I don’t even get this:
ABC News’ Christianne Klein reports that at a breakfast with Republican insiders at the Capitol Hill Club this morning, former White House senior aide Karl Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as “coolly arrogant.”
“Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” Rove said, per Christianne Klein. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”
Does this make any damned sense? Since when do people look at Obama and think “He goes to a country club?” At least the “radical liberal with black panther racist priest and oh by the way he is a stealth muslim” BS they are peddling makes sense, even if it is a silly and stupid smear, but Country Club? When I think of country clubs, I think of the Enron crowd that puts folks like Mitt Romney and George Bush and Kay Bailey Hutchinson in office. But black liberals from Illinois named Obama?
Is Hamas into country clubs or something?

It’s standard Rovian projection. Back in 2004 Peggy Noonan had a column, since immortalized on the internets, that made similar claims about Kerry. the fantasy scenario was a house fire that time, and Bush would be the caring neighbor who would call the fire dept. and make sure that all the kids got out safely.
While in reality (which I realize has a left wing bias), Kerry was the man who in a moment of stress performed the hiemlich maneuver on a chocking senate colleague (who happened to be a republican, not that it mattered), and the man and his wife acknowledged, likely saved his life. History awaits a similar incident for George Bush – at least there’s likely many incidents when he *didn’t* drive drunk, so I guess that’s somewhat heroic.
Rove is trying to frame Obama in an Elitist manner, since the GOP candidate is the one with 8 houses.
Martin
Figures the Republican wouldn’t remember that many country clubs still effectively exclude african americans. You think someone who looks like Obama can actually stand there and make snide comments?
And since Rove is an Alabama boy, he knows a lot of these places quite well.
Grumpy Code Monkey
Rove’s never been one to let reason or logic get in the way of political and personal attacks. It doesn’t have to make sense; it just has to sound bad to someone within earshot.
I mean, shit, the commentariat at No Quarter is living proof that the tactic works; the cognitive dissonance there is powerful enough to threaten a rip in the fabric of spacetime. Dollars to donuts Agent Flowbee runs with this in the next day or two.
sistermoon
Let’s see… radical Muslim, hates White people and wants to overthrow the government when he’s not looking down his nose at people from his seat at the country club.
Wow. As the late, great George Carlin would say, this is proof that Karl Rove is “stunningly full of shit”.

“Snide comments”?

They tried attacking him from the right and it failed. Now they’re hammering him from the left. I predict epic fail.

He just wanted to use Obama and “coolie” in the same sentence. It’s all about creating an association in the lister’s brain. Karl Rove is an evil genius.
Lavocat
Just a Rovian way of saying Obama’s “an uppity negro”.
How very special. I’ve never seen a man so in need of being someone’s prison bitch, like Rove.
AnneLaurie
Wow, Karl Rove is reduced to accusing the MUP of being… Rush Limbaugh.* I guess even the hardcore Twenty-Eight Percenters are becoming disenchanted with the Bush/Cheney/Limpball “I got mine, Jack — bugger the rest of you” philosophy…
Or else Turdblossom is reduced to throwing totally random shite in the hope that some of it, somehow, will stick to the (possibly padded) walls of his audience’s little minds. Since he was talking to Republican “insiders” (aka Koolaid-drinkers) and Media Village Idiots, he wouldn’t worry about cognitive dissonance, since neither group has demonstrated much in the way of long-term memory. Maybe Rove has confused (hopes to confuse) Obama with Tiger Woods?
* Of course in Limbaugh’s case, the “beautiful date” would be rented.
Mike S
He actually said this at The Capitol Hill Club?
The funny thing is that he says these things without a trace of irony.
KCinDC
Apparently when Republicans want to talk about someone’s personality (or a fake personality that they want the media to apply to the person), they reach for familiar characters from their country club experience. What could be more natural?
The picture (especially the “beautiful date”) is awfully reminiscent of the oversexed black playboy attack they successfully used on Harold Ford Jr, just a little more ineptly played and ill-targeted.

So, Obama is a Republican?

The country club? Leave it to Rove to reference a place whose sport requires a ball washer.

Rove’s statement is indicative of the mental breakdown that many conservatives are having as they deal with Obama. Rove is clearly having a flashback to his early days as apprentice lackey to the WASP establishment. And it is not very pretty.
Who would have guessed that the evil genius of the GOP was still nurturing such a deep inferiority complex?

And let’s hope it works just as well for McCain.

Sounds like he came up with that during the GOP primaries to use against McCain, and just retargeted at Obama.

