I see the new meme circulating in the Anti-Obama/Pro-Clinton blogosphere is that the Obama campaign “inflamed” the RFK remarks and created a media firestorm, which unfairly attacked our Lady of Inevitability:
But even as both sides tried to tamp down the flap, some Clinton supporters pointed out that the Obama campaign had responded quickly on Friday after the New York senator had made the remarks to an editorial board in South Dakota.
McAuliffe accused the Obama group of “inflaming” the issue by issuing that response and then the “hyped-up press” took her comments out of context.
Clinton’s supporters said Robert Kennedy’s son understood what she meant and her words were not about Obama.
“They had nothing to do with Senator Obama,” Clinton campaign adviser Howard Wolfson said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “And so there would be no reason for her to apologize to Senator Obama.”
Imagine that! Politics is being played! Surely we all remember this:
A political tempest over Barack Obama’s comments about bitter voters in small towns has given rival Hillary Rodham Clinton a new opening to court working class Democrats 10 days before Pennsylvanians hold a primary that she must win to keep her presidential campaign alive.
Obama tried to quell the furor Saturday, explaining his remarks while also conceding he had chosen his words poorly.
But the Clinton campaign fueled the controversy in every place and every way it could, hoping charges that Obama is elitist and arrogant will resonate with the swing voters the candidates are vying for not only in Pennsylvania, but in upcoming primaries in Indiana and North Carolina as well.
***The Clinton campaign handed out “I’m not bitter” stickers in North Carolina, and held a conference call of Pennsylvania mayors to denounce the Illinois senator. In Indiana, Clinton did the work herself, telling plant workers in Indianapolis that Obama’s comments were “elitist and out of touch.”
Campaigning in Muncie, Ind., Obama addressed the issue at length. “I didn’t say it as well as I should have,” he said at Ball State University.
***Clinton attacked Obama’s remarks much more harshly Saturday than she had the night before, calling them “demeaning.” Her aides feel Obama has given them a big opening, pulling the spotlight away from troublesome stories such as former President Clinton’s recent revisiting of his wife’s misstatements about an airport landing in Bosnia 10 years ago.
Obama is trying to focus attention narrowly on his remarks, arguing there’s no question that some working class families are anxious and bitter. The Clinton campaign is parsing every word, focusing on what Obama said about religion, guns, immigration and trade.
Clinton hit all those themes in lengthy comments to manufacturing workers in Indianapolis.
“I was raised with Midwestern values and an unshakable faith in America and its policies,” she said. “Now, Americans who believe in the Second Amendment believe it’s a matter of constitutional right. Americans who believe in God believe it’s a matter of personal faith.”
“I grew up in a churchgoing family…,” she continued. “The people of faith I know don’t ‘cling’ to religion because they’re bitter. People embrace faith not because they are materially poor, but because they are spiritually rich …
“I also disagree with Senator Obama’s assertion that people in this country ‘cling to guns’ and have certain attitudes about immigration or trade simply out of frustration,” she said.
If I use Hillary’s own words, will I be called a misogynist? I sure hope not:
“If you can’t stand the heat, don’t run for president because it’s a really hot kitchen in the White House, I’ll tell you that much,” she said.
No doubt. And if there are any Balloon Juice readers in Montana, South Dakota, or Puerto Rico, I sure would love one of those “I AM NOT AN ASSASSIN” bumperstickers or buttons the Obama campaign no doubt is handing out right now.

If the situation weren’t so sad it would be all funny. What is fascinating to watch is Obama and his advisors learn in light speed how to not only overcome his own mistakes but to turn it around in magnanimous deftness to take the high ground when the other guy (or gal) screws up. These people are pros and they work their magic with a high level of honesty and class, as compared to the Rovian election successes. McCain doesn’t have a chance, unless JR. manages to starts WW 3 before November, and even then not, much of one.

Not to mention that when the rumors circulated last week that there were discussions between the camps regarding having HRC become the veep, she accused the Obama camp of planting those rumors. And this is in spite of quotes directly from Bill affirming that sentiment. She’s a hack, and part of the Nixon/Atwater/Rove-style politik that does not want to go quietly in spite of the writing being on the wall.

