From the comments: This is an atrocity. Obama is now Jesus, or Moses, or something else McCain is not.
I was actually Laughing Out Loud at how stupid the ad was. Can I hear an OMFG?
McCain has nothing. Remember the attack line Conservatives used, Bush Derangement Syndrome? Can we start an Obama Derangement Syndrome meme? McCain’s ads have not focused one iota on what McCain will do as president – except prolong a war and make tax cuts permanent (which I am totally for – in peacetime.) They’re completely focused on Barack Obama and how popular he is. It’s quite funny when you think about it. McCain is grasping, big time.
Oh, and from the comments as well, Bush or Batman – equally as funny!
Dreggas
See hardball tonight, I diaried it here. This is not helping McCain.

McCain indeed has nothing. But neither did Bush, and that dumbfuck somehow ended up being [technical] President. The shit has a proven track record, much as “we’re above that” does. We’re fucked.

Shrug, he may have nothing, but I still am convinced the Republicans will find a way to win in the fall.

Remember, McCain was nominated because he was the least shitty of the GOP choices. He was nominated because he was not the typical republican. He just threw his brand in the shitter to lauunch this attack. D.U.M.B.

Speaking of having nothing. Are you ever going to post something at this site that means something. You feed nothing but sour fodder.

Their campaign actually PAID for that shite? Holy crap.
They really are at the bottom of the barrel.
BTW. There is no “going back” from this. They can’t attack attack attack then play all nice and friendly in the fall. McCain is going to be obliterated by the quasi-permanent nature of the internet.

I’m sure the time will come when American voters are so miserable and their lives so wretched, that they simply can’t afford to vote for McCain or any other Republican, but I’m not sure that time is now.

This ad is pathetic. McCain might get some bounce out of this and the other inane ads for a bit, but I don’t think it’ll stick.
We knew this was coming.

Mike Deaver used to say the only thing that matters about an ad is how it looks with the sound off. Turn the sound off and all of McCain’s “attack” pieces make Obama look f’ing awesome! Thanks a lot, Phillipine Insurrection veteran Juan McCain!!!

Well, of course. Inspirational speeches about upbeat optimism and hope for a better future are clearly Un-American and are thus thoroughly antithetical to the Republican Party.
The sooner we come down to earth, face the miserable reality of our limited future(s) and vote for John McCain, the better off we’ll all be. I mean, just who the in the fuck do you think you all are, anyway?
Now put down those stupid, foolish dreams and get the Fuck Back To Work, you peons.

O.K. maybe I hate McCain and the republicans too much to see straight, but this ad is beyond stupid. If this ad works for anyone, I mean if anyone sees this and thinks this is not bad, terrible, horrible then that person needs their head examined.

See my link in my post, Andrea Mitchell nailed it today when she said that the fact is that McCain is being extremely disrespectful to Obama. I think the MSM might just be pissed at McCain for the moment but they aren’t buying it.

Lessee now, Karl sez “attack the strengths” so where are Obama’s strengths? Just about everything. And then we make fun of each strength in turn. A child could do it, and it’s actually OK cuz the morons who buy this stuff deserve whoever they vote for .

And considering his base, I think that analogy is going to backfire hard on McCain. Either he’s suggesting that Obama is awesome, or that Moses’ acts were beyond belief. I smell a smackdown from the base coming.

I think Billmon nailed it. *If* they use this to drag the discussions out of policy and into the gutter completely, and put Obama on the defensive, then St McMaveric can go back to be the kindly grandfather, as opposed to the drunk one with the axe, and the Village will happily follow along behind, forgetting all this tut-tut about not being gentlemenly. After all, politics is not a gentlemen’s game, unless you’re talking about who threw the race card.

