It was so easy for the McCain campaign to reset this morning, they might want to do it again tomorrow:
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin mistook some of her own fans for hecklers Monday as a rally that drew thousands.
A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway, and scores of people on the outer periphery more than 100 yards from the stage could not hear.
“Louder! Louder!” they began chanting, and the cry spread across the crowd to Palin’s left. Some pointed skyward, urging that the volume be increased.
Palin stopped her remarks briefly and looked toward the commotion.
“I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest,” she said.
Good thing McCain/Palin has Virginia locked up and can afford to get snotty with their supporters.
Or maybe not.

Talk about automated fem-bot response gone wrong.

It’s offical, this election has entered Bizzaro World.
Cris v.3.1
Thank you, veterans, for defending my right to ask the sound guy to turn up the volume.

I also love that the immediate response is that the protesters obviously hate our troops.

Talk about automated fem-bot response gone wrong.
Yeah, but that’s not just Sarah Palin; that passive-aggressive "you should thank veterans for your right to speak/assemble/breathe/not have my boot on your neck" has been a Republican mainstay for years.
The Yellow Elephants do love hiding behind the sacrifices of others.

20 large in VA? Damn that’s a LOT of clowns in one parking lot. I’m surprised that much Stoopit in one concentrated area didn’t cause a ripple in the space-time-IQ continum.

I think that’s "get stupid" rather than "get snotty".

I noted her response the other night to the booing at the Philly hockey game: she anticipated it because Philly fans are such jerks so she brought her youngest daughter along but they booed anyway and she thought it was just awful that they’d boo a little girl. What’s with that — using a little kid for cover? That’s really brave. And why aren’t her kids in school where they belong instead of traipsing around to all these campaign events? That’s pretty exploitative from my POV. You don"t see the Obamas doing that.
Oh yeah, and after Mooselini gets Virginia all locked up, she better move over to Missouri. SurveyUSA poll: Obama (D) 51%, McCain (R) 43%
Hell, even North Dakota seems to be moving into competitive territory.
Svensker
I volunteered for the Army back in the 70s, after Vietnam. Had a lot of fun (in a weird sort of way), met some real nice people (along with some jerks), lost quite a bit of weight and learned how to make my bed and polish my shoes. I do not, however, remember defending anyone’s liberties. Could have been called on to do so, but wasn’t.
And as far as that goes, I don’t see how any of the "troops" in the last long while have defended any Americans’ freedoms. They’re not doing that in Iraq, didn’t in Kuwait, didn’t in Vietnam, didn’t in Korea. Sure, most of the kids who went to any of those places may have thought they had noble reasons for what they were doing, and I don’t envy them getting their butts shot at (or off) in service to the military. But they have been serving and protecting the U.S. Government, not the citizens, and not the citizens’ freedoms (what few of those are left).
Sick of politicians using "the troops" to hide behind. A big load o’ crap.
jrg
I can thank veterans for my right to vote, too, but that did not stop the GOP from tossing out ballots in 2000. Palin makes me sick.

Anybody see this? Never mind the unsurprising stuff about her house being built by the sports complex contractor. No, what I refer to is that sail plane in the drive way of their car.
I’m absolutely fascinated by that. Fly in to the lake, park the plane in the drive way go inside. I bet they use it all the time. I want one. I bet that’s where Sarah’s kid was conceived. Yeah, baby.

Comrade Dreggas
There was probably a race scheduled which is why the McFlailin campaign chose the location. Nothing like trapping a crowd.
Jay Severin Has A Small Pen1s
The article criticized McCain and Palin for only visiting Virginia twice while Biden/Obama have come through eight times. Well, Mrs. Liberal media, at least Obama has the freedom to visit Virginia. When John McCain was a POW he didn’t have that luxury.
Tsulagi
You know, what could have been special, and in keeping with the crowd tenor before the reset button was hit, would have been if those closer to Palin who could hear her alos thought those in the back were protestors. If the Palin crowds hadn’t reset their buttons, could have heard shouts of “terrorist!” and maybe even a few “kill thems!” The whole thing could have turned into one huge retarded mosh pit.
Thank Jesus for reset buttons

Notorious P.A.T.
Obviously, if any soldiers were there, they’d be on Palin’s side.
Troops donate more campaign money to Obama than McCain, despite McCain’s military record
Does anyone think that last part is even close to true?