OK, Senator Obama is a grown-up, if he wants an apology, he can ask for it.
Nevermind about him, I (as a concerned voter) want an apology to me.
Why, for what?
Every goddam day for months now, I pray to God every time I turn on the TV, that the first thing I see isn’t some crime scene with a bunch of yellow tape and Secret Service crawling all over the place, and somber voices announcing that “this is another tragic moment in the history of American politics…”
Every goddam day for months now, I pray to God every time I drive into to work, that the first thing that I hear from my co-workers when I get into the office, before I even have a chance to take my coat off, isn’t: “OMG did you hear what happened I can’t believe it’s so terrible I can’t believe they sho..”
Every goddam day for months now, I pray to God every time I drive to a gas-station or restaurant or bar or other public gathering place, that the first thing I see won’t be a huge crowd of people standing around a TV monitor in shocked silence, and all us will remember from that day forward where we were when the news first broke.
Every goddam day for months now, I pray to God every time I turn my computer on, that when I launch a browser window and start up with google news, that I won’t see a black banner across the top of the page, and an entire screen full of stories about how “a terrible tragedy has come back to haunt the United States just like in 1968…”
and Hillary Clinton, without meaning to, without thinking, said something that pissed all over those fears, and now has the goddam fucking gall to take it as an opportunity to poke a stick in the eye of anybody who might be just a little too sensitive about her innocent comments that have been twisted by the evil media and the evil Obama campaign, just because she thinks there may be some small advantage to playing the innocent victim in this fuckey-fuck-fuckup of hers.
And for that I want an apology.
from her.
directly.
to me and the millions of other people who feel the same way.
And I’m not going to say what my reaction to her will be when I inevitably do not get that apology, or anything even remotely like it, and in fact get pretty much the exact opposite, because there aren’t enough obscenities in the fucking English language to do a respectable job of it.

Not much to add, when after all that, they go into victim mode because the Obama campaign called the remarks “unfortunate” and said they had no place in the campaign. Add to that all the cries of sexism, and the insistence that Obama is personally responsible for condemning every instance of it himself. And add to all that myiq joking how Obama can’t take a punch. Yup, it’s been something to see.

Honestly?
That’s what turned me off early on. Projection is the last refuge of the scoundrel. No, strike that. Projection is the FIRST refuge of the scoundrel. The moment I see projection, is the moment I know to oppose something.
And the Clinton campaign..and even worse, I think her movement unfortunately, is neck deep in projection. More than a multiplex so to speak.
Projection is how bad people get by. It’s the Big Lie. It’s the silver-tongued devil that escaped from Pandora’s Box.
Maggie
Great rant.
Speaking as someone who does think she was just talking about the timing, her non-apology nonetheless rankles a good bit. It’s one of those things where even if she means what she says she meant, she should be able to see how others read it the other way. But of course, she can’t. Because in Hillaryland, all reality must bend to Hillary’s reality. She then compounds it by trying to throw this back onto Obama, as if he hasn’t been the model of restraint through all of this. And so many of her followers mindlessly follow along. Everything bad under the sun is down to Obama. Ugh. Just. Ugh.

Hillary doesn’t campaign, she goes to war … like a proper Rovian republican. After the nominating precess is over, I expect her and Billy to commiserate with Zell and Joe. She very much reminds me of the current resident of the White House … although she has a triple digit I.Q…. Secretive, infallible, incompetent (look at the campaign she’s run), prizes loyalty over competence, invents ever more ridiculous excuses for bad behavior and failure. She’s bitter; she’s toast.
And Billy, (who I supported and defended too long,) in the run up to the Texas primary, went on the RUSH LIMBAUGH SHOW (I checked Rush’s archives) to solicit Operation Chaos republicans to vote for Hillary . They don’t represent the Democratic Party, anymore than Zell and Joe do. They represent the Clinton Party, or, should I say, the Hill-Billy Party. I’m bitter that I supported them for too long.
Anyone who doubts what the Clinton campaign has become, and the mouth breathing neanderthals who are her most deranged supporters should take a stroll over to NO QUARTER. Careful, it’s a weird composite of a freak show and a KKK clan rally.
Bring back Samantha Powers. She spoke the truth.