Obama’s ace-in-sleeve will be the debates, IMO. McCain is a horrible ad-libber, prone to pauses, looks of “How fucking dare you ask me that!”, and quantifiable frustration. If Obama is to have a chance, it’ll be during thiese debates.
Otherwise these commercials are absolutely killing him.
jrg
Not at this rate. S,N! went through this a couple of days ago (I’m too lazy to find the link). In a nutshell, if you’re willing to put money on that, you could make quite a bit – the betting sites are putting McCain’s odds in the 34% range.
Ads like this are not going to help McCain – this feels more like an SNL skit starring Obama than a political ad.
Martin
National vote means shit. Just ask Gore. Obama is killing when you look at how polling predicts electoral votes.
The ultimate downside to the GOP strategy is that by conceding that most of their voters won’t bother to think about what McCain is charging or research it, they’re condemning the GOP to be the party of mental midgets. If you’ve redefined your base to be idiots, you’re long-term fucked bad.

Here is my personal, anecdotal survey. Now granted I live in Eugene, half of which is caught in a sixties timewarp. But the other half is actually pretty conservative and descended from Scandinavian dairy farmers, and there’s a really close race for mayor this year between a liberal and a conservative.
Anyhow . . . . in 2004 I saw more Kerry-Edwards bumpers stickers thand Bush-Cheney by a considerable margin, but there were still a fair number of the latter. This year there are a lot of Obama bumperstickers and lawn signs in town. A lot. And I haven’t seen one McCain sign. Not one. Not even at the houses in my neighborhood that loyally display signs for all the repug causes.
Thom
Right near the start they have him saying, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” thereby destroying their message. The droobs.

The GOS has a nice breakdown and is generally optimistic.
Sure, by national polls, we’ve got a whole bunch of Bush dead-enders out there. But the pool of swing states is huge, and everything is trending Obama’s way. And McCain is suffering the Guiliani effect. The more people see him, the less they like him.
Honestly, I’m just waiting for Bob Barr to seriously step into the race. Once rock-ribbed conservatives start seeing McCain and Barr side-by-side, I think we’re going to see a whole lot of bleed in the libertarian direction. McCain has inertia with him – Americans have been Republican for so long that they’re still warming up to the idea of Democrats in charge – but the revolution is, in fact, coming. By November things are going to get worse for the GOP. Kerry and Gore never had it this good three months out from election day.

McCain is not spending a lot of money on ads since the so called MSM is running them for free. Soon they will be saying that McCain is leading even though he spent less money without mentioning that they ran his ads for free. Come September McCain will say that his campaign took a wrong turn and went to far and he is so very sorry. The media, including Joe Klein will just melt in his hands and all will be forgiven. Yeah, I’m with John, McCain can win.
nightjar
Maybe, but if that happens we will have a president soaked thru with enough political and personal sewage, it will look like America is only a stones throw away from going the way of the Romans. It will also be apparent that racial fear rules the great land of the free, and no amount of bullshit spin with wash out the stain.
The choice is clear, even for those with half a brain that the right choice in this particular election is for the democratic party to run things, at least for awhile. Hell, I bet most rational wingnuts secretly think this. If for no other reason than to balance out the excesses of wingnut governance. All that should be required that the dem candidate be qualified intellectually and morally.
What we have is an obviously well qualified man who happens to be an African American, but by any standard a genuine American of decent moral fiber. For enough fools to reject him by willing belief, via asinine accusations and gutter advertisements, that he is not a qualified and genuine American, means it’s because his skin and heritage is black. And that will decide what kind of people we can honestly call ourselves. It won’t be anything nice.
Zifnab
This has nothing to do with race. If Colin Powell or Condi Rice was running, the GOP would be trumpeting the historical nature of Republicans breaking glass ceilings to the four winds. Clarence Thomas is regularly regarded as a wingnut hero. Michael Steele holds a strong position in the Republican party. George Bush has run one of the most black and latino inclusive administrations in history. Their policies are shit, but the GOP knows (or at least used to know) how to build an image and they know how to trash one.
So for decades large numbers of Americans have been indoctrinated into believing Democrats are bad. All evidence to the contrary, the baby boomer generation got hypnotized by the Rush Limbaugh media machine and bought into a very bad bill of goods.
2006 seemed to indicated that America was bucking this trend. I think 2008 is going to shatter the GOP political power base. When Denny Hastert’s district flips blue, the chips are really down. Obama is going to win in a landslide.