@Tsulagi: Not enough popcorn in the world.

I don’t see how any of the "troops" in the last long while have defended any Americans’ freedoms.
Don’t you remember how Saddam Hussein was poised to infringe First Amendment rights in your hometown until Bush bravely ordered the invasion of Iraq?
I’m sure the students at Kent State in 1970 were grateful to the Ohio National Guard for ‘defending their freedom’, just like the Chinese students at Tiananmen Square.
The military has largely been disinterested bystanders if not complicit while Chimp and Oily have strip-mined Constitutional rights over the last eight years. A large, imperial military-industrial complex is not a supporter of anyone’s freedoms, except its own freedom to maximize its profit and power on the backs of gullible, two-digit IQ jingoistic redneck tools like Palin.
Notorious P.A.T.
You are right, that is just about the least-surprising thing I’ve ever read.
LOL
DonnaInMichigan
Sarah apPALINg, is just well appalling….
Why is she having her kids follow her around, why aren’t they home with Todd, and kept in school?
Oh wait..Levi has quit school..to become an electrician apprentice, and well Bristol already quit school, because of her being pregnant.
It really shows how much priority they put on a good education.
Dennis - SGMM
Oh you left-wing skeptics. When I was fighting in Vietnam for your freedoms every time I squeezed off a burst from the ol’ M60 I’d think:
Take that, for freedom of speech.
And that, for freedom of assembly.
And that and that, for the right to petition for the redress of grievances.
And take this, you godless Commie, for the Commerce Clause.
No, really.
Apsalar
I think the way Palin played musical colleges was a good indication of that already.
The Moar You Know
A "good education" just fills one’s head with the lying words of Satan. No one needs education as long as you have faith, a nice set of legs, a blind, all-consuming ambition, and are the new standard bearer of a party full of religious fanatics and crooked businessmen.
Education is wasted on the Palin kids. I wouldn’t worry about them too much.
JGabriel
DonnaInMI:
Palin’s parents were teachers. That means the kids don’t need to finish school because they can see education from their house.

yes, thank goodness our invasion of Iraq prevented Bush’s administration from blanket, warrantless illegal domestic spying, infiltrating and compiling dossiers on peaceful anti-war protesters, and suspending habeas corpus.
Notorious P.A.T.
I’d thank you for your service, but that takes so much courage.

Which round has the superior democracy-spreading qualities, the 5.56 or the 7.62×51? I know which one feels like it is full of more freedom but I’d like the opinion of an expert.

@That One – Cain:
I gather that in Alaska, lakes suitable for floatplanes (not sailplanes, note) are pretty common -and a common site for houses. Apparently, what makes Mooseburger Manor special is its proximity to a (rare) paved road in its area (right where the Governor lives: gee, what a surprise!) – to the extent that the Palazzo Youbetcha is valued at something like twice the value of comparable neighboring properties. No info on the countertops, though: maybe an investigation is needed!
Punchy
Isn’t bein at a hockey rink an education? You learn finace (checking), living on ure own (boarding), Repub-style govt (interference), and sex (scoring)?
Dennis - SGMM
Because we were usually operating in thick cover we found that the 7.62 NATO round spread democracy more reliably than the 5.56. Our shoulder arm was the M-14, which could reliably spread democracy at ranges up to 1000yds.
That One - Cain
That’s what I gathered, but when it’s parked like that in the drive way it redefined surburban life for me. Car, 5 kids, husband, and float plane.. I love it! Of course, I heard that she didn’t even have to file building permits to build it. It’s good to be the mayor I guess. Not sure why city council wasn’t beating her upside the head when she did that.
We know she has marble countertops! Nothing is too good for the Governor! I bet she has a tanning machine in there too.