I’ve yet to see one acknowledgement in Obamaland that RFK’s son wasn’t even offended and is sticking up for Hillary. I guess that’s not part of consensus reality just yet.
Yes, ugh. You could sum up this whole kerfluffle as “it’s all about Obama”. Hillary speaks about RFK to defend her own presence in the race, and the Obama camp butts in with “ARE YOU THREATENING ME?!” (Just as with the Al Gore – Internet flap, they act as though Hillary released a 30 second video of assassination talk with no context.)
Methinks the Obama fans need teepee for their collective bunghole.

Politics being played…isn’t that something the MUP wasn’t going to do…go negative? LOL!
Obama made comments about voters, certainly fair game for some needling from Clinton. Clinton simply made a historical reference that Obama’s camp twisted into something that it wasn’t.
Tom in Texas
How negative. How dare he twist her words out of context.
nightjar
The question of what the hell she meant with her remarks and whether or not individual people forgive her are two separate questions. The first is open for debate and the second subjective conclusion. RFK’s analysis was pretty clear as was his choice to not judge her negatively. Others equally have the right to judge her one way or the other. She’s a candidate for the POTUS for christsakes.
Tom in Texas
such as every other Kennedy other than the one angling for Hill’s seat when she leaves?
Genine
You people are fucking crazy. Obama’s campaign did not twist anything. They did not attack her. Obama’s response has been very restrained. In fact, Obama SAID, that he believed Hillary meant NO offense and that she was just tired.
Clinton critics have said a lot about the comments, as if their right to. But the Obama campaign only said the remarks weren’t appropriate. That is something Clinton herself acknowledges, thus, we have the “apology”.
So what the HELL are you talking about? Clinton critics and Obama supporters on the internet can say whatever it is that they feel. But Ballon Juice or any other blog is NOT the Obama campaign.
If that’s the best you all can come up with- you are truly sad and pathetic.
Unless you can come up with an example of the Obama campaign “overreacting” to Clinton’s remarks (which a number of commentors have asked you to do and you haven’t) then you all are nothing but crazy POS’s.
Maggie
Well, genius, I stood up for her Friday night and yesterday. Oh, and so did Obama and Axelrod.
My complaint here was about the non-apology (cause while she didn’t mean anything untoward, it sounded like that to lots of folks) and especially her effort to blame the furor on Obama.
And I get even frothier when I compare Obama’s very gentle handling of the episode with the way Clinton went after Obama’s remarks knowing full well that he doesn’t look down on either religion or hunting (which anyone capable of independent thought could see).
She’s classless. She’s reacting badly to being on the receiving end of a media storm that is not at all unlike the one she actively fanned against Obama. Very hard to feel sorry for her under those circumstances. So oddly enough I’m not going to try.
evie
I know I have to do my best to take a break from following the campaign when my loathing for Clinton reaches the level it’s at. It makes me despair in politics at all.
The Obama people, as usual, were hugely restrained in their statement on Friday, and Axelrod himself went on Hardball and said he did not think Clinton is laying in wait for Obama to be killed. The next day, despite no apology ever being offered to him (and never will be as she made clear today), he assured reporters that he took no offense. And now they — the CLINTONS — are trying to make her deplorable comment about Obama and his team? I would list even more examples of Clinton piling on to lies and distortions about Obama (Hamas, anyone? Ayers? As far as I know?), but to do so would drive me insane.
I’m simply going to write Reid, Peloisi and Dean next week, like I did last week, and tell them they are responsible for allowing this travesty of a campaign to continue. I’ll write them weekly until June 3 and then I’ll write them daily.
ThymeZone
Me too also, as well.
I said that there was no dark meaning to the assassination reference. I think pretty much everybody got that fairly soon.
What the Clintoons don’t want to admit is that it was the grotesque nature of the gaffe, the reckless and gratuitous nature of it, the unnecessariness of it, that made her look like an ass, and called her judgment into question.
They are inventing a strawman version of their own fuckup in order to dismiss its importance. This is basically classic Rovian politics. An elbow into the mouth, and then, oops, sorry, was that your face? And then, the issue is, we weren’t aiming for the face. The “story” becomes whether they were aiming for your face. But in the meantime, your teeth are on the floor.
How stupid do the asshole Clintons think people are?
Never mind, we already know the answer to that one.
There was a time when they would have been right.
That was then, this is now.