Your talking about the wingnut braintrust, unfortunately they only have one vote each and don’t add up to a large block. As far as rank and file GOP and certain blocks of labor democrats goes, to say it has nothing to do with race is purely pie in the sky type thinking. It is only a question of how many otherwise intended dem candidate voters (GOP and others) give in to their base fears and vote on those fears. I still think Obama will win, but I am not so naive to think it will be by much. My comment was about people who know the way they should (want) to vote, but willingly choose to use false charges (proxy for race) as an excuse to vote for the Republican. Otherwise, I hope your right, we shall see.

If McNasty is so damned proud of this ad, where is the smiling face and voice over that says he approves this ad? They sure are big on using tremulous voices proclaiming Obamas good works but not proud enough for the rotting pustule faced old man to give us one of his Sardonic denture and polident flavored grins as he claims its all in good clean fun. I agree. They are really digging to get the dreck off of the bottom of the Repuglican barrel, but they have nothing else to work with. McCain is a train wreck and Obama is killing him in the ‘popularity contest’, so to say. They are trying to kneecap Obama in any way they can, and they will only dig deeper in the barrel after each attempt fails. Expect it to get much worse, and real soon. The right is desperate and it shows.

My prediction — McCain, with an EC majority, but a minority — actually, the second largest plurality — of the popular vote, facing a House that’s 250-185 Democratic, and a Senate that’s 59-41 Dem + Independent.
Total governmental meltdown.

Another benefit of the electoral college. If Mississippi is that bad (I have a hard time believing that the 45% of MS population that is black is racist against Obama, but I’ll go with it for a sec) then those electoral votes are as lost with 100% McCain as with 51% McCain. Obama is best off with them all piled up in the south.
And good luck with McCain winning *anything* in the west or north if people assume he’s out there yelling ‘nigger’.

Nah, its that the Republicans’ audience is much more suited for race-baiting than the Dems.
Right now, McCain is rallying the base by playing Grumpy McLibhater. The problem is that he’s fighting upstream with a pair of boatanchors named ‘Shit Economy’ and ‘George W. The thing that blows my mind is- I’ve seen fascists go into transports of delight over how much of a good Bush message is provided by- the new Batman movie.
And now we can’t tell which was Bush, and which was Batman.
The fabric of reality is REALLY breaking down.
In that light, is it really safe for McCain to be doing an elaborate ad that does almost nothing but portray Obama in messianic terms?
For FUCK’s sake, haven’t we been trained to blindly accept all messianic terms so long as it’s the President? is there ANY difference, ANY DIFFERENCE between what they’re saying about Obama and how they’d like people to view a Republican president?
I think things are a LEETLE out of control by this point…
CT
I think their plan is to be sleazy now when few are paying serious attention, just to get the anti-Obama memes circulating, then flip to kindly Gramps mode in the fall and try and capture enough of the middle to win.
But it seems that their ads are drawing much more mockery than anything else right now. I think the Obama counter of “is this all they can offer, with all the real problems facing America?” is a good way to go, but it should be hammered incessantly-“when all they have to offer is 4 more years of the failed policies of GW, of course they don’t want to talk about real issues.”
El Cruzado
While I agree with you, it’s also true that there was no youTube back in 2000. Many people now have the ability (and many of them use it) to avoid the middleman when it comes to political information and while I think the effect will still be there, it will be greatly muffled compared to 2000.
W.E.B. Adamant
Speaking of Bush or Batman, did you see Andrew Klavan’s OpEd in the Washington Post? I understand how a vague understanding of who Batman is might lead to some similarities, but people, Bush is definitely not Batman. I posted about that here, but man is it hard to try and consider that kind of BS a legitimate argument.
But these are the same people who nod like they understand what the fuck “liberal fascism” is, so I shouldn’t be surprised.
W.E.B. Adamant
And that ad is ridiculous, but it’s nothing different than what RedState’s been yammering on about for months.
Although it’s a very odd choice to make into an ad, and will only feed into the people who already believe it. The thing is, the ad never clearly states that it doesn’t believe that Obama is the Messiah. Considering that they’re campaigning for the “retarded” vote, I’m not sure that some people won’t think that McCain is affirming that indeed, Obama is Jesus, but please don’t vote for the savior.
slightly_peeved
I’m guessing the next ad in this series is:

