doubt), then his son is likely being questioned as well. The fact that Beck is encouraging douchebags like this is the biggest reason that he should be an object of public scorn and ridicule. And seriously, people. Please don’t watch his show even if it is mildly entertaining to point at the monkey.

Well, I’ve seen quite a bit of it, and I don’t even read that many left/liberal/progressive/whatever blogs. This post at Crooks and Liars is based on the Hari piece that Shackleford linked to, and the commenters are more than happy to run with it. Over at Booman’s place, it’s the commenters who are doing all of the "the pirates are forced into it" and "the pirates aren’t really that violent" heavy lifting, over several threads, while Booman tries to talk them down with helpful analogies to a cinematic masterpiece.

It must be pointed out that a number of radical lefties wanted Bush to fail in Iraq. Wouldn’t go so far as to say they cheered troop losses, but more than a few were pleased to watch Iraq blow itself up in order to demonstrate the idiocy and cluelessness of the pres. at the time.

I tell you what, I would much rather we take it serious and then be pleasantly surprised when nothing happens than dismiss it as just talk only to have a tragedy. There are too many unhinged people in this country and with the economy in the shitter many of them are just desperate enough to think they have nothing to lose. And the right wing rhetoric to them sounds like a pied piper leading them on their "mission". Sad part about it is with the Pittsburgh cop killings the media had an opportunity to take this issue on head on. Instead by in large they just ignored it and acted like there was no correlation.
bvac
@peach flavored shampoo: I’m sure some hyper-partisan bloggers would pimp the number of dead with the knowledge that it reflects badly on Bush, but I’ve never seen a single protester that wanted troops to die just so Bush would have egg on his face. No, most knew that the war was pointless and people were needlessly dying. I think most lefties simply wanted us to GTFO of Iraq before more died on either side. You also have to consider that the "shock and awe" goal of the war was to quickly obliterate their countries’ infrastructure, and this was before any real insurgency existed. So if lefties wanted Bush to fail at destroying a country that did not and could not harm us, thats a far cry from the right wanting Americans to die to show how weak-kneed Obama is.
Stefan
This appeals to many on the left who will now see the problem as a question of “fairness” and will agitate that the president forgoe knocking the stuffing out of pirate infrastructure in favor of a “negotiated” solution.
Pirate infrastructure? Pirate infrastructure is a few huts on the beach, some AK-47s, a few fishing smacks and a couple of outboard motors. For Christ’s sake, my local yacht club has a more sophisticated seagoing infrastructure than the Somali pirates.

@sgwhiteinfla: I agree completely. I remember the early Clinton years and the mood in the country right before the Oklahoma City bombing, and it didn’t feel as in-your-face, it’s-OK-to-talk-like-this as it does now.
There were black-helicopter, anti-Clinton wingnuts in the 90s for sure, but now, it’s moved so easily into prevalence that it has honestly surprised me. I always thought the fringe would come at President Obama from the racial angle, but instead they’re coming from a place that is sort of mainstreaming even more outrageous crazy-talk and making it acceptable.
We can really only trust that law enforcement is keeping as close an eye on domestic internet terror threats as they do foreign ones.

WTF? As opposed to the wingers, who will simply feel better knowing that brown people somewhere are getting bombed? As long as Somalia is a failed state with no effective government or economy and a population on the brink of starvation, poor villagers along the coast will resort to piracy. That’s not romanticizing — that’s reality. Blowing up a bunch of their ports will 1. kill a lot of innocent people; 2. piss off a whole nation of people who already don’t like us and are sympathetic to the message of radical jihadist Islam; and 3. delay further pirate attacks for about as long as it takes to buy some new boats. But hey, advocating missile strikes rather than an internationally-coordinated plan of economic and political intervention to actually solve the problem proves you have a huge cock, right? Victor Davis Hanson has to walk around with a wheelbarrow in front of him just to carry his.
I’ve never understood conservatives whose whole political identity rests in an abiding anger over 9/11 and an unquenchable desire for vengeance against those responsible, but who nonetheless think that if we drop a bunch of bombs on them, their reaction is going to be to cowering submission to the awesome power of America. No. Like you, they will become eternally pissed off and spend a lot of time and effort figuring out a way to get revenge. But since they don’t have a globe-spanning navy or airforce, they will use this thing called "terrorism" to even the score.
But as long as it provides further pretext for bombing brown people, bring ’em on, right?
Mnemosyne
I’ve been slightly on that bandwagon, at least to the point of, "Well, the pirates in Somalia haven’t been killing ship’s crews outright like the pirates in Asia have been, so it’s probably a good idea to try and negotiate so we don’t escalate things."
It’s like arguing that Mussolini was slightly less reprehensible than Hitler. Sure, he killed a lot of his enemies and did a lot of horrible things, but he wasn’t all that enthused about sending Italian Jews to the concentration camps — they didn’t start being sent in large numbers until Mussolini was deposed and assassinated.

I’m asking for fairness for them. What’s fair for violent criminals is arrest and prosecution. If they happen to get killed in the commission of their violent crimes, that’s unfair. Slightly.
Now, I have also expressed a certain amount of sympathy for them, given the predations of Somali territorial waters that are going on. I think that the self-righteousness of a lot of the people attacking them, who don’t seem at all bothered by illegal toxic waste dumping or overfishing is misplaced. Realistically, I’m not sure what anyone expects to happen under these circumstances. I’m not crying over the death of the pirates, though.

I feel you. Loons is loons and they only help in making the rest of us not look so insane.
My biggest beef is where are the Lefty Loons who own a whole media empire. I know conservatives love to paint the media as lefty but it is ridiculous. You might be able to make a case that many journalists are left but they are not the owners, editors, and certainly not the headline writers and OpEd columnists in major newspaers.
Glenn Beck has a show. People pay him a lot to reach a lot of people. Who on the left is that looney that has a show. If you read comments on Moran’s site they would say Olbermann but that is only because he makes them mad. He can be a bit over the top but he never descended in Bush has a secret army of zombies territory. I thought it was funny the other day they were ripping on KO because he had talked about the "assassins" controlled by Cheney while he was VP. He discussed it because it was in the news not because it was under his bed. And righties would have loved the story if it was on 24.
Olbermann didn’t gain any traction and did not really start attacking Bush until Bush really proved he was a Complete FAILURE. Beck acts like Obama is Stalin after only 10 weeks in power.
The traditional media has its lefty spokesmen no doubt. Like if they want a black perspective they talk to Al Sharpton. Or if they want to show how the left feels about America they showcase War Churchill. Nobodies who can be counted on to say something worthy of being mocked. These people don’t have any show. There is not a doubt in my mind that Glenn Beck will self-destruct within the next 18 months. He is frighteningly close to the edge right now. His mother committed suicide, his brother, also. He has a history of drug and alcohol abuse and is some sort of religious fanatic. I don’t feel as if I’m going out on a limb by predicting that he will do or say something on air soon that will either cause someone to do something so violent that he will be hounded from the air, or he will just implode onscreen before the public’s very eyes. Either way, I don’t think we’ll be celebrating his twentieth anniversary on the air….not from the look in his eye, I don’t.