I just asked my friend, who doesn’t much care who wins between Hillary and Obama (and didn’t vote for either in the primary) what he thought of all this, as he doesn’t follow politics like most here do, doesn’t read blogs, doesn’t watch the Sunday morning shows etc.
I knew he’d seen it originally on TV news on Friday, but we hadn’t discussed it.
The response was “hey, it was a stupid thing to say, I thought she was talking about assassination… she’s lucky Obama’s not making anything out of this ’cause all’s fair in politics.”
Of course, he’s immune from most of the spin and counter-spin as he doesn’t see it unless it makes the TV news or the occasional Daily Show ep he watches.

The Clintonistas want us to believe she was only talking about the schedule–and therefore that there were only two times in history that applies to her argument? Riiiight.

It still does not change the delegate math.

What I find fascinating about the primary is that throughout it, Obama has had to handle one ‘crisis’ after another, often with his fellow party member, who just happens to be his opponent, sticking a knife in him every chance she can. Not only sticking it in, but twisting it mercilessly to increase the damage. Add to that his having to handle anything McCain and the right threw at him, and you would have to be a total idiot not to see that Obama handled it all. The crap he has had to deal with would have taken down almost any other candidate, and probably have ruined their political career.
He has what it takes to kick McCain and the republican party to the curb once and for all. No doubt about it. Obama and his team have shown that they run a tight operation, and their ground game is one of the best in political history. He has numbers behind him that Clinton just can’t get or has lost: pledged delegates, super delegates, contributors, cash and more. You name it, Obama has it. Hillary and her supporters can bitch all they want, but it does not change the fact that Obama has run a relatively clean campaign. One for the history books.
Contrast this with the whining injured ‘victim’ that Hillary has played since it became clear that she was not going to win. Whenever Hillary bombs, she just refuses to admit it. Just flat out lies her way out of it, and the press has pretty much been letting her get away with it. While doing that, Hillary, Bill, her campaign and her supporters turn the world on its head and blames Obama, his campaign and his supporters for Hillary’s bombing.
Sexism, racism and whatever other -ism they can come up with is used to berate everyone that they all just Hillary haters, Obama included. What is really odd is that since Hillary is losing, they are expecting this avenue to be a winner for them. That this will convince the delegates that she is THE candidate for the nomination.
After seeing the non-stop train wreck that Hillary, her husband and her campaign have been, the delegates have to ask themselves this question ‘If the polls show that Hillary is losing to McCain coming in to November, who is she going to blame?‘. Because that is what is going to happen. She will be looking for someone to take the blame for her failure, just like she has throughout her Senate career and this campaign.
Hillary is incapable of admitting fault. It just isn’t in her. Obama has shown that he can do this, and do it gracefully. Watching Obama and his campaign has been like watching a professional ice skate their way to the gold medal. Watching the Clinton campaign has been like watching Tonya Harding at her worst. Hillary is at the boxing stage of her meltdown now.
It is not even a close contest. Obama has what it takes to win this fall, and Clinton does not. Obama has been, and is, a winner. Clinton is the perpetual victim.
It is fascinating that her more rabid supporters are too blind to see this. They are not voting for Hillary because she is the best for America and the party. They are voting for her because she is Hillary, and Bill is her husband.
That is a cult constituency. You will not convert these people, they are beyond reason. We will have to endure their ranting and raving about Obama and his supporters being ‘the problem‘, but that is what we get for backing a winner. If the super delegates are stupid enough to give this to Hillary, then they deserve the disaster they will unleash.
It is good for Obama and the rest of us that there are more super delegates who can see that Obama is a winner. Even some of her super delegates, some of them being former super delegates of hers, agree. Gee, I wonder why?
This. Is. Over. Hillary needs an intervention now. She has gone off the deep end, and she may end up losing her political career over it. Expect a stream of delegates away from her soon after the primary ends.
You can bet on it.