The Moar You Know
Much respect. You’re the M-60 guy and carrying an M-14? Must have been built like an ox.

Those "speak louder" protestors are gonna be bummed next time they try to fly somewhere and find they are now on the terrorist watch list.

Not so much. Just the 60, two 400rd belts, spare barrel and oven mitt plus field gear. When I arrived over there I weighed 180, when I left I weighed 144. I think that I lost the weight in self-defense.
The other guys carried 14’s.

This is the question I have for Johnny Drama re. Cindy McCain. I can’t recall ever seeing Johnny D. speak anywhere without her smiling and nodding vacuously right behind him. Can the man not relieve himself without help or what? What other candidate can you recall that ALWAYS had his or her spouse at every event? Has the woman no life outside of her hero?
Do you see Michelle holding Barack’s hand more than at the occasional big rally or primary night/convention event? No. The woman has a life of her own, AND the smarts to campaign for her hubby alone. Hey! I just answered my own question!! They can’t send Cindy out on the stump like they do Michelle.
he he. I feel better now.
Zuzu's Petals
If it was an Obama rally it would’ve been reported as swooning.
kommrade jakevich
According to the Blood Countess, the soldiers running around Iraq, Afghanistan, smacking Putin’s head with a badminton racket when it looms into our airspace, &c, &c, aren’t doing shit to defend our freedom to protest.
Why does Sarah Palin hate the troops?!
Cromagnon
Long live the pig! (for those who never wore green I am refering to the M60 MG, not Sarah Palin)
After Sarah’s appearence in our area this morning I learned something new. Apparently there is a new branch of the service ‘Naval Air Force’ since Sarah mentioned ‘Naval Air Force Station Oceana’… LOL
gbear
I looked at that picture. You know, all the trees and vegitation around her house used to be green before she became the VP choice. That’s how evil the force around Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis is.
In regard to the plane: I guess that explains the half-mile long reflecting pool that was built in front of the state capitol after Palin was elected.

@Delia:
If she loses, I fully anticipate her pulling a Rick Santorum and dragging her sobbing children out in front of the cameras. So we can see how that awful Obama and Biden hurt her little preciouses.

@mannemalon: I think she’s there to take care of him, in one way or another.
We mustn’t discount the possibility that she’s there to keep him and his roving eyes on a short leash. Irresponsible not to speculate, etc.
I’m still marveling at the subject of the post, tho. Clownshoes Palin must be quite a speaker to be able to toss out a 40-year-old snappy comeback to people who weren’t even heckling her, and in such a way as to remove all doubt that she’d been coached to say it.
This woman should be doing stand-up comedy.

Some of the posts here are just brilliant — laughed out loud for a good while reading some of the scathing wit! Seriously!
Now I understand why the Republicans won the last two elections – all the brains on the Democratic front were busy coming out with the best jokes instead of attending hate rallies and killing abortion clinic doctors! For God’s sake, where are your priorities? Grab your guns and share the love! Hate, baby, hate!

@Svensker #11:
In a completely routine corporate meeting near the Veterans Day following 9/11 (what, November 2002?), a coworker, ex-military, exhorted us, a bunch of high-tech Symbolic Analysts, to remember the troops — and I’ll never forget this — who are "fighting for our freedom."
For me, the disconnect was obvious: fighting for our freedom? Like, al-Qaeda in Afghanistan is in any conditional at all to make me speak Arabic and submit to Shari’a Law? The last time this was an actual believable threat was about fifteen minutes in 1941…
It’s World War II rhetoric, transferred to a frightened nation, and made to do threadbare duty for a ridiculous Middle Eastern adventurism.
Dear god, what a fraud…

ZOMG, David Frum is having a whiny fit on Rachel’s show and accusing her of being negative and unserious.
He was basically very upset that the Republicans are all falling apart and wouldn’t talk about what he was there to talk about, which was his criticisms of the McCain campaign. He wanted to talk about how mean Rachel was being to Republicans. He seemed very sad.
LA Confidential Pantload
I don’t think Cindy’s minding him. I think he’s holding her stash.

