The mother of all goalpost moves happened yesterday:
Q But Osama bin Laden is the one that — you keep talking about his lieutenants, and, yes, they are very important, but Osama bin Laden was the mastermind of 9/11 –
PERINO: No, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind of 9/11, and he’s sitting in jail right now.
I will be so happy to see these hacks hit the road. The sad thing in all of this is that just a few months ago, when it was clear it would be Obama and McCain, I was convinced that no matter who won, we would be better off than we are now with Bush and Cheney. Now that he has chosen a total wingnut liar as his VP, and after watching his shameless behavior the past couple of months, I no longer am so sure about that.

So was McCain 2000 the fake, or McCain 2008? Because I kinda liked McCain 2000. I wouldn’t even share a cab with McCain 2008.

This is a little long but because Michael Smerconish is a conservative, who first favored going to war in Iraq but now favors immediate withdrawal, it is worth reading. Smerc may be one of the rare rational voices on the right side of the aisle. I do not always agree with him but I do here.
It is outrageous that we have not caught or killed bin Laden; it is criminal that getting him became a lower level priority by Bush and Co. As a native New Yorker, I will NEVER forgive these bastards for subordinating bin Laden to Saddam Hussein.

My remembrance of 9/11 is poisoned by reflections on the accomplishments of the Bush Administration in the past seven years.
Over at the GOS, Bill in Portland Maine has posted some questions for the occasion.
Today, in Where’s George? we have Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers deployed to Venezuela for military exercises.

Oh, that’s right, you’re still kind of new at this.

This is like saying you don’t want to put Gambino in jail because you captured his second in command who devised a money-laundering scheme. Of course you want to get the top guy, because he authorized it. Same with bin Laden.
Also, by this same rationale, Eisenhower should not get any credit for the success of D-Day, because he did not actually devise most of the strategy for the landing.
Of course, it may be that the Bush Administration is laying the groundwork for future defenses that Bush cannot be held responsible for the various attrocities commited by his crime syndicate.
The Moar You Know
Well, I guess then that the war is over and we can bring all the troops home.
Right?

Supposedly, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to masterminding the 9/11 attack, Richard Reid shoe bombing and 1993 WTC bombing in March, 2007… after spending about 3-4 years in Gitmo.
Somehow this reminds me of a joke Soviet citizens used to tell each other in hushed tones during the 50’s:
One day, Stalin saw that his smoking pipe missing, so he sent one of his minions to find out who stole it. After about four hours, he found that he put his pipe in his desk, but forgot about it. So he summoned his minion to call off the search because he found his pipe. The minion replied, “But Comrade, we already have five people who confessed to stealing your pipe!”

McCain 2008 is the product of a Republican Senator run through the Rovian mill for eight years. I don’t think either of them are “fakes”. One is merely the product of Bush politics. John McCain is like a case study in what has happened to the GOP over the last decade.

What is the problem, citizens? We have always been at war with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

BTW, if I were defending bin Laden at trial for any role in played in the 9/11 attacks (I know this is a far-fetched hypothetical given that trials are no longer required in the Global War on Terror/Global War Against Islamic Extremism/Global War on Truth), this would be Exhibit A in my defense: “Well, even the US government admits that KSM was the mastermind of 9/11. My client cannot be held responsible for the actions of his associates.”

Brings to mind the Stephanie Miller Show nickname for Perino: That Lying Sack of Cute.
Coming in to work, a caller to the Miller show reminded me of how the Republicans have captured the hearts and minds of those who want to believe that the Bush Administration can do no wrong.
Conservative pundits and talk show hosts will never point out the lies and contradictions because their central goal — keeping Republicans in power — is more important than what happens to the country.
And a core of voters will ignore any other source of information that clearly points out the lies, contradictions and distortions of the Bush Administration because they just want to be safe from another attack. This works better for the Republicans than the traditional standbys, guns and religion.
It is not impossible for Obama and Biden to cut through the fog on this, but it is an uphill battle.
To diehard Republican supporters, that pig looks pretty damn cute with lipstick on it.

I was going to post that earlier but was morbidly distracted by MSNBC replaying the entire morning of 9/11/01. I did mute the volume so I could read the whole thing with as much concentration as I could muster this morning.
Sobering.
NOT that I am advocating sobriety in this current climate.

Is there an upper limit to the number of times we can use fuck in a single comment? Because at this point, I really want to break it.

…I no longer am so sure about that.
If by “no longer am so sure” you are saying, I am as sure as the sun rising in the east tomorrow that If McWarPresident II and MooseBurger are elected we will be far more rat fucked than we are now with Bush and Cheney, then I’m with ya bro.

In 1993 Mir Aimal Kasi killed two people outside CIA headquarters in McLean, Virginia, and fled to the same border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan where bin Laden is hiding. The Clinton administration tracked him down and arrested him in 1997.
The time since the 9/11 attacks is twice as long as US involvement in World War II, and bin Laden’s still on the loose. As The Daily Show pointed out in 2004, bin Laden is a “really good hider.”

And Perino says this on the day before the anniversary of the attacks, yet. How utterly despicable.
Is this truly what the Republican party has become? Is this truly how today’s Republicans want to be identified? Honestly, I’m not really shocked or angered at this. I’m just grossed out. I can accept that the Republican party will likely never be what it once was. But good Lord. This???

Goddamn I want to slap that mendacious empty-souled bitch so hard right now.
That’s never happened before.

Word.
There is an old fashion word for this, placing one’s own narrow benefit above the good of the country:
Treason
It is time we start calling the so-called conservative politicians and pundits what they really are: traitors against this country.
