Perhaps y’all can bring your degrees and honors and compare them to Ted Cruz.

I’d love to be there. I’ve got to be home by about debate time, but Woodley is on the way home.

If you like Belgian Beer, mussels and fries, there’s a place a little ways up Connecticut from the National Zoo called St. Arnolds that specializes in those things.

Ah, my old home.
I recall liking and going to Open City diner and Mediterra a lot, and a couple of Italian and Indian places across the street that were also good (you know what you’re getting). Of course, the biggest share of my business went to the McDonalds.
That’s just for the bloc at the Woodley Park metro. If you cross the bridge into Adams Morgan, there’s more options.
(Of course, I don’t know if any of these places are still open after three years).
raven
@srv: And your birth certificate to compare with that greasy
motherfucker.

Another option in the same block is to order pizza from Vace (whatever wait time they give you add 10 minutes, and expect service to be slightly slow anyway, but the pizza is delicious) – there’s a pool hall down the street (Atomic Billiards) that lets you bring food in. I can’t remember what their tap list is like, but Vace is inexpensive for how good it is, so that would probably be a fairly affordable option.

I was thinking of possible places. One is Front Page, which is a bar/restaurant just across the street from the 19th Street exit of the Dupont Circle metro. Two more restaurant-y possibilities are Lauriel Plaza on 18th Street (near S or T Streets, I think) which has good Mexican food and La Tomate on Connecticut Ave (near R Street) which is sorta-Italian and popular with the locals. There are also some bars further up Connecticut Ave. near the Cleveland Park metro station, including (I think) an Irish-y place (Nanny O’Brian’s?). Haven’t been there for a decade, at least, so it may not be there any more.

The places I mentioned are a block or two south of the Cleveland Park metro station but still an easy walk from Woodley.

@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?:
That sounds like fun.

@raven:
The outright racist terms laughed up at this blog is really despicable.
Hopefully John Cole will put a stop to it.
raven
@srv: fuck you scumbag
srv
@raven: You’re the one calling a Hispanic candidate a greaser.
You need to grow up, little man.
mai naem mobile
Wouldn’t the actual zoo be more appropriate for watching a.GOP.debate? Just sayin’
JPL
Word of advice, don’t follow Wonkette’s guidelines on drinking during the debate.
raven
@srv: He’s a greasy, lowlife, fascist, bible thumping punk. You’re so fucking stupid you can’t tell the difference between someone being called greasy and someone being called a Greaser. Fucking idiot.
Omnes Omnibus
That damned song is stuck in my head now. Curse you, DougJ!
boatboy_srq
@mai naem mobile: That’s insulting to the animals. Now if it were at Ft. Totten Transfer Station,…
RE: meetup: I too have to be home somewhat early, but I’m game for the first shift.
MattF
@boatboy_srq: Yeah, I’m quite certain that the zoo animals have higher standards than homo sapiens republicanus.

Lots of good places to go. The question will be whether you can hear the debate. This place down by Union Station is getting in on the action:

Or, watch with the other side, and walking distance from the zoo:

Or with the good guys, down by the Convention Center:

@srv: Cole should put a stop to the racist comments by blocking you, Knowbody and Right to Rise. Good suggestion.
Hope y’all have a great time at the D.C. meetup and we get to see the photographic evidence soon.
Joel
I used to think srv was a DougJ troll, but he’s not nearly funny enough.
Steeplejack
No can do. Company in from out of town, and my schedule is jammed up.
Kay (not the front-pager)
Going to Book of Mormon @ the Kennedy Center that night, otherwise I would love to join the meet-up.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@DougJ: Vace isn’t any particular known style (Neopolitan, NY, New Haven, Chicago), but it is tasty and thin crust – best carry-out pizza in DC for sure. They use canned mushrooms for reasons I can’t fathom (the rest of their veggies are fresh) but you can get real brine cured kalamata olives as a topping, rather than the tasteless canned black ones, which IMO more than makes up for it. Their meatballs are all beef in case anyone keeps kosher (I’m not Jewish but I have friends who are).
Elizabelle
@Steeplejack: I think you prefer to remain a man of mystery. Is my guess.
I’m in for the meetup, if less enthusiastic about watching Trump and GOP vs. reality.
But alcohol could help.

I’ll be there. When? Where?
Redshift
I should be able to make it, but I don’t have any ideas for where.
satby
@Omnes Omnibus: belated Happy Birthday, Omnes!
mike in dc
I’m interested, but where and when on Thursday?
Omnes Omnibus
@satby: Thank you.

If I wasn’t in Ireland I’d say Loriol Plaza. Good quality and inexpensive Mexican. Good atmosphere too
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@MattF: Nanny O’Brians is a dump of an Irish pub – very divey with a decent juke box though. The food is not so good – for drinks it would be fun but if people want to eat I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. Atomic Billiards (one of my recs) is also pretty divey (it’s on the basement level so it could be 95 and sunny or 23 and snowing and you couldn’t tell the difference from in there) but you can bring in food from outside. It’s weird that Cleveland Park still has some of the diviest places in Northwest DC given that it’s become possibly the toniest neighborhood in the city.
DougJ
I’ll send something out on where and when once I figure it out. Hopefully I’ll figure it out soon.
Zinsky
I wish I could join you all! I will be in Philly on business that day.
eemom
Really wish I could come, especially as I missed the last few meetups, but we’re leaving for a much anticipated beach vacation on Friday, and I’m determined to leave on time for once.
Have fun….hope to make it next time.

The guy at the Cleveland Park Bar and Grille has e-mailed me to say that it will have the debates on TV on their deck.

Opens at 5.

I wasn’t going to watch the debates, but watching with a BJ group might be fun. I’m done with Math Fest activities at 6 pm, so am up for joining the group at some point. I don’t know the area, so can’t suggest any particular place. However, there is a Front Page here in Arlington and it’s not very good (okay beer selection, not so good food), assuming the one in Woodley is the same chain, I would say no to that. I don’t eat pizza unless there is no cheese on it (or vegan cheese).
Looking forward to meeting some of ya’ll!
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@John Dillinger: Their food is decent and the rooftop deck there is really nice if the weather is good. The tap list was kind of meh last time I was there but I’m a bit of a beer snob.
Shakezula
The only place I know of in CP is St. Arnold’s which I think is above Atomic Billiards. At any rate, I went to the toilet and there was another restaurant underneath it. If you’re looking at Dupont Circle there’s the Bier Baron, which is divey, full of beers, but I don’t recall TVs.
I favor Dupont only because I was going to go see Jacob Lawrence’s Struggle before it ends and the Phillips is open late on Thursdays.
SmallAxe
I should be able to make it depending on where we choose. For what it’s worth Atomic Billiards is cool but it is really dark and in a basement better late night place than early one I think. Cleveland Park B&G is definitely nicer spacious and more accessible I think.
mak
Will R2R be there, DougJ?
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Shakezula: The basement below St. Arnolds is not Atomic – Atomic is in a basement in the same block though – just a door or two down.