It’s part of the Right Wing’s Shotgun Smear.
(Li’l Davey Brooks’ column a couple days ago was basically serving up Another Reason You Can Not Like Obama. Brooks is only slightly better at the hidden-agenda opining than Safire. Safire would insert one simple, black-and-white talking point. Brooks goes for more of a pastel, pseudo-intellectual thread.)
Arrogant? Elitist? Black? Head-in-the-clouds? Chicago slickster? (See Brooks’ column). Egghead? Secret Muslim? America Hater? Which flavor smear fits your mood, Mr. Undecided Voter?
This is the attack, kids. This is what it looks like. It’s not going to all be Don’t Vote For The Scary Black Guy. The majority of the damage will be done by small, seemingly harmless shadings of the truth. Before you know it (like in September), a sizable section of the swing voters are polling uncomfortable with Obama.
How do you fight this? It’s tough.

Gimme a fuckin’ break already!

Senator Jesus would never be allowed in a Country Club. They don’t accept Jews.

That’s because Rove fancies himself the prince of GOP middle America, purveying the dreams of Ma and Pa Kettle to rise above the rabble and to sip brandy with “Presidents and Vice Presidents, GOP Members of Congress, Governors, state party leaders and influential Republicans everywhere.”
I bet it is. With all the glad-handing, toe-tapping and stolen money counting.

If Obama belongs to a country club, it’s probably not the one Fuzzy Zoeller belongs to.

Not very plausible. I’ll bet none of the country clubs Mr. Rove has been to would let a caddy get away with that.

To understand Rove’s bizarre framing, you have to pair it with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity pushing a “Obama is stupid” meme. Seriously, both those guys have repeatedly been trying to denigrate Obama as an idiot, an attack so obviously refuted everytime the MUP opens his mouth that it seems even more irrational than Rove’s weird characterization.
What you have to realize is that the GOP has been race-baiting, gay-baiting, immigrant-baiting, intellectual-baiting, everybody-who-is-not-a-straight-white-male baiting for decades…but at the national level those attacks have always been focused on straight white guys. But when you try and do the same things to a black guy, it looks and sounds and feel different to a lot of Americans. It’s like the difference between telling a Jewish joke in front of a Jewish audience and telling the same joke in front of a bunch of skinheads. The change in context makes all the difference.
Mike

I don’t know, “Always in Moderation” sounds like something Obama could say.

My favorite comment was from the other thread pointing out the grammar fail, since the cigarette is making snide comments.
Besides all the other wrongness, Karl is assuming that most Americans go to country clubs.
zoe from pittsburgh
It’s sort of an mind-bending comment. It is so utterly divorced from reality that it takes a minute to deconstruct what is so odd about it.
For one, it implies that the listener (as well as Rove himself) has been to a country club so often that he is complaining about “that guy” that stands in the corner trashtalking everyone. How much does one want to bet that Rove himself is a member of a country club and that Obama is not?
Second, Obama isn’t known for making off-color comments about anyone– if anything they might play the flip of this and assert that he’s too nice and not tough enough. (Ironically, McCain is known for having a temper and flip tongue.)
Finally, it acknowleges that Obama is affluent and successful enough to join an expensive country club– but that he doesn’t really belong and doesn’t deserve to be there. That a mostly white private club resentfully let him in because they had to but he’s really a very rude member. It’s sort of an unexpected tack– it’s as though they’re hinting that Obama isn’t really black at all. In other words– his blackness doesn’t make him anything special.
It’s not simple remark and I bet it’s sort of a trial balloon– casting Obama as the snooty, rude elitist– if they can give him a windsurfing Kerry sheen they’re going to try.
Thank goodness Obama and Kerry are worlds apart.
PK
I hear the James Bond theme music in the back ground. Seriously Obama would make a very good James Bond. If they can have a blond Bond why not a black Bond?
Chris Johnson
It’s not really going to work, but Karl Rove still has it. The idea is, this is an attack against Obama being superior- obviously superior- very much not the drunken incompetent frat boy type.
It won’t work because a lot of people WANT superior at this point, not just Jon Stewart- but it’s classic Rove, it’s attacking the enemy where he is strongest. Obama is just flat out better than your guy? Then try to make people uncomfortable with him BECAUSE he is just plain better.
Again, it won’t work, but it’s still classic Rove calculation. This is more or less all Rove HAS to work with, so you’ll see people trying to make McCain look down home and folksy, and we won’t be talking about the 8 houses or anything like that.
big cloud
Maybe Karl was having a 60’s style acid flashback and confused Obama with one of the Rat Pack, probably Sammy Davis Jr. or even Dean Martin with a dark suntan.