Poking fun at the idiots at Hillaryis44:
This is from a “Hillary or McCain” voter. This is the “I wonder what will happen if I put the end of the barrel of this loaded pistol in my mouth and pull the trigger?” kind of stupid that exists there.
God has nothing to do with it, but the fact that your family tree has no branches might have something to do with it.

Now a sample of insanity from the admittedly OCD suffering Paul F. Villarreal after explaining how he is not ‘that‘ Paul Villarreal, who supports Ron Paul like his brother John D. Villarreal does:

Hooray! Hillary passed the new metric! She now needs MORE than five of the remaining delegates to every one Obama gets to win the nomination! In four days time (since May 21st), she has ‘improved’ her standing from needing three to every one for Obama to now needing more than five to every one.
You go Hillary! Keep it up!

He claims that wasn’t him.
Thing is, that was the only person by the name of “Paul Villarreal” (and I double-checked it on Open Secrets) who had donated to Clinton at all. So either he’s lying about that being him, he’s lying about his real name, or he’s lying about having donated to Clinton at all.
He’s become quite obsessed with me lately.

At this point, if the super delegates actually did pull an eleventh hour switch and give the nomination to Hillary, there’s no way on God’s green earth she wins the general election. African American voters would stay home in droves. And so would I. And so, I’m betting, would many of you. And the Democrats can’t win without those votes.

No, but there’s a real risk I’m going to have to help keep the rabid right from adding hate speech to the CA state constitution. I can’t sit that one out.

Let’s see. The latest Gallup has Hillary over McCain nationally by five points—McCain over Obama by two points [and that’s not counting the ‘Bradley Effect” which has voters say they’re for Obama even if they’re not. So let’s say McCain over Obama by five points.
Thank God for Repubs that the Dems have an inept fool, Dr. Dean the Scream Machine, in charge of the DNC. So far that moron has completely eliminated MI & FL [instead of halving their delegates as the Repubs did]. Does that stupid cretin think MI & FL will go Dem if Obama is the nominee? Dean is manna in the wilderness for the Repubs…..!
Hillary gets Reagan Dems, women, union members who hunt & go to church, independents….
Obama gets Hollyweirdos, academicides, MSM hacks & sluts, who did I leave out? Oh yeah, young people who don’t vote & blacks who may turn out….
I don’t think Hill’s people will vote for The Anointed Messiah even if she’s Number Two…

Not this (now former) independent, my wife or daughter. And we are all in her demographic. I am glad that you live by polls, I prefer facts. Hillary is losing by every single metric there is, but keep the faith baby!
In the next two weeks, or less, you can expect to see enough of a migration of delegates to Obama that it will make Hillary a footnote in this race. It is all but over, and after Obama gets the lead he can seat MI & FL as is, and it won’t do Hillary one bit of good. Since he will control the Convention (majority delegate holder), Hillary will be left out in the cold.
As she deserves to be. If I were Hillary, I would start worrying about her future, if she even has one left, in NY. She has some very upset people who want to have a little talk with her. ;)

Yup.
Still just a GOP hack from Boca Raton. Still waking up in a cold sweat because Ron Klein (D) is your rep? You can always comfort yourself with your Clay Shaw doll, little fella.
I don’t know what will comfort you when Obama is president. You’ll have to start hitting the bottle.

The new wingnut political domain for the foreseeable future. Don’t forget to pack plenty of socks and clean underwear and don’t eat the purple berries.
