Conservative figures and media, including Fox News, Alex Jones, and Donald Trump, have inspired harassment of journalists, violence in the streets, and now bombs being sent to former presidents and political opponents.
This isn't alarmist. It's reality. 1/

When Trump and his allies talk about "civility" from their opponents they don't mean being respectful or polite, neither of which is a value the president can claim to hold. They mean bending the knee or staying silent.

I don’t mean to harp on this subject but we on the Progressive side need to plan for how we deal with our ‘patriotic opposition’ when some of them start using their 2nd Amendment Solutions Kit. Remember all the butt-hurt from them when Trump won that they wouldn’t be able to use their 2nd Amendment Solutions Kit on traitorist Dems & Hillary supporters? That actually happened and far too widely for my tastes. When someone tells you something about themselves, you should believe it until proven otherwise. This is going to happen. They have supported shady characters for at least nearly a century. Starting with Josep Stalin and Adolph Hitler back in the 1920s and ’30s. So it isn’t a recent trend, but a long established pattern of supporting fascist authoritarian dictators, like our current Orange Drumpf.
I’ve provided links to various archived stories in the past, too much like work to keep that up, but it’s easy to find if you doubt me. Stories that support the actions of the Soviet in Ukraine to create a famine that changed the composition of the population to mainly of Russian heritage by killing off the Ukranian people by shipping all the harvest out of Ukraine, with troops.
Oops, the stories didn’t mention shipping the food away, my bad. Just what a good strong job Mr. Stalin was doing managing Ukraine’s problems.
Stories about how “firm leadership” of Mr. Hitler was bound to improve the daily lives of the Germans. Except for the dead people, I guess. That wasn’t in the story about the new German leader, either.

The Right has so successfully moved the Overton window of discussion in this country I fear we’ll never get back to a reasonable middle ground. Basic decency, good governance, and the Social Compact are labelled as weakness, soshulizm, handouts and identity politics as they’re laundered through our media apparatus, prepped to be dismissed and derided by half our population upon consumption.
We’re legitimately at a point where things like “Honesty is valued” and “Citizens should have broad access to voting in elections” and “Subject matter knowledge is a good thing” and “Encouraging political violence is bad” need to be re-litigated or something. Those are now controversial statements, apparently.

At the newspaper where I worked, the desk editors on duty have a daily “budget meeting” where they discuss what stories they’re using tomorrow and what else they’re working on. It keeps things coordinated and among other things helps avoid duplication of coverage by multiple desks. I cannot believe that editorial desks at The NYT work in silos isolated from each other, as that statement implies. You just do not run a news organisation that way.

@Amir Khalid: Doesn’t pass the smell test with me either, Amir. Thinking on cancelling the Grey Lady after the midterms. On the one hand, it’s good to monitor them. On the other: I don’t want to fund the Sulzbergers’ vendetta against the Clintons and other non-Republicans. All these terrible hires and stories did not happen by themselves. It is a body of work.
And a piece of work, too.

And of course, we must never forget that shouting at a treasonous monster eating dinner out is exactly equal to setting an explosive in a non-political person’s mailbox.
I mean, really, who wouldn’t think that shouting at someone guilty of political horror on behalf of Russia is the same as blowing someone up who’s job is to go get the mail each day after the mailman runs through the neighborhood.
Can’t we get an indictment for inciting to riot on someone here? Like The Donald?
Or, wait, is calling a group of racist fascist thugs deplorable, that’s the same thing as inciting violence? Oh, sure it is!! What’s wrong with me for not seeing that up front???

@Uncle Cosmo: Winner!

How this plays out will be as follows:
Basic condemnation from the right wing mouthpieces
Breathless speculation on who it is
Sudden turn of events pointing to a left winger who is trying to influence the upcoming elections
Media glom on and follow the muddy waters down the BS while the right-wing machine normailzes it all
Feel sorry for you all. Such hatred is scary

Wait a minute, a suspicious package was sent to Cuomo too?
ruckus
@Amir Khalid:
Seems pretty obvious that most of the MSM is run from one editors desk. Their stories follow the same theme way too closely.