Speaking of Yglesias’s blog, I also mentioned there that Tim Dickinson at Rolling Stone had a good translation of that remark

The rule of slander politics is: if you yourself are vulnerable to a charge of elitism/sexism/racism, you blame your opponent of doing exactly that before the media can start labeling you with that sh-t.
Republicans are all rich, class-conscious, trust-fund babies? Accuse the Dems of that quickly and constantly. Republicans use racial codewords to smear ethnic candidates? Accuse those ethnics of using smears of their own (still no proof that Michelle Obama used that infamous Whitey insult, but what the hell, keep accusing her of it). Republicans responsible for gross misspending of federal funds, Republicans all hanging out with lobbyists on K Street, Republicans posing with framed pictures of Stalin on their walls? Dems do it, Dems do it, those naughty hippie Dems do it.

If there’s one positive to the 2nd term of Bush & Co., it’s watching the complete dismantling of the Rove Mystique. Has anyone in history gone from feared and respected to mocked and ridiculed so quickly without benefit of death? We once thought he was an evil genius, now we realize he’s an idiotic one-trick pony (rally the base, rally the base, rally the base). I longed for his frog march from the West Wing, but he’s actually been destroyed faster roaming the streets free than he would have in the federal pen.

That was no beautiful woman. That was Rove’s mom, trying to trick the martini drinking stranger into admitting paternity.

This is why, before the end of this campaign, we will see ugliness at a whole new level from desperate wingnuts. None of their sewer tactics will work, at least enough to make up for their terrible candidate or the despised record of GWB. It’s going to be a long 4 months.

Off-topic, but I learned a couple of Fun Senate Facts walking home from class this evening:

Won’t count as punishment. Fascists like Rove (Craig, Foley et al) are twisted, self-loathing poofs anyway (it’s where their sadism, love of violent domination and humiliation, and penchant for secrecy comes from). He’d like it too much.

What’s the issue? Rove is OBVIOUSLY confusing Obama with Tiger Woods.
After all, they ALL look the same, don’t they?
Bruce Moomaw
See the irresistible comment of one of Andrew Sullivan’s readers: “This is the dilemma that Rove and the Republicans have in their attempts to define Obama. On the one hand, there is the urge to use racial codes to gin up fear that Obama is some black radical, somewhere to the left of Al Sharpton. On the other hand, they want to play up the typical ‘liberal elitist’ attack, making him out to be some brie-loving snob out of a P.G. Wodehouse novel. What they don’t realize is that each attack undermines the other. One would be hard pressed to imagine someone who is both a Black Panther and a Whiffenpoof. It’s been fun to watch them try.”

Odd how this describes the white male characters in a TV show like Mad Men, or Dubya and his Skull and Bone cronies, or any of the numerous white men who belong to country clubs or to all the odd little men’s only clubs that the Republicans and the well-connected so enjoy.
What is predictably sad is the reductive political kabuki of network news shows. One longs for someone who would turn to Rove and simply ask, “Are you nuts? How many black people do you know who belong to country clubs?”
Why don’t you ask her what she’s afraid of?

While this was a veiled attempt to cast Barack Obama as an Uppity Negro, it really lays bare what Karl despises most: People that he is forced to brown nose to attain and maintain power. I also suspect that Karl hold a deep resentment towards people that have what he has always wanted. Mainly, an intimate relationship with someone other than his hand.
Dave_Violence
I’ve never been to a country club. Is this what goes on at Chevy Chase or Columbia CC? I know their golf courses… I, myself, used to be one of the guys who stood against the wall of the frat house basement holding a beer making snide comments about everyone who passes by. Chicks dug me for it.
georgia pig
It’s racist dogwhistle, not elitism. Black guy in country club, drinking a martini. See Davis, Sammy, stereotype of black guy hanging out with white guys who he doesn’t belong with. “Standing against wall” and “makes snide comments” reinforce the fact he doesn’t belong and that he’s resentful; otherwise he’d be hanging with Trip and Skippy and the other guys having a great old time at the bar talking about stock options. The cigarette is to remind of Obama’s blackness because, you know, black guys smoke, usually menthols like Parliament. Beautiful date = white girl (liberal) brought him along as a curiosity, but he’s only there for the booze and pussy. Classic Rove. The point is evoking racial stereotypes and tying them to Obama, i.e., he’s really “just another black guy,” and we all know what that means.