“McCain indeed has nothing. But neither did Bush, and that dumbfuck somehow ended up being [technical] President. The shit has a proven track record, much as “we’re above that” does. We’re fucked.”
Indeed we are. You can’t view these attacks in isolation. They have to be seen as part of an elaborate narrative that the GOP is constructing for the fall campaign. By themselves the Moses or Paris/Britney ads are clearly weak, but combine them with the other attacks that McCain is launching against Obama nearly every day and you begin to see a destructive political narrative. Obama is being gradually painted as an exotic, vaguely foreign, pampered liberal who is too far removed from “middle American” values to be trusted with the presidency. Throw in healthy doses of good old fashioned American racism (it was no accident that white, blond women were chosen for the Paris/Britney ad or that you see Obama playing basketball in the “wounded troops” ad) and you end up with a McCain Presidency.
Remember that plenty of smart political observers didn’t pay any attention to the swiftboat ads against Kerry until it was too late. Only in retrospect could we clearly see how damaging those attacks really were.
We’ve all seen this play before and we know how it will end. Repeat after me: “President McCain.” “President John McCain.”

If the MSM can’t find anything bad on Obama to run with, the next best thing is to bring out detestable people to defend him. Obama has nothing to do with these people, but that little fact is not important to the MSM. Guilt by association, however non-existent that association is, works. Anything the MSM can do that generates outrage generates viewers and generates more advertising revenue.
Hey, it’s only business! Gotta make money!
I think the ‘summer silly political season’ is a creation of the MSM to drum up viewers for the slow summer season. If things are boring, people will not watch the news. So they generate ‘news’ and it pays off for them.
There is no such thing as news, it is all propaganda. Whether it is pro-Obama/anti-McCain or anti-Obama and pro-McCain, it is all propaganda. We have to be the ones who monitor the bullshit indicators and decide what is fact and what is not, and most Americans are too stupid or lazy to do so.
The press counts on this, as do the politicians. As long as the American people are fat and happy, they don’t care one bit about how this country is run. They have theirs, and nothing else matters to them.

The median voter is 61 years of age, and broadcast television and radio are still far and away the most commonly used sources of information about the candidates.
24 million every tune in each night for network news — six times cable news’ audience. And only 4% of all adults over 18 watch video online at home every day, and 14% watch once a week. In comparison, 93% of all adults spend at least an hour a day watching television.

As noted above, I think this is an attempt to play the “Anti-Christ card” (and if so, kudos to the republicans for inventing that card). I think we need to work on possible future republican attack lines, the more ridiculous, the more likely:
“Voting for Barack doesn’t make you gay, but it doesn’t exactly make you straight either..”
“Barack Obama, he hasn’t raised the dead.”
“John McCain. Definitely not mentioned in the book of revelations.”
“Barack Obama says he has a health care plan, but he also says he’s never had an erection lasting more than four hours, John McCain has had several erections lasting up to 8 hours and nearly destroying his sexual function. Vote McCain”

Yeah, right. Because in peacetime the richest Americans still need all the money they can possibly get and the US doesn’t have any significant unmet needs. In peacetime we don’t need to cut the deficit or pay off the debt; neither do we need universal health care, nor to begin rebuilding the national infrastructure.
Nope, in peace time the very best thing we could do would be to make George Bush’s tax cuts permanent. It’s no wonder Republicans win so many elections.