Step 2: “Nobody got hurt, so what’s the big deal?”
Mandalay
@Cheryl Rofer:
That is as big and blatant a lie as I have ever seen in any article. From the video, this was the actual discussion:
Joy Behar: “Every time he [Trump] says thing like “The press is the enemy of the people” his entire party needs to stand up against him, and say something. Mitch McConnell – where is he? He’s the leader of his party.”
Meghan McCain: “He’s getting harassed and heckled when he goes out in public to have dinner with his wife…”
Nobody on the panel pushed back against what McCain said, and McCain made no mention of bombs.
To be clear I have no time for Meghan McCain, or the “both sides” tight rope she constantly walks. But the story pushed by RawStory is a vile lie. It’s also worth reading the comments for that article. Hundreds of people were dumping on McCain for something she never said, or even remotely implied.
Here’s the actual video that RawStory lied about. The relevant conversation starts around 6:30.
And to the author of that smear article, Travis Gettys: Fuck you. You are lying scum.
Cheryl Rofer
@Mandalay: Thanks! I try not to retweet incorrect stuff, but I get caught every once in a while. I’ll admit I hesitated when I saw “RawStory.” Will scratch them from future retweets.

As to the count so far, I haven’t seen Cuomo, did see Maxine Waters got a package bomb. I’ve been on and off line, will be more off line during the afternoon.
Let’s all wait for a bit to evaluate the count. But this is a significant attack.
WaterGirl
@lamh36: So much for them having said they were keeping the return address secret. All the packages had the same return address.

@condorcet runner-up:
You are right, and I wish Schumer would drop his “both sides” approach immediately, and forever.
Instead, he should dump on Trump whenever he uses incendiary rhetoric, and point out that his fellow Republicans in Congress are scared to speak out against him.

@lamh36:
The comments under that twit with the photo are amazing. All proven now that this package was assembled, addressed, handled all by a Democratic operative, to distract from the other distraction underway at the southern border of Mexico.
Amazing. I so seldom dip into the pool of toxicity surrounding the Russo-Republican party and its drones. The degree of stupid and evil evident from every Russian supporter was astounding.

@Cheryl Rofer: Raw Story fucks things up a lot. They once published an article discussing impeachment and: a) failed to note that it takes 67 senators to remove a federal officeholder; and b) incorrectly stated that three presidents have been impeached, including Nixon (who surely would have been had he not resigned first, but nevertheless, facts matter).
condor
@Mandalay: Thanks for understanding. You would think it is such an easy lay-up to call this sort of thing out without fearing (or maybe even better, caring) about the inevitable criticism from the usual peanut gallery on the right, as well as the pointless “centrists” in the beltway media. I am encouraged by Pelosi using the words “corruption” and “lying” in her latest statements, and it appears that the newer crop of Democratic candidates (Beto, Gillum, etc.) are not afraid to point out when and explicitly describe how their opponents are lying, or are speaking on behalf of their donors instead of their ostensible constituents.

@SiubhanDuinne:
There is no way that a “lone wolf” could send out this many bombs in this short of a time.
This is a coordinated attack by a group of people. I guarantee you.

@lamh36:
You can put any return address on a label that you want to. I’ve mailed packages from San Francisco to LA with my home address as my return address and my work address as the main address so it will show up at one of the two places even if delivery gets messed up.
At best, that might be a clue that that package was mailed from Florida.
WaterGirl
@lamh36: I don’t see a postmark on that envelope. Is it just my old eyes? Was it hand-delivered?
Shalimar
@Cheryl Rofer: Cuomo’s turned out to be a threatening letter, not anything that looked like a bomb. So he basically said “me too, hey, over here, give me some attention.”