Of course this will cause the same uproar in the media as Michelle Obama’s “proud of my country” remark – won’t it? Bhutto’s death was “unfortunate” but she didn’t die in vain if it helped Johnny Boy win the primary.
We now know why Osama bin Laden is still on the loose.

The only difference between this description and Rove is that Rove doesn’t have the “beautiful date”…
DrDave
Isn’t his beautiful date in a burka?
Rove ought to STFU but he clearly can’t help himself.

Whatever Rove’s intention, projection of his own insecurities is a bit too obvious for anyone, even the a-holes, to take such comments too seriously. Actually, I think he’s projecting for the entire Republican establishment.
*wince* pssst, STFU, Karl, we’re still trying to look confident and manly in the face of our ‘epic failure’ here!

Um, and yes, the racism thing. But of course, that really goes without saying.

Yes, because all criticism of Obama is racist.
Just like all criticism of Hillary is sexist.

I think he referrenced country club because that’s HIS world.
Rove, are you really trying to use an example that most Americans can identify with by citing Obama as “that guy at the country club?”

It sounds like Nixon and the resentment between Franklins and Orthogonians.
Remember, Rove dropped out of college in order to be a ratfucker for Nixon. Obama, he was the sort who did not find graduating and excelling too difficult. Now, who has the status who is known as a lickspittle and a toady?
It is a weird bit of projection to put this in the context of a country club (and anyone who has lived at least within the periphery of the elite knows the racism facilitated by these organizations), but the point is the resentment. It is always about the resentment – the primary fuel of all class struggle.
myiq2xu
It has nothing to do with Rove’s personal issues.
It’s part of the strategy to paint Obama as a snooty liberal elitist.
Just like they painted Hillary as a cold, calculating ball-buster who felt entitled to the nomination.
That’s how the GOP plays the game.

When I went to Country Clubs, they were filled with guys that looked like… Karl Rove. One of the reasons I don’t do that no more.

Well, yeah. Think maybe since, improbably enough, Hillary became Bubba Joe McRegular Guy during the primary, just a boilermaker for me thanks, it could be an attempt to exploit that? It’s just a teensy bit ham-handed for my taste, though, even though he didn’t mention the Bentley which is undoubtedly valet parked outside.
And I actually think I do detect a hint of wistfulness behind it…Karl wishes he could have a beautiful date. And a large talking cigarette.

Picturing successful black men as snooty liberal elitists and ambitious women as cold, calculating ball-busters? Sounds like Rove’s personal issues leaked into the campaign to me. Somehow I don’t think he was given a great deal of respect by all the scary negros and too-good-for-him women who outclassed him in high school or college.
At the end of the day, the GOP playbook looks a great deal like the game teenage wanna-be beauty queens and douchebags played in grade school. The only difference is that POTUS doesn’t carry quite the same responsibility level as Head Male Cheerleader.

I was out running about a year ago and someone pulled their car up next to me, unrolled the window, and for a second I swear that I was going to see a real-life reenactment of the Wayne’s World gag, and he was going to ask me if I had any Grey Poupon. But he did ask if I knew where some country club was. Now, this is a solidly middle-class neighborhood. I mean, there are some fairly decent houses around but we are not talking Lexus in every driveway here. More like PT Cruiser.
Also, I’m running. I had a hard time deciding what exactly in the hell to say, since I had no fracking clue where a country club might be, and, oh by the way, I was running, not the neighborhood fracking directory.
It being 6:30 a.m. and I was kind of busy, I really couldn’t think of a sufficiently snappy comeback so I simply told him I had no clue.

I agree with you. Despite the fact that for the next 2 months I am living in her home, I have told her this to her face. It’s not going to matter.
But the point remains that this is a person who has voted for Carter, for Mondale, for Dukakis, Clinton, Gore and Kerry and will not be voting for Obama and as John wondered this is the kind of people this quote would affect and I named one.
MNPundit
Whoa, that was reverse quoted. Weird.
Also about Hispanics getting the shaft while blacks receive more assistance: this is true. I researched a paper on racism at my undergradute through the 1960s-mid-1980s and in terms of plans and actions there is a disproportionate focus in terms of university action on African Americans (though this is the upper Midwest, hispanics out-number blacks at this time about 2-1). I personally attribute this to media laziness and because of historical stuff (Civil War) and moreover I don’t see what the fuck Obama has to do with any of this but it does happen.