No point in spoiling the family barbeque with war coverage or anything. Plus the economy is tanking and that’s depressing so let’s ignore that and talk about Obama’s weight.
Seriously, by the old calendar the silly season was July, August and a bit of September. Now it’s all year round. Must global climate change.

At this point any PR is good PR for McCain. The dumb ads have you discussing him. They are successful in that respect.

If it comes down to it, root for the Iranians to win.

The flip side of this ad would be the dems running an ad saying “John McCain is a 72-year old man” with images drooling Alzheimer patients hunched over in wheelchairs.

maxbaer (not the original) Says:
‘I’m not sure that ad works that well. If you don’t pay a lot of attention to the narration you might think it was almost pro-Obama. I realize they’re still pushing the arrogant meme.’
Yups. That was the point. The dumbfucks will be confused by all that religious imagery being associated with Obama.

Well, Obama says McCain campaign is not being racist, just cynical.
I can’t wait for the next McCain attack ad cuz there is just no telling what they will dream up in response to this.
Let me guess: old POW footage + ‘Obama says McCain is cynical about America. A man who has served his country in battle and suffered as a prisoner of war. How can anyone who loves this country soooo much be cynical about America?!’
Any takers?

“What do you call the mouse shadow on the second moon of Arakis?”
“We call that one, Obama.”
“Could I be known as Barack Obama?”
“You are Barack Obama, and your mother shall be a Sayyadina among us… We welcome you.”
“The dream unfolds.”

Ok, that isn’t an actual McCain ad, right?

Except for Brittney, I’d vote for any of the others against McCain.
Actually, considering what an asshole McCain, WTF…Brittney, too…although I’d worry a lot once she took office. No such problem with Paris…at least she knows how to handle money…shit, she gets about 2 mil to appear at a freaking fashion show.

Well, shit-howdy…why didn’t I think of this before? Get Tiger Woods on the ticket with Obama. Even racists seem to like him.
Whatta ticket!

Exactly. I did a little State poll-checking the other day and Obama looks very solid for 264 Electoral Votes in the following states:
(CA,NY,IL,PA,MI,NJ,MA,WA,MD,MN,WI,CT,IA,OR,NM,HI,ME,NH,RI,DE,VT,& DC).
McCain looks good for 176, with 108 still fairly close. Among those close calls is Colorado with 9 EV, but CO seems to lean over towards Obama by about 3% right now. That would mean 273 – enough to win. Florida (27EV), Ohio (20EV)& Virginia (13EV) are very close and could go either way, although I think Obama will carry at least one of them. Various polls in those three states show both candidates ahead by small margins, generally 2% or less. McCain leads by maybe 3% to 5% in NC (15EV), MO (11 EV – which I’ve already included in McCain’s EV total), SD (3EV), and ND(3EV). NV (5EV) currently shows Obama slightly ahead, although I’m not especially confident there. MT (3EV) actually shows a 1% Obama lead in the last poll, but I also consider that very iffy.
So in the Electoral College things look pretty promising, although not completely safe. Remember that at this point the 264 I show for Obama look very solid and I think the 9EV in Colorado look relatively secure.
Yeah, it’s going to be MUCH closer than it ought to be considering what a fuck-wit candidate John McCain truly has proven himself to be. I’m afraid McCain’s “Beware the scary black man” candidacy is going to influence way too many voter’s, but I’m looking at that to lock down mostly states McCain figured to win anyway and not to tip any of Obama’s solid states. How many Florida, Ohio, & Virginia voters will dive into the mire with McCain? I guess that’s the big question, but without McCain having any positive platform to run on I don’t think he’ll prevail in all 3 of them.
Hope not, anyway.