OK, we have no evidence that Palin is intelligent, knowledgeable, or has any integrity. She obviously is willing to use her office in illegitimate ways. She gave one nasty, but well-received speech to the Republican convention, followed that up with incredibly bad performances with Gibson and Couric, and then faked her way through the debate with Biden.
Listening to her stump speech/treason indictment of Obama, I find her amazingly boring — her presentation skills are not much better than those of her running mate, my friends.
She’s in her mid-forties and already her fans are demanding that her photos be retouched — so how long before the looks go completely? On what exactly are the predictions of her great political future based? What, she’s an asshole and most Republicans are assholes? Is that really enough? Being an asshole doesn’t exactly make her stand out among her fellow politicians — Republican or Democratic.
From everything I’ve seen, this is a woman of very limited knowledge, intellect, and judgment, with mediocre speaking skills, no debate skills (you have to know something to debate), and no apparent potential for growth.
I think she’s dragging the McCain ticket down and if they lose, it’s hard for me to believe that Republicans will be dumb enough to turn the party’s future over to her. I hope I’m wrong, because I don’t think she’ll wear well at all on moderates or conservative Democrats. Which leaves her with her Right Wing religious base and the likelihood of losing one election after another.
I know the American people are dumb, but we may have found the upper limit of their stupidity.
jenniebee
Damn, Palin was in Richmond today? If I’d known, I’d totally have gone down there. There’s a book I’d like her to autograph for me.
jcricket
The only people who spend time talking about how the troops are supposedly defending our right to protest, are the people busy squashing our rights to protest.
The GOP has not, in any real way, respected the troops. They cut funding for programs that support the troops once they come home from our ill-advised adventures in nation building, pump up useless military contracts for crap the troops don’t need (at the expense of stuff they do), and enrich contractors and mercenaries instead of devoting money to the training, retention and welfare of real soldiers. Not to mention getting the troops in harms way needlessly by starting an unnecessary war – and then using the troops as political footballs because pulling out of Iraq would mean admitting the GOP screwed the pooch. Yeah, they support the troops.
Just like "pro-life" ends at birth for Republicans, supporting the troops ends when the troops go to war. Fuck ’em if they die over there or come back wounded, is the Republican motto, apparently.
Comrade grumpy realist
Actually, considering that Palin runs so much on her sex appeal to self-proclaimed "conservative men" (Rich Lowry’s "starburst" speech providing more Freudian slips than a Victoria’s Secret catalog), it will be quite interesting to see how Palin’s "charm" will, um, *age* over the next four…or eight years.
Perky sex kitten Puritan librarian can only take you so far, my dear. At some point, you’re going to have to demonstrate some mental ability besides mouthing epithets and talking points other people have programmed into you. And for gossakes, get some actual ethical behavior if you’re so "christian" as you claim to be….
oh really
That would actually require a double standard, with the higher standard placed on a woman (Palin).
I mean, it’s not like Bush ever progressed beyond the "perky sex kitten" phase. When did he "demonstrate some mental ability" or show that he could do anything beyond "mouthing epithets and talking points." And, my friend, McCain is no better.
Maybe you got mixed up. We’re talking about the Republican Party. But your point is well taken. It’s what I was wondering above. Won’t the Republicans eventually expect more of her than the ridiculous part she’s played so far?
Lie, lie, lie, accuse, abuse, lie, lie, insult, accuse, abuse, lie, lie, and lie. Wink, wink, perky, perky, wink, toss of the head, wink, perky, perky. And repeat.
Given that we’re talking about the modern Republican Party, the answer may be a simple "No."
blogreeder
When I read that earlier today I wondered whether Palin-juice would pick it up. Good to see you’re on top of it.
