Here’s tonight’s college football lineup:
I got no rooting interest, except I hope the Illini suppress the Muzzle Flashes of Kent State for the sake of faithful commenter (and Dawg!) Raven. That’s all I got. You?

I love football but I can’t get college football. Don’t understand the rooting interests, unless you went to the school.

For the non-football folk, its W.C.Fields night on TCM. 8pm-The Bank Dick
Steeplejack
One last (non-football) reminder: The Bank Dick is on TCM at 8:00 p.m. EDT, followed by It’s a Gift at 9:30 and You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man at 11:00. Good W.C. Fields stuff.
@shell:
What you said. I posted without reading.

Full slate of MLB games, plus some college soccer and volleyball on espn3. Busy night for the iPad.

And as I’m sure you’re all dying to know, I killed my Fantasy draft. I can’t believe how well it went. An 18 team league and I managed to draft Antonio Brown, Matt Forte, Emanuel Sanders, CJ Spiller and Matt Ryan (iffy about him) in the first 5 rounds. I’m gonna win it.
Yatsuno
Ahem.
GO BRONCS!!!
That is all.

Do they make a non-incadescent lightbulb that doesn’t emit a faint, high-pitched tone like the old TV test patterns? I may go insane here…
If not, as Palin is my witness, I may have to go back to incandescent.
Poopyman
Dear Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen,
It’s unfortunate that one of you has to lose the Democratic primary for MD’s Senate seat held by the retiring Babs Mikulski, but whichever one of you doesn’t make it, please primary Ben Cardin’s ass.
Poopyman
@Germy Shoemangler: What you need, my friend, is to grow old and deaf like the rest of us. I don’t hear anything from my LEDs. Couldn’t tell from the tinnitus anyhow.
Germy Shoemangler
@Poopyman: Believe me, I’m deaf as a post at most frequencies, but that particular frequency comes in loud and clear.
My last exam (and it WILL be my last exam) from an ear doc, he smirked at me and said “You have profound hearing loss.” I don’t know why he found it so amusing.
I wanted to punch him.
EDIT: I think LEDs are the way to go.
redshirt
@Germy Shoemangler: LEDS are the future of all lighting.
Germy Shoemangler
@redshirt: Is there a good brand of LED bulbs? I remember buying fluorescent bulbs (7-year life!) and having them die after one year.
Hkedi
@Germy Shoemangler:
Cree bulbs are pretty good. they were one of the first companies to sell a lot of them commercially.
LED bulbs cost more, but they last so long you think of them more like a sink or an oven, it’s very strange when they actually fail. install and forget about them.
Central Planning
@Germy Shoemangler:
I’m not sure about better brands than others, however you need to read the fine print on the LED bulb packaging. In the small print they will usually say they are not meant for enclosed spaces. This means things like the fixture in my kitchen which is a nice little oven for the LED bulbs.
That being said, I just (within the past two weeks) purchased some Feit LED bulbs to replace the mix of bulbs in my two bathrooms. Since they are exposed I think they will last a long time.
OT: Who hosts balloon-juice.com? I have a small non-profit that wants to move their FYWP site to another provider.
Roger Moore
@Germy Shoemangler:
My advice is to pay for quality. If you buy the cheapest CFLs at your local supermarket or hardware store, you’ll probably get ones that produce annoying flicker and/or noises. If you find some really nice ones, especially ones that list a CRI of 90+, they will generally have quality electronics that won’t produce annoying sounds or flickering. You should also look at good quality LEDs; the ones from Cree are very nice.
benw
@redshirt:
Well, yeah. And even then, it has to be your undergrad school. I did my doctorate work at UCLA and never managed to get into the sports, even though my undergrad university had no sports to speak of.
raven
What’s to understand? If you like it you do and if you don’t you don’t. Who gives a fuck?
Roger Moore
@Central Planning:
This. There are some very expensive LEDs that are designed for completely enclosed fixtures, but it may be cost competitive to replace the whole fixture with one of the newer ones that has the LEDs built in. It seems weird not to be able to replace the lamp separately from the fixture, but with LEDs the lifetime is so long, and the advantages of building a fixture to take advantage of the new technology are big enough, it actually makes sense.

I have to agree with him.

@Steeplejack: I want my TCM.
Trying to tie both ends of this thread together: Will that scene in The Bank Dick with all the lightbulbs–will it work with LCDs?
Germy Shoemangler
@ThresherK: His nose lights up, but only if it’s unenclosed.
SiubhanDuinne
@Poopyman:
I just want to thank you for spelling it properly (“tinnitus”). I’m more tired than you can imagine of people spelling it “tinnitis,” as though it were an inflammation.
Germy Shoemangler
@SiubhanDuinne: It’s a tinny word.
How do you feel about the pronunciation? Tin-NIE-Tus or TIN-it-tuss?

