John McCain hates war:
Thanks for the bold stance on war, McMaverick! TPM has more, although it is fair to point out that McCain LOVES the war in Iraq, and has some ideas about Iran, too:
In the abstract, McCain hates war. But when you give it a name and actually get it going, not so much.

i posted this over in the comments section of Tom Watson’s blog, who is trying to now steer his readers off the ledge.
that’s a tough sell, since, from reading the comments, its mostly Crazy Town over there, but hey, i tried:

OT, but Cole you’ll want to check this out if you haven’t already.
It’s Fox News, at their high-comedy worst. The fisking by TYT is exceptional. Weak sauce indeed.

Was McCain ever asked what he was thinking of when he said there were going to be more wars (I’m sorry to tell you)?

McCain to war: “I can’t quit you!”

Nice to see McCain is siding with the 7% Silent Majority who want to bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.

That’s some funny stuff. It’s even more amusing to watch these asshats who spent the past several months doing anything they could to rile up people against Obama now have to turn around and fix it.

Apparently, McCain loves him some warrantless wiretaps as well (Adviser Says McCain Backs Bush Wiretaps).

I am so sick of this bullsh*t claim from Republicans that “Nobody wants war.” They want war all the time. They love it. They absolutely adore it.
And when they can’t do it directly, they hire a bunch of thugs and warlords and terrorists indirectly and call them “freedom fighters” and what not.
jake
LOL. Don’t forget McCaniac’s protest song:
War! What is it good for?
Depends on who’s askin’, say it again.

Fixed.

“Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war”.
What a load of shit. We don’t nation-build or politicize national security, either. As if we can expect McCain to take this “principled” stance in light of the past 7 years of capitulation to Chimpy McFlightsuit.
If McCain has not been up to the challenge of confronting the fools and frauds in Washington until it was politically expedient, why should we expect him to do so after he is elected?
He may have been a fighter at one point, but he’s too old, too tired, and too entrenched in the GOP. He needs to be playing shuffleboard or watching Matock, he’s got neither the energy nor the credibility to clean up Washington or deal with the loons that comprise his party.

Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment,
Little souls who thirst for fight,
These men were born to drill and die.
The unexplained glory flies above them,
Great is the battle-god, great, and his kingdom —
A field where a thousand corpses lie.
Do not weep, babe, for war is kind.
Because your father tumbled in the yellow trenches,
Raged at his breast, gulped and died,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
Swift blazing flag of the regiment,
Eagle with crest of red and gold,
These men were born to drill and die.
Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
Make plain to them the excellence of killing
And a field where a thousand corpses lie.
Mother whose heart hung humble as a button
On the bright splendid shroud of your son,
Do not weep.
War is kind.

A good deconsrtuction of “McCain hates war” was done by Matt Yglesias of Atlantic:

What’s this I hear? War is BAD?
It seems to be very good for those that own stock in defense contractors, arms suppliers, casket manufacturers, and florists. KBR and Hallibuton have done very nicely as well.
Oh, and Dennis, thanks for the Stephen Crane poem. Nice touch!

Does McCain still get to make jokes concerning children of prominent Democrats, or has that job been farmed out to someone else for the election cycle? Because making fun of children is sooo much fun…
maxbaer (not the original)
Did he just call Bush a fool and a fraud?

So, why is it that the nonexistent tape of Michelle Obama saying ridiculous things gets tons of play, and the actually-existing tapes of John McCain saying ridiculous things get none?
malraux
I’m pretty sure McCain’s dislike of war is in “its character building” mindset, rather than the “its bad for all involved” mindset. So war is unpleasant, but not something that should be avoided.

To the tune of Don’t like the drugs:
Norm life baby “we’re white and oh so hetero and our sex is missionary.”
Norm life baby “we’re quitters and we’re sober our confessions will be televised.”
You and I are underdosed and we’re ready to fall
Raised to be stupid, taught to be nothing at all
I don’t like the wars but the wars like me
I don’t like the wars, the wars, the wars
Norm life baby “our god is white and unforgiving we’re piss tested and we’re praying.”
Norm life baby “I’m just a sample of a soul made to look just like a human being.”
Norm life baby “we’re rehabbed and we’re ready for our 15 minutes of shame.”
Norm life baby “we’re talkshown and we’re pointing just like christians at a suicide.”
You and I are underdosed and we’re ready to fall
Raised to be stupid, taught to be nothing at all
I don’t like the wars but the wars like me
I don’t like the wars, the wars, the wars
Funny thing, only had to change one word but the rest of the lyrics fit…

McCain hates war but, ordnance as a tool of diplomacy is double-plus-good!

So he’s calling both Bush and Lieberman fools. Someone should ask him about that.

I wish I could find the U-tube of McInsane singing the Beach Boys song, “Barbara Ann”, with HIS words “Bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran.” Then the smirk and chuckle (when nobody else laughed and he was forced to laugh at his own “joke”).
Yeah right, he “hates” war.

YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!!!
Fox News attempts to “take down” Obama and just ends up looking pitiful.
My god. Maybe all that talk about the “arsenal” that their oppo-teams have dug up is just the bluff of someone who is shit out of ammo. I doubt it, but this really is pathetic!

To be fair to McCain, it really does take a Maverick™ to openly support torture.

Thanks ZZYZX,

I still think it’s interesting that McCain just called Bush a Fool and a Fraud.
How is that going to go over with the base?
jrg
That was a dog-whistle to everyone with an IQ over 90. The 28%ers won’t figure out that McCain was talking about Bush. For the remaining 72%, this repudiation is too little, too late.

The line “Only a fool or a fraud would talk romantically about war” is apalling. President Abraham Lincoln, one of the most memorable, wise, and honorable presidents of the United States, spoke in a romantic war about war. No, he didn’t speak of it in the fairy tale unrealistic happily ever after way, but in the literary way of freedom.
ro·man·tic [roh-man-tik] –adjective- of, pertaining to, or characteristic of a style of literature and art that subordinates form to content, encourages freedom of treatment, emphasizes imagination, emotion, and introspection, and often celebrates nature, the ordinary person, and freedom of the spirit
I can only hope that in my lifetime I will witness the inauguration of a president that speaks romantically about war. Maybe then our nation’s leaders will be thrown into reality and realize that forcing a foreign nation to change from their normal lifestyles is not the way to change the world (or lower gas prices). I can only hope that I will witness wisdom in Washington, the kind I have only read about in history books. I can only hope that our next president will speak in a romantic way, a way of freedom, nature, and the God Given rights our founding fathers wrote of in the Declaration of Independence. It seems that today, the only way to walk into the oval office is as a president that shows no evidence of posessing a brain, or as a janitor that was wisdom and knowledge beyond measure, but cannot succeed in our corupt country.