@Hkedi:
Agree, Cree and Phillips seem to be the leading brands. Am able to get subsidized LED lamps (courtesy of our electric purveyor) really cheap, and they’re usually Feit. Decent, some are dimmable, some not and the color temperature can vary.
Am perhaps 60% LED, 25% fluorescent and the rest are oddball halogen with no replacement potential (yet). LED supply has exploded the last couple years and prices are so very cheap now, compared to the initial $25-30 each.
SiubhanDuinne
@Germy Shoemangler:
I prefer TIN-it-tus, although I gather both pronunciations are acceptable. (I’m in a semi-public space right now, so shall watch the Monty Python clip a bit later.)

Great, it’s not bad enough that the Illini are awful, fired their coach a week before the season started and now have a damn weather delay making it even later!

Color changing LEDs will reinvent lighting. Programmable lightshows encompassing every color possible.
raven
@SiubhanDuinne: The VA denied my TIN-it-tus, claim but gave me a hearing aid anyway!
Germy Shoemangler
@raven: Does a hearing aid help with tinnitus?
It would seem anyone who was in the service and exposed to loud guns, etc., should be eligible.
smintheus
The USMNT has looked unusually bad against Peru. Then they’re given a somewhat ridiculous penalty, and more or less true to form for tonight, Altidore takes a weak kick that the Peruvian keeper blocks easily. Unfortunately for Peru, it rebounds right to Altidore who pots it and puts the US back in the game, somehow.
raven
@Germy Shoemangler: I went through a bunch of tests and they determined my hearing was bad enough in one ear to qualify. If you were “in country: you are eligible for hearing aids and glasses based on need, not a profile. They do, however, make you file a claim and TIN-it-tus, is pretty much undiagnosable so it is supposed to be a easier to get a disability rating. I got the aids and glasses and aid but denied the claim even though I was in the Arty in Korea and served in country in the Nam. Meanwhile the $2500+ iPhone compatible hearing aids don’t do much for me. They say they can help with Tinittus.
ThresherK
@smintheus: That was a good bit of pressure, and with it the goal.
Roger Moore
@redshirt:
Ugh. Color changing LEDs are a neat gadget, but they have real problems as a practical light source. Color LEDs put out incredibly pure single colors, and you can mix that to produce an approximation of other colors, but it’s a bad approximation. For general lighting use, you really need the white LEDs that produce an actual broad spectrum.
Mike E
In re: tinnitus, some days the whine is less annoying, I’d like to figure out what causes the difference.
smintheus
@ThresherK: Yeah, the US is now starting to look alive, and Peru which had been totally outclassing the US, were caught running around haplessly. Up until that 2nd Altidore goal, this looked a bit like a high school squad battling ineffectually against pros.

We lost to South Carolina last night. Very tough to lose the first game. When does basketball season start?
A Ghost To Most
@Germy Shoemangler:
I’ve been using Phillips Slimline LEDs, and they don’t seem to hum, unless I try to dim them.They have the added benefit of being tough enough to get knocked around, which is useful at times.

The Gophers did better against the #2 team in the country last night than I thought hey were going to. They were never really a threat to win the game, despite the final score, but they kept it close. Last year, they held TCU to the lowest offensive output they had all year. It will be interesting to see if that’s true again this year.
raven
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Be interesting to see how many seizures Kill has.

Four Kent State students were murdered by Ohio National Guard troops in a tragic shooting 45 years ago this last last May. Nine others were injured.
I am not a fan of Betty referring to the Kent State team as the Muzzle Flashes.

@raven: My guess is none. After the one he had in 2013, he finally changed his lifestyle. Among other things, he lost a lot of weight. He hasn’t had a seizure since.

Back way late to tie a couple of things up:
I’ve had the best luck with Cree LEDs. I replaced 65W R30s with them.
TINN itus. Mine was caused by a neck injury around the C3-C4 disk. Volume and overtones depend on how I’ve stressed that joint during the day.

Color changing LEDS have already changed the world. The Vegas strip is now LED. So many newscasts and sportshows use LEDs for set lighting. LED christmas lights are more and more common. There is nowhere LEDs won’t eventually dominate.

Why? Are you looking forward to finishing fifth in the ACC?
Steeplejack
@ThresherK:
Heh. Actually, I think back during the phase when Turner was colorizing all the old movies he bought they actually CGI’ed that scene with modern light bulbs. Didn’t play as well, so they left it out. Go figure.
